Really appreciate the work you do for this game’s lore. People don’t give the storytellers of DBD enough credit (the hag’s lore is till terrible though)
"Wraith hasn't really fill out a similar pop-culture idea" While wraith is a pretty clear predator-inspired killer with his ability to become invisible, his ability to see blood more clearly through his perks, he even has a perk called "predator" and the skull weapon is a trophey for predators. So yeah, no, He is definetely inspired by Predator, but because he isn't alien like people just can't see these pretty clear references in his design
Oh interesting, I never actually put that together. I always saw him as more of a Grim Reaper type, with the whole "only seen when you are about to die" and his Wailing Bell being a set of references to Banshees and the Bell Tolling.
I feel like such an idiot for never realizing this. I guess it’s because nobody really sees the original predator as a horror movie, more an action thriller.
I personally think the wraith is best represented not by a killer type, but by a common power so many famous slashers have: the ability to appear and disappear at a whim. There is no chase with the wraith until he's already close enough to strike. You can think he's following you, but he'll inexplicably appear right where you think you can escape
I love the fact that one of the best Tome stories (Philip's) came out in the same Tome as one of the worst (Hag's). BHVR writing at its finest. I wonder if in-game, Wraith thinks he's hunting the men who killed for money or if he's fully aware that he's now killing completely innocent people, turning him into a never-ending spring of survivor's guilt.
Given that the Entity has pulled that trick before, making the Deathslinger see the survivors as people who wronged him, and given that the Wraith has the same sort of glowing white eyes Philip thinking that he's hunting down the men who killed for money is entirely possible. He hates them, hates that he inadvertently became one of them, and snapped and killed Azarov for turning him into one of them, so it would fit pretty well. But oh man does the idea that Philip knows he's hunting innocent survivors and just doesn't see another option, that he's just given up despite the guilt it causes, have fascinating story possibilities. Plus his guilt over it would further feed the Entity.
@@tympestbooks1727 It would also work because of his model, he ALWAYS looks sorrowful, mourning even. It's like he's well aware of the suffering he's causing, and is only doing it because there's no alternative, or because all the other alternatives are far worse to him.
IMO the reason why Wraith is the most popular is because *I don't think he's really a stealth killer, he's an fundamentals Killer, like Dead By Daylight's equivalent of Ryu.* What does he do? He can move around the map a little faster, use this capability to sneak up on Survivors with no terror radius or close distance in chase, whack 'em. He almost _solely_ tests your skills as an M1 Killer, but enhances the skill expression of that M1 playstyle in just enough ways to not feel mindless. I think it's an extremely underrated and effective design. It also helps that he's also one of the _only_ killers with a counter to the "hold W" strategy built into his kit, which I think is refreshing and perhaps needed in the modern age of anti looping Killers.
Did you guys gloss over the fact that Paul had to ring the bell to warn the village of attackers? Maybe I missed it but its a really tragic parallel to how he uses it now :(
he still rings the bell to warn of danger… only now the danger is himself. makes me wonder if the bell was his own addition to provide mercy to the survivors, since he seems to be able to at least partially uncloak without it.
That intro alone is enough to give this video a like. It's well voiced acted and brings shivers plus the information on the Nigerian War adds a new perspective of history that I wasn't aware of
I still remember, just over 4 years ago when I barely started playing that I was praying this game would get much more lore. The small pieces we had were so interesting and I just wanted to learn more. I'm loving the fact we can actually have a lore channel dedicated to this game.
Yea, but the story writing makes it sound like the characters are totally used to seeing flocks of crows and have no questions. That be like me, who lives in the upper portion of the Northern hemisphere, looking out, seeing a flock of parrots and just being like, "Yup, totally normal day with nothing to question here."
@@AliCatDarling I never got the feeling that anyone thought this was completely normal when I read the lore. Granted the lore only really shows Camilla's perspective (which is fine, it is her lore after all), so it really can't be said how other people view the crows. However, on that note, the lore does say wherever she performed, a flock of crows followed, which I would assume people would have taken note of. I mean if you saw someone who was being followed by pigeons, even if you see pigeons every day, you'd take note of that. So it is possible that people did take note of the crows and thought they were odd (or maybe they assumed the crows were her pets or something). And since the story focuses on Camilla, and she views the crows as not only normal, but her protectors, the story doesn't point out how odd it is. It's also possible that BHVR was more focused on showing that The Entity had chosen Camilla to be a part of its realm years before it would take her (a theme shared with Jonah and the numbers) that they either didn't bother to research and/or didn't care if crows were common in the area at all and just focused on keeping the theme.
Something I realized about Phillip’s lore is that he probably doesn’t come from an exact copy of our timeline so some details such as what his grandmother said can then make more sense. Perhaps in his world or timeline the Igbo people were north of the Hausa-Fulani people.
no it still makes total sense for this to be a real world timeline and for philip to be igbo! what he failed to mention was the 1966 anti igbo progrom. which was a series of massacres against the igbo (and other tribes) who lived in the *north*, not the south. there were still a minority of igbo people in northern nigeria, and they were specifically hunted and slaughtered, which perfectly lines up with philips story
no, I think philip is still igbo, there's still a rational explination for him being a northener. it makes more sense too, considering the genocide let me draw attention to the 1966 anti-igbo progrom. in short, it was a series of massacres against the igbo (and other southern in origin tribes) who lived in the *north*. it was a big part of what led to the biafra/nigerian war. there were still igbo people in the north, and its very clear that they were massacred. this fits in very well with philips lore!
My understanding is there was an Igbo minority in the North... and the anti-Igbo pogrom took place in the north and not the south. Being born Igbo and in the North feels completely right from what I've read about the massacres. In fact, had they been from the South... and Igbo... it would have been more a of a war atrocity and less massacre like the story. What's awesome is it isnt stated... and there's a lot of room for interpretation. But Igbo minority in the North makes complete sense.
yea that's what I was saying! philip being igbo still makes total sense because of the 1966 anti igbo progrom. his people (along with other southern tribes in the northern hausa fulani area) were targeted and massacred Because we had an igbo person in the north
the thing about philip’s family living in the north does have historical accuracy: in 1966, just before the official start of the nigerian civil war, there was a series of anti-igbo pogroms carried out in northern nigeria against igbo people who lived in the north, hence philip’s family’s location & why they were victimized.
Point 3 is a mistake I think. He didnt know his boss was killing people only that he was doing shady shit. It wasnt until he found out it was killing people that he went hog wild even more so because he was being tricked into doing it.
Philip my beloved...! He was my favorite visual design back when I first got into the game, when the Nurse just released. I actually really loved his original lore given how it humanized him, made him unwilling and sympathetic you know? I dropped out of the community for a good couple years, but now I'm back my lorefrog heart is warm to know he's getting love. I haven't read any of the new tomes or anything yet but I'm really excited to come back and watch the entirety of this video once I do so it won't be spoiled
It is, but it isn't stated in story and BHVR has had some writing missteps along similar lines in the past. So it's probably intended for the audience to understand that the crows are from the Entity, but also the fact that in story Carmina's just like "yes, crows out of nowhere, this is clearly a good sign and I will live through my loss" feels off in the context of there not being crows in Chile.
THANK YOU. I have always been wondering what the heck Wraith's bell is called. I kinda want to get one. Not for cosplay purposes, I just really like how it sounds. Edit: I looked up Ogene music. HIGHLY recommend. The players deliver a lotta spunk with just two hollow bells, it's actually funky in a way.
Honestly that line about him being a Northern sounds more like a geographical misunderstanding, a big one, but still more like a mistake vs intentional
luckily I had already researched a little bit on the Nigerian civil war (not nearly as in-depth as this video though) because I was curious on how the political band Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra got his stage name. he directly chose it because of the juxtaposition of the American abundant snack brand, Jello, and the country where 2 million people starved to death, Biafra. idk it's interesting
I know this is kinda far fetched but I think Wraith might be based off Erik (aka the phantom) from Phantom of the Opera. Appearance wise Wraith wears a cloak like garment and his burns are somewhat hidden, he uses a musical instrument to make himself known to everyone around him. Somewhat story wise too, both characters have been treated in a extremely cruel manner over something they cannot control so in response they become cruel to people who pushed hatred upon them. They both also want to be loved, kept safe, and have their family. Plus they both lose the innocence of their childhood over what has happened to them and they also bring death where ever they go no matter what they do. I know this somewhat makes no sense but then again why would they choose Wraith to have a Phantom of the Opera skin when they have other disfigured characters to use instead
Just wanted to point out that if philip was born Hausa-Fulani, but grew up in the south after his family moved there, wouldn't that make him Igbo anyway? That would also put him at the forefront of the war too.
To remedy the inconsistency of philip being a northerner- the genocide he is going through in his tome could be the 1966 anti-Igbo pogrom instead of the nigerian civil war; The anti-igbo pogrom specifically targeted people of southern origin who physically lived in the north. Doesn't fix bhvrs shit writing but its somewhat more consistent ig?
I would love for a chance to do an intro as Solomon Troupe did; it's beautiful how easy the fans make the lore more entertaining than just reading the book with no life to the voice that reads it. I'd imagine doing that would be impossible, but I can still dream! But for real, I love the video and keep it up!
One idea I like but doesn't have any mention in the lore is what happened to him in his teenage years? Without family members, and without potential adoption candidates available, where did he live to adulthood? How did he get the money to travel to America? I posit that he was one of the many, many child refugees that fled the country during and after the civil war. Maybe he entered America at a much younger age than what is implied in the lore. And probably, he got introduced to the nightmare that is the american foster care system.
Excellent video! WRT Philip being a 'Northerner' but also clearly coded as Igbo: My little headcanon is that this story was part of the 1966 anti-Igbo pogroms, which were carried out against Igbos living in northern Nigeria. Thus, when Abi says they're being targeted for being Northern, it's her shorthand of saying they're being targeted for being Igbos in the north.
Ah yes, do feel free to join the discord! We have shitposts galore, mods that are bullied by your local residents and people who’s mentality you’ll often find yourself questioning as your’s slowly drifts away! *Fr tho, amazing video with a substantial attention to detail. And also props to Solomon for being a lovely guest and having an strangely nice voice. I’m sure we’ll have fun talking about Carmina, yknow, considering some of the things mentioned on discord lol. Keep it up, Will. You’ve come oh so far and you’re doing great!*
It's very simple to rationalize the lore with him being Igbo and a Northerner. It's a big multiverse afterall. The same regional mass stavation/civil war/invasion/clusterfuck/imperial pissing match occurred. The ethnic groups were just in different locations in his timeline.
Food for thought: Much like the Chris and Claire Redfield skins, would it be weird for there to be skins of killers returning to being human as "victims/regrets of the Entity", like Trapper, Wraith, etc? In addition, would it be weird to create skins that symbolize their full separation from humanity to the Entity, causing the ripple to happen in the progress? Maybe the Entity does it themselves so that the killer side may kill the more human side of them to becoming full devotees to the Entity?
Looking at the Blight's and Void's (place) lore, I think there might be a little wiggle room for it. The Void is where those who got the Bad Soul Succ™️ and are deemed useless. To give the killers some extra pep and motivation, that could be a way. 🤷♂️
An excellent video as always! I've always felt bad for poor Philip. Poor guy is a veteran of war, scarred both physically and mentally, and he never really escapes it as you said. What he deserved was a peaceful life here in America, one filled with stability, peace, friends, and perhaps a wife and kids. If everyone in the Entity's clutches were to escape, I hope that he could find that life. Life may have stung him twice, but third times the charm.
i love the attention to accents! at first I thought that just might be your voice, but then I heard azaroths southern american voice and knew the more african sounding accent for philip was intentional. everyone always seems to overlook philips nigerian heritage (and, after some research and looking at other people who care about this thoughts, he's probably from the igbo people. because nigeria is not just one ethnic group!) when it's such an important part of his lore and who he is. I just love when people take into account that he's nigerian (bonus points if they reference a specific tribe), it makes me happy that that isn't being ignored. especially since philip is portrayed as a smart, educated man whose from africa. because so many non africans have this false idea about africa being this impoverished, uneducated wasteland when that's so not true
Really great video as always, just hope you don’t have Solomon back on, he’s not as funny as he clearly thinks he is. It’s really interesting to see DBD try to branch out into backstories based in real life events rather than horror cliches. Personally I connected most to the Deathslinger’s lore but I can’t wait to see what this new killer brings to the table.
Wraiths teachables are even worse when you realise they don’t fit him at all, I’d say he should have had gen slowdown perks due to his work with machinery, keep bloodhound because of that one time he noticed blood or something.
people here are listening to PBE explaining the sad backstory of the wraith, meanwhile half my focus is on the twins perks mod and figuring out which one is which by looking at their behavior. i've figured out B&C, Pop, Devour Hope, and Corrupt (tho instead of B&C PBE had coup de grace, who isn't modded, here since it's originally the twin's perk).
I always thought his story was so sad but I couldn’t help but wonder, if he hates killing so much, why does he do it in the realm? Did he just say “fuck it”? Or was his mind warped due to the entity?
Pixel I appreciate you giving Solomon a chance but it was a huge shift in tone and not for the better. Solomon if you're reading this, you can address and acknowledge The Wraith's background without jokes. It all felt quite forced, like a Jimmy Kimmel type.
The muddy man. He sure does make his story work well. I like it a lot. It's sympathetic without pushing morals in your face. It's nice! Funny bell go ding ding.

Thank you for more amazing lore coverage.
If you do a Legion video pls have a similar into
My God, that intro! 10/10!

*very poor choice of words*
Yeaaa Ngl didn’t really like this guy…
Will you make a video about the newest chapter of DBD and it's content?
Ah yes, do feel free to join the discord! We have shitposts galore, mods that are bullied by your local residents and people who’s mentality you’ll often find yourself questioning as your’s slowly drifts away!
*Fr tho, amazing video with a substantial attention to detail. And also props to Solomon for being a lovely guest and having an strangely nice voice. I’m sure we’ll have fun talking about Carmina, yknow, considering some of the things mentioned on discord lol. Keep it up, Will. You’ve come oh so far and you’re doing great!*
Im excited for more videos like this! Awesome job
I still love how Wraith is one of the most fun killers to play as and they're a base game killer.
For a character with no heartbeat.... He really makes your heart bleed.....
I just started playing and I was immediately drawn to the wraith. I even bought a skin instead of other killers lol
Thank you for talking about my bing bong boy I love him so much!!!
That voice acting was incredible
I always wondered what the music that you use in the backround for example at the sponsorship, you have this low violin sounds.
It's the Plague's menú theme
@@CrimsonHeart-jf9qn thank you !
It's very simple to rationalize the lore with him being Igbo and a Northerner. It's a big multiverse afterall. The same regional mass stavation/civil war/invasion/clusterfuck/imperial pissing match occurred. The ethnic groups were just in different locations in his timeline.
Food for thought:
Much like the Chris and Claire Redfield skins, would it be weird for there to be skins of killers returning to being human as "victims/regrets of the Entity", like Trapper, Wraith, etc?
In addition, would it be weird to create skins that symbolize their full separation from humanity to the Entity, causing the ripple to happen in the progress? Maybe the Entity does it themselves so that the killer side may kill the more human side of them to becoming full devotees to the Entity?
Looking at the Blight's and Void's (place) lore, I think there might be a little wiggle room for it. The Void is where those who got the Bad Soul Succ™️ and are deemed useless. To give the killers some extra pep and motivation, that could be a way. 🤷♂️
Since Philip worked at a junkyard operating an industrial crusher, is it possible that he could defeat the Shape?
Wraith is one of these characters that just need a hug :<
PS: Great video as always, I'll be sure to look into the podcast :3
What a great video always love videos about the lore
solomon: *get thirsty mid video*
my thoat: "my, my! what a good idea!!"
That's the best intro yet.
My favourite hide and seek player
Thankyou for this.
If he was a child in the 60s how did bakers journal mention him? The wiki says that was decades before Phillip even showed up to the realm
i did not come here to see theatre kid-on-theatre kid violence on screen today
ok the intro to this video didn't have to go this hard
The wee bit op boy himself
Ngl I never had a problem with wraith until I was getting 12 of them minimum every time I sat down to play survivor for a few hours
i love the attention to accents! at first I thought that just might be your voice, but then I heard azaroths southern american voice and knew the more african sounding accent for philip was intentional. everyone always seems to overlook philips nigerian heritage (and, after some research and looking at other people who care about this thoughts, he's probably from the igbo people. because nigeria is not just one ethnic group!) when it's such an important part of his lore and who he is.
Honestly your probably the best dbd youtuber
Really great video as always, just hope you don’t have Solomon back on, he’s not as funny as he clearly thinks he is. It’s really interesting to see DBD try to branch out into backstories based in real life events rather than horror cliches. Personally I connected most to the Deathslinger’s lore but I can’t wait to see what this new killer brings to the table.
Am i the only one who read the title as "A child of the Nigerian prince"?
The Blight is British too? Scottish and Welsh people count as being British,Blight is British
Not first. Love the content man!
very good, very good indeed ... NOW HOW THE F@CK CAN HE TURN INVISIBLE???
Is my audio off- " I came to dis country"
11:42 Hamilton, it’s a play
21:20 IS THAT A STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND REFERENCE?
Wraiths teachables are even worse when you realise they don’t fit him at all, I’d say he should have had gen slowdown perks due to his work with machinery, keep bloodhound because of that one time he noticed blood or something.
PLS DO A VID ON CRESCENDO'S STORIES NEXT 🙏🙏🙏
people here are listening to PBE explaining the sad backstory of the wraith, meanwhile half my focus is on the twins perks mod and figuring out which one is which by looking at their behavior.
i've figured out B&C, Pop, Devour Hope, and Corrupt (tho instead of B&C PBE had coup de grace, who isn't modded, here since it's originally the twin's perk).
17:44 it’s like poetry sorta they rhyme
Phillip did nothing wrong in killing those men, he most definitely would have saved lives by killing them.
I always thought his story was so sad but I couldn’t help but wonder, if he hates killing so much, why does he do it in the realm? Did he just say “fuck it”? Or was his mind warped due to the entity?
He doesn't like it. If he wanted to be all powerful, he wouldn't use a bell to announce uncloaking
@@sillylilstella - I mean, he does have an add on that silences the bell
@@iB0NKERS add-ons aren't really Canon in their use ingame
Pixel I appreciate you giving Solomon a chance but it was a huge shift in tone and not for the better. Solomon if you're reading this, you can address and acknowledge The Wraith's background without jokes. It all felt quite forced, like a Jimmy Kimmel type.
The muddy man. He sure does make his story work well. I like it a lot. It's sympathetic without pushing morals in your face. It's nice! Funny bell go ding ding.
I feel like people severely overestimate how much of dbds playerbase is horror buffs, I’d never seen any of the movies any of the killers are in until Dbd got me to watch them and even after the only one I was really impressed by was Saw
Not gonna lie, I didn't know the Wraith had burns over his body. Wow! So what I thought was mud or dried paint on his characters face is actually charred skin?! Damn that's awful. 😢
Babe wake up PBE posted a new lore video
Man I love this killer so much but of course BHVR had to fucking Nerf him into the ground
Wraith is a Sub-Zero fan I see
So wait, the entity died?
4:05 Did you put the right pictures here? or is there a joke I'm just not getting?
Soooo how do we get that awesome Wraith skin?
Solomon learning that people from different countries can love each other: Impossible!
4:48 can someone explain to me the syntax errors made? (I'm French.)
Who voiced the starting thing?
Can you do aces archive story
*screams of pain*

Today I got tunneled and face camped by a Wraith player who had a Fortnite PFP and told me he was 13 years old. At least I can still appreciate his lore I guess…
Video starts at 19:34
!!!! IT'S WRAITHY TIME!!!
