It is just trying to show that wedding cakes nowadays are extravagant. Modern wedding cakes are often theme based and are trying to be unique and individual, like reflecting hobbies or the characters of the couple.
Though I am admitting that the 2016 cake here may be not the best example to actually show and reflect that trend...
90s and 50s were my favorites. We don't speak about the 2016 cake.

I think that in recent years the 'naked cake' has become very popular as a return to more simpler old fashioned rustic styles. It's where the cake has no icing covering it and is normally decorated with real flowers.

My mom was a professional cake decorator with her own business from 1966-1998. Seeing the 1976, 1986, and 1996 cakes brought back memories of her working on cakes just like those. My favourite was the 1976 cake.

What bothers me is the 30s is always so fancy even though it was the Great Depression
People in the depression couldn't afford a big wedding, but cakes were inexpensive if you had a place to make them. Even then, the cake was often served at a small reception directly following the ceremony. This kept the costs low.

Part of the high cost of wedding cakes is labor. The more elaborate or intricate the decoration, the higher the cost. The 30s version is very Art Deco in design, streamlined and simple (compare it to that of the 20s). Much less work for the decorator and less cost for the couple.
From the research I’ve done the weddings at the time is equivalent to $,5000 today. Probably because not much good happened then. & I’d imagine that whole communities were pitching in to help

I started making wedding cakes in 1983 , l was 16 years old , they were huge ! Lots of tiers , fountains, stairs and lots of flowers and piping ! I made so many l can’t remember! Now l have terrible arthritis in my hands and bone loss ! But my wedding business was so much fun ! I loved the reception, especially the ones with dancing music!

Well to be fair, I've been to parties big enough where the 1986 cake was just enough for everyone to get a slice. I've seen bigger cakes than that in real life as well. The 2016 cake though, I'm pretty sure many can agree on that.
