You study Law! Which year are you in? Any recommendations for books on law to read in the summer?

Hey thanks for your comment! I actually haven't started university yet, I start my law degree at the start of October but I do have some recommendations for books to read - have a look if any of them interest you (most focus on the English legal system).
      - The Law Machine.
      - The Rule of Law.
      - Is Eating People Wrong?
      I hope that helps :)

I'm a first year law student in Jordan, where the Latin legal system is followed. During this quarantine I noticed how vague ,for me and my fellow classmates, the common legal system is, which I know to be followed in UK. So I decided to help myself and them by simplifying it, I searched about it and watched many videos on it, but still cant comprehend it. I dont know if the level of my language is the reason hindering my understanding, or if its actually the complexity of your legal system. Could you please make a video on it?

That's a great idea for a video, I'll try to put something together! In the meantime, I have some basic notes about the English Common Law system that breaks it down - I hope it helps.
      - In the English common law system, there are 4 main sources of law.
      1) Law made by Parliament:
o called ‘legislation’ or ‘statute law’ or ‘Acts of Parliament’.
o a valid Act of Parliament takes precedence over common/ case law.
      2) Law decided in the courts:
o called ‘common law’ or ‘case law’ - these are decisions of judges which are applied by other judges in later cases through the process of precedent.
o many fundamental legal rules have been established by judges deciding individual cases.
      3) European Union Law:
o law from the European Commission, Court of Justice of the European Union.
o European Law takes precedence over domestic law since European Communities Act 1972.
      4) European Convention on Human Rights:
o now incorporated into UK law with the Human Rights Act 1998.
o eg; Right to life (Article 2), Right to liberty and security (Article 5), Freedom of expression (Article 10).
There are 2 main ‘families’ of legal systems: Common Law & Civil Law.
      Civil Law:
      - It is a ‘codified system’ which specify all matters capable of being brought before the court.
o this means that the judge’s decision is less crucial in shaping civil law than common law.
      Common Law:
      - Legal principles are found in the decisions of judges in individual cases.
o operate with ‘binding precedent’ so judges must follow the decisions of judges in earlier similar cases.
3 meanings of the term ‘common law’:
      - Common law & Statute law
o common law is the law found in the decisions if the courts rather than legal rules in Acts of Parliament (statutes).
      - Common law & equity
o equity was designed to do justice in situations where the common law was not able to do so.
      - Common law & civil law
o difference between 2 different systems of law.
o eg; France, Japan and use civil law.
I'll work on a video that is more detailed and clear, thank you for the suggestion!

@@Tristan thank you , that really helped! But how do courts manage all those court-made-decisions ? Here we have specific and clear written codes which we can easily reach for when needed, a normal person that has nothing to do with law can easily know his basic rights and obligations, how are your laws sorted? How can a civillian know the law of his country without digging around? How does the principle ~~ Ignorance of the law is not pardoned~~ work in your case where ,at least to me, it seems kinda impossible to the law? Understand me? I cant fathom how people are supossed to know all these unwritten laws

That’s a good question, hopefully I’ll be able to give you a more complete answer soon after I start my law degree properly but this is what I understand so far: Basically it’s actually more accurate to say our laws are ‘uncodified’ rather than ‘unwritten’. A lot of the law is actually written down in Acts of Parliament and law reports of court judgements but simply don’t take he form of a constitution in the way that other countries have. Hopefully that answers your question somewhat - there’s still a huge amount for me to learn!

Thanks for helping me make my choice for uni! Although the question I have now is MacBook or windows laptop?

Thanks! That’s more up to personal preference. Macs just work with iPhones perfectly, scanned documents can be sent instantly with AirDrop and messages sync etc. They keep their value for longer (some 2012 models still sell for £500) but they’re often more expensive to buy and there’s less choice. Both are great but if you use an iPhone/ other Apple devices then in many cases it’s just more sensible to get a Mac

Hey thanks for watching! I’m actually not a medical student, I’m studying Law, but honestly just follow what you’re interested in. I definitely considered the sciences and it’s a great option if you have the aptitude for it :)
