"If you're new to Mac, holding down two fingers on the trackpad is the same as right clicking in Windows" .....THIS. THIS is why I watch your videos, sir. I'm a lifelong PC user, just now getting into the Mac world. Thank you :)
I’m a lifelong windows user and in the last decade or so, I jumped on the iPhone and iPad bandwagon Whilst umming and ahh-ing over a new laptop as a treat to myself, your videos (as well as a big shove from my Mac-loving wife) have been a key component in my decision to buy a MacBook (il mostly be using it for music composition, and I know Mac’s excel for creatives) and which model to opt for given my budget I have yet to finish watching the entirety of this video - but as I sit watching and currently opening the box of my new purchase - I just wanna say thank you for the way your videos explain things, the effort you clearly put into them and the sound advice you give. It’s the little things, the ‘two fingers to right click’ kind of stuff, that I really appreciate. It’s not until you change to an entirely foreign operating system that you realise just how much you take your knowledge for the simple things for granted! Anyway, I’m rambling - but super grateful for your content 🙏
Just this year, I decided to ditch windows after 30 years and bought my first Mac. I have found your videos invaluable. Thanks for your attention to detail. Also, you have the most calming voice 😂
13:34 if you would prefer your browser ask you where to save a file each time you save it, there is a checkbox in settings for both Safari and Chrome that let you do exactly that. You can also change the folder the browser uses as the downloads folder for default saving, if you'd like.
Ive been watching a TON of your videos recently as I knew I wanted to use Mac for wanting to pursue video and photo editing. Through your videos I decided to go with the 16 inch MacBook Pro M3Pro 11-core cpu 18-core gpu. I got a great deal on it. was going to get a M2 Max studio but you made a video talking about how this is just as great and powerful but can take it with you.. so THANK YOU!!
Oh, shortcuts can be an entire video. I agree command+space for spotlight is the most handy. I use that all the time, every day, for opening apps and performing calculations. The other that you mentioned, ctrl+cmd+shift+4 to take a snip of anything on the screen and not actually save it as a screenshot, but rather to your clipboard. I use that CONSTANTLY to send pictures of items or cars or houses or whatever to my kids and mother. It's like using the 'snipping' tool in Windows, but Windows requires you to snip, wait a second to load, copy the item, paste it, and then close the snipping tool. It takes FOREVER (comparatively), and unfortunately my work computer is a Windows laptop, and so i go through that disastrous sequence all the time. Again, ctrl+cmd+shift+4 is IMO the most underrated shortcut on the Mac, period stop :)
Shift + command + 4 and 3 for full screen . No need for ctrl by default. If you need to press all four it seems tricky with one hand :D For screen recording shift + command + 5, but there are other tools
How to use Mac. Use CMD + space bar to open finder, then type what you want. No matter if I organize icons, I end up going cmd + space "logic" or "final" and brings up lpx or fcp. Both are well worth 200$ each and I love them.
Thanks for the tips Kyle, I learned some new ones. Like you, one of the first things I do is remove most of the icons in the dock since it reduces clutter, and I can easily get what I want in the Applications folder.
Since horizontal real estate is so precious, I’ve always preferred the dock vertically on the left side of the screen, and then it never gets in the way of the app and gives more vertical space
Show path bar…where have you been all my life! (and I just turned 71). Great video. I will be migrating from a 2019 iMac to a new Mac Mini M4 Pro as soon as it arrives. Such great info here and I’m grateful for your content.
Not a ton of people know but if you make the Development directory under your User directory the icon turns into a hammer instead of a folder icon. Just a nice UI change for Finder. It might be Developer and not Development but one of them does it.
Developer. I created custom folder icons in Freeform that you can paste into the folder's Info window (highlight the folder icon and paste). This way I have easily differentiated "Downloads" folders in my Dock for local machine and iCloud.
At 7:22 you can also throw the icons out of the dock by clicking and dragging off the dock, hold the icon there for a sec till it says “Remove” and then release it.
Thank you for this video. It was pretty helpful for someone who is new to MacOS. I like how you talked about things that are really practical. But I have to say my favorite one was making the folders on top in the finder. I hated the way it looked by default, just looked so disorganized unlike my windows machine. So this made a HUGE difference. It gave me some sanity back! lol.
Just got a 14” M4 Pro 14 core cpu 20 core gpu 1TB and I spent about an hour or so day one doing much of what you did in this video. I also get custom icon pngs for the apps apple allows you to change. great video, I subscribed.
Thank you so much for this. The machine feels less daunting for me now with this video. I recently switch from windows to Mac and i hv to say some days are very frustrating as shortcuts and features tht i used to are now soo different in Mac but i am getting better at it..
I agree and use all the shortcuts and most of the other features you mentioned. The only thing I do differently is I use Super Duper for backing up my Mac which I do on a regular basis. It clones my drive while backing up the latest files I have on my Mac. Your videos are always well done and I appreciate your hard work in producing them!
Create a new list of folders instead of using the default “Documents” “Pictures ” etc . This will help you down the line if you don’t want to use iCloud. They will be always in the same folders you create . Hide the default folders and pin your created folders.
Really useful video, I just bot a MacBook Air M2 and it was really weird don't finding a C: folder like in Windows. Also I'm having trouble exporting videos from icloud to the local storage for editing. I guess ther is a learnig curve. Keep the great work! Saludos desde México.
You can simply drag and drop dock icons into the trash, which keeps the app itself. Great overview and tips! That path bar is helpful; still learning after six years :D. But to see the desktop without icons, do you just need to minimize all windows? Double-clicking the wallpaper still shows the desktop icons, or is there an easy way to hide them all? It seems like Mission Control and Desktop 2 switch will be the fastest way while using gestures, no need to minimize or exit the apps. One click on desktop will then reveal icons if needed
transferring data between apple silicon macs using a usb c cable is the fastest for me, it works seamlessly and very fast and smooth, it literally took minutes.
alt+cmd+esc = force quit applications (i do it with my left thumb on alt+cmd at once and middle finger on esc) right ctrl+left/right arrow = switching between workspaces
if you already own osx one can upload thier settings, prefrences, etc online free with ease so when going to another osx one can just use that wi thoug spending time getting it the way you want. works for osx and not adobe and other aps unless you migrate them etc.
With the migrate function from an old Mac to a new - is it possible to choose what to transfer to the new one or is it only possible to transfer the whole thing? I have some older apps, that I’m not sure I can find again, but at the same time I don’t want to risk transferring all the junk files hidden somewhere on the old machine 😂
Great video, I just finished watching it. So many good tips, thanks! 👍👍 And I just subscribed too! I have a question if you don't mind-- I understand that the MacBook Air M2 automatically powers on when the screen is first lifted up, without needing to press the Power (Touch ID) key/button.. So I'm wondering, is there any way to disable this "auto power-on" feature, or is this unchangeable..? Thanks for your time!
The two things I do that you didn’t mention are disabling caps lock, and because I started on windows, swapping the control and “alt” key positions. I can’t seem to untrain my left pinky. :)
You know what would make a good video is for you to explain CleanMyMac X. What do each of the options do? Is it recommended to do all of them? Speaking for me, I've had the app for yers, but I'm hesitant to run some of the options because I don't understand what will be done.
If you work with DAW apps, as in it is one of your pri.ary sources of income, do not turn on any sort of automatic system updates. Apple is notorious for putting out updates that make your audio plug ins and peripherals non-functional. The amount of time needed for Apple or the vendors to fix it can be great.
Every few months or so, I reset my Mac and start from scratch. This is because a Mac can accumulate storage as time goes by. It can be a pain to set everything up the way you had it but your Mac will run a lot smoother as a result. Using CleanMyMac X on a regular basis does help.
Thank you for this insightful video. I am new to the Mac OS system and am doing just ok with the basics. I don't know if you offer advice but here goes a question. I'm trying to attach a photo from my photo library to Face book but there is an obstacle somewhere. I imagine I somehow have to give permission to the Mac to allow it to send an image but where. That's the best I've come up with trying to research this problem. I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask . Whatever the case thanks for your very informative work.
Thank you. I llike this video, its very useful for beginners. I shall soon set up external drive, so I will watch other episodes as well. I also wonder how to make the machine resistant for bugs. I have no clue what to do. I am now having MBA with M3. I'm Chrome OS mind, so everything is so new.
