Hey guys! I love both of you and the content you all put out and I will never stop enjoying it it, but I wanted to share something and hopefully you all see this. Now I know in the grand scheme of things my opinion doesn’t matter and you all are going to and should do what’s best and right for you guys- and there’s nothing wrong with that whatsoever. I just wanted to say I first found you guys years ago with no to little knowledge of pedals, pedalboards, and the like and I can now attribute a large portion of my knowledge to you guys. From your videos, you have equipped me with information that’s actually been able to help a lot of my friends with their music and effects questions and also with purchasing equipment that best suits them- which is a huge deal. I just wanted to tell y’all please don’t stop making informative videos that really go in depth about how pedals, amps, and guitars work and how they all intermingle with each other. You guys really are a valuable resource whether you think so or not and you both are truly making an impact in people’s lives- at least in my life. Thank you both so much and I hope you all have a blessed holiday season!!!
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment - we genuinely appreciate it! Without you fine folks, this show is nothing, so thank you again for the kind words and feedback!
same story for me InLostMotion. I came to TPS a few years ago to watch the vid on Pedal Order. I went from 4 pedals to 14 in a year and gained a ton of knowledge from these guys. went back and watched all past eps and haven't missed one since.
This might explain it better. I was messing around with Flanging/Phasing in 1967. Michael Dacre Barclay of Decca Records showed me how to get it on a mono domestic tape recorder. It simply involved putting a shiny piece of plastic (i.e. slippery) over the erase head - in order that one can record and playback at the same time. Now once you've recorded the unaffected bit of music that you want flanged/phased you introduce the mic adjacent to the speaker that the music is playing back through. In other words you are recording from the speaker the music playing back on the same piece of tape. By moving the mic a short distance back and towards the speaker the effect is made and recorded on to the original dry piece of music. No pedals of this existed anywhere then. Great fun! I was sixteen at the time and working at Decca (where I was also a pal of Mike Vernon) it felt like being at the centre of the universe. Cheers, Pete.
Well, I've never liked the sound of flange, certainly never owned a flange pedal, but you guys are likely the ONLY two gents I'd watch talk about them for an hour, and with a massive smile on my face. Thanks as ever guys.
Hi, guys. The Komorebi (木漏れ日) is pronounced with long O's. The Re has a long A sound, as in "ray". Finally, the Bi is a long E, as in "bee". Komorebi means "sunbeams" in Japanese and that is, in fact, what the kanji spells out between the knobs. Greetings from Tokyo. ❤️ Think sunlight streaming through a forest canopy and you've got the meaning. [ Edit to add: I have an early 2000s analog Maxon FL301 reissue flanger that I love to bits. Dialling back the width and regen and putting a Danelectro Tuna Melt tremolo behind it is pretty freaking tasty. ]
That taste of Thropy just opens up the sound and makes it huge. What a tone! Flangers have always come closest to the slow Leslie sound for me when you want to play Badge or something. And several of these do that. But the Thorpy has a sort of Dimension sound to it that just fills up the room. Dan, if you want to accentuate the leading edge or transient of a note, try turning the pick to the side as Matt Schofield does. With a square edged pick (as opposed to a nicely smoothed one, or worn) I've found that I can get closer to that dynamic thing that he does where notes jump with extra thickness as well as in level. Not the same as a leading edge "chirp" but just that grab you by the collar "listen to this note" thing that he has.
I noticed the Komo Rebi, which apparently is a delightful Japanese word describing the effect of sunlight streaming through the leaves of trees, has a unique 15v power supply, how did you, or would you, handle that on a professional pedalboard?
This episode is yet another great example of gorgeous things that make one want to pick up and play. Enthusiasm and experimentation for the win. Thanks guys!
Dan, Matsushita and Panasonic are the same company. Panasonic was more of a brand (primarily for Non Japanese markets) because they couldn't use the "National" name they were using in Japan. Matsushita was often the name used on components or OEM items (like 3.5" Floppy drives) At some point they just rebranded to Panasonic. So those Panasonic chips might just be rebadged or variants.
Big thumbs up from me on the Thorpy flanger. I’m with Mick in that the blend control solves probably the main issues I have with this type of modulation. Dan putting the dial on 9 o’clock sounded immense!
Flange is my favorite effect also. Thank Dan for sharing you hunt for your perfect flanger. I lean your way, crystalline with no jet. I always enjoy yours and Mick’s journeys. And a belated Happy Birthday.
I went for the Komo-Rebi in the end, because it offers a wide range of tones from 'normal' to 'insane' (it does a nice CE-2 type chorus as well on subtle settings), it works well with synths, and it looks f***ing cool...
Good lord- the komorebi is amazing- wow. The part with the Harlot into the komorebi is just so deep, rich, animated, and interesting sounding- simply amazing.
For a long time I could not understand why anyone would use a flanger. I had tried a couple but did not find them useful. After your previous episode on flangers I decided to get one again and then I realized I had been doing it all wrong. On a flanger, the typical pedal approach (start with all knobs at noon, then all of them on full) does not work. No: with a flanger you set all of the pots conservatively and start to raise only one of them past noon. A much easier approach to a good sound. Once you learn that you realize that the flanger is one of the most powerful effects there is. Anything from a doubling type of sound to a chorusy sound to a jet plane swoosh and beyond. I really love mine now, thanks to your show.
I completely agree with your appreciation of a more subtle use of effects, particularly time effects. Just a slight bit of flange to add, as you say, “shimmer”, really works for me, so much more than the “Here’s a flanger on”, sound. Same for delay. chorus, tremolo, etc., in so many instances. I have had the TC Electronics, Stereo Chorus, Pitch Modulator and Flanger (black box with attached power cord) on my board since the early ‘90s when it was considered to be the absolute best chorus, etc., pedal. I expect that you guys are quite aware of it. In my opinion, it still provides the most musical chorus and flanger and is unmatched by anything since.
As usual, QUALITY content! Well done!! I’ve never considered how Flange might punch up my playing. Really fascinating stuff. Glad I watched even though flange wasn’t on my radar... now it’s a MUST HAVE!!! Many thanks! Cheers!
TPS would release a flanger episode the day after I rearrange my board and swap the flanger for a chorus... I thought I was set for a while but of course now I want to swap back. It never ends! Thanks guys :)
Awesome as usual! I might have to look into getting the Thorpy when it comes out. I agree with Mick about the issues of most flangers being either too harsh or not ideal tones.
Here’s an idea- make your own flanger using the wetter box. Flange is pretty simple to make using other pedals after splitting and recombining signals. You could even use a master sequencer pedal to sync up multiple modulation effects. The man made his own pedalboard version of a tape echo, for Pete’s sake!
Halfway through this deep-dive into flangers (educational as usual) I noticed your That Pedal Show anagram t-shirts. That's awesome. Help Thaw Toads indeed 🤘. Gonna go find out what flanger Dan has been using recently. Cheers, y'all.
Dog ears. Mick, this stuff doesn't come though RUclips. I mostly listen to these though a Focusrite interface and studio monitors and when you jump up to "fix" something, I've often no idea why.
@@stevekirby7333 It's usually input gain on the recording channel strips. Conscious of clipping. Otherwise it might be subtle once recorded but in the room just makes things about more comfortable and flowing for me and Dan. I think a lot of people maybe don't realise these shows are basically one take, playing and everything. It really helps to be comfortable and enjoying the sounds. We're both the kind of guitarists who play so much worse when we don't like the sound!
Great show guys! i have the e-lady which is great but use an MXR micro flanger at gigs for floyd/purple rain/marillion type sounds. found the mxr has a slight boost and only 2 controls. btw, as steve rothery is a G2 user, did you get a chance to do a rig rundown on the recent tour? been a marillion fan since 1983 and he is one of my favourite guitarists.
Last year you guys made a really big deal about the Earthquaker Pyramids at an event and shot a few videos. You mentioned that you may have found Dan's new flanger back then and that you would be getting one when you got back home so you could spend more time with it on the show. We haven't seen it again, are there plans to bring it back?
Pyramids is a beast. Has so much though I wish I could midi (or foot) switch through the presets. It kills in a stereo rig. Covers a few flavors of flange and all chorusing needs for me, for now.
I just want to brag on how brilliant of a designer Nick Thorpy is and what a wonderful addition to my lineup the camoflange is. I can’t wait to try some more of his products and love that he is working with a former designer for lovetone.
I've always been an MXR M117 man and I'm having a similar problem. I've had mine since 1979 and it sounds wonderful but it is heavy, mains powered and I do worry about it dying. I could do with something smaller, lighter, 9v powered but sounds much like it. MXR's own modern version just doesn't do it for me. Any suggestions?
Phenomenal show as usual gents! I recently acquired an identical Supro Jamesport on a lark. I must say I’ve been completely taken aback by the character of that unassuming goldfoil. Seems it also has a rather unique interaction with the volume knob. Very cool!
RetroSonic has a v2 that is Brighter & supposedly near-Spot-on to the Mistress? ( also ) PastFX has two more Mistress-clones: The Reticon ( tons of controls ) and the Elastic Mattress??? Update: Ordered a Retro Sonic.
Very interesting! Too bad though you didn't include the Alexander Pedal f13 Neo Flanger. It also does the Blend/Mix and a lot more in a very compact Size.
Which came first the Chorus or Flanger? Obviously Tape Flanging was much older, but were short delays used for Chorus first then shortening the delay and adding Regen sounded like tape Flanging? Or the opposite?
Great show guys. Slightly off topic: dan, do you have some photos over the years of the wear and tear to red? I know there's a chip in there that you're not happy about but over all its looking well well loved. Would be great to see a 5-10 min vlog on that guitar (and include the time you lost it :P)
I have not seen the video yet, but....Has Dan found his ultimate Flanger Pedal? NOO!! There´s no way to do that hahaha, the Pedal Journey is endless. Greetings from Spain, I love your channel!
The Thorpy Camoflange is rightly named and is the most versatile flanger that does what all the other pedals can do and i wish my stereo electric flanger had a wet/dry blend control ! At times i need a much less wet flange sound !
Awesome video thank you! One avenue that hasn’t been explored on the show is stereo amplifiers and I am hopeful that might come in the future. My main interest is the magnatone amps with stereo vibrato! Also tonebender episode?
You mentioned Paul Gilberts Airplane Flanger, ive had the AF2 sig pedal for years now and its the only pedal I can’t replace... Have you guys ever used it or thoughts on it? Its perfect for me regardless and i suggest you should try it sometime. Love the show, great video, keep it up guys ☺️ Glen
Hey Dan (and Mick) love the show been watching since the beginning when you guys first started and love your content. I learn something new every week and it makes me want to start my own studio in the future. Dan i know you have a love for flanger pedals so I want to recommend one to you just as another colour to try out. I love my Ibanez CF7 Chorus/Flanger so much and have been using it for over 10 years now. Its from the Tone Lok series of pedals and i really like the tones i get out of it. It has a knob to control the delay time and I find it very useful for dialling in the perfect sound I'm looking for. The level does drop a bit in the wack'd mode but that is more for the crazy sounds (though i've found some very subtle setting there too), but the normal mode is full and fat. Love it on clean sounds (almost an always on pedal for me) and its killer after a fuzz for solos. The speed and depth controls can be set to 0 meaning you can set a fixed delay point which can be really cool for a solo with a short tape delay. Just wanted to mention it to you because I don't see a lot of people talking about it and its become a favourite of mine over the years. Keep up the awesome show guys and cheers from Perth! Would love to see you guys down under someday :)
I think you guys used retrosonic flanger first version where top highs are much lower than new version of this pedal. The new version is now almost identical to mistress
Wow, and WOW! that Thorpy Camoflange nails it. The fact that it is only available a Pre-Order listing, shipping in late February or early March does not surprise me. Thanks again Dan and Mitch... now what to do with my TCE Vortex?
Hey you guys! I'm wondering if either of you have ever considered the Fox Rox Through Zero Flanger. I've been using mine (original issue) since he started cranking them out and it is above and beyond the the pedals you have featured in this already great video. It used to be that this pedal was very expensive since it was made in small quantities and therefore extremely expensive, however he has re-issued the pedal so it is available at a reasonable street cost. Cheers !
Dan, I can't remember, have you played with the EQD Pyramids yet? It's got a bit of everything in there. Does it not get that high sparkle you're looking for?
Dan's looking for a modern pedal to nail the sound of his old analog EHX Mistress, they always try pedals with analog Mistress-inspired circuits. EQD Pyramids is a fully digital crazy machine, it can probably make a similar sound but it's a whole different type of pedal.
I completely get where Dan is coming from here. Once you find *your flanger* it bleeds into your soul, let alone your sound, & trying to find a replacement/alternative is a bastard of a struggle.
When I first got into That Pedal Show what hooked me were the let's find the best Big Muff/Klon/tape Delay shows. What you have gone on to do is fantastic, it is however wonderful revisit the single pedal format show. Loved this one. When you did the Big Muff show, I got Muffroom Cloud (as it was). When you did the Klon show, I got the Tumnus, then an Archer and then a real Klon. From the last of these shows I managed to get hold of a real Mistress. I see the Camoflange being ordered on day one. My wife is not a fan of this show! Keep up the good work.
When I put my Mistress on top of certain amps I can get different rhythmic patterns from it depending on the knob settings. I’ve recorded some of ‘em and then used the recordings in making beats. 😇
I don’t think I have ever had a flanger on my board maybe this video shall change my mind. Maybe this sound will make a come back. Lol ...... I kid because I love . You guys know that ;) looking Forward to the video as always
Can I ask - Which one is more Andy Summers-like? I am looking for a: chimey, shimmering, chorusy Flanger? Appreciate any input. ( currently using the E-Lady)
So glad you have found your new flange-love, Dan.. well done Thorpy,. Here's a question though what was your favourite knob settings on the mooer e-lady when it was on your board ??? and do you still prefer flange into drive, or drive into flange ? With the chamoflange to me though, the drive into flange sounded much better .. Thoughts please.
Would a dedicated eq just for the mistress with both tied to the same g2 switch work? Eliminate the drop off in volume only reason or is the mistress also too noisy when gigging?
Komo rebi all the way. Everyday. And just imagine controlng the parameters via CV.. This is something that we guitarits never play with. The possibilities are endless.
Best/most hilarious TPS moment ever @57:15 Dan: it has the NOS Matsushita chips in them, so they’ve gone full on down the rabbit hole. Mick: is that important? Dan: uh... yeah!? (face reads “duh!”) 😂
Idk how but you guys are posting videos about the specific things that I’ve trying to figure out lately and they’re posting just as I’m thinking about them. Most notably the recent EL84/Vox video, as I’m searching for a Vox style amp, and now a video about searching for an Electric mistress style flange as I am looking for one... it’s like you are reading my minds 😂
23.20: 'Aah Taylor.' Hilarious. Especially after Mick's self congratulation on explaining the difference b/w chorus and flange. (Must be Dan's 'favourite' ) as there was no admonishment- 'Don't call out Taylor- I'm glad you knew the answer but hands up okay?' You two have the best job and workmates you could wish for. 5 stars.
Hey Dan! Thanks for finding the perfect flanger. I’ve had the A/DA PBF model for some time and it does sound great, but I’ve always missed that top end you mention. I am very glad I don’t have to explain watching a video discussing the mistress and harlot and how they sound so good together.
Been eagerly awaiting this one, I too have an original 18v mistress that I love, but it's so fragile and finicky, excited to see how these others stack up
Flanger is an effect I get sick of pretty quickly, but I loved the sound of the EHX with the Harlot through those amps, and I can see some real potential in the camoflange.
That komorebi really seems to get past the thing that always put me off extreme flangey sounds - however crazy you had it it still seemed to allow the tone of the guitar to be the main thing, rather than "guitar + whooshy noise on top". Maybe this is just because I can't dial in a flanger.
Nice one. I have the A/DA here - the sockets are too close together for most pancake type plugs, but I've just discovered the SquarePlug - sorted. The adjustments are sensitive, the odd-even thing comes into play depending where it's set, odd sounds better for the more chorus type sounds.
I’ve had my 59 American Vintage Strat for several years now. Love it. I really think it’s as close to a Fender custom shop in terms of quality that you can find for the money
Hey everyone! I have a 1976 v2 electric mistress, someone added a trim pot that add or remove gain. Personally I add like 10% of volume and it sounds killer. Pretty sure even better than a non-moded one. But I really like the camoflange and will buy one maybe this year cause I dont want my mistress to die too soon… good job !!! :)

One (dual mode) overdrive.
One delay.
SEVEN FLANGERS!!

Incredible tones today! The amps, the pedals, the guitars... everything!
Cheers!
Hard to beat Thorpy. Everything from him that I've heard has been amazing.
Phenomenal show as usual gents! I recently acquired an identical Supro Jamesport on a lark. I must say I’ve been completely taken aback by the character of that unassuming goldfoil. Seems it also has a rather unique interaction with the volume knob. Very cool!
Are you guys planning a full demo of the Wampler Terraform or will you include it in a Pedal Jam episode or other video?
RetroSonic has a v2 that is Brighter & supposedly near-Spot-on to the Mistress? ( also ) PastFX has two more Mistress-clones: The Reticon ( tons of controls ) and the Elastic Mattress??? Update: Ordered a Retro Sonic.
Stupid question maybe (I’m not much of a flanger user) but what’s the issue with the newer EHX Mistress if you’re trying to replace the original?
I didnt know I am THAT interested in pedals, watched the whole thing and I will definitely stay for more
Very interesting! Too bad though you didn't include the Alexander Pedal f13 Neo Flanger. It also does the Blend/Mix and a lot more in a very compact Size.
Hmmmm, why is the CamoFlange Dan's favorite?
1. It has lots of knobs
2. It has flashy green lights
3. It's really shiny!
:-))
Which came first the Chorus or Flanger? Obviously Tape Flanging was much older, but were short delays used for Chorus first then shortening the delay and adding Regen sounded like tape Flanging? Or the opposite?
Great show guys. Slightly off topic: dan, do you have some photos over the years of the wear and tear to red? I know there's a chip in there that you're not happy about but over all its looking well well loved. Would be great to see a 5-10 min vlog on that guitar (and include the time you lost it :P)
QUESTION: If Walrus Audio did a Julia/Lillian type Flanger pedal would Dan be interested?
shawn shipstad lol, why are you here?
15:48 amazed by Dan’s fingerpicking
I have not seen the video yet, but....Has Dan found his ultimate Flanger Pedal? NOO!! There´s no way to do that hahaha, the Pedal Journey is endless.
Greetings from Spain, I love your channel!
Dan: I still play the Top Gun Theme. Like the best plate of chips, it is hoaching with cheese 😁
Stuart Bowlerwell cheese is indeed the word!
The Thorpy Camoflange is rightly named and is the most versatile flanger that does what all the other pedals can do and i wish my stereo electric flanger had a wet/dry blend control !
At times i need a much less wet flange sound !
I never owned a mistress but every time I got to play one, I just got lost in the sounds for an hour. Beautiful and inspiring sound.
Love the show, great video, keep it up guys ☺️
Glen
Thanks again for another wonderful show. I look forward to Friday evenings !
I've got an old MXR Flanger and finally an explanation of what REGEN actually does. Thanks lads for another great ep. Rock🤘🤟🖖🤙
I think you guys used retrosonic flanger first version where top highs are much lower than new version of this pedal. The new version is now almost identical to mistress
I just ordered the v2 ( waiting 4-6 weeks for it ) = Selling my E-Lady
Wow, and WOW! that Thorpy Camoflange nails it.
The fact that it is only available a Pre-Order listing, shipping in late February or early March does not surprise me. Thanks again Dan and Mitch... now what to do with my TCE Vortex?
Flange that top end! Surprised self- modulation passed without DAN in hysterics !!! Great episode guys & congrats Adrian !!!!!
Can the camoflange sound paint chip close to the electric mistress, or would the elastic mattress be better for that? 5:23
Keep up the good work.
id like to know whats on your board currently
I love my TC thunderstorm flanger. Analogue bucket brigade yoke was only about 30 quid. Sounds great
Got one used too. Very usable kinda versatile, dirt cheap
When I put my Mistress on top of certain amps I can get different rhythmic patterns from it depending on the knob settings. I’ve recorded some of ‘em and then used the recordings in making beats. 😇
31:17 - This tone is a very "Tool" esque sound. I love it!
Hah!
First time of reading a reference to TOOL on tps! And right as I was thinking, "Man... Opiate!"
+1 and many a thumbs up for seeing the DGT!
I don’t think I have ever had a flanger on my board maybe this video shall change my mind. Maybe this sound will make a come back. Lol ...... I kid because I love . You guys know that ;)
looking Forward to the video as always
I have ordered a Thorpy Flanger!! it ticks all the boxes I could hope for :) that blend/tone knob alone is a major perk
Bought the Retro Sonic and Camoflange because of this episode. The Hartman is incredible also!!!!
Can I ask - Which one is more Andy Summers-like? I am looking for a: chimey, shimmering, chorusy Flanger? Appreciate any input. ( currently using the E-Lady)
Befor on the left and After on the right would give a huge Guitar part😉🤘
So glad you have found your new flange-love, Dan.. well done Thorpy,. Here's a question though what was your favourite knob settings on the mooer e-lady when it was on your board ??? and do you still prefer flange into drive, or drive into flange ? With the chamoflange to me though, the drive into flange sounded much better .. Thoughts please.
Addendum to Mooer e-lady question .. I find the colour pot is unusable past 2 o'clock
You will need a MIDI master with an LFO and a Molten Voltage CV-Sync.
Best/most hilarious TPS moment ever @57:15
Dan: it has the NOS Matsushita chips in them, so they’ve gone full on down the rabbit hole.
Mick: is that important?
Dan: uh... yeah!? (face reads “duh!”) 😂
Hahaha!!! More explained in the video we made with Thorpy... :0)
Why Pedal Show dont make a video talk about Lovetone pedals and Alternatives ? Regards from Portugal Lisbon. I love your Videos !
Been eagerly awaiting this one, I too have an original 18v mistress that I love, but it's so fragile and finicky, excited to see how these others stack up
Really dig that Black Strat! Thanks for the post.
Flanger is an effect I get sick of pretty quickly, but I loved the sound of the EHX with the Harlot through those amps, and I can see some real potential in the camoflange.
absolutely loved "Jammin with the BF1 " :-) , The Komo Rebi is my fav ...
Loved that jazzy Jingle Bells at 7:52 !! Well done Mick !! :D :D
LOVE seeing the Tremlord in there!!!
I’ve had my 59 American Vintage Strat for several years now. Love it. I really think it’s as close to a Fender custom shop in terms of quality that you can find for the money
Loved Mick’s ‘BBC-style present tense history narrative’ interjection, gonna heat (and use) that everywhere now!
