- You have £500 or $500 to spend on a pedalboard. What do you choose?
Life too short for long RUclips videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! Way back in the mists of time (June 2017 in fact) we did a £350 pedalboard challenge show. We got loads of requests asking us to up the budget a bit, so a mere four years later, here it is. Ahem…
Truth be told, Dan and I prefer living with our heads entirely in the sand / up our own backsides and we gave up worrying about gear budget many moons ago, along with hopes of wealth, a safe and secure life or any sort of quality retirement.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, most people are a little more considered, and do put life before gear and therefore have to think about budget. Yawn. With that in mind, just what kind of serious board can you put together for £500? A pretty gosh-darned good one as it goes…
Please enjoy the episode!

I was thinking Ansel Adams, but you right.
OMFG!!!!!! Right!

Gentlemen, just a word of thanks for being my RUclips guitar “comfort food” in what’s been a strange and difficult week. I’m a Presbyterian pastor and had to do a funeral today for a fifteen year old boy who died in a tragic accident. In between counseling the family, planning logistics for a huge service, and trying to be a good husband and father, the two of you provided a calm respite that was - as always - fun and educational. Thanks y’all! ❤️
Oh John, that’s heartbreaking, so sorry to hear that.
Praying for you John!
Nobody else on youtube embodies the joy of music more than you two.
Thank you!
I've never weighed it but I'm sure my pedal board is under 500 pounds
But that's not *your* pedal board, it's the peoples pedal board. Since I *need* the pedal board more than you, it's imperative that you send it to me.
Thts A Good One . Lol
@@tomfoolery2082 it's probably pretty nice. I bet the parents get whatever tickles his fancy.
What about when it’s wet…
bro im eating, chill
Versatile under £500 pedalboard
Dan & Mick: This is so difficult!
Ryan Burke: *laughs in affordaboard*
Great video guys! Got an idea for another one:
Take a really cheap pedalboard with cheap power supply, gain staging, wobbly stuff and reverb - see how it sounds then make upgrades to each section and see where your money is best spent if you have to compromise on some areas
For instance on my board I'm running some fairly middling pedals on a super affordable power supply, but I don't whether upgrading pedals is pointless without upgrading the PSU, or whether I'd be best off putting money into the gain staging and keeping the rest cheap etc.
Keep up the good work!
GREAT IDEA!
great show idea.
I like this. I've got just three or four pedals, not even on a board, and I finally got a cheap power unit to upgrade that side of things. I'm sure that there are a lot of casual guitarists who can't pull the trigger on better cables/power because of the opportunity cost: a new pedal is always more "exciting" than utility purchases.
That Pedal Show Another interesting idea would be to test your own personal pedalboards against a pre-arranged multi-effect digital pedalboard (like the Line6 M13 or the Line6 HX Effects)
@@joseroriz4513 Or another approach would be to start with an all-Boss board and see how cheap a board can be put together that beats every single Boss pedal.
"I'd spend 39 pounds on thickening" + Mick's slow, unfolding chuckle is an absolute classic TPS moment. 59:10
Ha! Glad there’s still some semblance of a sense of humour out there Charlie! Thank you!
Yes. Need that thickness for the dirty stuff.
@@ThatPedalShow there is a pedal with 3 modes: normal-fat-lard!!!
Whenever I hear Dan play, my brain automatically puts some chorus on his guitar sound.
I'm sitting watching this in my underpants, in a hotel, the day before flying home from a four month trip offshore. Got loads of new gear to go home to and literally couldn't be happier. Thanks for all the great videos. From a wee burnt Scotsman 😁.
"I'll sell you my trelicopter for $33" - "I'm tempted" = MONOPOLY the pedal board edition.
H. I'm k
The reverb jam was joyous, please jam together more often during the show!
There's something funny about having to mod a pedal train. You had one job pedal train!
Every TPS video - Mick: plays at 102db++, eyes closed or giving Dan the lead guitarist face, happy chap. All is right with the world.
Every TPS video - Mick (when Dan plays at anything over 90db): adopts FOH engineer look of concern, staring at at off-screen input levels, glares at Dan, checks db meter.
Fab video as ever, chaps. J Rockett should be happy campers the last few weeks as well. Loving the current pickups in Blue (prefer the black strat’s sound currently tho).
It’s the transients of the Tele. He tickles and then he smashes. I know what my transients will hit because I do the audio. Dan is blissfully unaware!
@@ThatPedalShow ignorance is bliss in dans world!…..
🤣
@@ThatPedalShow I’m using that line next time I’m doing a two-guitarist gig and I want to turn up.
@@ThatPedalShow “He tickles then he smashes” is also a t-shirt, surely. Mind you, so is “It’s the transients of the tele”…
I just realised the new tps logo is set at 2 o'clock. I wonder if this is to do with Mick's saying "all gain pedals sound the best at 2 o'clock"
But yes. Of course!
Mick, your American accent is hilarious and dead on.
Perfection
Guys, the three shows of latest weeks are super interesting for me. I find them wholesome in some way. Keep it up, thank you very much.
It's the hat 🎩🤣
Hats off - not!
First of all, great show. Second of all, I love how your tactic of waiting for the reverb to trail off so you can swap from amp mics to vocal mics provides a pause that makes for really nice, non-rushed pacing of the show, and seemingly gives you a chance to fully formulate your thoughts. A refreshing change of pace from the fast paced, content overload that plagues the rest of my feed.
Mick’s American accent will haunt me in my dreams forever
add Jeremy Clarkson‘s American accent in the mix and you’ll be all set for a super haunty dream hahah
It was actually pretty decent
I challenge anyone who has enjoyed this show so much over the years to end up with a £500 board! Simply impossible! Great work lads and keep it up cheers!
😆 far too true. Unfortunately I need to change my handle to “More$ThanTalent”. 😝
@@chipsterb4946 me too my friend 😁
Dan's tone around 50:30 with the Komorebi absolutely blew me away, and the great playing didn't hurt either. Awesome show as always, gents!
I’d love to see a show where you don’t have a budget for the whole board but for each pedal (best OD under $75, best delay under $150, etc)
We seriously need more of these types of videos with you two jamming, we don't get enough of that! Pleasure to the ears!
Take care and stay safe guys 👍🏻
I really like the look Dan has been rocking lately. He seems like such a kind person full of generativity, and his current getup definitely reflects that.
Ah, cheers 🤓🙏
Another idea: The big 5 board challenge. Meaning, make a pedalboard with at least one pedal from each of the “big 5” pedal companies (Boss, TC, MXR, EHX, And Ibanez). Maybe 6-8 pedals deriving from drive, distortion, fuzz, boost, compression, mod/filter, delay, and reverb. (No duplicating the same category)And only one mega-pedal allowed. Or Something like that…
Always love to see genuine joy like the noodling chord interplay in the reverb section
I have 7 pedals, a power bank and an aluminum board that cost me about $450 and I consider that to be pretty extravagant!
It's so awesome to watch you guys enjoying each others sounds. Please make more shows like this!
I've got several kids and very little money to spend on gear. I purchased a Harley Benton HB 35 and the Pickups. I then purchased 5 Joyo Pedals and I was surprised how well things turned out. I play in a small church with a keyboard, bass, acoustic guitarist, and a small trap set. Thanks to you guys we've managed to learn how to make even inexpensive equipment sound pretty good. Thank you for this post. It gives us ideas on how to upgrade our perspective rigs.
What's a trap set? That all sounds cool!
I guess I know I've watched TPS alot when I thought to myself, "Mick, the chorus needs to go before the delay." Gold star for me.
I'm always happy to see the Spark Mini given it's due. It really is a brilliant little thing that makes absolutely everything sound better. In fact I'm bloody well putting it back on my board. Now!
Wow ! You two are in the pocket with the shows at the mo’ - another fantastic long watch to really deep dive into the subject but still explain everything so clearly.
That’s a really very difficult skill to master - go into such detail without losing us amateurs !!!
Mick 'Crowded Housing' Dan with his chorus & strat was a nice touch.
A pedal board is for life not just for Christmas.
Always love you fellas.
To be honest, I reckon plugging straight in and wearing Dan's hat is all anyone needs for awesome tone :)
“Komorebi” is one word. It’s a word that describes “The dappled light that shines through trees” in Japanese. Great name for a pedal!!!
The name alone is enough for me to want to buy one let alone these great tones
@@WarmthandMischeif amen! I’ve been fascinated by cloud shadows for a long time. And I really wanted one before knowing what the name meant.
You mean, as opposed to slang references to sexual organs, which are actually welcome and thoughtful, compared to many ?
This time my vote goes to Dan, as the Touch Drive and Spark sound really good to me, and I'm not as much of a fan of the Broadcast. Also, Dan managed to get a tap tempo delay from a great pedal builder in the budget. This exercise reminds me that pedals don't have to be expensive to be great. I prefer to support pedal companies that actually build pedals in their country, and that usually means paying a bit more.
I hope there are more of these. It is a fun way introduce new pedals in various contexts. I miss the pick and mix, which scratched a similar itch, but understand that they get lost in -and confused with- all of the sponsored reviews (though I never took them that way).
I'm a Voxy guy, but the cleans out of that Tone King are so, so beautiful.
Makes my Friday when these are posted, awesome job guys 👌
RIFFS 4 DAYS! Excellent job guys. This sparks so much joy!
There's always this moment between you two (in this case, the end of the "reverb jam") where something in my head just wants to shout; "Party on, Wayne!" "Party on, Garth!"
I’ll say this now and add more after I finish: That Bottom built Danocaster sounds stupendous.
It’s a truly amazing guitar 🎸 🤓👍
Karl’s guitars always have a wonderful quality in their sounds.
@@ThatPedalShow damn skippy
@@dobster5819 He’s gonna be quite successful
@@AlbusBand hi guys thanks for the reply. Karl’s kite’s are already world famous .
Love the challenges. Is it me, or does Dan always talk himself out of winning them, though?
The full size Spark was one of the first pedals I bought (£39) and has never left my board, such a great combination of boost and tone shaping.
Well done guys! Seeing how your fingers, brain react to each sound reminds me of the most important parts of a guitar sound: heart, brain, feel and groin :D
I could listen to Dan play a Flanger all day long. Always magic, always inspiring.
Ah, cheers mate, I do love it 🤓🙏
Lol! @40:10 I had my eyes off the screen and I assumed it was a perfectly timed commercial and found some comedy on it and I look over and it’s Mick 😂
The Bad Love lick towards the end made my day. You guys are the best!
TPS mojo is back! I LOVE these budget challenges! Awesome guys, thanks for great entertainment mixed with just the right amount of learning. Cheers!
Really great episode guys. For the most part the core tones were all there. Almost as if the main sacrifice is convenience in that getting to all of the tones takes some bending down and fiddling during a gig. Helps to have two killer players, killer amps, and some awesome axes. ;) thanks as always.
Such serendipity. Double checking Mick's Broadcaster price for USD conversion I saw Peach Guitars had the Magenta two switch version I've been looking for. What a great day.
Another fun yet informational episode on a Saturday morning.. Great start to the weekend… thanks TPS..
Gents, that reverb jam was so much fun I was grinning right along! Great video!
“Bend down and turn the time knob”...now there’s a quote for the Dr Who script writers 😀
Fridays are great. Thanks for all of your efforts gentlemen. I put old VCQ's on every single night to fall asleep to. I can never get enough of TPS.
Ah man, they make me fall asleep too.
Just out of curiosity I added up the cost of my board - cutting it very fine for this challenge at £498
Blues driver - £75
Hotcake - £169
Magnetic effects White Atom £90 (Reverb)
Trelicopter - £39
Aqua Puss - £125
That Longbottom custom T brings something out of Dan. Beautiful playing.
👍👍👍👍
Thanks Rowan, yeah, it’s an incredible guitar 🤓🙏
Great episode, thank you, guys! Loved it!
Ah HA! I saw that little Robben Ford nod at 43:22. Such a great video, certainly peaked my interest in the Broadcast! Excellent job as always
Now we need an unlimited budget build, to see what to aspire to... : ) Nice job guys
“Really nice” at 28:09 made me flash back to the days of waking up on the couch to an infomercial.
Dual Broadcast my favourite ever pedal. Crazy that he’s still charging those prices for it given the fact that it’s so stunningly built and it’s been selling out constantly for years!
Absolutely loved this guys. Thank you so much!
The jam at 23:00 is so cool. You two always have the most fun and it's great to see mates having a blast. This one made my day boys. Lovely work as always!
I’ve just been look at that Walrus Audio 87 for my small board! I’ve just picked one up on eBay for £85!!! Thanks Dan you’ve convinced me!! Brilliant episode as always! Welcome to our world of “we got no money honey but we want the best gear!😁”
I love these challenges. I think that is originally what pulled me into the TPS universe in the first place….
It’s great to be able to get a glimpse of how each of you thinks about this stuff, and your priorities when constrained in some way.
Needless to say, stellar job by both!
Now to jump over to the Anderton’s site for some of these tasty morsels…
I just have to say. I fucking love you guys so much. You’ve not only made me a better player but made me find cooler/ more unusual sounds. Thanks a bunch guys!
Ah, cheers bud, love you too 🤓🎸👍
I just sold my Touch 2 last week for £70 posted. Dan could have saved himself another £22 there! 😂
Great show, guys, with some really lovely tones.
Mick you're a bad man... just made a purchase of a J Rockett HRM, I checked it out after you recommended it in this weeks Q&A, and saw Andertons had a bunch on sale so I came back today and grabbed the last one left on sale! I hope those guys at Andertons are giving you a kick back!
This is a great topic, I think most of us watching this show will have boards (or a bedroom carpet!) that have a mix of £50 mini pedals and then the odd £200+ pedal in the style we love most and then build it around those.
That camera work when Mick was playing with the imperials attenuator and Dan was blurred out. The best gear isn’t necessarily on the guitar boards. Lovely stuff.
Fantastic show as always. I can't praise the Trelicopter enough, it's just lovely. My pedal board has been a work in progress over several years, but it's now got everything I need on it, but perhaps not everything I want :)
Watching you two put boards together is like watching Michael Angelo and DaVinci paint. Point final. ✌🏼
This has inspired me to take the afternoon off to just play. I built a Nano+ board this weekend(based around the Origin RevivalTrem) and I need to fire it up. It's great to be the boss. Cheers on another fantastic episode!
The strat into that mesa sounds SO good. Bringing out the Mayer in Mick to my ears
Good fun guys :) - It's nice being a part of the thought proces - I like Dan's board most. Just add a Fuzz next and you're good to go :D
Mick and Dan.
First, a note of thanks. I'd been a acoustic guitar player for years, but had trouble finding new inspiration. I recently began to dabble in electric, when I found your videos and through them I've rediscovered the guitar, and found endless new inspiration. I'm deep down the rabbit hole of guitar pedals, and loving it. Really engages your intellect and your creativity. One of these days when I make it to the UK I'd love to buy you a round (or 3).
Second, putting the Broadcast later in the gain chain is brilliant! I have the broadcast duel, POT, Protein and the Analogman moded OD-9 with bad bob boost (arriving in the coming days), and I've been trying to figure out what to do. I'd always put the Broadcast first as I treated the high gain side as a fuzz and logic was "fuzz goes first." I had been using the EHX Soul Food last as a boost to cut through, but couldn't figure out the middle. Using the broadcast as light gain/boost and fuzz, but running the protein and/or POT before it allows all the pedals to sing, and eliminates the need for the soul food. Genius.
Last, FWIW can you do more Navy tshirts?
Keep doing what you're doing. It's great fun to watch, and I've learned a ton.
Best wishes and many, many thanks.
Yay! Thanks Hugh! More shirts are on the way… we think there are some blues in there. Cheers!
Another great show. Oh my, the broadcast😍.
Love these shows with the more affordable pedals be it new/second hand.
I LOVE stuff like this! Hmmm....for me...all used TC Spark mini $40, JHS Sweet Tea $180, Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus $110, Voodoo Lab Tremolo $100 TC Flashback $70. Don't need much else for me.
These are always fun.
"Start giving it some shoulder." HA!
Dan, that is THE nicest tone I have heard you have on the show yet!
That's what happens when a Flanger hits the drive!
"Turn Tempo" is now the newest TPS trademark. Love it!
Dan sounding very Richard Thompson here..someone's been listening to "I want tee the bright lights tonite" and why the bloody hell wouldn't you???? lol
Nice challenge, both boards sound great but prefer Dan's sound.
$50 Mooer Blues Mood (BD2 Keeley clone)
$80 Ibanez Tube Screamer Mini = $130
$98 Flamma FS22 delay+reverb = $228
$76 Flamma FS05 multi-effect/mod = $304
$97 Joyo XVI poly-octave = $401
$99 Flamma FS01 drum machine+looper = $500
===============
Yep, there's alot of Flamma in there but they make good gear for the money. I'd originally gone with Boss' BD2 but realized I couldn't squeeze in the variety of effects I wanted. Swapping out the BD2($100 used) for the Blues Mood gave me just enough cushion to slot in the FS05 which has a TON of effects and mod options. The Blues Mood (or BD2) sounds great, as does the Tube Screamer but the two of them stacked is just amazing. The FS01 is mainly there for me to fk around with new tunes and I've come to depend on it quite a bit. Joyo's XVI is there just for that drop, it's such a great sound to break into and with a $500 budget, there's no way I could afford Digitech's Whammy5. I own both, prefer the Digitech but the Joyo is great for the price point.
Wow. You dudes always play so well. Love to hear it.
(My kinda boards today :-) ) , I love when you guys play "Red and Blue" , It just feels right when you play them .
Very informative, and enjoyable. Plus 1 for the Hudson Broadcast : )
You guys are lucky to have Hudson Electronics as a local UK company: 165 quid vs. $370 Cdn! Loved the show today- the Neville Longbottom signature tele stole the show! 😄
Cheers Rory, both of my sons have been called Neville at school at one time or another, surfice to say neither of them is called Neville

Totally agree I have kept the same pedals for years : carbon copy, love pedal, looper, and now I add sometimes one because I discover the benefit like the compressor . Thanks guys have a good week end
On my small board I use a 9V brick into 2 isolators sounds great.
Great show guys, love these VS shows!
So happy to see the Echosex Baby. I sing that things praises allll the time on all the social medias where I talk about pedals. Magic to hear Mick play it!
Maybe this could be a topic in the $750 budget episode, but I can’t express how valuable a decent EQ pedal is within ANY rig. It can be such a powerful tool before and after drive sections.
Thanks it's useful for small budget. The Spark was my first pedal years ago, great choices the both of you ;) great sound
All of the sounds Dan was getting were reminding me of 90s Soundgardenesque stuff
Great video chaps, and excellent advice about making any purchases with a long-term view.
For the next installment (~£750?), how about a blind A/B test of the budget boards versus the same overall variety of effects set-up to deliver similar sounds, but on a money-no-object plus switching system set-up? See how close you think you got?
Love the challenges, keep them coming 👏👏👏
Gain sounds for Mick e texture sounds for Dan in that one, both great boards 👌
Would love to see a “mini pedal” pedalboard challenge. See who can get the biggest/most diverse sound using only tiny pedals. Bonus points for throwing out practicality and cramming the pedals onto as small a pedalboard as possible.
It's been a while since I've tuned in - great to listen to you guys while changing strings for an ACTUAL GIG coming up :D
Now that you can have friends round to play, I'm crossing my fingers for a return visit from John Smith - his previous appearance on here changed the way I thought about using pedals for acoustic music, and strongly influenced the way I think about guitar sounds in my folk band!
Did my own 500 CU (currency units) challenge as I watched this. I searched used prices for pedals/power/board I already own and use. Bottom line: 500 even for the pedals (6 pedals, 7 switchable effects), 100 for power, 75 for board&bag. The pedals: mxr Variac fuzz, MojoMojo drive, Keeley Bubbletron, Keeley Verbotrem, Visual Sound H2O v2, Morley Maverick wah. Power: Cioks DC5. Board: Pedaltrain Metro 24. All pedals will fit and power up just fine.
ARP 87 also has a fifth algorithm as a hidden function. Adds tremolo to the repeats. Sounds great and once you get the feel for it you can use it in a really groovy way
These are the best videos!!
