  • Flanger has always been my least favorite effect on harp -- so much that I haven't featured one on the channel in over two years. I got my hands on every flanger I could to find what I could possibly like about flangers and how to use out-of-the-box flanging techniques in a practical context. I was really surprised, and found some of my new favorite pedals in the process.
The real flangers were the friends we made along the way

and chorus has vibrato in it,

@@logrinn wow man, thanks for that. Many people just make comments without backing up their opinions with evidence. This is great.
I still like a subtle chorus a bit more. Flanger often has this "hollowness" (to me) when set as chorus-like sounds. Some choruses do that as well. I am mostly a fan and user of reverbs and delays mostly, and love using modulation within those effects, again, very subtly.

    • @logrinn

@@MatthewSwasta I agree about the hollowness. There is a slightly different character to flanger compared to chorus. This flanger toneprint is a favourite of mine though.

The one big omission for me and one I'd love to hear on Harp is the Electric Mistress. It's more Chorus-like than most Flangers, or at least can be used in place of one. I'm also in the position where I wasn't super into the airplane noises, but I fell in love with the Mistress. I had a Stereo Mistress - digital pedal with Chorus and Flanger, then the big Big Box Deluxe, and now I use a little Mooer Eleclady.
Another type of Flanger that's kind of interesting is a Hi-Band flanger - I owned the Boss HF-2 for a while, it was a really nice tastey purplish pink and I kind of miss it for that reason. One of the pedals you demo'd probably has it as an option though - I'm not sure I'd keep one around as a dedicated pedal.

    • @CantStopScreaming
      @CantStopScreaming Год назад +1

Agreed! The Electric Mistress can be a little noisy, but between the two modes you can find some pretty amazing sounds. There's a guy in eastern Europe who makes an exact copy of the original that he calls the Roxanne and I got one... it's pretty awesome, and cheaper than an original :)

    • @n.s.3812

Electric mistress has always been my go-to. It’s used by so many guitarists and on so many rock songs that I’ve never considered flanger to be an under-utilized effect. David Gilmour, for instance, has flanger (e-mistress) on a ton of his solos.
The Mooer e-lady/elec-lady is a really good inexpensive clone for anyone looking.
Other than that, I use my Strymon v2 deco - probably my favorite, (almost) always-on pedal now, which has a great flanger built in (only engaged when pedal is depressed, though, which has pros and cons)

Adjusting the rate from a Chromatic module, or modular synth used for a lead line to give some wobble to the rate of the near Barberpole Flange effect the Komorebi can do, perhaps. Chiptune drums run through the Komorebi and use the LFO out to modulate the Treminator, or any other effect that can be modulated for a harp effects chain.

As someone who comes from more of an in-the-box perspective, I disliked flangers for a lot of years, because I was a little too indoctrinated by the echo chamber of music production communities and tutorials all emphasizing very hard on why so-called "flanging artefacts" are not good. ofc the arguments are valid. you wouldn't want a really important sound to have flanging artefacts in mono, when sounding totally cool in stereo, because of the haas effect, if your music could be played on a mono soundsystem. but when you focus too much on such technical aspects and details of sound creation you can lose track of the beauty of those artefacts and the very effects that create them on purpose, in which case they are not called "artefacts" anymore. I had to listen to Witthüser & Westrupp and Tame Impala to realize that flangers, despite being really simple effects, are actually some of the most awesome ones in existence. Flangers are basically feedback vibratos after all. They are the lofiness of fractals, or the vibe of the recursion.

I learned about flanging as a DJ when you play two of the same record at the same time and same place, but you ever so slightly increase and decrease the speed of one of them. In music production, I produce the flange effect the same way. I duplicate a track, midi or audio, and I start one of the tracks about 0.5 after the other track. To get the full flange effect, I can move portions of one of the tracks slowly, back and forth 0.0 +/- 0.5. It's the 'natural' way to flange and is better than the electronic plugins effect, in my opinion.

I've got a flanger pedal by Morley. It's built up like a wha-wha. When you press the pedal it effects the rate of the flanger. So you can create nice vibes in real time messing up with the rate of the effect. I think it's from the late 70's or early 80's

just back fromguitar summit. the ehx sucks. the walrus was ok… hx stomp model, ok to meh…but they sound NOTHING like my ginormus 81deluxe mistress. its always fat, warm. very hard to get nasty or metallic. its like a chorus on steroids. or a leslie. maybe smthgs broken.

I love that I don't really know anything about pedals but here I am, listening to whatever Emily show me so maybe, one day, I might start playing an electric didgeridoo with a lot of reverb pedals. That might be cool

I love flanger but I never set it too “strong” which is when it sound like shit 😅. I set it almost always like you would set a phaser (that effect would also sound like shit if you set it too wet)

One excellent flanger not mentioned is the Polychrome by Walrus Audio. It has a wide variety of parameters that can be very customizable. It doesn't have randomized waveforms, but still worth checking out!

Great video! But even wit your excellent uses and exploration, I can confirm I dislike flangers quite a lot and far prefer other filter movement. There's just something about the movement of a flanger that I find just...unappealing. I'm glad others like it, but it's just not for me. Thanks for the exploration!

I like using flanger end of chain as a subtle movement/contour. Polymoon or Deco are what I like. However I’m now curious about Pyramids or some sort of analog flanger…. Stereo electric mistress maybe?

My 1983 Ibanez FL9 Flanger is the second pedal I've ever owned...it still works! I also have an Original 1977/78 MXR M117 Flanger(in my JHS Board) and a tc electronic Vortex. I use a Boss BF-3 in my Bass Board. I can get nearly every sound I need out of 'em.
