Reacting to someone saying "no, don't do your art like that" by doubling down and doing it twice as hard is the essence of the artistic soul.
This kind of thinking is the reason why I became a serial killer instead of remorsing my first offense
@@dlog theres always that weird person huh?
@@samuraibeluga3749 yeah sorry there's actually a quota of at least one weird person MUST comment on a video or else the equilibrium will notch to an unstable position

@1:32 souns really organic
As a fan of synths and fun synth sounds, the entire second half of this video was magical. Really fun seeing things being done like this with instruments you wouldn't typically expect.
Thanks so much!
Emily, I am a harpist for almost 17 years now, and you are pushing the harp to new expressions and new sounds - and I'm lovin' it! Keep on doing your pedal magic!
thank you so much, Kevin!!! that means the world to me coming from you!! I really appreciate you being here with us, and thank you for your kind words! you made my day today 🥰❤
My favorite example is Zappa. At a live show the crowd started shouting “shut up and play yer guitar!” Ironically he came out with his “shut up and play your guitar” album which had no singing. The album is basically one long guitar solo lol… and I LOVE IT
for me, it was the Darkstar-Telegraph/ I want to try some stuff with that and polyphase something on the other side.
I love Emily’s response!
When the fart pedal combo were played my dog quietly got up and walked to the back door to be let out. 😂
HAHAHA please tell your dog I love them!! ❤😂
Your dog might have been one of the commenters they're responding to
@@caseco4979 Actually my dog showed the trolls that negativity is no response to creativity. She may not appreciate what a fart pedal can give to the harp but she acknowledges that others do. 😄
@@samday6621 here was me assuming that dog just didn't want to be blamed for all the flatulence .
@@fionnagrant6636 ….or she was escaping mine…
We may never know.
No instrument is sacred. There is a time and place for tradition, but no current instrument or genre of music would exist without the trailblazers that came before. Love what you're doing with harp, keep it up!
thank you so much!!! 🥰❤
I'm sure Antonio Stradivari wouldn't care that someone was shredding some bluegrass on one of his instruments but I'm sure there is some uptight c*%t out there that would object.
the fact that there's a mongolian metal band that uses electric erhus and a throat-singing vocalist reminds me that even though the political world seems to be more inundated every day by xenophobic idiots trying to insularize the planet back to the dark ages, there are musicians everywhere who, on the contrary, grok what it's *all* about
It reminds me of people who get indignant if your synthesizer isn't analog. They act as if digital synths are blasphemy, which is just so illogical.
@@SuperChaoticus its a damn shame they think that way because some of the best synthesizers in my opinion combine digital and analog synthesis in wonderful ways.
The irony is that harps of that type wouldn't exist without pushing some boundaries. Journeying into what is possible is part of being an artist, not just a musician.
I have so much respect for the way that you not only doubled down on your position, but instead of dismissing the haters, you instead channeled them towards another musician/creative as something they may be more likely to enjoy. Also, I have to say, the music you played at the at the 4:16 mark was gorgeous and blew me away...
thank you so much!! I really, really appreciate that! 🥰❤ so glad you enjoyed it!!
@@emilyharpist yup, this was the one that got me to sub
The parallel sound of the reverse + bitmap + skylar + artificial blonde was amazing.
Totally a inter dimensional love song.
gotta agree. just, wow.
We learned that when you question an artist, they'll probably use that as fuel to take an idea further.

Don't let 'em drag you down! You are extending the possibilities of the harp. The traditional harp is not going to disappear. You have opened the door to a larger space! I play viola and your work is very inspiring to me; I bet many who play other instruments watch your channel. Cheers!❤
I play drums, and as much fun as an acoustic kit is, edrums have come a long ways and provides me a way to break from the same old style, it's so inspiring to see others use similar things to on their instruments and push the limits.
The banana pedal plus dark star mix with the four pedals all melded together with the duophony and added stereo width was mind blowing. It started at 3:02
This 100%!!!!!
I love that mix so much! I could just close my eyes and drift off into space listening to that
thank you so much!!! I really appreciate that; I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!! 🥰❤
I literally was going to make this same comment. He'll ye'ah😎🙌💖
seriously!
This video is such a revelation to me. Never knew harps were such a versatile instrument. Never knew they could produce these sounds. All of this is amazing.
Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel :)
If ego death had a sound, this would be it. Absolutely amazing work as always, y'all.

Phoenix!!!! thank you so much for your support!!! 🥺❤ (I wanna make the sausage keyring a real thing, too!!! lmfao)
Here's the thing I love the most out of using pedals to turn the harp into a synth: sympathetic resonance. The way that the harp strings resonate into the wood and the wood transfers a subtle resonation into the other strings creates a very full and lush sound. It's part of why the harp sounds the way it does, but it's not something we normally perceive much.
But when effects pedals pick up all those other subtle resonances and amplify them, you get a sound that is so much bigger than just the notes played. That's something that most synths could never pull off, at least not organically. Amazing sound.
At this point I can't tell if Em going "METAMORPHOSIS huh Russ" while wearing butterfly earrings is cosmic irony or them just messing with us
Harp through pedals is great! And this channel's also a great example of how whatever instrument you play, you can use a bit of tech to make all kinds of cool sounds and interesting music. It's not just for guitarists and keyboard players, and playing a classical instrument doesn't mean you need to put yourself in a box. Also you can hit the box with a mic and turn that into music too!
lmaoooo Gregor Samsa is my favorite, I thought it was very deep of Russ to say that 🪲😂 SUCH A JOURNEY!!!
seriously, thank you so much for the kind words hahah we're so glad you're here with us!! 🥰❤ YES I feel like you can make music with anything, even sampling Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" and adding a beat behind it (... maybe we should try this....)
@@emilyharpist honestly one of my fav things is giving someone who can't play a guitar and some kind of effects (delay is great too, for the layering) and letting them just create and explore without needing to know what they're doing - when even just scratching the strings or tapping the body makes a cool sound, people really get into experimenting!
Maybe Russ could do a live Kafka reading while you produce a soundtrack too! Maybe hearing a harp make cockroach sounds is all the purists need to be converted
Have no idea how I ended up here. I can't carry a tune, can't play a thing, can't differentiate instruments when listening to music but happy I got here. The way Emily reacts to haters or silly criticisms is one of the most heartwarming things I have seen on social media and years. Not kidding, she may "just" be a harpist exploring but she really is a role model on how to communicate with people who are set on not liking what you do.
Thanks Emily!
I really like the blend that is happening around the 7 minute mark. I'd love to hear a whole song that uses that set up.
Thanks so much! The full track of that is on bandcamp in my bio! Coming soon to streaming services!
Don't change what you are doing. It is hated because you do it so well and make amazing ethereal and out of this world beautiful sounds.
It's amazing, you managed to recreate the sound of my hangover after my last trip to Japan
The latter half of this video genuinely has some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard.
"Dont try anything new! New is scary!" Great stuff guys. I think what you're doing is incredible. Keep it up! Cheers!!!
hahah thank you so much, Cam!! ❤🥰 we really appreciate you!!
Sounds amazing, like something from a really atmospheric scifi movie. People get too hung up on what they think an instrument should sound like, but they forget that it's art. Trying new things and figuring out what's cool and sounds good is half the fun.
Personally, I think your stuff sounds amazing. This segment especially has a very Vangelis vibe to it that I really dig. Thanks for what you do!
thank you so much!!! thanks for being here with us today, I really appreciate the kind words! 🥺❤
I don't know why people wouldn't like your music. It's becoming more and more difficult to truly have unique music, and your music is very much unique.
I really enjoy the random funky effects you use. It's the whole reason I subscribed, I'm sure I'm not the only one. Keep "ruining" the harp and we'll be here!
hahah thank you so much being here with us!! 🥰❤ I feel like we should all get buttons or pins that say "ruining harps club" or something 😂

3:02 - 3:30 genuinely gave me goosebumps.
thank you so much for listening!! :) ❤ glad you enjoyed it!
Same. 😌👌✨
Me too.
Yes, that was truly gorgeous
Glorious stuff! I’m reminded of Brian Eno’s collaborations with Harold Budd (Ambient 2 and The Pearl), where Eno treats Budd’s pianos with all sorts of fx from delays and chorus through to shimmer reverb, which Eno was pretty much inventing at the time through creative patching. The beauty of the piano is still there, but transformed in all sorts of beautiful ways to add layers to the improvisation. Pianos are amazing but not sacrosanct; and the same applies to harps.
I love the dynamic between you two.
Russ is like: IT'S A METAMORPHASIS! 🤓
and Emily is like: it's like some sounds from a box 😒

"DONT MAKE FUN OF ME💔💔💔"
I was going to write some kind of thoughtful comment, but you two verbalized anything I would've said anyway, so I'm just going to say that the Placebo pedal joke was damn brilliant.
I can't understand it... With the vast expanse of things on youtube, there are people who are going out of their way to pass comments on things that they can choose to... just.. not.. watch..
Please don't stop playing about with music in the weird and wonderful ways that you do
I know you are having fun. It's too bad that some people can't understand that. I really enjoy these vids.
That duophony pedal is crazy awesome 🤯 great playing and extremely hilarious content. I was cracking up 😂

Thank you this was great. Have a high end sound system from a friend who passed and this was a journey into a harp for me. Thanks again
Absolutely killer content! I love the confluence of sounds around 3:15. Brilliant!

I need like a 1 hour track of just those harp sounds. It's so relaxing and beautiful.
3:03 and 4:20 are both so dope. You should make an ambient album of songs like this!
Just stumbled upon your channel while looking at pedals. I went on a journey listening to you play. Gonna share this channel with my other musician friends. Thank you for sharing all of this.
I, for one, welcome the new harp overlords, affecting the pure, pristine tones of the harp with a plethora of pedal effects.
That Duophony is a pretty sweet piece of gear 🤘
You're videos have encouraged me to get an Amp and start trying some pedals for myself. I'm so excited to find some new ways to enjoy making music. :)
Really dope, my synth brain wants to use it to blend and morph between multiple sound sources receiving the same midi....
YESSSS please try it!!! 😈🔥
😳🤯 Whoa! This would be heckin' epic
The last mix gives me Never ending story meets final fantasy feels. Loving the channel! Keep on arting your heart out!
The soundscape coming out of these pedals remind me of Disasterpeace's work on Hyper Light Drifter, sounds otherworldly and haunting and I love what sounds you can get out of your setup
you nail it. best example in what the douphony does very clear thanks
"Think it over" sent me, that's amazing. I can't help but... Love? (Fear? Respect?) someone that's so completely up themselves they can tell someone that's done 5000 youtube videos that she really just needs to sit and *think it over*.
lmaooo I know, that really got me good ❤😂 so condescending!!
Also when I do my scores I love treating my analogue synrhs, guitars, vocals, whatveer. I don't understand how people are against experimental processing and warping sound. It's pretty much my Style. I had a hammer dulcimer player on my last feature film length score (film is called Senseless, by TrashArts,) and we sampled every string in pairs using two ebows to create harmonic resonance. There's no sound like it. We still used normal hammer dulcimer at time for arpeggios, glissando, rakes etc, but I made huge orchestral chord extensions like C11+13 made entirely out of drones and then doubled it with synth. In another scene I went a little further and had each arpeggio from the hammer dulcimer doubled as an echo with Om27 Omnichord, and then Ebowed dulcimer drones for each note of each chord following it all in this ethereal spread.
So I got the best of both worlds on that score. On my newest score The Pocket Film Of Superstitions, I've sampled segments of the string section I recorded in France and made a whole new piece from them using modulated delays and reverbs from Eventide to expand the stereo spread and trace individual harmonics etc from the original sound source.
Again to me at least, there's nothing wrong with warping the sound and making something else. It changes mood and atmosphere. I love your channel keep experimenting ❤️
3:03 is pure magic 🥰 could listen on forever
thank you so much!! 🥰❤
I do not grasp why people can't imagine liking the natural acoustic sound of the harp AND the harp through pedals at the same time. I mean, if I say I like green curry, I'm not saying I hate chocolate cake, am I? It's like people can't love something without hating something else -- to them, love is the icky brussels sprouts they will only eat if they get some yummy hate brownies afterwards or something. 😮💨
Sometimes when I watch human behavior, I feel like Jane Goodall.
And it would be a strange individual that would go to the curry restaurant and complain that they serve chocolate cake.
Maybe they live somewhere that has a law that forces them to watch whatever the youtube algorithm comes up with with no skipping. That must be it.
Some real beautiful sounds there.
They all sound fantastic, especially that last combo.
thank you so much!! 🥰❤

Thank you so much for watching, Michael!! 🥰❤️
@@emilyharpist The harp is practically a vertical keyboard and has all the potential of being an alternative keyboard. My dream is to have a harp where the strings are just midi controller that can play whatever sound you desire. Laser Harps are very close to that.

So many interesting pedals and combinations, I think I'd spend a couple of years just playing with all that, really digging those synthesis sounds. Exploring the sound leads to great art, as proven by the likes of Vangelis, J.M. Jarre, Brian Eno, and other greats
Wow! The effects on outro playing was stellar, sounded like Vangelis Blade Runner soundtrack! Guitar pedals on harp is so extreme that some people can’t deal & lose out. Momma always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun!

The work you and Russ have been doing is priceless. First and foremost for allowing a lot of viewers to get acquainted with the Harp, which is simply NOT a very accessible instrument (and I only remember ever listening to it through Andreas Vollenweider and some classical pieces). Second, the knowledge you guys have and provide about pedals is immense, bar none. There will always be haters - and most likely, envious people. I, for one, am very thankful for your knowledge and humor.

The Miku Fart was an auditory nightmare, but I definitely couldn't tell it was a harp! 5/5
The other pedal combinations were much more pleasing to hear. Solid 5/7 for them.
I still don't *get* the shock people have with the sound signal. The harp isn't *physically* making these final sounds. The acoustic quality isn't impeded. This is as scandalous as a composer in the 90s using a midi harp in a Gameboy game, or a film distorting a recording for an effect. It's taking a signal that is already dry and adding different textures and colors purposefully (or experimentally) to create a different sound. It's common! And the harp is still making its characteristic sound!
Would you say the Miku Fart combination was... Kafkaesque?
This is a 10/10 comment, Matt.
