- The other day I posted a RUclips poll asking what instrument you play (if any), and 70% of the people who answered said GUITAR/BASS. So, in honor of that, I wanted to play a guitar myself. I just have to say... I have SO much respect for you guitarists. This instrument doesn't make any sense.

That is how I picked my epiphone dot.. I could of supported my local guitar shop but wanted the aquamarine one and they didn't have one so I got it second hand online. Next guitar will be a P90 equipped guitar maybe a tv yellow Les Paul Special and because my friend is employed by Gibson at MesaBoogie I will have him get it for me for 50% off because they get a ridiculous employee discount.

I once talked to a harpist wo built his lever harp with an extra thin soundboard to achieve a whammy bar effect when pressing it, but of course this only works for bending upwards.
I wonder if you could build a harp with the.. the big vertical stick?... made out of a car or motorbike suspension and some kind of huge lever that can compress it to slacken the strings...
With 20+ years of experience working next to a guitar shop, I can confirm that this guitar review is on point.

As a drummer, lemme give you a brief yet professional introduction to how a guitar works.
Stringy long things go Brrrr twang twang. Pedal on floor make it do CHUGGA MESHUGGAH DUGGA . Eerm what else. Twisty end headstock bits do something probably. Make sure to tune up whenever the lead singer is talking. There are some twisty dials and a flicky lever for when you get bored. Big square box makes loud noises aaand then just wait for the ladies to line up after the show. Boom.

The worrying about this is, that that's pretty accurate to how most guitarists I know (me included) would describe a drum set... little changes in terminology here and there, change "stringy things" to "golden plate things", and "tune while the singer talks" to "hit and kick all of those, when the guitar (or bass) is tuning" but all in all pretty close. Whats bad about this is, I think you were kidding, we are just kida ignorant, I guess :/

Thanks, a very informative and solid review. Some highlights, in time order:
- Flexing your knowledge of guitar companies, such as Les Paul, Fender, Humbucker and Square.
- Nuts: there's six of them. But, most importantly, are they solid? Yes.
- Doesn't fall into the pickguard gotcha question. Good. That's where you can tell an amateur reviewer from a pro.
- TIGHT ACTION. Ok.
- RIP beloved tuner.
- The guitar strap should always be approached with some fear, care and respect. Unlike the tuner (see above).
- Let's check again the nuts. Are they still solid? Yes.

To be honest I’ve been playing guitar for over 10 years and had never heard the term nut until this video. I always just called the nut the neck bridge
Guitar words make no sense. Like when the guy handed her what's commonly called a "tremolo arm", which does not have anything to do with tremolo.

michacha: i started out on bass, certain chords on guitar are similar to bass,
but that's where the similarities end. bass is more about harmony and finding a rhythm, bass is actually easier to start than guitar,
but they say is the most difficult to master.
the only hard parts about guitar, are some of the stuff you see in Jazz or Country.
rock and metal are pretty straightforward, but playing lightning fast not everyone can do. i can play, but im nowhere near as good as those those big guitar channels.

I've only played guitar, but i definitely see how bass is harder to master, though it's a lot easier to start than on guitar - calluses are about as hard to build i'd figure, but the style of play is way different
And about the jazz, i agree as well, it's absolutely no biggie learning some easy shapes and linking up two hands, now deliberately creating and understanding other chords that are more intricate than your 7th chords or something like that - that's a lot harder than you'd think. I recently learned a little tune which is just 4 chords, but figuring out how to play each of them and then bending your fingers to correctly play them in tempo took some time
40 year guitar dork here; I love this. I bought a violin on a whim a few years ago thinking "I play guitar, how hard can it be?" It's pretty hard...
Tell me about it! Same here. At least it was a less painful experience than my cousin, who having never swam before, decided "how hard can it be?" and jumped in at the deep end. Fortunately my dad pulled him out promptly, but he said it was the longest 30 seconds of his life.
Yeeeeah hammering on does not work at all with violin like it does guitar lol violin is so much more delicate

Emily, your guesses as to the names of things was perfectly reasonable. There's honestly no logic behind them as far as I can tell, and I've been playing and working on guitars for like 35 years.
Also, the color, which *is* the most important part, is spot on!

oh thank god hahah that gives me hope!! I really want to learn how to play -- I grew up on Rockabilly music (my dad was a huge influence) and that ONE blues lick has lived in my brain for over 15+ years 😂
@@emilyharpist There's no questioning your already existing musicality, ear for sound, sense of rhythm and more so you've already got all the attributes to smash it on guitar. Why not start with some old Rockabilly licks? You've definitely got the pedals to give you that classic slapback sound

Electric guitars are weird to someone who isn't familiar with them, but they're just fun things to mess around on. You don't have to do things the way anyone else does them, and I'm assuming you still have your Telecaster as well, so you can compare the two and hear the differences between them. I use my guitar the way some people do knitting or whittling or something - it's therapeutic. I don't play anything that could be considered listenable or even musical, it's just sound I can make and listen to through headphones. If you don't even worry about the conventional aspects of what part is what and just spend time playing around with them, they're extremely enjoyable things to have lying around your house.
Yes!! The Telecaster is Russ’s guitar but now I have MY OWN 🔥 it’s definitely therapeutic and I can’t wait to learn how to play it better - I just can’t believe how bad the guitar strings hurt my fingers 🥺 even on my worst days with hours of practice on harp, I build up callouses, but these guitar strings have like a “BITE” to them if that makes sense?
@@emilyharpist it could be the string winding (it's like a wire wrapped around a core, the thinner strings are just the core) which is kinda like little teeth! You also just might want to put some fresh ones on there, they could be a little degraded and scratchy since they came on the guitar, but Russ could probably tell you if they're good or not
Do the harp calluses happen in a different place? I'm guessing you play more with the pads of your fingers than the actual tips? I've never touched a harp :( but I'm thinking like playing a bass, but a very big one
@@cactustactics YES the calluses usually happen on the pads of your fingers, the trick about playing harp and what harp teachers commonly say is that "you want as much flesh on the string as possible" to get good tone, so I think it's in a bit of a different spot than guitar calluses which are closer to the fingertips
I think this is a healthy opinion on electric guitars, even if you know how it works and how to play. This is why people like george harrison, david gilmour or jimi hendrinx are remembered quite fondly. Thats the spirit that took this instrument from being just a louder guitar to the center piece of most music for decades. :)
And regarding the strings, I guess those wich came with that just guitar aren’t that nice. There are quiet big differences, maybe try some elixir (my personal favourite) or ernie balls. Or try around with gauges. The thinner the less pressure is needed. And it doesn’t take thaaaat long for your finger tips to get used to it
@@emilyharpist Yeah guitar calluses tend to be more like on the ends of your fingers - and the advice there is to use the tips of your fingers so there's minimal contact, so the opposite of harp! Gotta keep them out of the way of the other strings
You'll get used to it though! You're probably pressing harder than you need to as well, you'll get more comfortable with it
I've got flatwound strings on a bass - they're like the rounds but the winding is flat instead of bumpy, which is supposed to make them feel more comfortable. And they are, but oh god THE FRICTION. Turns out when your finger's in contact with the entire surface it's a little bit grippy when you're sliding

@@emilyharpist Bjork's harp player used a whammy bar and an ebow. (I think?) It's on the last song of the live at the royal opera house performance if you search for it.
@@emilyharpist First time I saw a pedal harp I thought "they must work like a whammy, you unfix them, go up and down and they let you bend". Turned out quite a bit more benign, but you probably could kinda do it like that, you'll get a bunch of stuff between a natural and a flat for example. You could create a mechanism that more aggressively turns some strings up and down, especially down. Kinda imagine divebombing on a harp with a pedal. Would be cool.

I love the polytune. Before buying the polytune I would tune once a year, a few days before the equinox. Now I tune ALL the time. Before I warm up, after I warm up, during the bridge, during the solo, it really doesn't matter. Think you're playing a Gminor? Think again. That fifth is a microtone flat my guy. Amaj? More like, A MAJOR problem with your intonation. My friends don't talk to me any more, but who needs company when you have perfect pitch?

I knew this was going to be fantastic from the moment you started opening the side of the box that didn't have tape on it. I get the feeling though, that you'd be playing pretty decent guitar after not a lot of time. This video was adorable and I loved it!

As a Cello player I can tell it's very weird when you first get a guitar after playing a different instrument for so long. Emily looks so happy she's radiant, so adorable.

I'm trying to think how you could do this like. You could have ridiculously expanded range lever or harp mechanisms all connected to some kind of big chord that pulls on them at once. Or like somehow design the half the harp to just be floating like a Jazzmaster frem. Absolute mad science.

@@emilyharpist as a friend of guitarists they seem to think having developed thick skin develop on your finger tips be a good thing ( like you can get from shoes kinda?)
I get callouses on my fourth fingers and thumbs from the harp, but they go away after a while and they’re never that severe. I feel like with guitar they’re gonna be there for the rest of your life 😂
