Classic Character Delay & Echo Sounds For Guitar: Which Would You Choose? - That Pedal Show
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 окт 2020
- We explore classic ‘character’ delay types including Echoplex & Space Echo (tape), Echorec (drum), Memory Man (analogue) and oil can types: which is your favourite?
Life too short for long RUclips videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! You could definitely say that Dan and I are big fans of ‘character’ delay sounds. From the behemoth Binson Echorec T7E to Roland Space Echoes, the Maestro Echoplex and more, we have done many a deep dive on these cornerstones of guitar echo tones (please check out our Delay & Reverb playlist in this channel).
What we haven’t done however is a more entry-level/overview-type comparison video to give newcomers a basic idea of the key schools of character delay… erm, until now.
In this episode we leave out the vintage esoterica and ultra-boutique unobtanium and instead assemble our faves in the current character delay pedal world in order to inspire you towards some more inspiration and fun with the humble echo pedal.
Do we need to repeat that? Yes - endlessly!
Enjoy the episode…

The example of how the bucket brigage is better for staying out of the way due to the absence of transients is a great example of how this show helps people have words for things they intuitively get, but lack the vernacular and discrete comprehension.
Ha! It’s an ongoing process of learning for us to! We’re privileged to be able to share it with you - thanks for being with us!
excuse me.....(insert troll)....to is spelled with 2 o's. Great vid as always. learning a lot about delay currently so much appreciated in Dallas TX!
You’re doing the right thing man. Just keep digging in and see what you can learn. The only thing I would offer is this...: I would start off with a more “ basic” delay pedal. Like a Boss or something. Just because that will really give you an idea of exactly what you like and what you don’t like and it will be relatively easy to learn. Than you could decide if you want more or what. Some pedals just have a huge learning curve is what I’m trying to say. Sometimes you just want to get in there and start making music instead of memorizing a huge manual. I always used Boss as a “guidepost”. They always sound great and you will definitely know if you like delay or not. If you do, you can keep it as they are tried and true or you can go ahead and get one of the expensive “ do it all” delay pedals if you want to dive that deep. These guys have done some really great shows dedicated to just that!!
Geez, the op should get in the writers room of TPS. That was very articulate. I read a shit ton, and write comments often but find myself at a loss of words sometimes.
I don't know man... judging by that comment, you seem to have a pretty good vocabulary. There were quite a few 3 and 4 syllable words in there. That's a lot for a guitar player. 😄
Until Mick or Dan get the timings up.

@@ThatPedalShow I see what you did there with the echoing replies...
@@ThatPedalShow No apology necessary at all. The videos are always so enjoyable that I watch every minute, but I know that some people are impatient and so it was just for them to help keep the views up, rather than a pointed "ooh you forgot" thing.
(the intro was hilarious btw)
@@ThatPedalShowthat’s a pristine repeat right there
I WAS JUST SEARCHING FOR, MY FIRST DELAY PEDAL! I'm a classical violinist, during Lockdown i bought a Ibanez Tele and a Tweed blues junior because I love guitar. Thanks for giving all of this to us for free!
Welcome to the club! 👍
Congratulations! Welcome :)
Thanks guys!
You are in for a treat!
I'm a violinist too! TPS is very inspiring. Without them I'd never have found the pedals I'm so happy with.
Analog 11:05, 12:48
Echo 21:34
Tape 26:14
Oil can 42:29
Stereo 47:17
These comedy intros are just too good, keep um coming guys.
I thought I opened this video in two separate tabs at the same time.
How many takes were needed, I wonder?
The best character delay is Dr. Jones Snr. from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
It's maybe 45-50min before they give you Connery.
Blade Runner 2049 beats that as Harrison Ford doesn't turn up until about an hour & three quartrers into the film. I'm undeceided as to which is the better film.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I don't even agree with this (because the referenced film is WILDLY overrated), but I gave you a thumbs up anyway, because it was hilarious.
Delay is the human experience, man created digital delay to replicate analog, we as carbon based entities, like analog delay grow ,swell and decay, but it's rich ,warm , and glorious, ,i hope everyone has a great and analog saturated weekend
That's not exactly so. I absolutely love real analog delay, but from the point of veiw of engineers of their day analog delay had shortcomings. It wasn't until after digital technology was implemented that the users felt it to be somewhat sterile and began to miss the sound of the old tech. It's a similar thing with valve amps. It's the imperfections that impart a human kind of beauty to the creation and reproduction of the music.
One of my jobs as a roadie for my cousin's band in the mid 70's (in addition to lugging a full Marshall stack, an SVT, and a B3 with a Leslie!) was to manipulate the slider on the Echoplex at the end of "Suffragette City" so that we got "Suffragette!- gette! gette! gette!". I would then push it into oscillation. Freaky!
YES!
Man you really are Jesus aren’t you
YESSSSS! I'm 5 minutes in and it's already one of my favorite episodes. Never enough delays!
Thank you! Been playing over 45 years, own a few delays and now have a better understanding!
Fantastic episode - thank you so much! Can’t wait for part #2 regarding the TimeLine.
Well executed guys!! Learned a new term “character delay”. I have a Catalinbread echorec and Analogman delay based on previous vids. Thanks for producing such great content
Mick, whenever you talk about delay it takes me straight back to the Birmingham guitar show this year when you said something like "I never really used delay, then I met Dan and all this s$!t happened". I never used that many pedals, then started watching you guys and the rest they say is history! Great show guys, top work as always!
Ha! We’re all in the same boat it seems. :0)
I love the different elements you both bring to the effects by the different playing styles you have!
I needed this roundup. I'm still on my delay discovery journey, even though I've been watching TPS for 5 years.
Been watching TPS for years now and I don't get tired of hearing y'all regurgitate the same information from videos past. Keep educating and helping musicians! HAVE SCHWANG!
Thanks as ever guys. For me, modulated delays (and reverbs too) are just the best. Spent many an hour lost in that ambient space!
So this episode was supposed to help me decide which delay is right for me. I used to think I knew which delay was right for me. Now I need all of them.
Job done on our part, we’d say. :0)
I use the Seymour Duncan Vapor Trail Analog delay. I absolutely love it. The sounds produced with this engaged on my board are out of this world.
As far as I can tell, this is the first episode to feature the G3 =) awesome video, guys! I myself have been using way way way more delay in these years watching you. And I love it =D thanks!
I absolutely LOVE the oil can sound. When you guys did a delay roundup ages ago I fell for the Old Blood Noise Black Fountain after much comparison with the Adineko, not only for the sound but the graphics as well. Paired with my trusty old DD-3 which I've had since the early '90s I can get more sounds than I have time to explore.
Thanks for your exploration and inspiration.
That oil can is chorus shimmer vibrato and delay all rolled into one. My favourite of all!
Oil this can goofball 🖕🏽😆🖕🏽
You guys are a couple of characters on delay - great episode and really helpful to think about all the different types of delays and what they mean.
Thanks, guys. I just bought Echorec because of what I've learned from you. I'm enjoying it so much
I LOVE when you guys geek out on delays!!!!!! ...... and it’s posted on my birthday!!! Best gift, aside from a new delay pedal.
Happy birthday Rob!
Love to see the Adineko here! It's my go-to delay & the first delay to really "click" with me--something about the combination of the subtle vibrato, the springy trails, and especially the ability to blend long/short head repeats for a lot of rhythmic variation.
Awesome episode, and learned a lot. I'm so addicted to the swell of the Boonar I can hardly bring myself to play without it now. I run it with the tone all the down so that it further "sits in the back". I realize after watching this that by doing this I'm de-emphasizing the transient on the repeats (which can be very "peaky" on a drum echo).
I never got into delay until 2003 when I bought an epiphone special, I had a Marshall silver jubilee for my les Paul until then, anyway it had digital reverb and lo and behold digital delay, the second of the three settings was just long enough for me to hear and respond back to my playing , like staring into a mirror, and man , I just played with myself endlessly, I still do
Loved this show. Great playing Dan
yes chaps you have finally done the show I've been waiting for thanks again
Love my Boss RE 20 and DD 3. Also the glitch sounds you can out of the DD3 are insane! Great example of clean digital delays getting crazy
Great show, Thanks! My present delay setup is a TRex Replicator Jr and a TC Flashback2 with a tap tempo pedal. Set up with the FB2 on dotted eights, cascading into the RJr, with the Tap tempo pedal close to the RJr tap tempo footswitch, so I can tap both at once. Getting a kind of fake multi head effect on the RJr. As the icing on the cake I have a vibrato pedal (EQD Aqueduct) further up the signal chain, so the vibrato into the delays creates a chorus feel. Love it!
I’m a delay junkie. At this moment, I have a Strymon DiG and JHS Panther. Digital and analog, sound amazing and most importantly, eeeeeaaassy to dial in. As a middle aged guy, I’m unable to read instructions (or maps, or ask for directions)...so ease of use is paramount.
Hahaha!!!
DIG is pretty deep (no put intended) though, if you want to get into it, especially with the secondary functions. Love my DIG!
The Panther Cub!!! What a wonderful Delay. It certainly has some Character to it I really like it :o)
Also went for the DIG, so many options besides being able to do pristine clear
Shout out for the TC Electronic Flashback II. I have loaded in TonePrints for a Buffered Space Echo, TCE Space Echo, and the Binson Echorec which all sound amazing. With TonePrint and all of it's factory settings for 2290, Analog, Tape Delay, etc., that one pedal can do so much! Plus, I use it's Looper. It's a great first and maybe last delay pedal.
Most epic intro ever! Hahah
Enjoyed this so much. I really want an oil can style delay for so long
Nothing more comforting that a warm night in with TPS❤️
The oil can has so much character, I’m really impressed.
I had to get the Adineko. It's certainly worthy of the hype. Want reel fun? Put their ZeroPoint flanger after it. Mind blowing.
What’s the price point?
Ry Cooder!
I love learning from your videos, I had never even heard about the oil can delay before. Very cool, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience about all these wonderful delays. The drum delay sounded wicked!
You've certainly given me food for thought about which type of delay I'd want for different circumstances and dfferent guitars.
One of your best, guys - big thumbs up! I have a DD7 (love stereo delay through two amps) and an Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay. Sheer joy! Greetings from Holland - Tim.
Lads, you are getting so good at this now, very concise and informative. Great to hear them all together ... Want to here more oil can types ... Interesting...m mmm
Dan, you never cease to amaze. You must be a smash at parties with the party-tricks up your sleeve. 13:21 Great show.
Watching while prototyping pedals. The most fitting background entertainment I could ask for
I have a Belle Epoch Delay on the way, hoping it works well in front of an amp. I just love how Dan just gets lost, almost overwhelmed by excellent sounding tones sometimes ~26:30. Priceless!
You keep getting better & better guys. Bringing light to concepts & sounds I've never been able to explain. But now I can hear it & say, "More of that please!" Ever thought of a TPS roadshow?!
Yes! Couldn't agree more Mick-it's those idiosyncrasies that add flavor and it's what we love. Great episode gentleman. I have my eye on the Belle Epoch next.
I absolutely love the Foxgear Echosex Baby, TPS introduced me to it back on the 'beginner pedal board' challenge and I've used it ever since!
I find the idea of embracing imperfection interesting, too. I have a Strymon DIG and that emulates the imperfections of early digital delays, from a time when there were big constraints in processor speed and memory, so the algorithms of the time had to work within those limitations. And it turns out those characteristics are pleasing.
This sort of thing happens a lot in photography, too.
The Belle Epoch Deluxe continues to steal the show every episode it appears on. 🤟
Yep, my wallet took the hit and I have one because of TPS. Totally worth it. I had the non deluxe version at first but sold it and made the switch
@@JasonClute I had the non deluxe and found the preamp too dark, is the deluxe preamp any different?
@@bobilly its been a minute since I had the non deluxe but from what I can remember, it’s not worlds apart but I think the deluxe is sweeter sounding. I think the regular version has a trim pot inside that controls the gain. Don’t think it changes brightness. The deluxe doesn’t have that but I’ve never cared. I run it like Mick where it’s on almost all the time and I use an expression to blend in delay. CB took more care in replicating the pre amp in the deluxe right down to the 22V rails the original EP had. I run it after my drives but into a modded GE7 running at 18V where I tweak some high end up before going into the front of my amp. I’ve got it in the loop of a switcher so sometimes I do put it before drives. It took me a minute to warm up to it when I made the switch. It doesn’t do as much wow and flutter as non deluxe as this video showed. But now it’s just part of my rig and don’t see letting it go 🤘🏽
I find that the Deluxe gives my dry signal a slight upper mids bump. Could be just how it interacts with the rest of my chain though.
Great video. The RE-20 is an underrated, totally amazing delay pedal which is 95% close to the original RE-201 sound-wise. In case you don't keep it on your board, it is a great studio tool still due to the tap tempo and ramp-up feature. We even tried to re-amp a vocal track through it with great results. A secret weapon for Josh Homme, Johnny Greenwood, Caleb Followill, Jamie Cook, Yngwie Malmsteen, Brad Paisley, Brent Hinds, Paul Weller and countless others.
My favourite...after using originals for decades...sold them all Vox LT,Binson,Meazzi,Roland 301 etc. But my favourite is The Hall&Collins Signature Echo (made in Britain)(David Gilmour bought one. It emulate different devices Meazzi drum and tape echo,Vox Long Tom, Binson Echorec, Echoplex,Copycat,Roland and more. It's a very capable machine for the Hank sound, but also for Gilmour and Edge stuff...very versatile machine. Hope to see it in the show someday....it's not that expensive 499 for the UK. You've made me buying lots of pedals....I can start a lil shop ;) I love your shows , downside watching you both it result in GAS a lot!!! Thanks I wouldn't miss it for the world .....keep playing, fiddling knobs and keep the banter going! Cheer Rob
I was browsing around on Thomann, looking for a delay pedal. Came past the Boss RE20 and thought "I should look on youtube if TPS have a video on it". I open youtube, first thumbnail I see is this one, uploaded 3 hours ago with the RE20 featured.
You guys are amazing. Excellent service 5 stars
No. way! Be sure to watch the Space Echo deep dive - it was in that too!
Belle Epoch was a game changer for me. First "delay" that I ever bonded with.
Good God - the Belle Epoch Deluxe is such a monster. What an amazing sounding tape delay.
This is so helpful. Exactly what I'm working on right now. Thank you
Hey hey, first episode with G3!
Indeed, looks awesome. Now if only I could afford one....
I have the TC flashback and the Boss DD3. I just love these deep dives into fancy delays. Dreaming about the fancy stuff.
My first delay was a DD-3 and it helped get started but the brightness of the repeats made me hate it for years. After trying loads of analog delays and tape and others I've learned how use the DD-3. Now I can't live without it. Also, honorable mention, the DOD rubberneck is amazing. Hope you guys use it in the show someday.
Isn’t a character delay like where Spider-Man wasn’t in the Avengers but now he is (or was?)
HAHAHAHHAAHAH!!!
Great Episode! I got the Chase Bliss TR RKM and Boonar on my board. I’m always excited when Mick pulls out the Supro. Extra Badass Riffs & Licks incoming
Sorry to piggy back my comments, but when you brought up problematic systems, oil cans had a huge one that really killed them! The viscosity control on the Adineko was for the electrolytic oil because it would congeal when it got cold and would even clot which was hell on the motors and whatnot.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is the session I have been waiting for. Not happy with the delay pedal I currently have but had no idea which to get instead... I like the Echorec Chris Buck had on his board.
Constantly learning so much from this channel. Thanks guys!
You’re most welcome James 🤓👍
Thanks for the lesson, guys! As always. I learned something.
After your last show on the Tape Delays, I got me a Keeley Eccos - LOVE IT! Really enjoy the flanged repeats and second looper function. Stacked with my Flight Time 2, it's just loose yourself time in echo.
I never understood why someone would use slap delay. I’ve always been more of a reverb guy. But experimented with my Echoplex this weekend and now I can’t live without slap back as part of my core tone. Thanks TPS for continuing to inspire to try new things.
I restarted this thinking the audio was broken. Nicely done guys!
1-0 TPS!
Dan you so totally nailed that David Gilmour sound with the Boonar... wow.
Tremendously educational maybe even more so than your average TPS. Many thanks and keep up the good work!
The intro hits home. I hated delay until I got a Line 6 Echo Park, the analog and tape models made me fall in love with modulated, murky and effected delays and sent me down the path I’ve traveled trying tons of great delay pedals that aren’t the DD3!
Yeah they are great but sometimes break unfortunately I'm using a Lovepedal EPH3 now but it only does one thing
Thanks! Now I know that I want a catalinbread belle epoch deluxe. Had no idea until this episode!
Love the great sound and simplicity of my Echosex Baby. Another one of those TPS inspired purchases.
Just got a TC Flashback II - it’s great, and this episode helps me the different modes. Need more coffee mugs at the TPS store!
The Echosex Baby (drum delay) is the one for me. Love it on my board. But always good to take a foray into other areas and see what's awesome for other people!
It is awesome and cheap as chips.
Great show guys. Coincided with me taking delivery of a NU-X tape core deluxe. I am gobsmacked at how good it is. It cost me £55 new - unbelievable. I have had a Boss DM2w for a couple of years, the nux, although different, is on a par plus it has a sound on sound looper setting. Highly recommend it.
After watching this video (several times :D ) I got a major hankering for a delay pedal. I've just picked up a brilliant Black Friday deal on a Memory Man Deluxe, and it's just beautiful! Already written my first new song using it, I love when a sound just brings out inspiration immediately! Thank you for the demonstration and explanation!
COOL! The fact it’s helped inspire a song is just awesome. Nice one David!
Wow, great episode. I'm a delay junkie but was always digital til a few years back when I started getting into analog, not went down the tape route yet.
I recently dove into pedals, and I am loving my TC Electronics Gauss Tape Echo. Never liked delay before this, but this sounds fantastic w/ my JML guitars, Small Clone, RAT, and JHS 3 Series OD through my Katana Artist pretending to be a JC120.
Great show. Thanks as always guys.
what a great episode!! thanks Gents
Great show. Dan's playing is always on another level with delay. Please think about a show with one of the worlds most versatile pedals the BYOC Crown Jewel. Maybe a pedal build and talk about all the gain stages and different boost modules.
I know you guys have played the BED a lot on the show but today it's effect on the top end was really put in stark relief.
It certainly darkens things off.
Good to see Boss getting a look in, sometimes seems like they are overlooked due to their ubiquity (and internet opinions on buffers)
That’s a very eloquently put point. Cheers David!
God, are people still upset about buffers? TGP has to answer for their crimes
Recently bought a digitech obscura for next to nothing. Blows all my other delays away.
Obscura have a lot of character and wide range of sounds...
I just hope it keeps working. My Digitech Jamman Delay (looper) broke itself in storage...
The obscura is also my favorite. Imagine my disappointment when I shelled out for a belle epoch deluxe and liked the obscura better
My first and favorite delay
Also have an obscura. Bought it new because I hadn't heard about Reverb. The digital with bit-rate degradation and tape emulation, if not perfectly accurate, are enchanting. People always tell me how wonderful my delay tone is.
Only complaints, the reverse delay on it is fine, not great, and the analog just lacks something.... I'll probably keep the Obscura and buy a Mem Man/Mem Boy for "that" sound.
Also, if you haven't yet try running out one side of the stereo, through a modulation, and back in to the other side of stereo. Nothing like Mem Man/Boy with an effects loop for repeats, but a cool sound none the less!
Important info Gents - thanks. Fun facts: the early Boss Digital delays were lower fi and stayed out of the way a little better. Also I believe Edge and Lanois have use dthe old Korg digital rack unit in front of the amp and seem to get their character through the lo fi digital and breakup of the amp.
every time I here a meazzi it is heaven. Love the oil can one though. Thanks- great review.
Whenever I hear about Master Ry, I’m all ears. Thanks guys for this show. Now looking forward to VCQ and the long awaited VIP guest!
The VIP is a few weeks out. We might go live next week - no questions just do a live show for the halibut. NiceB
@@ThatPedalShow I can wait for a whale.
Thank you for this - quite the treat. Also you guys seem excited and happy, which makes me wonder who the special upcoming guest is...
So the bucket brigade chips work on an oscillator to base their frequency on. It's very easy to add digital control for these analog chips to add tap tempo and other things. The oscillator can be derived with a timer in a 8 pin processor that can also have a momentary switch for a foot switch. So these processors are basically simple way of giving you more control than previously.
Thanks again for a great show!
Love your delay episodes. I watched 5 Awesome Analog Delays in 2017 and had to test out a Vapor Trail. It's now my go to analog delay. After this episode, I am sure I will have to have a Memory Man, or a DM-2, or an Echo System, ... and there is still that AD-99 Pro... so many great delays.
Haha, nice intro!!! :D :D :D And you make cool reviews, nice playing as well. Just discovered your channel yesterday... :)
This is why I love my Volante. It does a good job of every one of these sounds, even the oil can. Had mine for 8 months and still discovering all it can do.
It’s a brilliant thing. Mick here.
What’s your oil can setting on the volante?
Also would like to know what your Oil Can setting is on your Volante!
I have a Volante and It doesn’t do oil can. You can do “Drum” setting and turn the wear and mechanics all the way up to get it as wobbly as possible.
The DD2, DD3 and so forth were designed IMO to be run through the effects loop rather than being such an in your face delay. I like it in the loop for its delay trails. I have used my DD3 since they first were introduced but have never liked it in front of my amps. It is definitely more loop-friendly.
I love my analog delays by the way. I run one through my effects loop and the other in front of the amp
Fantastic show guys!
Great show guys! Always informative. Now I need them all!! Lol
Really enjoyed your playing on this one Dan.
I really like putting a pitch effect (Boss octave, DigiTech Whammy, POG2, etc) into the loop of the DMM 1100-TT. You can get amazing sounds!!!
My personal pick is a carbon copy deluxe. The bright switch and choice of clean or modulated gives nice flexibility. But man that oil can delay....I gotta look further into that sound. Great show, guys.
I really enjoy the playing in your videos, thanks for the info of course as well.
Thank you MT!
