Money No Object Rig Challenge: Dan vs Mick - That Pedal Show
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 авг 2024
- After last week’s budget rig challenge, how about the no-holds-barred dream rig? The sky is the limit for the one guitar, one amp and three pedals on a board that we could realistically source. What do we choose and who wins?
Life too short for long RUclips videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Now we’ve gone and done it. If last week’s budget rig challenge didn’t upset enough people (bizarrely it did), let’s remove the budget and ask what Dan and I would put together with the gear we have available to us. We stopped a long way short of borrowing £500,000 ’59 Les Pauls and £100,000 Dumbles… Maybe that’s for another day. Nope, this one has a toe still on planet Earth, being the kind of gear we actually take out and gig.
Yes, it’s ridiculous, ostentatious and potentially offensive to some people. If that’s you, please chill out, understand that it's a bit of fun. Dan and I have dedicated our //whole// lives to guitar. And this is all we have to show for it. It's tragically hilarious when you look at it like that.
Enjoy the episode!

And two years later you both own the guitars! Tremendous.
Ha! Never thought of that 👍
I'm not up to date with vintage guitar prices, but imagine they would go for a lot more than they were quoting in this video!
@@WS-bk7uuespecially after the last round of massive worldwide inflation.
I can’t afford any of this. But based on Mick’s outstanding demonstration I am getting a piece of paper and a horn.
Damn, you can afford a piece of paper and a horn? Easy there Mr. Moneybags ;)
You were lucky to have a room. We used to live in corridor
Funny how this absurd challenge just seems like an average 'Show us your rig' thread on The Gear Page.
I love when dan is at a loss because he is having a religious tonal experience lol
He is toning out
The angels of tone start to tickle his inner bits 👍😂🎸🎼🙏
You know it sounds good when Mick is so into it that he forgets to see if the mics are clipping
NOTHING epitomizes this channel like Mick comparing the tone of the horn off of the carpet vs paper @ 12:10. i frickin love this show!
@@metricdeep8856 #BecauseTone
So true! That was a level of tone nerdiness seldom seen.
Dog ears. :-D
BigSh00ts we need an hour + on air horn room tone, through pedals, through excessive ambience...
It changed my life. Made me decide I needed a horn like that.
Dan's rig is probably the most incredible guitar sound I've ever heard. It's 2 a.m and it's fired me right back up again to make some music.
Yes! This is the right result!
Same, its 2:53 where I am right now and I want to cranck my amp up and wake everyone up, I'll wait a few hours though. I don't have work tomorrow... oh I mean today haha
No more T.P.S. after 10 PM, for you guys, lol...
if u like a tele going full icepick-to-the eardrum
to each their own, i guess
Micks sounds are “if all those lawyers and doctors actually played”
Hahahaah!!!
Been watching for years, never enjoyed mick’s playing as much as today.
Thank you sir!
second that
Third that! Only just got to listen to this show today and your playing Mick was totally moving. That 61 is God's Strat for sure.
Albert King!!!!!
In deed !
Dan's style is usually closer to my wheel-house ..but that Strat & Mick.. Damn . Bloody hell..the tone..
This video, gents..is my absolute favourite guitar tones..ever..
Both clean and crunch & higher gain.
Specially the clean on both .
PS: the Vox (with the Celestion Green series speakers) and Dan's red Tele..is also on that very Top.
This was Glooorious.......
Thank you so much.
Kudos from Portugal .
PPS : sorry if u have, and I missed it.., but have you ever tried a Stereo, or a Wet/dry/Wet setup with a Twin Reverb & a Vox AC30 ?
it´s a delight just watching Dan enjoying tone
Agree 100% ! SO GREAT!
💛
"Wide open" "Masters on 3.5" I know that feeling.
Yeah, hardly wide open. Sorry, I mean the tone section wide open - defeated.
Please wear earplugs. You can play much louder, perhaps wide open. Love your show, please take care.
Me: I’m pretty happy with my sound now.
Future me: don’t watch this video then.
Mick’s playing was so good in this one I clapped at home
Dan consistently has some of the best Tele-sounds I've ever heard, but Mick's Strat into the Two Rock with the fuzz on was just... God-like.
Mick has me using my volume knobs a lot more than i use to. I played last weekend an used a les paul with humbuckers first set. Then played a Esquire the rest of the night and was completely happy. Volume knob help you find a lot more tones.
I love how dans faces are either like he’s watching his first kid being born or he just cause a will of something absolutely horrendous
I can see two winners: two men who are lucky enough to get the chance to play the best equipment there is, knowing how privileged they are. And we are all privileged to be able to be part of all this. It is great to see how happy you are doing what you do. Happy new year!
And the winner is… US, you’re ever so loyal viewing and listening audience. Absolutely spectacular, gentlemen! Thank you so much - it gets me even more excited for what is in store from you in 2020! 🎸
As much as I love RED, it's time Dan. That 65 Tele is supreme.
Joel, you just said what we’re all thinking but were too afraid to say.
64
@@millmoormichael6630 guess you didn't read the notes? 65...
Sadly, I agree. Red has been one of my all-time favs, but alas, she has been defeated...
This series is super entertaining. Maybe on suggestion: A rig in between dirt cheap and overly expensive, for the working man musician. A rig that is versatile for gigging, rehearsing and practise. I'd love your educational take on this. If you were a guitarist in a band that plays mostly small clubs, and you were to start over, which essential gear would you choose?
Yeah that would be great. One guitar? I wonder whether they'd recommend something traditional like a Blues Jr and a Tele or think digital and versatile like an HSS strat with a THR100 or something like a Blackstar Silverline...would be a good episode.
For a standard, Fender inspired blues/rock/flexible rig, I think a Fender American Performer of your choice and a Bassbreaker 30R would be a great start, plus a selection of pedals to your tastes, probably a versatile OD/Distortion (1981 DRV?), mod of some sort, and a delay (maybe?)
Den I//Noble Russkie I’d have the American Performer Tele with the split coil humbucker in the neck, the THR100 and drive, reverb, delay, distortion and tuner pedal. Fully reliable, giggable and insanely flexible rig for $3k US or so.
@@jimmythefish Those THRs are amazing amps, can't fault you there!! For a long time I was considering using one for my stereo rig before I decided on a JC40. I did keep my pedal selection to 3 pedals, as per the brief though ;)
I agree! Something like a Squier guitar, with a blues junior, with a mix of like MXR and boss or tone city pedals. That makes a nice in between and will give great sounds. I would love to see Dan and Mick play that setup though.
Live Tonight! (Sold Out): Daniel Steinhardt and The Warm Storm
This needs to be a band, or album
@@melvoid01 100% ..and pressed on 180 gram ...actually Dan vs Mick are so epic it should be pressed on 360 gram
genius!
Mick's tone literally had my jaw open when he clicked on the fuzz! I haven't even finished the video yet, but Mick got this one!
That fuzz sure punished the microphone inputs! 111dB!
Epic, but would be interested to hear you play each others rigs as part of the evaluation. Love the show, guys.
Steven Hadfield that’s a great idea!
Steven Hadfield indeed
I like this idea a lot!
Do this
Totally agree, I was just about to suggest the exact same thing. 👍
The thumbnail on this vid is absolutely legendary.
Buy a rig for each other, spend to impress.
40:36 "I didn't used to like all that hairy top end." There's your new T-shirt
37:41 Dan's micro expressions while listening to Mick play: 10/10
One of the best guitar tones I’ve ever heard Mick
Thank you Sam!
That "warm storm" comment needs to be a new T-shirt.
Dan plays-
Me- thats the rock sound i need
Mick plays-
Me- dang it, theres my clean sound. Now i need 40k lol
Get a Helix or Kemper and you can get it 🤷🏻♂️
Just came to the comments to say the opposite!
Dan: Clean King
Mick: Dirty Dictator
I was floored they didn't run stereo. Just put an AB box between these two rigs. Then you would have the ultimate ridiculous rig, while immediately doubling the cost. Absolute reference material for tones.
youKnowWho3311 yes a wet/dry with the two amps would be so so good!
@@frankieconcepcion7860 i started with digital and ss amps. Ill stick to my bassman. While i dont get to crank it up, i do play and fairly loud volumes by todays standards. The feel is completely different. You just cant get it from kemper or other digital. I have used a kemper in a recording environment, for that it is great. It keeps everything consistent.
Swear I was tearing up when Dan struck his first chord. Happy new year guys and keep doing you in 2020
And I also love it at about 38:54 when Dan says "Oh, don't turn it down, that's so nice..." I think we all feel the emotion in that ... ahhh....
if it sounds that good on youtube, I'm sure I'd be crying on site. shivers, shivers all over me.
never wanted a strat until THIS episode, good god
Literally stunned by Mick's tone and playing. Just, wow.
Thank you Clive. It’s quite the experience, and very inspiring!
Dan: “ah don’t turn it down, it sounds so nice” 😂 Hero!
Mick's rig is probably the best tone I've ever heard. And he plays so nice, please give us more it's such a pleasure to hear !
Bless you Gabin, thank you!
Dan: It's been refinished
Me: Looks at all the scratches and missing paint
Mick wins "unfeasibly loud" hands down. I only saw Dan hit 102 a couple of times, maybe a 103, Mick hit 106 ticking over and at least once was up at 110
Needed to hear Mick/strat through Dan's rig and vice-versa
Both outstanding and wholeheartedly agree about less difference between the teles
Chris Warburton
I thought the same, as well as I’d like to hear how humbuckers sound through Dan’s rig.
@@ionobelisk Especially the Tele though the Two Rock with the tonestack bypass on. Robben Ford's favorite sound.
Gents... that was mental!
The matchless is by far one of my favorite amps, but my LORD was Mick’s rig the best sound I have heard in a long time.
Top notch boys!
After this. I’m glad I’m left handed so can’t try that many guitars. It helps my bank account.
Ditto fellow Southpaw
Ditto I like reading Guitarist mag and finding LH not made.
Malcolm Brown I’m not sure I would go that far. For example for a long time Fender didn’t make left handed Precision basses. That may even still be the case, I haven’t checked but this is also my point. I have to get to know the bass I have. I did manage to find an older one. I’m not looking for a “better” one. I think it forces you to look at other manufacturers because with for example Fender and Gibson you can’t check out dozens to find a good one. Better to buy from a company with better quality consistency then your left handed is likely to be better. I have a Les Paul and I don’t like it but I can’t try out lots to find a good one so I bought a Heritage.
When it comes to vintage you can get into serious GAS which to be honest I think Dan is suffering from. That Tele he has is good. The Strat Mick played is obviously very nice though.
There is another advantage to being left handed. Nobody I know can play my guitars.
Another factor is that I think right handers find it harder to work out what you are playing but if you are left handed you are used to watching right handers. This would be a kind of mean advantage though.
I am left handed, but play right handed. I always focused on chord shapes and solos as a left hand activity.
I loved that, fascinating stuff. It's always great to see you both getting off on tone, sounds, the feel of guitars. Such a really good, solid channel and the chemistry in the team is great. Thanks!
Both rigs sound phenomenal in their respective areas.
I heard that Slash put a poster of Mick on his wall after that. That tone.
This is one of my favourite videos of all time! Have watched this a few times now, over the years. Great stuff.
One of the best videos I've seen in ages, really come across how much you care about the sound and tone.
Setting the date on the DeLorean was priceless. Thanks Mick,You made my day!😜
Thank you. I think you might be the first. :0)
I cannot begin to articulate how great that preamp pedal and flanger sound with the Tele. It is something magical sparkling through the Matchless, just so amazing! A treat for the ears.
Been watching the show since the beginning, I love seeing how the show has evolved over time. Really great stuff, thank you so much for my Friday ritual. Merry Christmas
The friendship and joy is palpable. BOTH episodes were insightful, hilarious & of course USEFUL! Keep up the good work!
This is the episode where I´d rather be in the room with you and hear what it really sounds like! Still goosebumps with earphones too! Yeah guys!!!
Absolutely love this episode. Wishing you guys all the best for 2020.
What an interesting and amazing video - thank you, guys. I tell you what I love about you two... I love how you manage to communicate that emotional thing that we all feel from time-to-time, which is why we all do this crazy thing and spend so much of our money. It really is a beautiful thing.
Dan's impression when Mick plays = priceless. You probably can't be any more emotional, without shedding a tear. It's heart warming to witness such a genuine liking to... Well, anything. Keep up the awesome work guys, and have a great new year!
Feel like the next version of this challenge has to be a duet of Most Versatile & Most Inspiring.
The next episode in this series should be “the gigging musician’s rig”. One that doesn’t scream to be stolen at dive bars, is portable enough to be loaded/unloaded in one trip, and gets all the tone needed to melt faces.
The hardest one of all!
Only just watched this one, utterly epic sounds. Thank you and your team for this episode, your show is the best thing on RUclips
Loved it guys!! Happy New Year and lots of years of That Pedal Show!!
This video is a positive statement for the telecaster and the stratocaster.
Should’ve used the Hiwatt for ultimate celeb points and ungodly volume 🤘
Has your wife mentioned that you're beginning to repeat yourself?
Or wet dry wet with the hi watt and both these rigs...
Loved this episode. Absolutely fallen in love with Mick’s Two Rock CRS. Feel so happy to see you guys so happy 😊 This channel has been the most positive mood lifter for for me throughout 2019! Happy new year guys!
I just want to say that I always love that genuine joy you show in this amazing show of yours.
That fuzz tone. Holy moly. That was unreal. Mick absolutely killed it.
Suffice to say when Dan demo’d his sound I felt how Mick seemed to feel as well. Goosebumps.
Avid watcher of the show for ages.
The mutual respect and genuine friendship Mick and Dan have between each other are just magically. To see two people that love what they are doing and emotionally moved by each others playing is everything that music should be and should bring to the world. Thank you so much for this raw energy and passion on display with your dream rigs.
It's also a reminder of how much there is to discover and learn to put into my own playing.
Even though these setups are completely unattainable to most everyone, I found this your most inspiring episode yet! I LOVE hearing and seeing your reactions, getting so fired up by your own sounds. Thank you for this one!
Watching some old videos a year later, I miss watching you guys just hang out and make a bunch of noise in the room. Hoping you’re able to get back in together soon!
Ah man. We miss it too. Appropriately enough we've booked some new filming dates. April 1 is the first. We will be back in the room!
Dan's sound straight into amp was glorious!
What a show... I literally giggled out loud when Mick went flat out with the fuzz, my god! Dan, some utterly lovely and epic sounds but Mick just struck such a chord in my heart with that playing. You two are an inspiration! Keep up the great work in 2019!
Luv this show and demo! It truly reinforces that the amp and cab are extremely critical to the final sound. So much debate on vintage guitar tone but start with the best amp you can get then build on top of that. Happy New Year guys
I remember Mick saying how he struggled sometimes with various aspects of guitar, looking depressed as he discussed it. Now that look on his face, the one that says 'I found a little piece of guitar tone nirvana.' Best I've heard you sound Mick! As an aside, considered getting the custom shop to take a look at that Strat? Could be worth it, especially given how happy you looked playing it.
Lead tone goes to Mick. Rhythm tone goes to Dan. What a great demonstration of different tastes that both work supremely well in their own ways.
WOW! Unbelievable tones from both of you. I can only imagine what it must have sounded like in the room itself. My favourite episode to date! Thank you.
that's the best strat sound I've ever heard on youtube. it gave me goosebumps. thank you, y'all are just awesome
So many inspiring tones, such a fantastically different sound between the two of you but I'd be over the moon with either.
Holy shit, Mick. Best I think I've ever heard you. And great playing man. You're clearly inspired.
Absolutely the best episode, bar non. Great tone and great playing! My favorite part was watching each reaction, comparing their main axes to each vintage guitar. We could clearly hear what you were reacting to as well. With that said, a 100 watt amp humming (does not need to be anywhere near 10), will always put to shame a low wattage stage compatible amp of today. Great job guys, you are the best.
Easily the most fun I've had watching a RUclips video. Epic epic tones.
„a warm storm“ & a warm THANK You boyz! You guys hands are just ♠️ce !
Do you know what I love about this show - you both play in such different styles, Mick so silky and bluesy - and Dan, I have to say, is one of the most underrated players on RUclips in my opinion - so expressive.
Merry Xmas guys.
2nd Dan's playing. Wish I could play like Mick anyway but Dan I could listen to for ages.
Best show on the Tube
Brilliant playing and feel
Always inspiring to listen to and try new sounds
Cheers guys!
You guys are the best. Thanks for a 2019 full of great content!
12:20 -- Mick invents the kazoo
Looks like he’s debating on walking out the door with that gold tele.
Really enjoy your videos; they’re very informative and entertaining at the same time!! I love chorus sounds, a very close second to a good overdrive. Thanks and keep up the great work!
These 2 shows have been the best you've done in my opinion. Great stuff.
Mick, I'm really smitten with the finish on the '61 Strat and decided to do a bit of digging and found that the defined stages of sunburst wasn't uncommon during the 60's. Indeed there is a '64 Strat in the Guitar mag "Stratocaster Bible" that clearly shows the three black/red/amber colours (although really worn) almost identical to yours. Whoever did the refinish on the '61 did a really good job. I think it's gorgeous and sounds celestial.
32:53 the most real moment on TPS ever. I felt that so hard.
Highgate Club I think we all felt Dan’s pain there
Highgate Club hope Dan has 4 grand (Or 8) to spare. 😂
I live vicariously through these videos. Seriously though, I look so forward to them.
Absolutely awesome stuff from both of you guys - the emotional connection with the music comes across loud and clear in both of you but especially Dan in this film for whom the words wistful and longing come to mind - looked like there would be tears of joy at certain points! So amazing to see the passion in both of you, and yes you are in a privileged position - but you’re not lucky, you’ve both worked bloody hard for years to get where you are. Just do us all a favour and keep on doing what you do, sharing your experience and knowledge with the rest of us. The hour I watch you two is blissful. Thank you!
Thank you so much for that Dean. It is about emotion and we are always straight about that. Not everybody gets it but we’re glad you do!
I’m not a Strat guy, but Jesus H. Christmas those fuzz tones from Mick were unreal.
I felt there same way
Dan was having such a spiritual experience when Mick was playing that I thought he was going to start speaking in tongues!
Dream a Little Dream.. of Gear. Great episode, showing us your personal tone quest. This episode is for many of us that love music and sounds soooo much and we play guitar. One thing that i noticed is that both of you were inspired and couldnt hide the joy of being tone satisfied. Live long and Prosper.
Sometimes a guitar comes into your hands that is simply magic. Well boys, amps and guitars were magic here. Absolutely killer sound for both of you. Stunning!
THIS! THIS is the episode I've been waiting for!
32:51 Dan loses all hope after being diagnosed with another case of GAS
Happy New Year Dan 'n' Mick , thanks for the great content last year.......got me through a bad time , so I thank you both for taking my mind off things...
Here’s wishing you all the best Jason, thanks for watching!
Love you guys. The thumbnail is so damn funny, I get a gut laugh every time it pops up on feed . LMAO that Mick jaw line lol. All the best Mate.
“tragically hilarious” - you said it! Self-indulgent yes - but your self-indulgence allows us the experience these sonic hights without spending similar bucks... so in a way your providing a public service 😃
If you’ve got the cash splash it, and you should not be embarrassed. Fender all the way, the Strat & the Two Rock or the Tele & the Two Rock I’d be very happy with either. Brilliant video Dan & Mick. 👍🏻😎👊🏻
Watching the shared passion, great equipment and hearing killer tone - priceless!
Both brilliant but, man, Mick, the dynamics, some of that sound made me get up and do a little jig of joy in my kitchen. GREAT work.
