Figuring out complex challenges. Combine that with passion, a kind soul, and be able to express his thoughts.
I'm sorry for sounding negative but I could not help think that there was a lot of plugging and advertising Rick's ventures, it sounded very scripted at the start of the show.
I met Rick at NAMM. We stood and chatted, mainly about our kids. He is “real” and he deserves his fame, I’m so happy for him and I’m so happy he is the greatest music teacher/ music ambassador in history.
Everyone that's met him says the same. Some of the greatest musicians on the planet seem to have respect for him too. Hard not to. His talent is massive and he's a very personable guy. Loves music with a passion, and isn't a snob. I hate him. 😅 ( I bet he's a good dad too. 😉).
You guys are so adorable, you almost seem nervous around Rick. Your genuineness and excitement always come through, and it's really what makes the two of you stick out❤
I reckon what you’re sensing as nerves is probably just humility. Mick has interviewed the biggest names in the industry, and Dan is always hungry to learn.
@@foolhardymcpain I know Mick has interviewed some of the biggest names, but the interview is not what I'm referring to. It's when Mick started playing and asking about their sound. It was cute, it was genuine, and of course it comes from them being humble.

I've learned so much about pedals and gear from TPS, and so much about theory and production from Beato- I don't think you guys really get how much so many of us have benefitted from your collective knowledge, teaching, and insights!!!!

You guys have an awesome channel that I’ve been watching for quite some time now. Yes, I actually did subscribe today, yet your content is not lost on me one bit. Both of you guys are very talented players in my opinion, and have a lot going for you and your channel. I find it heartwarming that both of you seem like unworthy little kids while talking to Rick. Rick is amazing himself, don’t forget that you are too!

He did a great job today and always seems to handle interviews (on both sides) with aplomb. It's very impressive; I guess he's just really smart. It bugs me every time Beato says he was a "college professor." He was in his 20s with no advanced degrees. He was an instructor. It's great that he had that experience, but teaching courses at a college does not make one a "professor."
There’s an air of restraint during the whole episode… I really like Rick‘s stories and the fact that he‘s at TPS but I have the feeling of a format mismatch somehow: maybe it would’ve been better the other way round - the boys being interviewed by Rick.
I kinda wish I didn’t learn barre chords first, I wish I had learned inversions first. To be fair, learning the “E” and “A” shape barre chord is a fantastic way to learn your root notes and you’re well on your way to understanding the fretboard.
@Smell The Glove Learning the open chords and barre chords first is best for memorisation and placement/muscle memory. Then ideally revisiting them ,music-theoretically, later on and seeing the r,3,5 etc is a more satisfactory way of understanding the major scale and its magic. " Out of the emptiness. Salvation !! ". It's a Rock n Roll Creation.
I think I was closer to 17 when I actually went in and tackled F barre. When I look back at it, the song I was learning at the time might not even use the full F barre. Still, I learned it because it felt like the right time to do it. Nowadays I "Hendrix" it most of the time.
Well to be fair, he took lessons 6 months after starting playing from a jazz musician on his paper route that owned a Music Store and his first electric was a Gibson Les Paul 😂 those things help lol
I had the opportunity too meet Rick back in the 80s. I was living in NYC . I was sitting on a bench just hanging out near Bleeker street and playing my acoustic. Up walks Rick. We talked for awhile and he asked me if I knew any stones songs. I started too play Angie. As it turns out it was his favorite stones song. Hard to believe that was so many years ago
I hope everyone appreciates the subtle “what were they doing there” Spinal Tap reference 🙌. The talent and knowledge sitting in the room is unbelievable. Love this and love you 😘
When I saw Rick on Anderton's with Lee, I had my fingers crossed this collaboration was going to happen. This is such a great meeting of the minds from different perspectives of the guitar world. Thanks all for arranging this.
Could Rick be thinking of his DOD FX10 bifet pre amp pedal. Designed originally for amplifying acoustics, it is an awesome piece of kit. Put in front of any pedal & used judiciously, it makes for supercharged effects.
Guys, I like your channel. Great content. But please, please stop with the honking. I often have the volume turned up so I can hear little subtle differences between pedals (or whatever) and then you have this loud HONK for no reason. It's such an ugly and unnecessary noise. Please. Hmm... should I buy a $50 gain pedal or pay a few 100$/month to rent a big room where I can crank my amp up? I keep hoping someone will let me use their space off-hours.
Have the original THR and had the Spark. The Spark feels like playing an app-based modeler through a speaker but the THR feels much more immediate and organic. The THR compels me to play more so I sold the Spark. That being said, the Spark would probably be appreciated more by a younger player.

This is a very inspiring talk. I am about to turn 33, next week, I have a Master's degree in philosophy and I am in the final stages of writing my doctrate. Just recently, I decided that I want to do something completely different and study Audio Engineering, once I finished my Phd. This video seriously gives me hope for my future. ❤
Not trying to start a fight, I just don’t talk to many philosophy PhDs. Over the past few years in the US our government has been talking about having blue collar net tax payers such as myself pay for college graduates student loans…. Since you’re a philosophy doctor, do you think this is ethical? I mean, on its face it’s unfair, that’s obvious. Again, not trying to talk shit or anything, just like to get your viewpoint.
Why not? First degree and PhD is COMPLETELY useless. May as well go ahead and get another completely useless degree. Then you can become an untalented, useless person and drag on the economy like the majority of your generation.
@@smelltheglove2038 Why should I have to pay for ethanol subsidies or bailing out people who choose to live in hurricane zones? Because we live in a society. Having young people with less debt to worry about is good for the economy in the long run because there is more freedom of movement from one job to another and entrepreneurship. Same is true of healthcare not tied to employer.
@@bbdeffect I don’t think we should have to do any of the things you mention. However, people that get hit with hurricanes usually have home owners insurance… most states it’s a law. Having lived in Va. It’s just as asinine as comparing a force of nature to people who signed a contractual agreement to repay a loan, then forcing those who didn’t sign that contract to pay for it. Economics aside, how is it ethical to force someone to pay for a contract that you signed and they didn’t. Also, if college was worth it, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. If it was such a good investment, the person who went to college shouldn’t have any issue paying back said loan. As it stands now, if your education doesn’t get you job where you make enough to pay back the loan, you simply wasted time and resources. It's such a great balance of entertainment and knowledge but has the coolest community too. Also, Rick seems like a genuine, cool dude. I'll check out his online lessons, never to late to start learning theory.
At roughly 47:36: "It's all about the part. Any sound can sound good with the right part." I think that's something to dwell on a bit, to think of in the context of the discussion, the playing, the inflection. It's good to think of both backwards and forwards, as a tone can form the germ of a song idea, just as a song farther along in forming can inspire a search for a tone which could fit in. Of the many things said, that one thing resonated most for me. Thanks, guys.
Finally Rick Beato gets to talk about guitars and gear! The only thing I wish is taht Beato Book was also physical. I hate sitting at the computer trying to read educational material or thinking of music. That stuff still works the best for me on the couch with a physical book at night. Despite studying engineering and doing almost everything on computer. It also has an emotional connection and more respect when it sits in the bookshelf.
Great show. Dan and Mick are great at interviewing people. It was also good to see Mick a tad nervous playing in front of Rick like I would be in front of Dan & Mick!

Great interview, loved the deep dive into recording guitar tones. Feels like the days of mass experimentation for recorded guitar tones is in the past. We now have consistency and ease and good quality yes, epic tones, not so much. Golden age for guitar tone me was the very early 90’s, Eric Johnson, Aching Baby era The Edge, Neil Young Weld (albeit live), just monumental guitar sounds.
One word says it all, AWESOME! This was kept alive every second of the episode and I so much appreciate the work you put into your shows and what you share. Mick, you're so well prepared and it is pure joy to be in the receiving end. So much good information and knowhow to take away today. Thanks so much, Rick, Dan and Mick! Cheers, Thor

Totally agree with Rick on the less gain thing, I play Blackened Death Metal myself, and I quad track my guitars, 2 tracks with my Engl Steve Morse sig amp, and 2 tracks with the Rectifier model in my Helix, and on the Engl I have the gain at like 9, o clock,( or around 3 however you want to look at it), and on the Recto model I literally have the gain at 8 o clock/2. Especially when you're multitracking or using multiple amp sounds, back the gain WAY down 😂 Anyway great video as always guys.

Ah, the 70s, such a great time for music! Speaking of big cabs, I used to load my B series Ampeg 4x12 cab into the back of my 75 Firebird. It had the hump in the middle between the seats, so you had to lean the driver's seat all the way forward and finagle it into the back. It just fit door to door. I ended up trading it for a JC-120 which was heavy but a breeze to travel with compared to the Ampeg, but boy do I wish I still had it, it was glorious!
It was such an honor to be on the show! Thanks so much guys🙏🏻

@@reverb508 no, it was the event I described. My rants are a more recent phenomenon, brought on by Covid hysteria, woke brainlets, and people proudly advocating for communism.
@@smelltheglove2038 yeah. You just sound like a joy to hang out with.
@@reverb508 again, I wasn’t outspoken until my life was ruined over authoritarian Covid policy that was arbitrary and stupid.
DOD made the bifet boost
Friday night in Australia and this pops up, hells yeah!
He’s so much on every one’s channels it’s like a new pedal release 😂 But please don’t stomp him 🥾
You guys are so charming and endearing. Please know that TPS is so much more than your regular RUclips channel.
Its 4am here in California and I was just about to sleep UNTIL.... 😂
Saaaaaaame
Thumbs up Rick is like a great knowlegeable musician and big hearted music nerd uncle for many of us. This episode will be a joy to watch.
Name drop horn!!!
I will never get tired of hearing anyone talk about Eddie Van Halen and his playing- HONK
Some people have a gift... some people have drive.... a few have both.
that felt like less than 15 minutes, not 53 minutes. time flies, and all that.
That was great. Can’t wait to see D&M on Rick’s channel.
Great show. Dan and Mick are great at interviewing people. It was also good to see Mick a tad nervous playing in front of Rick like I would be in front of Dan & Mick!
Christmas in April. Nice!
Just hope Rick gets an Interview with Jimmy Page, Sir Paul or Sir Elton
Can't believe this, I'm a fan of both. Thank you Rick, thank you TPS. This is an unexpected and amaizing episode.
You totally have to do the two double stack Marshall wet-dry rig now. I mean C’mon.
Maybe the angle is “Ridiculous rigs…or ARE they?” Go off the rails with some crazy over the top setups and see if it actually sounds good.
I know he puts on his sneakers one foot at a time like the rest of us...but I'm pretty sure he does it in augmented mixolydian
I knew he had stopped by! When I saw him at Ander tons, I was like hmmm...clearly he knows Dan n Mick, if he didn't stop by this time,it's Gunna happen for sure. How far are you guys from andertons? It's a few hours drive no?
DOD bifet gentleman
Early 2000s hard rock was pretty horrible.
My first guitar was Les Paul Custom as well.
Rick is the bomb, thanks for having him on. You guys make a great team.
Wow what what a wealth of knowledge it would be to get to hang out with u gents AWSOME fellas Thanx👍
NAME DROP HORN!! We missed you!!!!!! It’s been so long!!
DOD made the Bifet Preamp. I bought one when Rick mentioned it a couple of years ago (I've just checked it was actually 5 years ago).
Mick at a Napalm Death session? Too bad there wasn't a camera, that would be gold.
Ah, not actually there. He’d done ND - this was a different session!
DOD Bi-fet maybe
Lads, I knew you guys first. 😜
I wish I could play that "badly"! ;)
Soooooooooo glad this went in the how to record direction. Thanks so much for asking the RIGHT questions, as basic as they may have been. Some of us just don't know.
Exceptional. You can feel the appreciation, experience, expertise, talent, professionalism oozing from the room. It great to see. Wholesome indeed. Makes me feel good to see and I hope I am not being presumptuous Dan & Mick in saying it impacting yourselves moving forward. An added energy that you can't help but feel good about. Thank you Rick and thank you TPS for sharing your knowledge and talent. Alan
Been following you both since the beginning!! Two of the best RUclips channels for music knowledge 🙌🤘
How much does Rick charge you guys?
The sound of that clean strat with reverb is incredible! Is it stated somewhere how you capture these recordings?? Using akg mics on the amps? Any room mic?! Sheesh so good
Was that cord that was played the same cord played in the Who song Pinball Wizard?
I just adore all 3 of you - and both of your lovely off camera, but just as fascinating teams and families. What makes this song great? It's all of you and a long list of lovely, passionate personalities and inspiring musicianship. You have made the world more of a home - and have brought our heroes right up close. It's an amazing time to be! I am so grateful!
All that beautiful gear and all I hear is hot air
Listen Mick and Dan. You're on your way to becoming legends...but you're sitting next to Rick Beato right now.
Especially when you're multitracking or using multiple amp sounds, back the gain WAY down 😂
Anyway great video as always guys.
Well done boys. Corking. ❤
👏 so fun but yet informative! The crux of RUclips. The blend of content styles that make RUclips so fun to watch! Way to play Mick, way to play (I had to put headphones on just hear that great playing….much appreciation) 👏
Rick is cool as f***.
Thanks again chaps.
Cringe
Nice boots Mick, love these RW Moc toe !
