  • In Episode 355 of Things We Said Today, Ken Michaels, Allan Kozinn and Darren DeVivo interview Peter Jackson, the director of “The Beatles: Get Back” - the most anticipated Beatles project since “The Beatles Anthology,” in 1995. Mr. Jackson is also, of course, the director of the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies, and the extraordinary World War I documentary, “They Shall Not Grow Old.” And true to form, the master of film epics spent no less than four hours with us. Included is lots of new information about the film and the techniques Mr. Jackson used to make it - including demonstrations of his new AI-based audio system (MAL), which goes far beyond spectral technology in separating layers of sound within a mono recording. Lots of talk as well about the Nagra tapes, Michael Lindsay-Hogg, the power dynamic within the Beatles during the making of “Let It Be,” and other topics - and a number of mysteries Mr. Jackson still wants to get to the bottom of.

I was also born in 1961 in New Zealand, but having older siblings I was marinated in the Beatles from the time I was about 4 years old... Their music actually shaped my ideas of what music should saound like. When I was 5 years old I was given the Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby single for Christmas. I still have it :)

This was an historic interview. You folks should be VERY proud of yourselves. You posed excellent thoughtful questions that fans were hoping that SOMEONE would ask Peter Jackson. The beauty of this long-form interview format is that Peter Jackson was given the liberty to fully flesh-out his thoughts and ideas that the typical brief press interaction simply would not allow; and, as show-runners, you clearly were determined to give him the floor, and our undivided attention, without interruption. This is almost unheard of in today's media environment. The questions came after Jackson had exhausted everything he had to say on the given topic before him. If the documentary goes onto Blu-Ray, I hope they include this excellent presentation.....simply spectacular. Thank you very much....BRAVO!

One of my favorite scenes is when Ringo and friends are sitting there in the doldrums, the morning after George quit the band, and it's all heavy, and then as if on cue, in comes a florist's delivery man and he says in a tone as if someone just died, 'These are for George Harrison,' and Ringo burst out laughing because the comedic timing of that is just priceless. I loved it, like right then I knew that Ringo was thinking, 'Oh, George will be back, don't worry, we're too close as brothers for this to be the end.' And I thought any of them would've had the same reaction no matter who quit the band, they were that close.

I will always be grateful to Peter Jackson for having corrected this long-standing perpetuated myth that this was one of the darkest episodes of the Beatles legacy. Instead, it a glorious story of redemption by 4 truly remarkably talented men who genuinely loved each other. Jackson let the movie speak for itself and what you witness is an unsurmountable pressure they put upon themselves, and yet they emerged with some of the greatest songs ever created. The movie truly humanizes them and shows the staggering amount of work put into creating their magic. Along the way you get to know John, Paul, George and Ringo like never before as 4 completely natural and genuinely nice people. My respect for them only grew from this movie. I’m sadden that this has been hidden for this long and we have lost so many of them - Linda, Maureen, Billy, George Martin, Mal Evans and of course George and John. Thank you Peter for doing this.

Thank you all. Brilliant interview. Most enlightening. 4 hours went by in a flash!! Peter certainly conned Disney into publicising 6 hours across the 3 films when it's actually 8 hours... MORE PLEASE!! Peter just has to get the extended version up and running for sale next year.. The longer demo versions would be great. 'Eddie" has to feature - if no video of their dogs at that time, use video of their other dogs like Martha or use photos... just get "Eddie" in the mix! Let It Be upgraded by Peter would be fantastic to complement Get Back in a blu-ray package along with a CD of complete demo songs or medley that I'm sure if the mono audio can be broken down like it has been then Giles Martin really will have some great material to work with... he could cheat and iron out any bum notes too to make something really special?
So the message is to Peter - get badgering Apple and Giles to pursue the above...get talking!!! And then raid the Apple film vaults to retrieve those dusty cans and recover any more studio recordings footage for say White Album, Abbey Road etc.... in my lifetime please!!!!
Well done guys!! Spread the word....

I think overall the 3 episode documentary is brilliant. Just some observations, though: 1- When it comes as a physical Blu Ray release box, the complete performances (at least the Rooftop and January 31 takes used on 'Let it Be' album) must be included. No interruptions whatsoever. 2- A menu select for performances only. 3- More audio and video bonus. I'm talking about the music, which is by far the most important thing. Surely there's ton of outtakes and material.

The power of pictures was triggered by the pleasure you heard and imagined. There was always so much personality that seeped through the music.
My love of the Beatles started by sneaking into the record cabinet while home alone. I chose Stg. Pepper due to the technicolor cover that grabs you…then Abbey Road, Let it Be, Yellow Submarine and went backwards. Somehow The White album had been lost or never gotten. Fantastic fantastic, mindblowing conversation that acts as a perfect compliment to the series itself. Excellent. I will say this though: I was surprised no one could think of why they would have an upright. "Old Brown Shoe"! Rehearsed during "Get Back", was on the short-list (but crossed-out) and was the next b-side. So "Old Brown Shoe" I would imagine would be the strongest contender. (And "Golden Slumbers" is a grand piano song, all the way, definitely not an upright piano. Besides, the last thing they needed for that album was another heavy piano ballad from Paul.)

Yes, there are a lot of things that might be surmised, but in the absence of paperwork documenting the session, I think what we were looking for was evidence of some kind. There’s a really good theory in Vol. 2 of A is for Apple.

@@allankozinn192 Actually, at that point you were just brainstorming song titles (that were unlikely) with no evidence whatsoever. Which is why "Old Brown Shoe" is the most likely, given the "evidence": it was the next b-side, was rehearsed extensively at Abbey Road (with Billy Preston), it was up-tempo George song (which would fit the criteria of needing another George song that Peter Jackson mentioned), it had made the tentative list that Jackson showed you, and it uses an upright piano on it. Not sure if you're musicians, but there is definitely a big difference between an upright piano song and a grand piano song. I heard a bunch of wild guesses, nothing particularly "evidence-based". It's no big deal but since you were trying to get to the bottom of it for so long, I thought I would point out what was the most obvious choice. PS: For all we know, they were playing "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", it's a complicated song, and they might have tried a stand-up piano on it. Right off the top of my head, low upright piano notes doubling the main guitar riff would get a similar effect that doubling and tripling the guitar would.

I think the extended will happen the standard release will make Disney a lot of money inevitable we get a longer cut. especially as a lot of people who don't have Disney + will wait for a home release. A phenomenal amount of work by Peter and his team. This Man deserves every acclaim going for this Oscar, Academy award I'm giving him everything.

i watched the rooftop concert several times. To see them actually playing what we've heard on the Let it Be album is so incredible... I've never thought of Dig A Pony as one of John's best songs, but seeing them playing it is amazing.
The interviews on the street and the cops downstairs bother a little. I hope on the blu ray, they have the concert on its own. The spit screens are great!
John however was in a creative 'dip' at this point, and Paul and George were pouring out songs at will.
John DID however have a great further 1969 with The Ballad of J&Y, I Want You, Give Peace A Chance, Because, Come Together, Cold Turkey.
John also works on the other songs. He is absolutely not as negative as he appeared to be in the Roling Stone interview in 1970.

Out of all recorded history, no electric guitar riff is more fun to play than that main opening lick from Dig a Pony.

People are talking about the length but it wasn't long enough as far as I'm concerned. I was sad when it ended and could have easily watched the entire 60 hours of footage. I hope more will be released at some point.

Just finished "bingewatching" your videopodcast, it's half past three in the morning in Lueneburg, Germany. What a great four hours that was! Peter Jackson really amazes me in so many ways ( and now we know he'd make a great investigator too :-) ). Huge thanks to all involved!

Thanks for all your work to you and to Mr. Jackson for his genius.
I think for "Get Back" the Beatles did what divorced couples do sometimes, they try to get the love back again-but it is too contrived and almost a parody of the once great magical love in the band. A faded echo of the fresh and wonderful early days.

My observation on the GEORGE cliffhanger walkout at the end of episode 1. First as Mr. Jackson says it may be a culmination of events and a buildup from George BUT what I noticed was that it happened as they were working on GET BACK . Paul was getting positively manic and offering suggestions on the guitar arrangement. John and Paul seemed to be having a great time working on it then as the were going over again the GET BACK refrain part George had been playing this kind of A7 style dischordant chord voicing , which is what he had been using since the inception of the song when PAUL suddenly said " We want to get away from that" talking about GEORGES chord ! GEORGE SEEMS to look increduosly at JOHN and say "" get away from that !" Meaning his , Georges playing of the chord. Then there is a short discussion where PAUL says they have used that chord and it is PASSE' , GEORGE says a chord is not PASSE' and then Paul starts comparing it to "dranies" trousers! As if its out of fashion! After that GEORGE seems to mostly have dropped out of playing and just smokes another cigarrette! Soon after he seems to stand up and say " Right I will be leaving the band now" thats what I saw, watched it about 4 times in a row....
