    I shot my last short film almost entirely on a Viltrox 33mm. They are making great lenses.

      Thanks! Yes we just used a single 1’ x 1’ Litepanels Astra handheld to light. Picture profile and settings are listed in the beginning of the video after our logo. We Didn’t really do much color grading. We did a little color correction in some shots adding a little saturation or exposure adjustment where needed but we did not add any creative LUTs. Looking at this lens some more... the Viltrox has basically ZERO focus breathing and the manual focus ring is linear, not by wire. Staggering for a lens at this price point.

    Does this vignette on crop sensors? and how's the autofocus noise for video?

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  2 года назад

      Not sure what you mean “would it vignette on crop” - it covers full
      Frame. Autofocus noise very quiet. Never heard it.

      @@FilmJams Thanks!
      what I mean by crop are the Sony A6000-A6600 and the APSC mode on Sony A7 cameras. Because I've seen some reviews when it's on f1.8, there are dark corners (vignette)

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  2 года назад +1

      @@si.jessie hmm nah won’t vignette on a crop sensor. Maybe on some large format sensors but def not a crop sensor.

    Not sure how you can call this bokeh smooth and circular... it’s neither. :O I’m not even that particular about bokeh, and with some lenses it may be weird, but interesting. With this Viltrox, I think it’s just downright obnoxious. It’s the only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger on this lens. But that really might kill it for me.

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  8 месяцев назад

      Hmm 1:27 and 2:53 - how would you describe that bokeh? Looks pretty smooth and circular to me. Actually looks better than some of my Nikon lenses like the 50mm that have octagonal bokeh which I personally don’t like. And this Viltrox I much prefer to other lenses that create a crescent moon bokeh. Maybe you’re used to perfect circles? To me bokeh isn’t about being perfect it’s about having personality and these Viltrox lenses have a personality I like. But there’s so many lenses out there to choose from now - if it’s not your thing check out some Zeiss glass. They tend to have more sterile circular bokeh that you might like better. But you’ll also pay a premium for that.

    • @rickbiessman6084
      @rickbiessman6084 8 месяцев назад

      @@FilmJamsI think those are pretty good examples of what I mean. At 1:27, if you look at the upper right hand corner, you can see that not only the bokeh balls get squished (I don’t mind swirly and cat’s eye bokeh), but they seem to have weird protrusions (at 3:01 and 3:18 there are even better examples of this). Also, there are off-center onion rings; in the lower right hand corner the center of the onion rings seems to be right at the edges of the bokeh balls. And then there’s that dark line going through the balls. I haven’t seen anything that strange in any lens. And at 3:52 or 5:43 the little lights in the trees almost become triangular. ...which, again, I wouldn’t even necessarily find that offensive. I had a cheap Sony 16mm f/2.8 APS-C lens that has a kind of triangular bokeh that I thought was actually pretty cool. But this just looks really rough to me.

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  8 месяцев назад +1

      @@rickbiessman6084 Part of what you're seeing can be the shape of the actual light themselves...those Xmas lights at 5:43 are a bit triangular. And bokeh on the edges of the frame is always going to look different than bokeh in the center of the frame. This is shot full frame mode, so you're seeing some of the character of the lens on the edges. Shooting in S35 mode, this would be minimized. But many lens manufacturers create a softer effect on the edges of frame as many people prefer it. There's a reason anamorphic lenses are so expensive..and it's not because how clinical and clean they are, it's because they create stylized footage. Like I said, I think you would like a Zeiss lens a lot more than these. To me, they're awesome tho. Love the interesting way they render bokeh!

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  8 месяцев назад +1

      @@rickbiessman6084 Just so you have a little comparison...check these $20,000 Cooke s4 lenses - also shot on a7s III in same full frame mode - you can clearly see at 3:42 in the Cooke video (link below) that on the edges of the frame, the bokeh changes - this is just a part of how certain lenses are designed. Some lens manufacturers minimize it, others embrace it: ruclips.net/video/VpVGz1MREOY/видео.html

    • @rickbiessman6084
      @rickbiessman6084 8 месяцев назад

      @@FilmJams Thanks for that example. Interesting to see that. Sure, anamorphic lenses are not about clinical perfection - and some have crazy distortion. :D
      I actually do like the 24mm GM a lot (don’t own one but have used it a few times), but there are definitely lenses with more "character" that I’ve enjoyed a lot, e.g some vintage SLR lenses. I guess it just goes to show that bokeh is a matter of taste.
      I would still say that the Viltrox’ bokeh is not exactly clean or smooth tho. :)
