An IMPORTAN NOTE about the lens corrections profiles provided by Viltrox, it works with RAW and JPEG in Photoshop with ACR but only in JPEGs in Lightroom, although is possible to edit the code of the profile to use it in RAW in LR too. I hope they launch this 24/35/50 AF line for the Nikon Z mount.
That threw me off as well, when he talked about little focus breathing but this is somehow weirder. I would not use this for video on a full frame camera, if I didn't explicitely want this effect. Would've been interesting to see, how it looks on an APS-C body, supposedly it should be a little less extreme there.
I wrote under this video when it was published before, so will repeat. I think Chris is too harsh on this lens is his final judgement. I have seen many of his reviews for lenses with the similar or worse image quality where his final conclusion would be "still good value for money". In this case I do not see any major flaws that would prevent me from buying this lens at this price point. Especially considering the quality of the previous offerings from Viltrox.
Hi Chris, first I'd like to thank you for all your videos, I enjoy them very much. If possible, may I please nominate the tiny Tamron 20mm f2.8 for sony e mount for one of your future reviews. I'm interested in the lens for my occasional wide angle photography and my less occasional astrophotography nights (if you could elaborate on that in the review I would be even more grateful). Specially with its current discounted enticing price of 250$.
If the autofocus is reliable I can definitely see this being very useful for video. Nice and wide for talking head shots and blogging sort of stuff. Interesting 👌🏻
its there a way you could test if a lens is vaiable for astrophotography? like to avoid coma stars at bigger apertures. i really enjoy your vids. thanks.
Is this lens finally being released? I saw a bunch of vids of this lens a while ago, but couldnt find a single site with a release date or even preorder.
I bought this little lens August 2024 for 220€ from Viltrox. A real good bargain. Autofocus in normal conditions to medium low light with high contrast is good. Sharpness is rather underwhelming in comparison to some vintage lenses. But I it's understandable for this price. Most annoying thing is that auto for aperture is easily misadjusted by accident, so that it's between auto and 22.
Hi Chris, thank you for your all videos, it very helpful and easy to understand for. I have a question. What's the difference when I increase the sharpness in the camera and when stopdown F?

In the event that Chris doesn't respond: My guess is that the release of this lens was pushed back and Viltrox asked for the video to be delayed to tie in with the arrival of the lens in stores. It was previously expected in mid February, I believe.
Nice video as always! I saw it twice, but still need help. I have the Sony 28f2.0 at the moment, but after the last trip I've noticed that at night f2.0 isn't suficient and the autofocus is blind at the darkness. @@shzammpatapon9865 Believe me, my friend, if you have Sony a7 + Sony 28f2.0 you'll notice it's bad combination in low light situations, especialy in autofocus acuracy.

I used it with the a7sii, the autofocus is not usable at all, always out of focus, in video also it’s not usable, too slow focusing + impossible to get the focus point even in the normal light, sometimes it works with the super bright conditions. Not recommended at all!
I wish Viltrox will make this 24mm f1.8 for Nikon Z Mount. Nikon Z series is fantastic camera but very limited lens choices and very expensive native lenses.
I think they've made significant improvements in handling chromatic aberration. Their previous lens had plenty of CA in the corners even when stopped down to f/4+. In this lens it's barely visible even at f/1.8. I can also see sharpness has improved a little bit...
It looks solid when you broke and want more bokeh (as me right now). Though I would love weather sealing, it is just nicely cheap to grab. Now i have samyang 24mm f2.8 but may change to this. Well I don t know why manufacturers insist on making wide angles with these apertures… which is useful less than 5% of the time. According to me they should produce slower ones (F2.8) with better quality in the angles for half of the price. When you say 450 $ is cheap… yes if you compare it to the unaffordable GM Sony lenses , but it s still a f… amount of money for a fixed lens :(.
Z needs all the Viltrox AF lenses (aside from the 85 which we already have). Nikon's lenses are outstanding, but most are too pricey for the average Z5 or Z50 buyer.
That is a really weird distortion pattern. The closest lens I have to this is an old 1990s K-mount zoom, 25 f2.8, and while this does look sharper, it's not by much. Would still hope for more for $400, in my opinion.

Have you considered **also** showing images with software / in-camera image corrections applied? Ultimately, users will probably use those corrections if they're available, and how well they work (if used by a photographer) must make part of a buying decision; in some senses correction software is as much a part of the "lens package" as is hardware. (Indeed, one day we might see lenses with software built-in to perform image corrections, rather than seeing lens image correction being done in-camera or in post-processing. Should that day come, the distinction between software and hardware will become purely semantic. Already in fact, one appraises a lens's autofocus performance as good or bad, but that assessment assumes a great deal in positing that the focusing performance is unconnected to the camera.) Leaving aside user-created correction files, seeing the potential of a lens assisted by available software best reflects the lens's abilities.
