THANK YOU for mentioning the 28-200 Tamron. Literally the best value lens IMO. It is so good for the money. I needed a long lens to take to Africa on a trip, picked this one up, and it is now my go-to lens for anything run and gun. Wide and fast when you need it. And 5.6 aperture at 200mm is not bad at all. And with great ISO performance with dual gain cameras these days, you can just set to F5.6 and then the aperture sticks through the range if that is a hang up for you. The versatility is through the roof with this lens. If you are walking into a situation where you can't plan, take your time, and control all your shots (public events, travel, docu work) and need range, this lens has what it takes to get you the shot. You can ALWAYS get the shot. It might not be the best the shot could be if you used a different lens, but you don't miss the shot because you need to change lenses. Or didn't have the money to get the "best" lens.
I second that opinion plus will mention that it has good close focusing ability so really is a great lens to have and has totally replaced my Tamron 28-75 in my camera bag as it weighs about the same. Hard to tell them apart side by side. I am happy with that lens purchase especially for travelling.
This summer, I bought it and imo, 28mm is wide enough for some photos. When travelling I visit a lot of churches and sometimes I'd have to use my phone's 0.5x camera to take wide photos. But I think when paired with an ultra wide zoom, it would be amazing.
Just a tip for any beginners like me: APS-C sensor cameras need a 35mm lens to get the same look/FOV as a 50mm on a full frame camera. The calculation, for Nikon at least, is x1.5 35x1.5=52.5, very close to a "Nifty Fifty".
What I recommend on a budget (all of these lenses can be found for under $200, sony e mount): TTArtisan 27mm F2.8 AF lens ($149 new), Sony 55-210mm F4.5-5.6 (used market), Sony 24-70 FE (kit lens for A7 series cameras, can also be used of APSC (also found for around $200 used) :)
Great and useful breakdown of value alternatives - thanks! That’s why I love Sony… is the value lenses. My choices slightly different… Samyang 24mm 1.8, Samyang 45mm 1.8 and Tamron 35-150 (although not cheap - if you replace 24 to 70 and 70 to 200, it’s great value - and has all the features you mention at the end)
Thanks a lot for this video. I just started out in shooting sport videos professionally in Nigeria, and getting quality lens that can do the job has been a serious issue. Watching this video just narrowed down what I need and at the same time save me a lot of money. Thanks Chris
Great video, I can vouch for the 16-35 f4 and the 70-200 f4 for sure. The 50mm 1.8 is always on offer on Amazon and for the money it’s great. I almost moved to the 55 but gonna wait and just go with the 50mm GM(eventually). My next lens….a 135mm. I just love compression in a shot, for me it’s one of those things that really do distinguish’proper’ photos from the amazing stuff you can do on smart phones. Can’t fake that compression no sir.
Thank for the video 💪 It could be really useful for people building their system. It is easy to spend money for the G Masters and do NOT have expected results. Quite often it is much better to spend the reasonable amount of money and just use the gear - after some time, if you really now what you need/like you can invest into G Master for the one specific use case you are 110% sure about. You have mentioned 24mm GM and 50 GM which sounds like a good options for videography and vlogs. If you are focusing more on photography and looking for the best bang for your bucks I would highly recommend the two lenses from Sony: 35mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 💣 Somehow these lenses are not G graded, but they offer weather sealing, focus hold button (I do not like that name) and AF/MF switch. The AF is fast and precise. Some of the cons compared to GM lenses are: only 1.8 vs 1.4 in GM, lack of aperture ring, more CA. Still amazing value ...
People kinda forgot about the 50mm f/1.4 Zeiss Planar. Since the GM is out, that premium optic can be found used for some outrageously low prices. I got mine for 700 bucks. That's almost the same price as what the 55 1.8 generally goes for.
I bought the 55mm Zeiss a few months ago. Got it for round about 550€ and it is AMAZING. I don‘t understand what it does, but there is something special going on with it
This video makes me happy that most of my cameras have EF mount or can be adapted to work well with EF lenses. Tamron is my favourite lens manufacturer at the moment. The picked up a brand new G2 150mm to 600mm for $1,000 (on sale). Fast aperture is always nice, but I don't really have an actual need for it on a big telephoto. I have one of their g2 70 -300mm and am going to pick up a 15mm-30mm. I can't say for sure how they work with other camera systems, but I almost can't believe the performance of those lenses, for the prices.
I can HIGHLY recommend the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and the Sigma 16mm f/1.4. These come in at ~$300 and ~$400. The autofocus is amazing, tack sharp images and great bokeh. These both are in sigmas contemporary line of lenses but are outstanding lenses. The 30mm is one of my favorites of all time!
This info is already a bit outdated. The new Sigma 24/1.4 DG DN ART is probably the best alternative to the 24mm GM, and when talking about 70-200 the new GM II definitely deserves being mentioned. The tamron 17-28/2.8 is about to be replaced with a G2 version. And in my opinion, the sony 50/1.8 is really terrible. :D
@@dystopian.mp4 Again, just my biased opinion, but I found it to have really poor autofocus, loud focucing motors and not very sharp at f/1.8. It is really cheap and lightweight though, perfect for low budget.
Really good video! Probably one of the most informative video about lenses. You covered when/why/how, especially the practical how part, which is straight to the point and not like many other channels. One thing to mention is that you can do great work with almost any lens. I just watched a full video about massive ski jumps where the whole video is of very poor quality image wise, the snow is blown out and the sky is over saturated, you can't actually see the detail of what you want to see, but hey, they are in a Red Bull event doing massive stuff. The whole video is probably made from a GoPro so what does that matter??? It's always the content and the story that makes a great video. Just like if you produced this video in poor image quality, like in a quick podcast style phone video, I'd still say the same praise, because your information is great. So just go for that one which you can comfortably afford. That's my reaction of the last parts.
The new Sigma 24mm f1.4. Almost identical to the Sony GM. Or, opt for the Sony 20mm f1.8 since Active stabilization crops that 20mm to a 24mm equivalent. You gain the extra stabilization while maintaining your 24mm framing. 👍
My biggest thing with prime lenses is just going for the F1.8 primes instead of the F1.4s and generally going used. 35mm F1.8 is an amazing option as is the 50mm F1.8. I did do the 55mm F1.8, but that was bought during the early days where the standard 50mm F1.8s autofocus was rubbish on the older bodies. The Sigma 24-70 F2.8 is a good lens - but it does zoom the wrong way which is very annoying.... I might have gone with the Tamron if I had known. I do like the sound of the Tamron 28-200.... if my Sony 24-240 ever dies (and it's been through a lot)... I think I will get that.
@@therealmarcel a bunch of reasons really… firstly most people (even photographers) can’t tell whether you are at 1.8 or 1.4 unless they are seeing them side by side, and realistically most non photographers can’t tell at all. First of all my congratulation on you 400th RUclips video! My ultimate best lens set will be: Sony 14mm F1.8 GM (or as an option Sony 12-24 2.8 GM, only if you have a boy to carry your lens lol) + Sony 35mm F1.8 + Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8 + Tamron 150-500 F5-6.7. If we go for "budget" then: Tamron 17-28 2.8 + still Sony 35mm F1.8 + Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 G2 + Tamron 70-300 F4.5-6.3 or maybe even coming new Tamron 50-400mm F/4.5-6.3 (instead of both 28-75 and 70-300). If we go for budget then just Tamron 28-200 F2.8-5.6 + Helios 44-2 58mm F2.
Chris, I'm looking for a wide-angle lens for my Sony A7C that I will use to record workout videos at my small private gym and in a commercial gym. The two main things I need are a lens that will allow my tripod to be close to me while still capturing my entire body (when required) and blur the people in the background when I'm in the public gym. Lastly, I do love the idea of saving money. Therefore, I'm not looking to break the bank. I will shoot vertical (IG Reels) and horizontal for RUclips if that makes a difference in the selection. Thank you in advance for your input.
Sony 16-35 F4, Samyang AF 24 F1.8, Sigma 24-70 F2.8 ART, Samyang AF 35 F1.4, Sony 85 F1.8, Tamron 70-180 F2.8. Theese glasses are almost same optical quality as the most expensive glasses (a lot of time with trying, comparing). On my a7rIII or A7IV really don´t need OSS. And specialy one in love - vintage Helios 44-2 58 F2 🙂
i got 5 Lenses for my camera, 3 of which are 3rd party, and i love all of them. The 2 first party lenses are my standard and tele zoom, but all my 3 primes are off brand - saved me enough money to get a 2nd body.
Great alternatives. Another big money saver is also getting the sigma or metabones E to canon EF adapter and look at older canon L lenses on the used market.
Thank you soooo much for this video. I’d been looking at the a7siii lately and it was the lenses that were really making me hesitate. I’ve used this video to really get me started researching over the past few days and am taking your recommendations on the 24 and 50mm and am ordering this week. I also subscribed to Skillshare because of your promo here, so thanks to you for that and to them for sponsoring you on this video so I would see it.
I've had the 55 1.8 since 2016, (when I got my a6100); that lens is a WORKHORSE for video and stills. Now, it gets mounted to my a7RIV and it is still sharp and full of beautiful character on 120mb raw files! Best all in one is obviously the 24-105 f4, best video lens for Sony before going to cine glass, incredibly sharp for stills, and has stabilization. This is a complete no brainer answer.
This was an absolutely spectacular bit of scripting, filming and editing, with some fantastic info about lenses topping it all off ... and I loved the handheld mic as well! Ron Burgundy would have been proud!! 😆 Keep up the fantastic work dude!!
nice video with alt versions listed there Chris. re the 70-200.. i went tamron myself but the 70-300 and have had some real nice shots with it.. as for the nifty.. i wasnt a fan of the Zeiss myself.. and ended up with the Sigma 56mm instead (although i do have the cheapo sony 50mm full frame prime which i use and like!!!) on my A6400 Sony
Used lenses are great options. Nikkor 17-35mm AFS f/2.8 $350 Nikkor 28-70mm AFS f/2.8 $300 Nikkor 80-200mm AFS f/2.8 $300 Nikkor 300mm AFI f/2.8 $1000 I own these lenses
Sony 10-18 apsc is also a good cheap wide angle. with active steady shot you can set it to 12mm on FF cameras and you essentially have a 12-18mm with OSS and minimal distortion. Sharpness is okay.
Awesome video Chris as always! Big fan of the channel! Definitely helps to pick the right lenses... I just might be the dummy one, but I sold my Tamron 70-180 f2.8 and my Sigma Art 85 f1.4 to get the Sony 70-200 f2.8 GM ii 🤷♂ the main reason is because sometimes the 180mm is not enough in nature and I can get a teleconverter for the Sony I can't for the Tamron also I barely reached for the 85 prime for portraits I always used my Sony Gm 35 f1.4 or my Tamron 70-180 f2.8 before, now it's time for the Sony 70-200 GM ii to take over and do everything from portraits, sport, travel, wildlife (w/ 2x teleconverter) street and landscape photography!
"Not Røde But DJI" great plug for a new video upcoming? Good lens break down too, 'personal budget vs performance per dollar spent' is always great info!
In a world of Mirrorless cameras, that easily lend themselves to be used with a converter you can use dSLR glass. And a lot of photographers scrambling to get new lenses, pro grade lenes are up for graps for the rest of us. I jusst saw a Canon EF 70-200 F2.8 IS USM for sale for 500$ here in Norway. I.e of you could not afford pro level glass before (like me) , now is the time!
Alright. Even ignoring the subject, this was well filmed. The walk and talk was 🔥 Lens suggestions are NOTHING without sample footage that is real world.
You have forgotten the classic 20mm G. I would rather buy that instead of 24mm, with active stab crop on new Sony it kind become closer to 24mm. Plus with Sony a7iv it would be either 20mm or 30mm defends on the resolution plus the clear image zoom :)
If you've been eyeing the 16-35mm F2.8L that all the real estate photographers swear by but could never afford the insane 2000$+ pricetag, Tokina makes a 17-35mm 4.0f for about 400$ that actually isn't shit. Sure you lose a stop of light, but its actually an aspherical lens in that coveted ideal wide angle zoom range that actually yields nice results. And it seems very few people even know it exists.
70-180 is killer lens, now with a new one featuring ois, old one should be even cheaper. Would be harder on non stabilized camera, but most of cameras are now stabilized, its a great choice then.
Bro honestly this is one of the best yet the most simple video i’ve ever seen regarding camera lenses. Not even a sony shooter but i’m watching till the end lmao. Good job!
I purchased the sony 50mm f1.8 and i'll be honest the auto focus was slow and would do a lot of hunting in low light.Just wasn't impressed. I picked up a rokinon (samyang) 45mm f1.8 and updated it from v2 to v6 firmware and its been a great performer in a very natural focal length. all in all i'm happy with it for sub $300 (279 or 309 with the samyang lens station for firmware updates)
my conclusion is buy second hand original brand lens as it keeps its value. only 3rd party lens if you want to keep that focus length lens or like sigma in many case perform better than original brand
Hi Chris , i opted for a Sigma 16mm f1.4 & 56mm f i.4 & for holidays & a little reach i have a sony 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 oss , all for my 6600 & never looked back. thanks for the tips :)
Just started the video, but the Samyang 24 mm is not 1.4 but 1.8 and it apparently is better over the Viltrox from the 100 or so videos I have watched comparing them.
I will just say this, if you are a still photographer who will make large prints, it do matters which optical quality of a Lens you have ! And it do matter if you use your gear a lot that the Lenses are of good build quality so they can take some beating now and then, it DO happens. Some of the cheap plastic "fantastic" Lenses cannot stand a lot of use, that goes also for cheap Cameras.
The zeiss 16-35 is really easy to work on. I have a video on how to fix it if you find yourself a broken one. I got one for 50 bucks and then it cost me like 350 to fix it. Saved some cash on it. Its really a great lens. However Sigma makes a 16-28 contemporary that you might want to look into as well.
Great video. What do you think of the Tamron 35-150 vs sony 70-200 for weddings? I like the versatility of the 35-150, but the extra reach on the 200 is good to have. I have a 24,50,90 for my primes. Mid range zooms don’t interest me much. I find I can get great shots with my 50. I like the OSS on the 70-200 if I need to go handheld for other projects as well. I probably in the minority but long lenses are just more visually interesting to me.
0:12 What's the first lens you buy? No, it's not a 24/1.4 prime. The first lens you buy is a general zoom that encompasses the normal range. Think a 24-70mm or 24-105 lens.
Get the fastest and widest possible super zoom lens that you can use in all situations and be done with it. Many of you probably won't agree but the difference in picture quality doesn't justify the costs.
Great Video. I'll be using your links to pick up 2 of the lenses you recommended. Random Question... Is there a course you would recommend to learn real estate photography or videography?
Honestly to me if a lens doesn't cost under $200 it's not cheap, but hey I know i'm just delusional bc up untill now i haven't really found such a cheap lens
@@Flyingjaffacake I totally get that but where I live if something costs $200 online it will be around 600 in my currency when it gets here and our minimum wage is about 1500 so that’s why it’s not cheap for me but I know in reality $200 is a steal

1.8 is the sweet spot for me. They get crazy big and expensive beyond that for just a half stop.
This is a complete no brainer answer.
just found your channel and really loving it dude!
Wait a second. I know that profile Pic lmao
You got anything in a more recession friendly price?
This was an absolutely spectacular bit of scripting, filming and editing, with some fantastic info about lenses topping it all off ... and I loved the handheld mic as well! Ron Burgundy would have been proud!! 😆
Keep up the fantastic work dude!!
Appreciate you 🙏🏼
nice video with alt versions listed there Chris. re the 70-200.. i went tamron myself but the 70-300 and have had some real nice shots with it.. as for the nifty.. i wasnt a fan of the Zeiss myself.. and ended up with the Sigma 56mm instead (although i do have the cheapo sony 50mm full frame prime which i use and like!!!) on my A6400 Sony
Used lenses are great options.
Nikkor 17-35mm AFS f/2.8 $350
Nikkor 28-70mm AFS f/2.8 $300
Nikkor 80-200mm AFS f/2.8 $300
Nikkor 300mm AFI f/2.8 $1000
I own these lenses
Best comment was at 8:20 . You pay for what you get. That is however also true for your customers.
Yep!
Dude, you continue to step up your cuts and interactivity of your videos... it's so freakin' great now!
Thanks man I genuinely appreciate that, having a lot of fun with these edits even if they take forever haha
That Tamron 70-180 is worth the money. Get it. It's an outstanding lens that has served me oh so well from hockey to race cars.
This will be a retention monster! Super pacing! Nice work Chris
Thankyou! Wel see 😁
Tamron 70-180 f2.8 is a must have for wedding videos.
Sony 10-18 apsc is also a good cheap wide angle. with active steady shot you can set it to 12mm on FF cameras and you essentially have a 12-18mm with OSS and minimal distortion. Sharpness is okay.
I have seen photos with this lens and they look awefully soft
Superb Vid Mate! Thanks for that - now do this for aps-c users 😬
Great video, really appreciate the effort, want to get a 70-200/70-180 so will do some research 👍
I am running 2 lenses, Tamron 17-28 and the 35-150, on a7IV so I can hit the crop mode and get out to 225.
"Not Røde But DJI" great plug for a new video upcoming? Good lens break down too, 'personal budget vs performance per dollar spent' is always great info!
Wel see haha
In a world of Mirrorless cameras, that easily lend themselves to be used with a converter you can use dSLR glass. And a lot of photographers scrambling to get new lenses, pro grade lenes are up for graps
for the rest of us. I jusst saw a Canon EF 70-200 F2.8 IS USM for sale for 500$ here in Norway. I.e of you could not afford pro level glass before (like me) , now is the time!
Alright. Even ignoring the subject, this was well filmed. The walk and talk was 🔥
Lens suggestions are NOTHING without sample footage that is real world.
Loving the new text that pops up gives a nice alternative of digesting the content in case you have a toddler screaming as you're trying to watch
You have forgotten the classic 20mm G. I would rather buy that instead of 24mm, with active stab crop on new Sony it kind become closer to 24mm. Plus with Sony a7iv it would be either 20mm or 30mm defends on the resolution plus the clear image zoom :)
what about the 18-105
If you've been eyeing the 16-35mm F2.8L that all the real estate photographers swear by but could never afford the insane 2000$+ pricetag, Tokina makes a 17-35mm 4.0f for about 400$ that actually isn't shit.
Good job!
Really appreciate that!
I've just added the video in my personal playlist. Thanks a lot!🤗
dont forget the 50mm 1.4 zeiss, the image that it produced is stunning
Wow thanks so much for this, a huge help!
Thank you for the useful information. Love the color of your video in studio. What camera and lens did you use?
I just bought a 50mm 1.8, covered a dance event and I have to say I'm mind blown! The quality for the price is INSANE
It's like saying: "I just bought a 1.8 liter car that has a 50L tank... It such a great car, I really recommend it!"
Another winner, Chris both for content and style . We are "living the dream" vicariously through you!
Thankyou!!
Can you do one of these videos, but for Canon ?
I purchased the sony 50mm f1.8 and i'll be honest the auto focus was slow and would do a lot of hunting in low light.Just wasn't impressed. I picked up a rokinon (samyang) 45mm f1.8 and updated it from v2 to v6 firmware and its been a great performer in a very natural focal length. all in all i'm happy with it for sub $300 (279 or 309 with the samyang lens station for firmware updates)
Just waiting on that 85mm 1.2 Gmaster
Thank you so much Chris, very informative. God bless you!
my conclusion is buy second hand original brand lens as it keeps its value. only 3rd party lens if you want to keep that focus length lens or like sigma in many case perform better than original brand
Great video man! Informative AND engaging. Love the editing.
I would toss in the 85mm it’s just epic for street photography and the non-g version is tack sharp and only $500
Top editing, top job. Well done, great vid!
Hi Chris, I would love to see an update after 2 years...maybe before Black Friday? 😊
this options are great, but what do you think about manual lenses from analogic cameras? I have a couple of those and I think they are great.
Need a APS-C version of this
Great video.
Great Video. But I have one question About the 50s. What do you think about the Viltrox FE 50mm f1.8 it’s around 400€ but you can get it for 250€.
Thanks for watching. I have a couple videos here in the channel covering it.
Honestly to me if a lens doesn't cost under $200 it's not cheap, but hey I know i'm just delusional bc up untill now i haven't really found such a cheap lens
You absolutely can on aps-c or micro 4/3. Full frame, new for less than 200 dollars? You're asking a lot.
@@Flyingjaffacake I totally get that but where I live if something costs $200 online it will be around 600 in my currency when it gets here and our minimum wage is about 1500 so that’s why it’s not cheap for me but I know in reality $200 is a steal
I'm sorry to hear that... Where are you if you don't mind me asking? Brazil I guess?
@@Flyingjaffacake Curacao pretty close guess tho
For fitness reels, would the Sony FE 50mm be a great one to have as a starter lens? I bought the A7RIII body but I’m stuck with what lens to get.
Best Camera Lens for Fitness Reels?
What a masterpiece my friend! Great job and I totally agree with this options! As a videographer and photographer myself I love lenses and can be experience! Great job brooo! 🚀🚀🚀🔥
Hi, what 35mm lens would you recommend?
0:58 - Samyang 24mm F1.8
What a timing i really needed this video 🔥🔥
Welcome 🙏🏼
For me it’s all about plastic or metal build what is not mentioned
What do you think about the Tamron 20-40mm 2.8?
That's such a fast and nice video, thanks
Very smooth video, with a constant flow of good information. 🙃
Keep deliverying this quality mate! This video went by and didn't even noticed it was almost 10 minutes long 😎
It's nice seeing a Brit based in America doing RUclips content
On a Lumix G85 what is best budget lens for shooting RUclips Videos at your desk? From roughly 2-3 feet away.
So helpful! Thank you!!! 🙌🏻
Don’t own a lick of Sony. Watched the whole thing. Loved the whole thing.
My man
What you think of sigma 2.8 18-55mm for product photography?
I might get the Sony A7iii I am into wildlife filmmaking. Any advice on which lens
Great video. How about for Sony apsc?
How could you forget the amazing Tamron 70-300mm
