  • I know I've tested this on a Sony camera before but...I was really keen to see how it would work on a Nikon Z camera as a third-party autofocus lens. There were a couple of little surprises here.

    What i like about your reviews is that you always tend to use same subjects and scenarios, which helps me at finding differences across lenses :)
    it looks like viltrox is becoming the main b-class lenses manufacturer (cheap but still good) that we are all looking for. Awesome news, as i was almost sure lenses would cost a fortune on the new mirrorless nightmare!

    I don't think I've ever noticed focus warping before. Honestly the warping is more distracting than normal breathing.

    • @PkmX
      @PkmX 2 года назад +6

      Given the really strange distortion behavior, it feels like the focus warping could be the result of applying an incorrect distortion calibration profile.

      Wrong info. Read Abdons comment
      (they do. But they basically build ef lenses with a built in adapter if I'm not mistaken. And some manufacturers won't adapt their lenses unless they have the actual mount protocol)

    • @AbdonPhirathon
      @AbdonPhirathon 2 года назад +1

      @@maxmuenchow No, the lenses that Samyang and Yongnuo are making are redesigned mirrorless lenses. They both reversed-engineered the RF protocol, and they’re not even big players in the third party lens arena. If Sigma, Tamron and the others aren’t reverse-engineering the RF protocol is because they have other priorities, and not because they don’t have access to the RF protocol.

    With these lenses, and any third party lenses, at least when it comes compared to the OEM Z lenses, things like distortion are probably going to be comrpomises. Of course with good RAW processing software (or something like Photoshop) you might be able to correct the pincushion distortion, but it is a little disappointing but the lens is about half of what the Nikon version is so there is some legit reasons to still get the Viltrox.
    It would be nice, though, if we could see side-by-side comparisons with the Z version (I know others, like Matt Granger) will sometimes do this, but I know each person's channel is different of course (not knocking you for this but it does give us a point of reference to work from, with visual examples). For example, I'm considering getting a 24mm 1.8 lens but woulid like to see some side-by-side comparisons between the options for Z (which as far as I know, in terms of AF, it's this and the Nikon Z lens).

    • @adamstrachn
      @adamstrachn 2 года назад

      I agree about the distortion compromise. I don't mind much,especially at that price. I always run everything through Lightroom so it's rather easy to deal with any distortion/vignetting issues.

    Hey there Christopher, there is a Tamron lens that I have been looking at, the 35-150mm f/2.8-4. I was surprised to see that this is not a lens you have yet tested!
    After watching for so long, and having your reviews as comprehensive as they are, I have factored your recommendations in heavily before purchasing the set of glass that I currently own. I feel as though I cannot sign off on this purchase without your stamp of approval.
    This may be an exciting time to review this lens, because if the rumors are true, Tamron have in the works a brighter f/2-2.8 version of this lens. I wonder if it’s worth it to wait.

      I do feel that mirror lens is getting neglected now, with a new coating, they perform very well. They actually do have a lot of potential, especially on mirrorless camera. I have that particular lens and it was great on my G85 + 0.71x Speedbooster. They are introducing a new lens soon, the 500mm f8 version of that.
