That screen is of no use because it shows the wrong distance. And the edges of the lens when the aperture is opened are terrible. I returned it. The weight is 650g, which is a lot.
@@shaggywagshaggywag WELL SAID a lot of Garbage spouted against Nikon by a large Number of USA reviewers . The Nikon 20mm S is the best Astro Lens ever made. I want wider so looking at this for my Z8. But I guess any Jpeg Shooter would say/write these things
@@Mr09260 After that statement, I instantly remembered why I stopped reading his reviews. I don’t care what brand you prefer, both have excellent products, but to make an idiotic statement like that… Goodbye again!
Agreed, I can do without it, but if you're going to do it, do it like this and not the foolish window dressing Nikon did. I remember the old days when Nikon was number one.
Simply looking at lenses from 50 years ago shows us ergonomics done right. I’m more disenchanted how today lens makers, in the name of making things different and new, make products worse. Thanks!
So Ken, I just ordered this lens BEFORE I saw your review to use with my Z5 that I bought as a result of your review. You are not usually kind to third party lenses, so after watching this review I think I made an excellent choice.
How would this stack up against the Nikon 20mm primes in terms of image quality? I'm looking for a fast wide-angle for mainly astro (for other landscape/lowlight use as well) and I'm struggling to deciding between this (~$600), the 20mm 1.8G ($600 w/FtZ adapter) and the 20mm 1.8S at $900 (a bit over budget). What would you do in my situation?
I’d ask if you want 16 or 20mm. Z20 has best optics of all. 20G is close. This 16mm is third optically, but is built much tougher and the only one that can be preset to infinity.
Hi Ken, nice Viltrox lens and well built, and the images are great and the colours. Does that Blue display have a Focus to infinity icon, maybe it's a silly question 😂. Great to watch another one of your videos. 😊
The display has a black background; looks blue here due to my crappy cinematography. There’s a clear and precise infinity mark on the LCD for manual focus, and here’s how to program the Fn2 button to focus to infinity kenrockwell.com/tech/viltrox/16mm-f18.htm#preset
Received mine two days ago (for Sony), and it is an awesome lens. But the lens connection to a MAC and PC does not work at all and I needed to return it for an exchange. Per Viltrox, there is something wrong with an internal circuit. This may be rare, since I could not find anyone else having the same issue. The lens-to-computer function is only important if upgrading firmware is important to you.
You have no idea how much I miss being able to change the ratio of f/stop : speed by simply turning the control wheel on newer cameras! Why have manufacturers allowed that to go the way of the dodo? If I’m not mistaken, Nikon only allows it on the Z8 if one disables auto ISO.

Because I’m in dim light and shoot at ISO 100 and below when I can to get the sharpest results. ISO 200 and above gets softer, which therefore doesn’t show what the lens actually does.
Don't even care about this lens, just here to hear what Ken thinks about it. Thanks Ken, been using your website for over 2 decades now.
AWESOME!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
I am shocked that such a versatile digital screen was implemented by a third party lensmaker first, much less a Chinese brand. Bravo Viltrox.
Exactly. Hope Nikon can get its act together, but I gave up and moved to Canon around 2012. I vote with my dollars rather than wait. Thanks!

I really like the focusing distance scale exhibited on this lens. It is 2024; every manufacturer should include this sort of design.

Loving the metal construction of a lot of these lenses!

Thank you Viltrox thinks of every detail down to the raised red dot so you can feel it in the dark.

Got me there. The last thing I want to do is hook a lens to a computer. Thanks!
Ken, you're a legend, but some modern plastics are really good materials. Not at plastic is the same. Thanks for all your awesome work!
Plastic is good for insulators, not lens barrels. Thanks!
Is a good buy compared to the Nikon 20mm 1.8 ? I am a wedding photography , wanting to invest in a wide angle for my z6
It is a good buy, half the price. Optics not quite as good, but wider, better built and with more controls. Thanks!
Great video! Can you do Viltrox 85mm 1.8?! Also waiting for the Z6III video!
I have AstrHori 85/1.8. Worth what you pay for it; iffy optics in a metal AF mount.
Like the metal construction of these lenses. In these modern days of everything plastic, it’s nice to pick up a solid metal lens.
Me too. Solid build, solid optics, fn buttons and lightweight price sold me.

A lot of people have reported that the distance measurement scale in the LCD screen is way off the mark and basically inaccurate and unusable.
Mine works fine - but the in-finder display in my Z8 is way off. The one on the lens is fine.
