I don’t think Alicent requested Rhaenyra come with the baby; she just requested to see the baby right away so she could pass judgement on whether it was another bastard. Rhaenyra going with was a power move to control the situation.

I can’t deny that I think this episode should’ve been split up into either two, or one that was 90 minutes long. We needed more development in the Rhaenyra/Harwin relationship as well as the Daemon/Leana relationship (and Daddy Daemon). I would’ve enjoyed being able to settle into those relationships a bit so that the deaths would be more impactful. Harwin was the most impactful simply bc his child had just been born and it was so unnecessary a death.

I've read the book & I didn't mind the time jump. I do feel like the storylines in the episode were rushed. This easily could have been 2 maybe 3 episodes. Daemon & Laena's marriage, children & eventual residence in Pentos. Rhaenyra's relationships with Leanor & Harwin, her children, being trained to rule & the issues with Alicent. More time touching on those milestones would have added the needed depth due to the 10 yr time jump. Again, I enjoyed the episode & I'm excited for the next episode.

This was the first episode that I did have a gripe with the time jumps. I definitely felt more backstory could have been provided for Rhaenyra and Harwin and especially Daemon and Laena. Both Harwin and Laena felt like literal plot devices that were meant to push Rhaenyra and Daemon forward which I’m sure is a part of the book (didn’t read it ) but it could have been established and developed better imo. I also felt that the deleted scene with Daemon and his daughters was a bad choice to be cut. Daemon can definitely be cold , conniving and sarcastic at times but I feel like the show has always established that when it comes down to who HE perceives as family he cares and loves for them very deeply. ( ie him telling Corlys only he can trash talk his brother). So I would think that during such a devastating time he would embrace his daughters just for the fact that in that moment they really needed some love some affection .

I don't care that it might be boring, I just want to see them happy together and raising Jace and Luke. He was such a good dad and honourable man, you don't find many like that in Westeros which makes his and his father's loss hit me right in the feels. If she wanted to fuck around at-least do it responsibly so that no-one else finds out or can use that to get to you politically. I’d like to add as well that I’m not a reader of the books, but I did watch all of GOT. The fact that there was so much detail in GOT from start to finish made it easier to understand. In addition to the individual characters periodically narrating stories from the past, we got a glimpse of more detail. However my prediction for House of the Dragon is that as time goes on we may be given flashbacks. It seems a waste to cast so many characters and only feature them in one (maybe two) episode(s). By doing flashbacks, they’ll help fill in the blanks for us more casual viewers. At least I hope so. But I’m just speculating, you never know with this franchise. Thanks again

I'm a little "mixed" on Alicent's new portrayal now, since the most recent time jump. She may look like the same character, (if you squint your eyes lol especially,) but the younger Alicent never shouted or even really raised her voice at all, to anybody, for any reason, and this new Alicent is way too loud and intense.
She wasn't always sweet or super confident or sure of herself, before. But, those demurities I could have better understood seeing evolve or progress, especially over a decade between her being a girl and a woman.
Going from nervous to full blown paranoid is believable, and people change considerably over even one decade, she's just much too loud and intense, I'd expected maybe a little less loudmouth lol especially since she was so quiet by nature before.
She went from absolutely never even raising her voice to grabbing her son's face and screaming at him about her single-minded obsession with Rhaenyra virtually immediately, like she's two completely different people altogether.
I'm just not totally sold yet, I gotta admit.
Maybe it's just too jarring, to see. (For me.) I don't know.

I don’t see how Alicent has any legs to stand on when she questions the legitimacy of Rhaenyra’s children. If the “Dad” is holding the baby and is saying it’s his even naming the baby and looking happy the baby was born then everyone should assume the baby is his. If I was Laenor I would be cutting tongues out of anyone who said that baby wasn’t mine and when the Queen told me to keep trying maybe I’ll get a child who looks like me I would’ve told her what does she mean all these kids look just like me. She is the Queen CONSORT she has no real power Viserys is the king and has the final say no matter what. He should have approved the wedding proposal right then and there. Viserys really is a good guy but a terrible king I feel bad for him but he wanted this. He could’ve given the job to his brother or at least kept him and Corlys close so they could advise him when to be a little more fierce when necessary. Honestly though if Viserys would’ve gotten his council right he might have been remembered as one of the best Kings to ever rule Westeros. I’d say Viserys as king and Lyonel as Hand with a small council consisting of Corlys, Daemon and Otto seems like it would’ve been the perfect dynamic and unstoppable in their time.

It's mostly to do with the fact that it's an open secret that Leanor is gay, and all the boys look much more like the princesses "champion" Harwin. It's just too suspicious. If the boys are bastards (which they are) then they are all guilty of high treason and should be put to death, not inherit the Iron Throne. And because they are bastards that puts all of Alicents true born children in jeopardy. And she is the Queen consort, but with how week Viserys is she's basically Nancy Reagan.

The timing could fit and leaving her choice about the moon tea in Ep. 4 open makes for a great twist later on. The dramatic irony of the whole situation and the courtyard scene in particular would be poetic. Lastly him asking "Is Harwin Strong my father?" is a little on the nose. "Crispin" Cole and Alicent Hightower are two butthurt, bitter and jealous individuals.
Cole has no right to blame Rhaenyra for his "sin". Dude has loads of time to opt out of sleeping with her, and we saw how much he thought about it in that heavy pause he took before he placed his white cloak on the chair. He could have remained her paramour in the way Harwin Strong was for the past 10 years. Instead he wanted more from Rhaenyra, even though he knew that being heir to the throne mattered to her more than anything else. Rhaenyra was thinking of him when she was making her arrangement with Leanor. Cole could have had everything Harwin has, so he has no right to be bitter or jealous. He only has himself to blame, so why is he so hateful now?
Same with Alicent, she was the first one to keep secrets from Rhaenyra when showed up at the small council knowing Viserys was going to announce that he was marrying her. That was a massive slap in the face for Rhaenyra. She was the first to break the trust in their friendship. So why is she feeling so betrayed that Rhaenyra lied about still being a maiden?

      100% agree 👏🏾
I already disliked Alicent and Crispy, but this episode made it very easy to hate them. They’re very bitter and salty people.
Alicent acts like she’s owed something because she lives by the rules and does what’s ordered. Its like she hates that being a good girl doesn’t bring her good. That’s not how the world works. Life isn’t fair 😅🤷🏾‍♂️.
The king is the boss, dragons have the power. They make the rules.
Alicent betrayed Rhaenyra first by secretly dating Viserys. And now she’s paranoid about Rhaenyra killing her kids because she ‘lied’ about fucking Daemon? Rhaenyra doesn’t owe Alicent anything. They’re not friends anymore.
Everything is a result of the Hightowers schemin’.

The time jumps don’t seem really ambitious to me, truthfully. I’ve seen such things done with more twists and turns.
I don’t know if you guys have ever watched it but there’s a German show on Netflix called “Dark”. Most of the cast was portrayed by different actors at different ages. As for time jumps, they jumped forward and backwards through time, as well as across time - certain characters time traveling - and across dimensions to other versions of reality. And, don’t get me started on all the family trees in town!
So, a lot of times, the plot was like a bendy straw and looped around itself. You had to sit and think, sometimes, afterwards about what you just saw. But, it was the best show ever. Very intelligent writing.

  • @imscanon
    @imscanon Год назад +6

I wouldn't call the kids illegitimate. The whole point of marriage was to ensure ownership of any children. It's why it was created. So, by law, any child she bears is legally her husbands regardless of who the dna father is. The other way round it works differently. He can sire illegitimate children on an unmarried woman, but Rhaenyra's children are all legitimate because she is married. It's how it worked back then...before dna tests. So Alicent is wasting her time with conjecture that cannot be proven (esp now that daddy's dead) just because they have brown hair. As far as bloodline, also doesn't matter, because she's the one with the royal blood so it's her blood that's important in the children anyway. She could have married anyone and her children would have still been royals because she's the heir, not her husband. So....I don't get why it matters. If any of Alicent's children weren't the King's, THAT would matter but it's not the same situation since Rhaenyra is the one to become Queen and has the royal blood. Alicent is just jealous because she has to sleep with the old King while Rhaenyra has a hot husband and a hot lover. And there's the worry her sons will be murdered...there's that, but it's more jealousy. lol

I think that the big thing that we are seeing here is the combination of how this entire family's dynamics have becomes completely dominated by open political implications due to Viserys' lack of strength in BOTH his political and familial vision. That with every marriage and every birth and death he has allowed lasting impacts that resonate until they become a constant ringing in their ears. His greatest weakness, however, has been a lack of desire to "rock the boat" he wants the approval of everyone so badly, he witnesses problems and does not directly address them with the authority that he has to him until it is too late. Ser Criston Cole is a perfect example of someone who certainly has been allowed to fester in his role of a "yes, Queen" confidant. His switch in loyalties from Rhaenyra to Alicent is clearly filled with open malice, and the fact that he went from being the bodyguard of the princess to being the bodyguard of the Queen and her children. That Ser Criston got a PROMOTION for killing someone at the Princess' wedding feast feels like there had to be some strong play by Alicent toward both Viserys and Rhaenyra there that essentially forced them into this alliance after her father was sent away. You can also see the echoes of his last words to her, about how Rhaenyra would kill her and all of her children to protect her claim, in how she thrusts that knowledge upon Aegon. The weight of that knowledge and the implications of being wrong clearly have taken their toll on her, and Criston is certainly doing nothing but feeding into that insecurity.
Added to that, a Strong family, with the head as the Hand of the King, and Harwin as an obvious counter to Ser Criston, Alicent was certainly feeling like her own life and safety were falling apart like Viserys. It existed, but it was far from certain and anything could turn the balance. Rhaenyra's offer at the small council, with everyone to witness, was her final "in house" play to force both Alicent and her father to mend that wound that began the day he selected Alicent as wife. Of course Viserys' loves the idea, but by that time, Alicent is in full "Cersei mode" and has figured out how to be involved in every single decision that is made publicly and privately by Viserys. She has become Otto in a dress. She knows that would essentially eliminate any claim to the throne for Aegon, and help cement the strength and influence of the Strong's as well, even if the parentage came out because the child is still the Queen's heir. The Velaryon's are also suddenly vulnerable, because they do not have a legitimate heir in their bloodline. The fact that Corlis is no longer part of the small council, despite the marriages of two of his closest relatives to his children, specks volumes of the way that Alicent has begun to mold the Small Council to her side of things, especially after this episode's events.
Overnight, Larys, completely tipped the scales in Alicent's favor, and it will be interesting to see how that develops and feeds into her role, once the horror of the act itself fades.

And, yeah, Targs are NOT fire-proof (they sometimes have an intense tolerance for heat, but they're not fireproof); Dany surviving the fire at the end of season 1 was supposed to be a one-off magical event that the GOT showrunners completely over-exaggerated and ran away with, and I wish they hadn't because Targs are historically very much NOT fireproof (and that's going to matter in this story, and matter a great deal in the future of this family, though too far in the future that it's not likely it'll be covered by HOTD).
But, even then, the fireproof stuff in the shows has been fairly Dany-exclusive. Jon has Targ blood, he can be burned. Viserys (Dany's brother) is burned to death. Laena has Targ blood and, in the show anyway, she burns to death. etc. etc.
