I think the Alicent/Sansa comparison is a very good one. I honestly think what they did with Alicent before the time jump was better progression than Sansa’s throughout the entire show
Totally agree, and it makes it extra interesting when you think about the Arya/Rhaenyra comparisons. It's a similar dynamic between the 2 pairs

I'm on Rhaenyra's side...but damn she really screwed up. Both her and Alicent have put their own kids in so much danger.
These characters are all flawed, for sure.
I was really rooting for her early on but the Daemon night out and recklessness with Cole started to change that. Now I just don't know lol
I definitely stand by my thoughts that they could've stretched it out more but they were too scared people wouldn't come back to the GoT world and stay for a full season 😕 My boyfriend and I haven't read the books and if it wasn't for you guys and your reviews and insight from the books I wouldn't have a clue what's going on 😅
That means there’s a problem with the writing. You shouldn’t have to go to another medium to understand what’s being shown in this medium. It’s been obvious to me after the 1st 2 episodes and it’s been a compounding problem.

I think that Alicent is more motivated by jealousy and bitterness than the love of her children. She showed zero maternal love while holding her baby early on in the series. There was no nurturing or tenderness. She outwardly clings to self-righteous honor (and maybe even believes it), but internally her hatred for Rhaenyra drives her. When Rhaenyra’s light turned away from her, Alicent lost her mind. Ser Criston is Alicent’s spurned mirror.
There's definitely something to what you say. But I can't second guess a mother's actions in respect to her kids. She gets the benefit of the doubt, unfair as that might turn out to be. Same goes for Rhaenyra.

I think Viserys just really, really shies away from any conflict. It's true to his character, and it's sad in a way.
I'm genuinely curious if there are any show only fans out there who see Aemond as the underdog they want to root for. The guy just gets bullied by everyone for not having a dragon, and hasn't at all shown himself to be a bad guy.
I don't see him as someone to root for any more than any of the kids.
But I feel bad for him because he is bullied.

The relationship with Harwin was also a bit more confusing bc in the show they made him Captain of the City Watch instead of her Sworn Shield, which would have felt a bit more intimate
There was also only two minutes of that “relationship” on screen for the entirety of the show, so it came out of nowhere and was incredibly difficult to care about

I love your reviews because you guys have the most concise and logical commentary. I always find myself agreeing with your thoughts, not getting overly worked up about the time jumps, acknowledging the strengths of Got vs HotD, pointing out any things that could be improved or tweaked while still appreciating all the beautiful work that's gone into the show. I think book readers can get so caught up in an adaptation being exactly the same that they let it cloud their judgments and all
I agree that we could have spent more time with the characters and I get the impression that the team wanted that as well. With all these cut scenes and moments I feel like Ryan Condal really does want to sit with the characters and story but at the end of the day nobody knew if HotD would be a success, they only had 10 episodes and they have done an amazing job handling all the time jumps. Especially when you consider this is the first season of a show, and it's this satisfying. I think s2 will only improve upon what s1 is getting right because they know they've done well and struck gold

Vicerys makes it pretty clear he knows who the father is. He clearly makes a comment about the child having their father's nose. A clear reference to the strong's distinct nose in the books.

Daemon acts different after the time jump because he IS different, the older he gets the wiser he becomes in my opinion. He still does his fuckery and shenanigan's, he just goes about it a different and smarter way. The reason he's always been my favorite character is because of his personal growth, from being a battle commander and warrior to how he operates and maneuvers court and allies/enemies.
EDIT: I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Dreamfyre isn't the one who has 3 more eggs, I thought it's Syrax who has the 3 eggs that's theorized to be the eggs Dany hatches.

I disagree with your take on Larys. He is nothing like Cersei she was for her family always. This guy Larys just killed his brother and father like it was nothing. They weren't even at odds with each other and they were often seen together. Not even Ramsey Bolton was that crazy. LARYS IS A PSYCHO to flip on his family like that with no background of strife.

I'm grappling so hard with this ridiculous team black stanning and simping, and...I am just at a loss. After reading FnB I NEVER would have guessed Rhaenyra would be so loved by the audience. Never. Maybe that's on me being naive. Maybe I should have recalled audiences are always generally stupid. Idk. I'm blown away by the absurdity of these bad takes I'm seeing, but I suppose it is largely due to how the showrunners have sadly framed the story as: good vs bad = blacks vs greens. Don't get me wrong either, there are subtle things being done to show that Rhaenyra and Daemon aren't heroes, but unfortunately I think the audience needs their hand held on this point because they are simping so hard. Maybe the writers wanted a Daenarys-esque turn midway through the dance so they could shock the audience

Beau and I can be the new Daemon and Laena ❤ lol I joke … but seriously I agree with him as far as not having GOT clones. I was hoping they didn’t try to be 2.0 versions of the GOT cast and I was blown away at how each character has their own swag to them. Daemon, Larys, Viserys, and Rhaenyra are so far my favorite to watch.

My only complaint - This Episode, because of the time jump, should have been the longest episode. It should have been 1.5 hours long. I didnt need a full episode. But #JusticeForTheActressThatPlaysLeana - she was so beautiful, a good actress and the one other perswon that Daemon would respect and LOVE. He is in love with Rhaenyra, But he did LOVE Leana also. I have alsways said Daemon is a FAMILY MAN. True family and the Dragon bloodline is sacred and precious to him, more than anyone. And I wonder if Daemon knows the secret. Why was he reading so much? What was he reading? The scene of him teaching his daughter, really captured him, for me. They cut it to avoid racist backlash and its a shame.
*Alicent is inexcusable. It was REBELLION, the moment her father talked about Rhaenyra's removal, at the hunt. LONG BEFORE Rheanyra lost her V card or had a baby. Alicent is not innocent. I( understand her fear, but every conversation she had was an act of TREASON.

If anyone complains about a difference between the Book and Show they have to remember that the Book was written by a Maester, who wasn't there, who got his information from Mushroom, who wasn't always there. It is a book written by an unreliable source given information from an unreliable source. We are almost seeing what 'really' happened, in my opinion.

Am I going crazy or did y’all upload ep.7 discussion yesterday (oct.4th) and delete it ?
I still cant decide if im a fan of these like. Skit like episodes. Play a setting in the time, showing the hight of the events, But we miss everything leading up to the way where we would normally start to fall in love with the characters. This kinda feels like watching a streamlined crackednotes version of a play.
Thank you for validating and articulating how I’ve felt since almost day 1. The writing in this series is off. I’ve never read the books but I heard the book for this isn’t really a narrative but more like a history, so maybe that’s why these characters don’t seem fleshed out. There have been too many times where I’m watching the after the episode commentary by the directors and writers and show creators and have been thrown off by what they’re saying because it doesn’t match what they showed on screen. I hope they fix the writing because I want to really love this.

Great episode as always guys... It was likeable episode but confused by time jump, actor changes, and many of the character arcs. Many of the characters seemed to be pushed beyond their depths far to quickly without explanation in regards. Ten years is a lot and just doesn't seem like you can get here from there imo...
Whilst I am enjoying the show and always look forward to it every week I'm not as invested as I was hoping to be... that's my only issue with the show atm, I'm not sure who to root for...

Alicent was repeatedly told by Viserys that Rhaenyra is his heir. He’s repeated this even after the births of his children with Alicent. She is usurping the throne. So yeah, it’s understandable that people might not like her. And she’s doing it out of jealousy. She was jealous that Rhaenyra was able to break from “duty” to find moments of happiness while Alicent could not.

And yeah, but don’t you find that part of the appeal? She was thrust into this terrible ass situation by her father and then by Viserys, meanwhile Rhanerya got to do whatever and then Rhanerya still spited her for being with her dad. I think Rhanerya is very likable, I just don’t think the show so far has given literally any reason to hate Alicent

Biggest thing I’ve seen is rhytear the queen in waiting has control or respect of the maids. Even the ones that watch over alicent. They go to her first it seems and wear red. Maybe the worm is helping help with that but I think they just love her and father king: goes to showing not having war with common ppl. They love the fact no war happened and see it. I just see alicent maids laughing or making faces behind her back or in front of her. They think she is s joke and crazy but the problem is they know who the next ruler is. It’s not possible in their mind that another is possible.

I also see alicent waiting to be with Christian cole till thebking is dead because she is so bound by truth. She needs the house to fall on itself to happen to feel like she can do this justly but cole robs that spoilers killers the person that voted for rhyrenas you know who.
CGI has been better than I’ve seen on show.
But the show is pitch perfect so far. Epic. The opening might be one of the strongest openings I’ve seen. It felt like the true opening but you needed the story told before. Perfect way to opening with the mins they had.
TBH, I'm not that excited for a Jon Snow series. Now if this can give us ASOIAF content every single year, then I'm all for it. Because I think HOT D will have a new season every other year. We need to wait for Season 2 until 2024 since they start filming it next year in March to June.
It's understandable it takes every TWO YEARS to get a new HOT D season. It took the same for Loki and The Mandalorian and those have shorter seasons and run times per episode. VFX can work on a project for a long time. VFX team is still working on Season 1 as we speak.
I'm not that interested in a Jon Snow series because I just don't find him to be the most compelling character. Don't get me wrong, he's a good character. I forget he isn't exactly a Gary Stu. He did have Ollie killed. He did avenge the people who had him killed at the end of Season 5.
If we can get on Jaime's case for pushing Bran off a window and crippling him, killing a cousin he wasn't aware about to escape, or Daemon ordering for Blood and Cheese, we need to hold Jon to the same standards having a child like Ollie get executed. So Jon isn't "perfect" and his penis is small as Tormund said. 🤣
I just don't find Jon/Aegon that interesting. Now if they gave us loveable Tormund, okay, I'll watch. I'll be ticked if we get Tormund only for the writers to kill him off. The more I think about the GOT series finale, the more I didn't hate it as much as others because most of my favorites like Bronn, Tyrion, Davos, and Tormund stayed alive!
I want to see an interaction between Tormund and Bronn just once. Those two are absolutely hilarious and fan favs among the silly, minor characters. I think we should've got those two in the episode before The Long Night. Swap Jaime for Bronn. Made no sense for a one-handed knight to be in the front lines of Winterfell.
But at least the sellsword went from a lowlife to inheriting High Garden. Absolute stupidity from the writers along with making him master of coin but one I could enjoy because Bronn finally got his castle. Bronn doesn't even have a last name while Tormund does. We all just call him Ser Bronn of Blackwater. I'm still mad GOT killed off Jaime fookin' Lannister. His interactions with Bronn were comedy gold but still not quite the bromance between Tyrion and Bronn.
A Jon Snow series can make me happy just seeing Tyrion, Bronn, Tormund, and Davos together and having a good time. Three of those four are already part of the small council. But I really don't know what would be at stake? Jon's cousin already killed the Night King. Resurrect Daenerys and then what? They live happily ever after? Daenerys was the villain since Season 2.
There's videos on RUclips explaining she was really the villain. But everyone wanted Cersei dead who was the less destructive and more rational character between the queens.
The Targaryens have been nothing but trouble for Westeros which makes me believe Otto Hightower is the GOAT. A true protector of the realm. Otto Hightower, Robert Baratheon, Jaime Lannister, and Jon Snow (Stark) helped get rid of all the crazy Targs.
I repeat, the Targaryens are not really the good people to the lore. We just see it that way because GRRM can make bad people the protagonists. They reigned for 300 years and most of their reign had bad kings (and queens) that did more harm to the realm than good. The Targaryens are the biggest troublemakers in all of the lore. Daemon is actually quite tame compared to Maegor the Cruel, Aegon IV, and The Mad King.

House Targaryen carries the trait for insanity in its bloodline. Over three hundred years of heavy inbreeding, marrying brother to sister whenever possible to "keep the bloodline pure," resulted in many of the medical problems seen with incest, particularly mental instability.
The most prominent example of the Targaryen madness was the last Targaryen king, Aerys II, who subsequently became known as "the Mad King". In his youth, Aerys was initially perceived as charming and ambitious, but as he grew older, Aerys suffered from some sort of paranoid schizophrenia. He heard voices in his head that weren't real and these voices told him to burn people alive because they were all plotting against him.
Other Targaryens displayed highly bizarre personalities, though they were not strictly speaking "insane". They didn't experience hallucinations or hear voices, but some had aggressive, sociopathic personalities. Aerion Brightflame (despite not being a product of incest), the older brother of Maester Aemon and King Aegon V, eventually succumbed to the delusional belief that if he drank wildfire it would transform him into a dragon but instead, it killed him.
The effects worsened with each generation of compounded inbreeding. By the later centuries of their rule, it was joked that when a new Targaryen was born the gods would flip a coin to decide if they would be a brilliant statesman or insane. This saying is somewhat apt, with Daenerys Targaryen's oldest brother Rhaegar having been considered a great man by all who knew him, and Maester Aemon having become a wise and revered advisor to the Night's Watch for many decades, both clearly demonstrating that not all Targaryens were doomed to madness.
Generally, if a Targaryen had multiple sons and one of them was clearly mentally unstable, they would try to skip over him in the line of succession in favor of a more stable younger son. Therefore, fewer of the early Targaryen kings had mental problems, because if a king did have a mentally unstable son he wouldn't be allowed to succeed his father. However, during the last century of their rule the Targaryen madness became increasingly common, making it more and more difficult to avoid having a mentally unstable son inherit the throne.
Although not a Targaryen himself, Joffrey Baratheon's incestuous bloodline is speculated to have produced similarly severe defects in his sanity. Joffrey is the child of twin lovers, Jaime and Cersei Lannister, and did not have a drop of Baratheon blood in his veins. While he didn't suffer from hallucinations, Joffrey was a sadistic, megalomaniacal sociopath, with delusions of grandeur. However, his brother and sister - also the children of Jaime and Cersei - did not appear to suffer the same defects.

We have Maegor and Aegon IV. Aegon the Conqueror was selfish enough to have two wives, both being his sisters.
What a wonderful family! My favorite. Love their sigil. Love how crazy they can get. Love these crazy inbred bastards! One of the nicest Targaryens ever is really Viserys I. So many Dany fans never saw that she was the villain all along. Not worse than say Maegor and her father. She did help save the world. But Dany already showed her madness from the very first time she said, "Dracarys". From S2 and up, she only got WORSE once her dragons (her nukes) started growing. She became like her father and brother, Viserys, becoming delusional with a narrow POV. Daenerys committed more war crimes than Cersei before we reached Season 8.
Also, Jon Snow never really had claim to the throne. To accomplish it, he would need to take KL by sheer force. That wasn't his army. That was Dany's. He did have greater claim to Dany since he was a son to Rhaegar. But he didn't have any birthright to it if Targaryens already got overthrown by the Baratheons. Targaryens are the best and worst House in all of ASOIAF lore. The wildest but also the most entertaining.
My favorite Houses involves no Starks in my top 5. I'm aware House Stark is the most popular but I'm no sucker for honorable fools. I'll go Targaryens, Lannisters, Velaryons, Baratheons, and then Martells because Dorne couldn't be conquered by those dragon-riding rednecks!! Targaryens are by far the biggest troublemakers. The Lannisters comes off as spoiled, rich a-holes. But I would rather live in King's Landing, Dragonstone, or Casterly Rock over a cold wasteland like Winterfell.

The first is Show Alicent. The second is Book Alicent. Sorry Martin but show Alicent is a 100x more compelling antagonist than book Alicent. I don’t think he would be offended, it’s just facts. Which makes HOTD’s Dance of Dragons even more compelling, knowing in Martin's world the good guys turn out to be worse than the bad guys and this time it's not gonna be any different.

The whole 'its been 10 years, alot of stuff can change' excuse is ridiculous to me bc you can just do that in any show and change everything then, a story is supposed to show you what happened and why...that's the entire point of watching the show lmao. You can't just expect the audience to accept that when it contradicts everything we've been lead to see in the first half. That's just not a good structure for a show, i don't hate it and it'll have to marinate, but it's questionable to just act like it's not a big deal.

Probably my least favourite episode but that was kind on inevitable with the time jump and bunch of new kids and characters. I don't see how they could avoid it without an episode that is mainly filler apart from establishing the relationships seen here. Overall, still a solid episode though, the writing, acting etc remains very strong and the new cast slotted in very well (I understand the older versions were actually cast first and the younger cast members chosen to match them, not the other way round). A 7/10. Enjoyable breakdown guys, as ever.

I kinda felt after a few days with this ep that this season should’ve just been the younger cast, alot characters and plot is introduced and wrapped too quick for my liking. Still a good show just a little rushed IMO.

Robert's bastards didn't live in the castle, Robert's bastards weren't in line for the iron throne. Dany even gave Gentry lordship although that could possibly put her place in jeopardy but no one took the bastards seriously. "what does mance want with Ned starks bastard?"
Definitely the big weakness of episode 6 for me was the time jump. I had no emotional connection to any of the swapped characters. Moments they wanted the audience to care about such as Laena and Daemon's relationship, Laena's death, Harwin's death all felt short changed because of the time jump. The actors were great but it's going to take the rest of the season to get used to them especially with another time jump planned.
I don't think they wanted you to care about Harwin's death. It was meant as a way to build up Larys and I'd say that worked.
I agree, at this point I don't care about anyone except Viserys. Laeana's death was sad, but I didn't have enough connection with her to really care.
