What I liked the most about this episode is that we never see Matt Smith make the toast to "The heir for a day". I wouldn't put it past Hightower that it was a sincere, somber toast that he then manipulated into something more malicious.
Exactly my thoughts. He’s a shades-of-grey character, but his love for his family is never really in doubt. He was extremely somber at the funeral.
No he's a total sockcucker
Exactly! They show LOTS of gore and brutality, but then shy away with an "heir for a day!" line. This literally means Daemon doesn't mean it in a demeaning way. He has always been blunt, he said they just grieve differently, and it's true cuz he is a different person. He likes to fck and see people fcking, so that's what he did to take out his stress. He also did it when he was reprimanded with his City Watch actions, he went to Street of Silk to fck. The whores and his Gold Cloaks just see it as their absolute win cuz their fave person, who spends time with them like they are his equal, will be an heir.
Also, I don't even know why Viserys ranted Daemon wasn't grieving by his side or Rhaenyra's when he did not even talk to this daughter after Aemma's funeral. He's beaming with hypocrisy.
In the book its not necessarily him mocking the baby. More like stsking his claim. Also its from otto who obviously hates him. So its never said of he did it in a bad way. And the show, shows him sad before he gives his toast. Like he was honoring his nephew. Also a fun fact is that he does love this brother. As kids they were really close and its y viscerys loves him so much. B fun going forward
Well, the story is supposed to be written by the Maesters so they could be embellishing. Daemon didnt deny he said it.
I expected Matt Smith to be good and of course he was but the performances across the board surprised me. Paddy Considine was the standout for me but also Milly Alcock was excellent which I wasn't expecting. I agree the show felt connected but different to GOT. Very solid opener.
I had heard a lot about Milly Alcock being good in the first episode, so maybe my expectations were a bit too high... but she was nothing special in this first episode, imo. I was a little underwhelmed. But not disappointed. Hopefully she really steps it up in later episodes. Paddy Considine was fantastic though, and Matt Smith was pretty damn good too. I also think the actress that plays the older Alicent Hightower will be really good.
Completely agree ,the nailed the casting here. I was completely transported. Loved it
Well Said!
Milly is so sexy
Paddy Considine always gives an A+ performance, but damn, this is his finest, and it's only one episode.
Wasn’t it just so nice to be back in Westeros? I was throughly impressed by the set designer capturing this time period so well.
This is how I felt. I loved this first episode.
I first started listening to you guys back when GoT was coming out. I’ve continued to listen and watch a lot of your videos since. But it’s nice to be back where we started!
Same! 6 years now and look forward to reviews and podcasts.
Same!!!
Also, the absence of Starbucks cups helped sell the more archaic feel to the setting.
It wasn’t a Starbucks cup. :D
Starbucks cup was the least of that seasons problems
Starbucks gets $90 million in free marketing because of a cup that came from the tea wagon parked outside the set.
Starbucks was my favorite character
(maybe that was a different show… oh, right, it was “Battlestar Galactica”)
Somehow they made Viserys into an awesome character, paddy is killing it so far
he's such an underrated actor. And thoroughly nailed a southern American accent in "The Outsider"
@@kevinw712 He was so good that when I saw he was playing a King in a medieval inspired fantasy show based on European royalty, I was initially disappointed. I thought "why did they get some dude from the Southern United States to play a King on HOT D"? He was that convincing. Such a fantastic actor.
@@AdoreYouInAshXI he isn't. He's English born with Irish descent, and he is a phenomenal actor. He was in Peaky Blinders too.
@@aegonbreakspear9102 Yeah, I know that now lol.
@@aegonbreakspear9102 ye mongrel ye
The opening scene with Ramin’s score over the dragon ride just immediately put me back in the world of GoT and the sheer aw I have for the depth of this world.
If every episode packs as much of a punch as this one did, we’re in for one hell of a show
Matt Smith speaking high Valyrian is pure perfection.
Something I loved to see was callbacks in the costuming to how Dany was styled in the later seasons, once she was more established as a dragon rider. Rhaenyra’s outfit during the funeral pyre was a great echo of the silhouette Dany seems to prefer. And her riding outfit in the opening had some awesome dragon scale detailing reminiscent of Dany
It's where Daenarys inheritently got that from. These Targaryens are closer to the true way of them than Daenarys, but she still inheritently has the class they hold.
They really left the whole "heir for a day" situation very open though, Daemon seemed to be grieving for his brothers situation ever since the funaral and seemed sort of sad when he was confronted about it. Makes you wonder how exactly he said it and in what context.
I like that they left it intentionally ambiguous. He probably said something like “although he was only heir for a day, we toast to him” but it got twisted out of context by Otto and Daemon knew there was no way to explain the context to his grieving brother without looking like he’s just making insensitive excuses. Such a sad scene.
@@kiera_rdh6697 Otto Hightower, a most accomplished gossip magazine journalist.
Well he came back and sat in the Throne and said he was still going to be his brothers heir before the birth. So clearly he was worried that he might not get it hence the first scene in the brothel but he was hoping his brother’s baby was a girl or died clearly
Whatever it was. Otto played in how his character is. He made himself easily victim of a situation like this. I think Otto is a figure like little Finger if he is comparable to someone.
Haven't really interacted with your channel since GOT ended...but weirdly felt nostalgic hearing y'all talk about Westeros. Glad to be back
The scene of the tourney and Aema’s c-section/death was disturbing and difficult to watch, but it really served an important purpose. It showed us the grittiness and horror of this world. Also Aema telling her daughter they essentially are only royal wombs and that the birthing bed is their battlefield. They showed us exactly what that battlefield looks like. Gruesome but such a powerful intro to this world
Lol, if that was difficult for you then you may never make it through the entire show.
@@AdoreYouInAshXI That was up there with Shireen’s burning. Both great scenes but when it involves kids just gets under my skin 🤷🏼♂️
@@Hay-sb5lz Well... good luck lol.
I literally fast forwarded through it. The worst was what he didn't even tell her!!!
Probably not the show for you.... that was nothing
If they keep up this level of performance, the acting will be on par with the early seasons of GOT. This cast seems great. If they can keep the plot holes closed and stay close to the source material We have a good thing going here. My biggest fear is that it will never live up to the blockbuster numbers GOT did and we may lose out toward the end if the money isn’t rolling in.
The series premiere hit record numbers for HBO, let's hope it stays good because people will watch. The series premiere proved that
The source material is pretty thin.
@@jayc5373 as long as they don't let D&D write it
@@LawrenceArnell - for sure.
@@jayc5373 There is very little dialog in Fire and Blood, and what Dialogue is quoted is pretty cringe. It sounds more like American middle schoolers than medieval nobles being recorded by professional scribes.
I think it’s also important to note that GRRM made reference to the Targs having this prophecy BEFORE S8 happened on the show. It has been floating around the fandom for years
Hope the algorithm remembers this is the premier GOT review channel
Boys. I’ve been waiting on this podcast since the show was announced. Let’s gooo.
Been waiting for this review since the episode dropped last night! ❤️🔥
There's alot of nerd commentary not worth hearing on youtube but I very much enjoy how your exploration of topics is so genuine
It's so good to be back! Been waiting for these videos for ages!! Bless y'all!
Quite surreal that I started following you guys back when your channel just launched with Season 6 content, and now here we are beginning a new adventure!
Cant wait to hear from Teddy! Glad you guys are back! loved your GoT vids from back in the day.
Solid review boys. I hope you guys go in-depth into the reveal at the end during the spoilers discussion. It's something that at least partially comes from George (the Aegon dream part), and some have theorized about it before. Really does change some things. Also makes you wonder about Rhaegar, the ToJ, the obvious similar "promise me", etc.
Yep
Most anticipated review/reaction 🥳
Good to be back guys!!! Loved it!
Syrax has to be the coolest looking dragon in the GoT story so far. Can’t wait to see Vhagar 🐲⚔️
I liked it when he was spying on the council and smiled when he heard that he had no ambition for the thrown.
Was he smiling because his brother was right, or completely wrong. It’s wonderfully unclear.
I like that they do scenes like that, leaving it ambiguous for the viewers.
I appreciate the ambiguity about whether or not daemon said "heir for a day". In the book, as with everything else, it's unclear weather he actually did say that or whether Otto merely planted the rumor that he did and uses it as a way to have daemon sent away. In not letting us see whether he said it or not in the show, they get to keep the ambiguity intact
really liked the Gold Cloaks doing work and the Argument between Daemon and Viserys.
but man that Tournament was a Highlight,That POV of a Jouster was amazing.
did anybody notice that Daemon not only injured Otto Hightower's Heir, but then had Alicent Hightower give him her Favor in front of Her Father?
that's a Cold Move right there 😆
Also King Viserys by Paddy Constantine is on a whole new level compared to the Books.
Daemon sliding down the Joust Barrier after being hit is an amazing Visual.
Alicent's empathy for Viserys was very sweet.
Apparently if this is a success we will get the dunk and egg short stories. In the first one of those is probably the best tourney described in any of Martin's work. It's a 3day tournament that on the 3rd day ends in 7 v 7 melee (on foot weapon battle) called a trial by seven, and it's brutal as hell.
When Daemon almost got dismounted by Cole and did that "rail slide" while barely on the horse... That was awesome.
Nicely put
GRRM said Paddy played Viscerys better than he wrote Viscerys and that it’s rare he feels a character in the show is better than the books. He said paddy’s Viscerys is more interesting with more layers and empathy and he loved it.
Appreciate you admitting you guys were in denial about the later seasons. Thank you so much, you got my subscription back.

I've been waiting for this!!!
Excellent overview of the episode. It has been awhile since reading the book so your narrative helped to recall important events in this episode and what is to come. Thank you.
The scene where the king cut himself when he was sitting on the throne was the most interesting shot for me. It really highlights the weight of being a king. Also, it makes a link between his disease and his future death. You can clearly see that his weaknesses come from the fact he is becoming physically ill and mentally weak because of the pressure of having king duties. It was so well done.
I really enjoyed this first episode and I can not wait to see the others.
Really liked the music in that scene
Welcome back boys!!! So happy with the first episode. Feels great to be back in this world!

Solid review. It was shot beautifully. Film grain and the color temperature made it its own while still looking like GOTs.
Great break down on character development.
So glad to have you guys back commenting on Westeros again 🙌🏻
This was such a great review!!! I thoroughly enjoyed hearing your take, and I absolutely agree with you on everything. Woo hoo!!!

I hope they don't shy away from the goriness and brutality, chopping of limbs, crushing heads etc. I love that kind of stuff and it's so nice to see it return on westeros.

I love all the political intrigue and machinations inside the Targaryen family. We’re going to see the family split, and ultimately fall.
Even from episode 1 we see a side of Westeros we didn’t really see in GoT and I’m excited to see where it takes us.
Will we see them fall though? It’s set 172 before Game of Thrones and Targaryen’s were in power up until around 20-30 years before that
@@Elcrisso1 the events of the show is called “The Dance of the Dragons”. The events of this civil war will spell the end of both heads of the Targaryen dynasties, and will lead to the extinction of dragons. The events here impact so much of what happens in GoT.
@@RangerHouston So there’s going to be time jumps?
@@Elcrisso1 yeah, right now Rhaenera is a young woman. There will be a time jump to her in her mid 20’s as Queen as the dance of the dragons continues.

Oh god feels good to be back, I had my doubts about this new series. Only the first 10 minutes need it to shut my mouth completely. Hype is real
what is hype can never die
I’m just here to say that I’m stunned at the quality of this first episode. Everything action, acting, story, photography and visuals and music .
Rhaenyra would not have passed down the message to Aegon at the end. It would probably be lost until Rhaegar came across it in a text, explaining his quest to produce the Prince who was promised.
Or maybe Bloodraven comes across it through the Wierwood network and then manages to pass it on to Rhargar?
@@magister343 It's already mentioned somewhere that Rhaegar round the prophecy through research, and then dedicated his life to learning how to fight.
I died when you guys showed Kim Wexler crying for GoT Season 8
The intro was great, but the final word edit in the outro is what really got me
Feels good to be back boys
That intro is gold!
The Hand of the King has no desire to make the Princess the Queen. He only does that to drive Damon out and to place his daughter as the new Queen
Exactly this. It's interesting how the scene about what Damon said plays out. We as the audience never actually hear him say it. As he's beginning to mention the death of the baby and the Queen, it cuts to Hightower telling the king what happens. Even if we are to presume he said it because he doesn't deny it when asked- that also could be read as him disappointed in his brother believing the rumors.
A big part of the text is even when we are reading it, we really don't know what the truth is. It's written from the perspective of a person that cites two extremely deviating sources.
@@ThatAnimalBlundetto I do think he said it but I don't think he said it in a mocking way but in like a sorrowful kind of way, obviously Otto Hightower is twisting it.
@@manvirshergill1739 yeah that would make more sense- the tone and context being different.
This is the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. This intro is EVERYTHING! SO glad I blew that other podcast off for this. LOL

Finally a review that isn’t negative just because it’s become cool to hate.
Agreed. No click bait here. They did a good job.
I forgot the crazy volume difference in your videos
I’m glad you spent time on the Aemma scene, but the important person in that room isn’t Viserys making a decision. It’s the woman spending her last moments held down and cut open against her will. It’s her experience and POV we should focus on… both for the horror of it and the threat it poses for the protagonist and every other woman in that world.
Give it a rest. That’s totally missing what is going on in that scene. Try rewatching it without ur woke glasses on.
@@elaineleonard9526 the entire point of that scene is to highlight how women are disposed of to provide babies that don’t survive half the time. GRRM continuously uses that theme in his works. Sorry if it went over your head

so glad to be back and going to binge all your hotd content now :) happy to see you guys are still doing this
Loved the intro lol
I hope we get to see more of the tiny golden fist at the point of Daemon's lance
Aemma was fully awake. It wasn't HIS decision to make at all. Some people see it as a tragedy for Viserys to "make a hard decision". No. It was brutal violence against Aemma. It's HER tragedy.
She had taken some opium
Absolutely agree. It even sounds gross to refer to it as a "birth scene." It was a MURDER scene, a scene of torture and horrific assault that happened to result in a birth.
the high level dialogue is back 🙌
First time getting to watch good thrones as it airs, and I’m reviewing it myself. Hyped
Really enjoyed the first episode. Obviously in Westeros, but this doesn't feel like GoT (as in the original show). I really hope this gives you guys some more views. I love your channel and have been watching for years. You deserve the old school views regardless of the content. Cheers
I think they did a great job of using names in their dialogue so that we can connect who's who.
