7:58 King Viserys said that because Balerion was Born in Valyria, Vhagar hatched from a dragon egg on Dragonstone.
@@tkail693 INTERESTING❣️😂
The highlight of the show for me so far has been the dialogue. we’re back in the mode where almost every conversation feels significant. that’s when GOT was at its strongest so i hope it continues through the whole season
For real , it has been absolutely fantastic so far. Long may it continue
Yes, during the first 2 eps I've paused to admire the writing and dialogue. Feels exactly like Got Seasons 1-4 but with the polish of later seasons.
I think that’s something to really appreciate as the book has no dialogue so the writers room really worked hard to give us such good writing
the last 4 seasons of got really did a damage to fans. d&d might need an award for that. this show is gonna be great. it has complete source material unlike got.
I dont think the dialog is even remotely as good as GOT early seasons...its too fast paced and the actors are too flat.
Ah yes, Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon - the only shows where not marrying the 12 year old girl is a BAD decision
lol tru
I'm kinda dreading the time jump given that I've grown attached to Milly's Rhaenyra
Same
Agreed
Exactly how I feel. I hope they can keep Milly with flashbacks
She has been killing that role.
I’m genuinely prayyyyyyyying I can get with the new rhaenyra cuz I love this one so much too 😭😭😭😭😭
I throughly enjoyed that Rhaenyra flexed the use of her dragon in this episode, she was so poise when dealing with Daemon, really great acting overall.
I mean I respect the show of strength but Caraxes would’ve actually shredded Syrax into a million pieces. It’s pretty obvious that she only arrived with Syrax because she knows Daemon loves her, she even had a innocent little smile after he left and tossed the egg to her because it confirmed further for her that he cares.
If Daemon was actually a threat, and she thought even for one second that he would hurt her or has ever wanted to hurt her she would never have went to Dragonstone.
@@Ivbo I agree with you 100%, I think what actually was happening is that Rhaenyra flew to dragstone as a show of strength to the kings-hand & envoy because they had disregarded her in the council meeting; additionally it provided at opportunity to deescalate tension with her uncle (threat or no threat).
Fun fact. I’m a nurse and we still use maggots to debride wounds. I’ve placed them before. I was horrified at first, but they eat dead tissue and leave the healthy tissue. But it’s not a bucket of them like that. It’s very small amounts.
That’s really cool, I had so many questions, main one being, is this real? So thanks 🙏🏽
And leeches
Saw a procedure done online from back in 06. They were able to save a diabetic from amputation because they applied a poultice of maggots that stripped away the necrotic tissue. Foot didn't look good as new after the whole thing, but some scarring is preferable to losing a foot, I'd say.
They'd have to amputate my shit, couldn't do it
@@justinlacek1481 lmao
Daemon taking the egg and leaving that note was such a dick move, but I couldn’t help but appreciate it. The balls this dude has
He is something, that’s for sure 😆 I sort of wish they’d go the magic route one day and do a season featuring Bloodraven and Shiera sea star
He's a dragon rider so can get away with alot
I loved how he chunked the egg at Rhaenyra 🤣
@@JamieBarrington Chunk
He is the prince targeryen he knows his brother love him wouldn't do anything to him
This episode was even better than the first. That opening intro just brought me back to the days when Game of Thrones was at the top of its game
Agree, this episode got the pendulum rocking! So so on the intro in my opinion, but I s to lol like the music and am glad we get it again!
@@KatieLHall-fy1hw It was definitely the music that got me too.
Exactly!!
Happy to see peak GoT too. But the intro song I'm not into. I liked the targaryen theme in the first ep, I woulda preferred that direction.
But it's a great theme nonetheless so if it's staying ill accept it
I think they should of added to the music or remade it to make it unique to house of the dragon
Vhagar was born on Dragonstone, not in Valaryia like Balerion was. Balerion was the last living dragon to come directly from Valaryia
How dare
Everyone's been comparing Otto to Little Finger but I think the obvious and more accurate comparison would be to Tywin
He’s a mix of the two
@@MeowingWhale Honestly I wouldn't say he's much like Little Finger at all. Plenty of people have compelled their children to seduce someone for better standing and a lot of people aspire to gain more power within the realm. But that's just me. Maybe I'm missing something everyone else sees.
I liked Little Finger and wanted him to win. I hate Otto for some reason.
@@MeowingWhale Little Tywin?
Like Tywin, Otto is ambitious, and he uses his child to fuel that without actually considering her as a person. But that’s where the similarities end. Otto isn’t as clever as Tywin. Or as cruel. Otto seems to care too much about decorum to be truly ruthless, whereas Tywin was way more blunt and direct.
7:48 actually Vhagar was not born in Valyria. The Black Dread was the last dragon to be born in Valyria.
Started to write it myself and then I thought to check if someone else posted it.😁
🫡
@@valipunctro same lol
I'm ready to see that badass granny!
I loved hearing the GoT music personally. It's the song if Westeros. I also love the design of Daemons long neck dragon. Being able to tell the dragons apart is great.
I agree. I also loved hearing the song! It’s such an amazing song & very nostalgic!
I appreciate the saddles. I imagine the riders do too.
I'm so waiting to see the other dragons too. I was always a bit disappointed that Dany's dragons were so hard to tell apart, especially when they were supposed to be different colors from each other.
07:52
Balerion was the last living being that actually saw Valyria. Vhagar was born on Dragonstone after the doom
Was hoping someone would correct and point this out, thank you.
Regarding the line about "Balerion was the last memory of Old Valyria" being an insult to Vhagar, Balerion was the last Targaryen dragon born in Valyria. Vhagar and Miraxes were born on Dragonstone. So yeah, he was the last true memory of Valyria
Tell em
Yeah I was about to say this as well.
Isn't it great to be having these conversations again! This is a quality show.
Alissent instead of trying to seduce him, actually got to know him as a person. To the point that they could be in each other's presence very easily, despite the age gap. He actually likes her.
Makes sense that he'd pick her. Which is another reason why Rhaenyra is pissed, as she knows any male from her friend is an actual threat to her claim.
And she's probably jealous of their relationship and her dad appearing more comfortable, more affectionate towards her peer.
@@drobinson-uo7ic yeah, she lost her friend and her father all at once.
yet in a lot of ways Allisent understands what Rhaenyra wants and what she's going through and could actually be a really good ally/advocate for her.. but she'd have to accept her best friend hooking up with her father which is difficult no matter what.
She may not have tried to seduce him, but she is definitely deliberately manipulating him at her father's behest. She's made it clear several times that she makes those visits at the will of Otto.
@@drobinson-uo7ic Good point
Viserys giving of strong Ned Stark vibes. Being honourable but making decisions that will inevitably lead to his death.
Nah, Ned was honourable and a strong ruler in the North. Viserys does not act like a ruler - oh lords do not want a female heir? My daugther will be heir. Oh, king's duty is to remarry? Sure, but not the politicaly better option, but the one I want... Threat? Nah, let's not play war. I mean, he really is weak...
Why people see being cup bearer to the small council as a negative thing? that's the best position for the heir to be present, listen and learn.
Also the idea of her sustaining her humility in her youth and not allowing the inevitability of power to corrupt her character. Nobody in Westeros needs a Joffrey on the Iron Throne!
The problem with Rhaenyra being cupbearer to the king is not the position itself, that's very respectable. Tywin was cupbearer to Aegon, for example. But it's a position for a child. She's 15 now, old enough to marry and legally almost an adult. She should be given a seat at the table
I am glued to the screen when Daemon is there. He is so interesting and just his voice is amazing and creepy. I was hesitant about Matt Smith but he's killing it.
Why did so many people feel that way about him? I thought he is famous in the UK
@@tamaraaa993 just as this evil guy. Not that he's not a great actor
@@KerioFive oh i understand
@@tamaraaa993 his most famous role is as the goofy, playful 11th Doctor from Doctor Who who like fez's because they are cool. He has some serious moments in Doctor Who but overall he was goofy and fun. So the idea of him playing a dark, somewhat serious, brutal, antagonistic character was difficult for many including me. He's doing great and he's great for the role but, honestly, I'm still struggling with the fact I watched the Doctor fucking in the 1st episode 😅
@@chandrawagner4061 i didnt watch doctor who so the first time i saw matt smith was in Last Night in Soho and he does a fucking phenomenal job playing an absolute piece of shit in that movie
You guys should totally do House of the Dragons Power Rankings, similar to professional sports. Like, after each episode, you can update the rankings to see who had the best week.
Littlefinger was the slimiest character on television. Then we met Otto Hightower.
Bro you can't put those two in the same sentence. Not even close.
The best thing About this show for book readers is the fact that we never knew how they got the egg back from Damon we were just told he left Dragonstone eggless, so to show us it was Rhaneyra is awesome.
I love that people are actually wearing helmets in this show. Also, Otto said "Mummer's farce".
69/10
I thought I was the only weirdo who was happy to hear 'mummer's farce' lol. That solidified to me that the show runners trust the audience.
What is mummer's farce
@@lambro3001 mummers what they call actors, a mummers farce is how you'd call something bullshit basically.
@@JackHGUK ahhhh thanks
@@lambro3001
It’s also a reference to one of the more popular speeches in the books that never made it into Game of Thrones
I love the small council scenes. They were always the best in the books especially Cersei POV‘s. Scheming is GRRMs strong suit
This was a solid second episode. Rhaenyra Targaryen is such a badass character.
Her father allready setting the poor girl up to fail, instead of solidifying her as the heir and future of the kingdom
Melisandre was born 100 BC in Asshai, she died in Winterfell 305 AC , died with over 400 years old..
The show HofD starts 172 years before the death of Daenerys....
here do you think Melisandre is currently in House of the Dragon timeline????
25:00 Speaking of Ceraxes (Daemon’s dragon) he is supposed to be goofy looking he’s malformed and has birth defects. His neck is incredibly long and he has a second set of wings on his legs. His nickname is like the Blood Wyrm or something causes he’s also violent aggressive and unpredictable I believe. Kinda like Daemon lol
He's so cute. But also terrifying.
Episode bought me to tears no particular moment just how good and dense this shit is wow you think it’s over and it’s only half way
Hey guys. King Viserys said that about Balerion being the last of old Valeryia because he was the last living thing to have actually lived in Valeryia. Vaghar was born after the doom and never saw the old freehold
Lords of Nerd Soup,
I’ve been subbed to you guys for a couple years now. This is my first time commenting.
All I have to say is I love your guys’ show and I appreciate you guys in the GoT/HOT D community.
I’ve listened to other podcasts since HOT D has been out, and all I hear other podcasters talk about is how bad GoT was. All they do is whine and complain and I’m sick of it.
Thank YOU guys for providing constructive and mostly positive feedback for HOT D. I get it, not all shows are perfect but so far, this show is damn perfect.
Thanks again guys.
Yay! I've been anxiously awaiting this review all day. Keep up the good work!
The only thing I didn’t like was the GOT theme song for the opening. I wish they had their own music. I’m gonna be bummed when Milly Alcock is replaced with the older (not by much) actress. That’s gonna be awkward cause Milly makes a great Rhaenyra.
Such a warm feeling hearing you guys
Nerd soup is back in business baby!! stuck with you guys during the dark times
I look forward to these videos as much as I look forward to the episodes
I let out a gasp at that arial shot at Dragonstone, along with the following scenes. Loved Ceraxes' wind up dolphin screech, followed by the satanic blood wyrm roar. And when Syrax and Rhaenyra busted through the clouds reminded me of the sandworm in Dune, bursting through the desert sands. Chef's kiss!!
I’ve always been a bit put off by the dragon roars in GoT. When a big creature like that opens its mouth I’m always expecting to hear a Jurassic Park Godzilla sound blast, not the chirps and screeching we get from these guys. It always makes me chuckle in spite of myself.
I’m always floored by the dragons’ look, and I like getting to see the variety between them. And you’re right, that shot of Rhaenyra and Syrax making their arrival gave me goosebumps. That whole scene was just *good soup*.
You guys are great. So good to hear you reviewing Game of Thrones again. I’ll be tuning in for future reviews!
Soup and GOT back. Loving this series so far
viserys fits that meme "this is fine" while being surrounded by flames 😂
I'm loving all these HOTD recaps. GOT was what introduced me to Nerd Soup (specifically Littlefinger vs Varys video). The world of A Song of Ice and Fire is your bread and butter. I'm happy HOTD is better than I expected and I am happy to hear your conversations and back-and-forths.
Has anyone else noticed that right there, in episode 2, was the moment that said "This is NOT Game of Thrones." When Matt Smith and Rhenyrus faced off, if he had stabbed her, I would have said "Yes. We're back." Instead, the "bad guy" doesn't push the kid out of a proverbial window and we have a kinder, gentler Game of Thrones.
Love you guys! Keep up the great work!
Best review yet! The reviews and podcasts just get better every time. I know it’s got to be hard holding it down without teddy! Lol Hopefully he’s back soon
Nah, this is dumb. Viserys ignored Corlys’ concerns about the raids and his ships, then didn’t even have the grace to let him know ahead of time that he wasn’t going to marry the daughter. He’s basically saying “I don’t care about your problems and your family can get lost. The smart play would be to take Corlys aside and say, “My daughter is my stated heir. I agree that it would be great to join our families for the strength of the realm. Let us plan to marry your son to my daughter.” Problem solved.
I mean, the characters decisions are dumb, but he seems like a deeply flawed individual
@@jame235 agreed - deeply flawed. But I’m struggling to find any sympathy for him. The “nice guy” tag must come from the book because he was a jerk to his daughter a couple times, and basically spat in the face of his ally. His decision not to marry the tiny child and to marry his daughter’s hot friend was entirely selfish. ... Or he *seems* nice because he’s surrounded by half a dozen psychopaths.
@@7plug1 the last part is it. He the nicest turd person
Like Daemon said, Viserys’s not good at being king.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure Vhagar wasn’t born in Old Valyria…so when Viserys says Balerion was the last of Old Valyria, it’s accurate.
Vhagar was born in Dragonstone
Thanks for getting it up so quickly!
That's what she said! Ha
Another great episode! So glad we are back in Westeros
I am thrilled they kept the OG theme music.
Was almost relieved when he announced marrying Alicent because I couldn’t stomach seeing him walk with Lena
Him marrying Alicent wasn’t because of morality tho.
Great to have you guys back in Westeros 👍 best Thrones discourse on RUclips 🙌🍀
Nice The Killers reference. Brightside is a banger for sure.
The dialogue is great
Such amazing building up ⬆️
Huge things ahead
I like when they talk in valerian to each other for intense and serious conversations it shows that they’re family even though they disagree
I don't know why but I like when Daemon threw the dragon egg without looking at Raenyra, like saying "fine, here you go, kid, now go"
Another good episode on the right track for this season 💯
Rhaenys's energy was like If you can get it done then do it, I'm just not gonna be cheerleading.
Vhagar was a hatchling on Dragonstone prior to the conquest so I’m guessing that’s what they meant that only Balerion would have memory of Valyria. She wasn’t hatched prior to the family leaving and settling on Dragonstone.
Great conversation guys!👍
I got the vibe that the dragons were happy to see each other. Caraxes made an adorable squeaky noise. Lol
thats gotta be your best intro of all time even with the ad
Take note of *Laena* *Velaryon.* She's talking about *Vhagar.* Laena will be an important ally to two of the main characters for the future wars to come. She's only 12 but she'll grow up and marry... 🤐
I became Team Daemon/Black the moment Matt Smith uttered the words "pack of hounds" and "squalor". But I do enjoy the sleaziness coming from Otto "Middlefinger" Hightower. I believe I'll remain on Team Rhaenyra/Daemon even after Blood and Cheese happens because I think the Hightowers screwed this all up by not honoring Viserys' will that Rhaenyra should be Queen.
It doesn't make sense to be pressured to marry someone else after 6 months so the king can produce male heirs when Viserys just named Rhaenyra as his heir in Ep 1! 🤣 Hello? Then what the hell was all that talk about you messing up by always ignoring your daughter for succession? Viserys chose "friend" over family. He chose poorly.
All Daemon is trying to tell Viserys is he needs protection. He needs a REAL MAN by his side. Daemon can wipe out leeches and infiltrators like the Hightowers. But Viserys is too weak to be a king. A grown-up Tommen. He's easily influenced by outside his bloodline. He didn't listen. By listening to Otto, this will be House Targaryen's downfall. Otto is a parasite. He's already entered Viserys' bloodstream by having her daughter be Viserys' next Queen.
Marrying Alicent means a civil war between Targaryens. 🤦🏻♂️ Viserys should've chose Laena. She's a sound pick. It doesn't look right at that moment because she's just a child, but Laena will grow up to be a bad*ss character. VHAGAR, baby. VHAGAR. Or Viserys should've just listened to Daemon and let Daemon cut Otto's throat. Laena is only 12 but Daenerys was 13 in the books when she marries Khal Drogo. The writers aged her up to 17 in the show.
If you close your eyes, Daemon does sound like Ramsay Bolton when he's speaking. Find a Ramsay scene on RUclips where he's talking. They do sound alike. So Daemon is a mixture of a lot of characters: Tyrion's intelligence, wit, and whore-mongering. Jaime's nobility, brotherly love, swordmanship, and physical attractiveness. Oberyn's wild temperament. Hints of Bronn and Euron in there. And Ramsay's voice and touch of sadism. Complex indeed.
It's all Viserys' fault. Made a poor choice picking Alicent. Or maybe it's Jaehaerys' fault for choosing Viserys over Rhaenys because Rhaenys is a woman. But at least Rhaenys is still a dragonrider.
Bruh come on
I fucken love that thrones is back !! I love watching videos about westeros, it helps ease the pain of never getting the next two books lmao
Balerion WAS the last remnants of old Valeria.
Vhagar was born after the fall, on Dragonstone. So was Meraxes.
Listen Nerd Soup talking about Got 🥰 it’s like going back in time. I’ve missed this
I agree with a lot of points, but the way they teased the song at the end if the first episode and then played it in full for the second, made perfect sense. It gave us all permission to connect the two series and yet appreciate the new portion of the story.
I also think it let us know that this will go on for years. It made the decision the continue feel more solid, rather than just one quickie for a few fast bucks.
I like the edited message at the end! Hahaha!! 😂
This show is soooo good. I love you guys talking about it too...every channel is all about 'easter eggs' and call backs...you guys talk about the real shit.
Honestly every episode leaves me wanting more and to just binge it already. Even though I hate it I think this show will be better enjoyed at a steady rate. I've started rewatching all of GoT to fill the wait time and make it more bearable.
After watching each episode I want to watch them again. I watched ep 1 again before ep 2 and I already want to watch ep 2 again 😅 I also started GoT over last night
I agree. As much as I love to binge shows, because who has the time or patience to wait 10 weeks to finish a series, I think HBO is doing it right by keeping it weekly. It will stay stay on top of everyone's mind and garner fresh conversation weekly. It will also keep the ratings up week after week. I mean, I loved Stranger Things, and such, but after the first week or so, who even talks about it anymore.
Cheers and Frasier are set in different cities, different tone. I love the song connecting the realms and time periods of Westeros.
I agree..they did so much to say hotd was seperate from got and it stands on it own and then give us open credits with the same theme song as got. Its a bit counter productive i think. Would have been nice to have its own theme.
16:42 That is Fraser's theme song... lol
Would I have liked to have seen a new song for HotD? Perhaps.
But as soon as that GOT theme kicked on, I got CHILLS. I’m guessing that was the effect the show-runners were going for.
(Edit: 34:25 ah yes, I would love to see a character who speaks in the southern tongue of the far off land of Texaros)
So far so good! I'm happy with how things are going, hopefully the momentum stays strong. This is a great female empowerment show without it preaching as such, while also exploring a coming of age story. Can't wait for next week.
You guys should also check out Primal, don't sleep on that.
With the song, they could've used more percussion instead of string instruments to give off an older feel. Or perhaps go some new route with a Rains of Castamere vibe but in old Valyria or Targaryen sense.
nice transitions :D
That "I'm from the Southern continent-- Missourous!" made me cackle.
I love ser westerling. He(Graham McTavish) played Dougal on outlander and killed it.
Ahh that southern drawl. The audio-book for ASOIAF I found had such voice for all Tyrell characters. The dude put a lot of effort into giving the regions different spoken tongues.
Roy Doltrice. He narrated all books except one, which they went back and re-recorded with his voice. He's since died. He brings the books to life.
i heard somewhere that meraxes and vhagar were born in dragonstone and aegon only had balerion on the way to westeros from valeria and thats why viserys says hes the last memory of old valeria
Do I like the “Dragon ex machina” approach that GOT takes toward battles? Meh
Do I think it would be more realistic if instead of seeing actual battles, every Dragon-related fight simply turned into a “Field of Fire” style roast-fest? Yep.
But lord, hearing that shout of “DRAGON!” in the heat of battle followed by clips of Caraxes raining hellfire gives me goosebumps every time.
Alicent is still 18 in the show i’m pretty sure, would be strange to age her down 3 years while ageing up Viserys
Where did you get that? Rhaenyra’s 15.
@@ousmanjallow7866 Yeah i was wrong in a recent podcast they apparently de-aged Alicent to 14 while making Rhaenyra older than her lmao such a strange and dumb choice which makes 0 sense. In the book Alicent is 18 when she marries Viserys and Rhaenyrs is 8. even if they wanted to create a friendship between the two i see no reason why a 17/18yo can’t be best friends with an 15yo especially when they grew up together
@@UTFR58 If it doesn’t ruin the main events, I don’t see how that’s dumb🫣
I get Ceraxes is different looking but he's also by far the most interesting dragon thus far. Also... we all know what he does... who he kills etc... when you heard that whistle he makes, I had goosebumps
Ceraxes is the gold dragon right? Are there going to be a lot of Dragon fights?
@@blaubeer8039 they teased Vhagar in this episode. Vhagar should be at least twice as big as Caraxes at this stage
His wind up sounds are honestly terrifying. If I were Otto, I'd duck and cover.
Syrax has the sweetest roar. Cute lil' fat, lazy cat dragon 🥰
@@davidjones272 for sure! Ceraxes was like 5x the size of syrax in the same shot. Vaghar has to dwarf em all

I think I liked the second episode more than the first, specifically for the Dragonstone scene. I’m loving this show so far!
with just 2 episodes, the show has already established a good reason as to why the realm will eventually dub rhaenyra as "the realm's delight"
The Hour of the Wolf has to be in Season 2. The North won't play a part until the end the Dance. But what a part it will be. What actor has been tagged to play Cregan Stark..in the books, he's pretty young...23, if I remember correctly
I don't think he's been cast. Would make sense to see him in S2 so they probably wait to cast him.
I doubt the Hour of the Wolf is in season 2. That would mean this is probably a 2 season series. It's more likely S 3-4.
34:10 well, seeing that we're going to time jump it's possible that Myseria's accent will adjust to a Westerosi one
For me Viserys is much more like king Tommen Baratheon.
His dragon is suppose to be long, they (dragon keepers) called him the red worm or the blood worm or something like that
Yep, the Blood Worm 👍👍
Is he really a BAD King?? Nobody is perfect and going to make all the correct decisions. He has ruled for 9 years so far. I do not agree with his marriage choice but it is his choice. It is not like he is going to get his head cut off (Ned Stark) or get killed at a party (Rob Stark, Red Wedding)
9:30 Otto was absolutely talkin his shit in this scene!
Nah disagree, it’s definitely a cool throw back to have GOT intro music. Makes you feel like your back in Westeros again, brings more excitement and nostalgia.
Balerion was the last dragon born in Valyria, though. Vhagar was born on Dragonstone.
I’m LOVING the season so far, it’s sharp and well paced, I can’t wait to see it grow 🙌🏼
"Howdy, I'm from the southern continent, Missouro" - GOLD
Indeed. Good Soup
This show has the dialogue of early Got along with the polish of later got. Loving it.
