  • Milwaukee M18 High Output HD12.0 Battery - Does It Increase Speed And Power?
    Today we test the new Milwaukee HD12.0 Battery on the 1/2'' impact wrench to see if the bigger battery increases the power and speed on this tool. We also used a XC5.0 battery in this test to show the differences. These are some pretty incredible results! Let us know what you think in the comments section below!

    I'm a heavy engine mechanic and I can tell you that using the 12.0 definitely gives you more power than the 5.0. I was unsuccessful at removing 90% of the head bolts on a QSK60 Cummins using the 5.0. With the 12.0 my 1/2" impact didn't skip a beat and removed all of the head bolts. I hope this helps you guys make a decision.

      It does depend on the tool, task, and batteries being compared. Sometimes the tool isn't getting all the power it can use and sometimes that isn't a factor at all.

      I agree 👍. I used the 12.0 on my 3/8 mid torque (overkill) on some 5/8" bols covered in asphalt and tar and the 5.0 didn't match what the 12.0.did...it was kinda scary 😂😂😂

    Glad you guys did this video. I think trying the new 6.0 to see how it compares against the 9 and the 5 would be great too. Considering the 6.0 is High Output I’d be interested to know if it beats the 9.0 on the original high demand tools like the miter saw.

    12 Ah battery = 90A discharge rating
    5 Ah battery = 40-45A discharge rating
    High torque impact wrenches can draw ~35-40A+ continuous current. (burst current is typically higher, usually 50A+, but that's for a split second)
    if you don't hit the batteries near their peak discharge rating then the voltage doesn't sag as much. Which means the tool doesn't bog down. This is basically what you're seeing, a battery that's able to comfortably handle a constant load that's well under 2/3 of what it can handle in the most extreme conditions. (like on the newer chainsaw or circular saw)
    Lag screws make this more evident because you tend to hit the batteries for a longer duration of time. With lug nuts you usually break the nut loose almost immediately then the tool just spins it the rest of the way off.
    So typical use in automotive means that the 12 Ah battery offers little to no noticeable benefit. Most people don't buy these to run lag screws so that's probably why Milwaukee isn't marketing them as a performance enhancement. And you're looking for a serious case of RSI by adding even more weight for your wrist to deal with. So they probably want to wait and push these larger batteries with their new 1" impact wrench since that thing gives people a side handle to hold onto when they operate the impact.
    You should compare these against a 2.0 Ah battery though. (2.0 Ah batteries are rated at 25A, typically) That would give people an even better idea of how a high drain tool performs when it's drawing from a 1P battery that can't feed the motor properly.

      I have the second Gen 1/2 impact... I tried using both of my 8 year old 1.5 AH M18 batteries on it. Yah what a joke.. the batteries actually error out if I use the tool to remove or install lugs. The 1.5 AH batteries work great in my brushless 1/4" impact driver but in order to get good performance out of the 1/2" wrench I use the 9 AH battery.

    The high output batteries give the most advantage to motor only tools. Impacts rely a lot on the impact. The impact works regardless of the motor…so while you’re still getting a benefit because the motor is able to draw more, the impact part still requires a certain amount of time between impacts and the impact itself doesn’t get stronger with more battery umf.

    HD 12.0 is kind of heavy for most tools. Awesome for stationary tools and heavier tools like you show. Also good for lights. It just takes a long time to charge. I have some CP 3.0 batteries that made about the same difference over the normal 2.0 batteries for smaller tools. (30% - 50% more power). Good demonstration.

    I have a portable power station, 2 M18 12.0ah batteries and a rapid charger. When 1 battery is depleted I can use the other one and while using the fresh one I use the power station to charge the other!
    At first I was disappointed. The power station reads power output in watts. The first 5 minutes it's saying 5watts. I'm thinking it'll take all day! About 20 minutes it's reading 150watts! It charged this HUGE battery in just under an hour!

If it's the high torque, I highly recommend this socket kit for ball hitch nuts (or in your case if you want to do some torque tests) goo.gl/XKTBdM. HO batteries has a higher/longer lasting power curve than the HD ones. Charging cycles also reduces/lowers this curve.......not quickly but over the lifespan of the batteries. There is new battery technology being developed as we speak, most notably by the inventor of lithium-ion technology that will make l-ion batteries a thing of the past like NiCad batteries has gone. These solid state batteries w/o any electrolytes will be stronger, build no heat, faster charging and last longer than what we have today. Look into the electric/hybrid vehicles field and solar batt storage (like the Tesla PowerWall) area where these batts will make their first appearance. The future for a less expensive rechargeable battery is super bright.

    • @boilednuts
      @boilednuts 6 лет назад +1

      Bobby my bro, actually li-ion batts are way scarier. They tend to overheat with use and when not regulated will either vent their electrolytes or explode/catch fire. Electrical/hard shorts would also create the same scenario. That's why shipping by air is regulated (I guess they don't mind if a boat sinks, a train/truck catches fire) and disposal is a concern. I've had a li-ion battery vent on me already but luckily it didn't explode. Lemme tell ya....that sucker gets hot and continues to vent for a while. Imagine if a whole battery pack started to vent....I'd scream like a little girl. This won't be a problem with the new solid state design. You'd be able to use that power tool till the battery is discharged. Yeah buddy, no more thermal shutdowns! Vince gonna love that. Estimated to be able to recharge between 100-200k times, bro that's a lifetime. The possibilities with these can and will boggle the mind. The sooner the better is what I say.

    • @02fsas
      @02fsas 6 лет назад +1

      boilednuts. solid state batteries will and do have electrolytes, it's just in a solid medium vs liquid as they are now.
      you're right though, they'll be so much more faster, durable, and safe since they won't overheat as much. aaand since theres no liquid, the anode cathode and electrolyte will all be compacted together allowing for more voltage/amp combos
      downside though is they're at least 5 years out.. they'll be expensive af when they do come out tho..
      can't wait
