Years ago I had a rental property that had a stove that had grease that was caked on and hard. I went to buy new parts and grills that would have cost $100’s. @@gordanazakula5669 You already know, but it's never too late to repeat it to others: NEVER use ammonia and bleach together. Combined they make poisonous gas. There are other things that are dangerous with bleach, such as vinegar and acetone (nail polish remover.) ALWAYS follow INSTRUCTIONS and PRECAUTIONS which are written on ANY chemical product: cleaners, paint, pesticides, you name it. I just heard that using two different drain cleaners on one clogged pipe can cause damage! Be careful, be safe everyone.

awww, I love that you are doing this for an elderly family member. No judgement here at all! So many older folks and even some younger couples do things the same way. It was how they 'worked' for them.
This is EXACTLY what I needed! Trying to help a bachelor friend of our family that is grieving family member. I cleaned stovetop yesterday but couldn't get down in the burners! Ammonia looks like the answer to me. Lots of sticky counters and microwave, etc. This video was perfect for me! Thanks 😊
I've come across stoves in a few investment rental properties we took on. Being a clean freak myself and budget conscious, I would clean the stove rather than purchase new. I used the same method with fantastic, like new results. Putting all loose pieces that can be removed in gallon zip lock bags with 1/4 cup of ammonia in each bag, then put them all in a large heavy duty trash bag. Leave the bag outside overnight or in a well ventilated room. If the stove is gas, I turn off the gas line (and pilot if there is one), then spray the remainder of the stove with ammonia, cut open a trash bag or two and cover the stove and seal with painters tape. If necessary, protect any flooring or other surfaces around the stove. The next morning, the majority of all the grease and grime wipes or washes away with water. Very minimal scrubbing was needed. However, the fumes are very strong! I wear a ventilated mask and chemical resistant gloves while prepping and cleaning. Actually, the smaller parts that I were placed in bags are opened and rinsed with a hose, then brought inside for a thorough wash in sudsy water. One thing to be careful of is any painted/printed areas. These days most of the indicator markings for the knobs and functioning components can easily rub off with aggressive cleaning products.
@@jayasmrmore3687 I think for a rental, they'd want a very clean stove. That way, they can get fair market value and decent tenants. If it's your own, and you are not too picky, I fully agree with you!! JMO
Something that I've found that works almost instantly on grease on the stovetop and surrounding walls, floor, and tiles (and we're talking some years of buildup) is Goo Gone, believe it or not. It's like the loose oil attaches to and breaks down the sticky oil and turns it back into a loose oil. Use it with a Mr. Clean Eraser for maximum effect. However, I definitely learned something from this video and will try the ammonia soak method in the future for the stove grates and the black cooked on stuff. Alas, magic eraser didn't work for us; we don't know how long the grease was streaked down the side of the stove, we just bought the rental unit; we are totally spent in trying to clean; I can't wait to try this ammonia, so many in here are recommending it, too.

Most of us can't so this is a godsend. I bought a stove from someone thankfully it was really clean. But yes I think most people would too cuz no one knows how to clean this. This is amazing right?!
Ammonia also melts grease off walls. When I cleaned vacant Apts we used ammonia to pretty much everything!! One apt the person was a smoker never opened the windows the ammonia melted the nicotine off of everything!! My husband used it in the carpet cleaner machine!!
I've cleaned the grates in a similar way. But I laid them flat in a trash bag, poured ammonia on top of them, seal the bag tight and let it sit outside overnight. In the morning just wipe and rinse. Sparkling clean! And the best part...no fumes in the house. Please gift this gentleman a spatter screen or 2, they sell them cheap at dollar tree. That will save time and elbow grease on the future cleanup.

Take all the loose pieces including the oven racks, put them in a black trash bag with a cup of ammonia and leave outside overnight. A professional house cleaner taught me that and it works like a dream! Given the way ammonia worked on your relative's stove top, I bet you could use the trash bag method and it will melt off the grease by the time you are done cleaning the inside and hood, etc.
I own a cleaning company this is not a hack. It works. PS it will clean your oven racks as well. Wear the gloves, mask and if you have asthma have someone else do it. Great video!!!!!

Because people respond to stories. And this has a story. If we don't share the story many people comment with criticism of the person for having such a dirty stove. Often they think it's our stove.
@@priscillasantau8853 Hi. Try liquid toilet bowl cleaner w/ bleach. IT HAS TO BE GEL. You squeeze it out, onto the top of the wall, it moves very slow. Leave it about 10 to 15 minutes and rinse it off. I wear a mask and gloves, it's a little strong. I prefer Lysol. 😀
If I could give this 10 thumbs 👍🏻 I would! This is amazing!!!! I can’t wait to clean my stove! I purposely have a black oven because my husband cooks. I work full time and I don’t always get to cleaning (have a hard enough time keeping up with laundry). This is a game changer!!!
I tried this with my stove grates and stainless steel pots, this works perfectly, I highly recommend this it just melted all the grease and stains away with hardly any scrubbing
You can also wipe with a damp cloth then sprinkle baking soda and add drops of fresh lemon (works best) or lime juice and let it sit for 10 mins, or longer depending on mess. Then use the outer peels of the lemon or lime to scrub the stove. Because the texture of the peels act as a scrubber, there's no scrubbing pad needed. The baking soda and juice creates a paste and it works amazingly well! You can also use the inside of the fruit to scrub if u need more juice but I prefer using the outer peel. Hack came from my step-grandma; full of wisdom and hacks. 🤗👍😀
My stove is gas and had to blow the burners (with my mouth) before turning them on to remove the paste that accumulated. Just be careful in the future not to create too much of a paste around those areas. I thought about using a can air duster to blow that area but didn’t want to cause an explosion. I’m sure vinegar can be used but the smell won’t be very pleasant.
For the black burnt carbon, I've seen on tik tok to use Ketchup. i would use the same overnight/soak method, using paper towels great idea 💡 Slather and let the acedic acid chemically balance / treat it This is amazing solutions this is probably why ammonia was discovered/ rooted out/ based exactly for this wow I'm totally amazed I'm here for the grease solution, and you have solved it. For the black carbon, use Ketchup. We got the grease with elbow grease scrub. The carbon comes off with ketchup and works a lite polish too
Nice job of you helping someone in need of a hand. BTW - nice disclaimer at 5:35. Some folks have just never been faced w/ similar situations w/ family or friends. It can happen.
FYI ... That grey piece where the burner is comes out. (trust me, there's grease under there as well). Also, the burner centers also come off. I did this cleaning on a friends stove and it looked new.
I think it's wonderful what you're doing. To make it easier, use oven cleaner on the top of the stove and place Saran wrap over it. The other, use a razor blade to get off the remainder of the burnt on grease versus scrubbing with a paper towel. Scrub Daddy sponges also work very well.
🤢 takes me back when I was 11 my mum didn't have the stomach to clean an oven once we moved in, she made me do it. Took me 4 hours! But I was hooked on cleaning from then on !
Me too! I gave away my 27-year-old stove, and it was practically brand new because I cleaned it every few days; not even a chore, more of a I-want-to-care-for-my-things-so-they-will-last thing.
I recently attempted to clean a stove top that was thick with grease. I scrubbed forever but much of the stuck on grease was left behind. Next time I will use your technique. What a difference the ammonia soaked paper towels makes. I rarely use ammonia due to the fumes, but in this case it's worth it.
Caught your video thanks to the YT algorithm. That amount of grease build up would need several treatments. There wasn’t enough time for you and that pretty much mimics real life. I like the realistic aspect of this content. Huge respect to your channel.
I don’t judge because I’ve cleaned relatives (not mine) homes, and I know that some people either can’t, or just don’t clean that well. I once cleaned my niece’s bathroom, which was originally white. It had become completely gray from mildew! When my young nieces got home from school they exclaimed “what happened to the bathroom? It’s white!” Lol
@ With the toilet, and sink (hard surfaces) I used Lysol cleaner. I didn’t attempt to fully remove mildew from the shower curtains because they really just needed replacing.
After you get it clean put aluminum foil under the grates, that way when it gets greasy again you can just toss the foil and it cuts down on the work you have to do
Yes. That is a nice way to prevent this kind of mess. I also suggested he use a lid to prevent splatters and a quick wipe down after each time he cooks. Thank you for your comment
I'm hoping our new tenants do just that; we've spent alot of time cleaning this fairly new stove (this type still for sale in the DIY store), and just came across this solution; my son just called me, our straight vinegar isn't working; headed over there this morning with ammonia.
Great job. It is easier if you get a small sturdy garbage bag and put all movable parts in it, fill with ammonia, close it up,. put outside and let sit overnight. Rinse with a hose. You can also do the same thing with oven racks, etc.
That ammonia with paper towels idea is amazing!! Thank you for helping your relative!! Is there a part 2 with the final re-cleaning? I really do feel for your older relative. He never cleaned up in his younger years because his wife did that. Not having the habit of cleaning is not easy to get into in his older years.
I recently cleaned a GE gas stove and used AWESOME cleaner. I soaked the burner pans and grates in a bucket of hot water and CASCADE COMPLETE LIQUID. I was able to wipe the burner pans reasonably clean and I scrapped off the soaked burned on goo that resulted on the grates. I rinsed the grates and then put them in a self-cleaning oven (not in the stove I was cleaning) for 4 hours and they came out super clean (so did the oven). What you can't easily remove is the rust that results from the moisture in the long-standing grease. And, also, you need to lift the stove-top up and clean all of the goo that has dripped down inside of the stove. You can remove the burners to make the underside easier to clean. There is a lot to do, but yes, the 18-year-old stove I brought back into service is now clean and since it has a brand new GE microwave above it, it almost looks new even by comparison.
It really worked!!!!!!! Thanks so much! Life saver!!!

My stove pretty much looks like it did when we first got it. I couldn’t believe it. I appreciate that you took the time and energy to do this video. Helped so much.
Wow. Thank you for sharing!😄 So glad it worked
You are a very kind and gentle soul for helping out when you can, it’s very refreshing to see people like you still exist.
Thank you so much🙏💜
@@CleanFreakGermaphobe Ammonia idea is effective. However, l will never have ammonia in my house, it is potentially dangerous!!!
You are THE SWEETEST! It’s NOT about judgement.... it’s about HELPING others lead a better quality life!!! Some people just CAN’T doit all! You are most kind in helping this older gentleman and SHARING with us!!!

Really needed this, just moved into my apartment but the stove isn’t clean &I can’t wait until its cleaned. love how simple you explained everything. Short sweet & straight to the point.
So happy this video could help
Vinegar and baking soda work well
Thank you for mentioning that the owner was elderly and just needed a little bit of help. We should never be too judgemental.
True about the owner. But the other personal hygiene stuff about shower. She could keep to herself.
@@arthurrobinson4644 I thought it was endearing; not everyone showers every day, and she was there to clean; I'm guessing that includes the bathroom on her next trip.
awww, I love that you are doing this for an elderly family member.
Thanks 😊
You are a great friend.
This is GOLD, thanks for sharing your method. I'm trying it next time! Genius. Especially the part about sealing off the stove with a plastic bag!
Im cleaning a stove in a place i rented instead of bothering them to replace it
Tbh a dirty stove is not a reason to replace unless it’s deemed unsafe by a sanitation crew
@@jayasmrmore3687 I think for a rental, they'd want a very clean stove. That way, they can get fair market value and decent tenants. If it's your own, and you are not too picky, I fully agree with you!! JMO
@@taffykins2745 did they try cleaning it
Something that I've found that works almost instantly on grease on the stovetop and surrounding walls, floor, and tiles (and we're talking some years of buildup) is Goo Gone, believe it or not. Thank you for sharing this video with us!
That's what I tried too but so so results or maybe I was impatient but I sprayed it like three times or so. Thick layer....what a pain...

Sister, I am in love with the ammonia! I use to use it to clean old furniture and floors. It made my floors shine!

Thank you😄 Happy to help mom with long haired girls 😉
I mean you can try following what I did. This house in my video was a stovetop used by a mom of 11 kids who had just moved out and are selling the house.

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO- I’m watching at 8 pm and, just text my husband- WE ARE OUT OF SARAN WRAP, NEED SOME ASAP 😱
I am going to set it overnight and, I’ll be back to update 🤞🏾 Wish me luck! My stove is equally as bad, since the pandemic, i had been plagued with depression 😓 but, I’m 80% myself and, have decided to get my life back on track ❤️ thank you for this judgment free zone 🙏🏾
It was tyranny and a bio attack on humanity, I’m still a wreck, but every day I choose to be happy and accomplishing things… like being able to live off grid, growing a garden so I can have fresh fruits and veg every day and storing up canned, jarred and dried foods as well as other supplies like soaps and toothbrushes etc
No judgement, most people have no idea. But expect food shortages.
To showing him grace will be rewarded!! Thank you
So glad I found you. The baking soda and vinegar just wasn't cutting it. Thanks a bunch!
You are welcome. 😃
I loved your reaction when you first pulled away saran wrap. Ammonia works well, for the grates.... I put them in 1 gallon Ziploc bags and fill with ammonia...they come out looking brand new. As for stove top, what the ammonia doesn’t get a magic eraser will. Happy cleaning 👍🏾
Alas, magic eraser didn't work for us; we don't know how long the grease was streaked down the side of the stove, we just bought the rental unit; we are totally spent in trying to clean; I can't wait to try this ammonia, so many in here are recommending it, too.
Do you dilute the ammonia?
@@emmyknowsbeauty810 Yes, yes, yes; and open windows, and don't breathe directly into the ammonia; the ammonia didn't work as well as we thought, but it looked better than it did.

I found that the scrubbing bubbles thats meant to clean bathrooms sinks and tubs works really well on stove tops and ovens!!
I swear by Scrubbing Bubbles and Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Also, Scrubbing Bubbles works wonders on rubber car floor mats.
Thank you for teaching me how to clean my stove top. I've never been taught how to do it and yet get yelled at periodically for having a dirty stovetop :(
People who judge you but never teach you how to fix something don't actually care about what they're judging you about, they just like to judge you and make you feel bad. If wasn't the stove, it would be something else. Don't beat yourself up! I'm sure youre doing your best ❤❤❤

I would of just thrown that stove away and bought a new one. You did an amazing job. I feel bad for the man who had to live like this. I hope he is doing better 😃
Lucky you to get a new one. I really have to use this tricks.
Most of us can't so this is a godsend. I bought a stove from someone thankfully it was really clean. But yes I think most people would too cuz no one knows how to clean this. This is amazing right?!
I've been seeing everyone say use vinegar and baking soda but it does not work on old grease!! I'm so excited to try this!! Thanxs so much!
Just watch out with those ammonia fumes because they can be deadly.
Ammonia also melts grease off walls. When I cleaned vacant Apts we used ammonia to pretty much everything!! One apt the person was a smoker never opened the windows the ammonia melted the nicotine off of everything!! My husband used it in the carpet cleaner machine!!
how did you apply it to the windows and did you use any water or anything else?
For walls and ceiling, did you put the ammonia in a spray bottle?
Thanks I’m moving so I’m trying to get things as clean as possible
I've cleaned the grates in a similar way. But I laid them flat in a trash bag, poured ammonia on top of them, seal the bag tight and let it sit outside overnight. In the morning just wipe and rinse. Sparkling clean! And the best part...no fumes in the house.
Please gift this gentleman a spatter screen or 2, they sell them cheap at dollar tree. That will save time and elbow grease on the future cleanup.
Amazing! I cannot help but worry that stove could've been a fire hazard -- so very kind of you to clean it.
Wow, and we were complaining about a few grease streaks down the side of the stove in the rental unit my son just bought; we tried lots of things, and now we're trying this method; in your relative's need, you're a resourceful person for him.
Love the comment about not being judgmental. Lol how can us viewers judge when there is an obvious REASON we clicked on this video. Lol I absolutely can’t wait to try this on my own stove! Certainly not 11 years but it is pretty bad. Thanks for the video. I subscribed today because of it. 🥰

Looks really nice. I’ve kept up with my cleaning, but have had to scrub grates even after washing them in my dishwasher. Without ammonia or oven cleaner, I’ve been successful at removing burned on grease with a pumice stone.
So nice of you to help out a family member who has been in the dumps. Coincidently I was wondering how to clean our range top because we also do no clean it regularly any longer since our son passed away eight years ago tomorrow, July 27, 2013. Ma'am, I just need to say THANK YOU! I saw you video and though worth a try and now the stove looks almost new! Thank you 😊
Take all the loose pieces including the oven racks, put them in a black trash bag with a cup of ammonia and leave outside overnight. A professional house cleaner taught me that and it works like a dream! Given the way ammonia worked on your relative's stove top, I bet you could use the trash bag method and it will melt off the grease by the time you are done cleaning the inside and hood, etc.

Hi.

This truly works greatest cleaning hack ever
I had no idea ammonia would cut grease like that!!! WOW!!
I tried this with my stove grates and stainless steel pots, this works perfectly, I highly recommend this it just melted all the grease and stains away with hardly any scrubbing
You’re a kind woman.
You are so sweet to help .Very satisfying to watch .
Can we use baking soda with vinegar
I did all this stuff and now my burners won't spark up
My stove is gas and had to blow the burners (with my mouth) before turning them on to remove the paste that accumulated. Just be careful in the future not to create too much of a paste around those areas. I thought about using a can air duster to blow that area but didn’t want to cause an explosion. I’m sure vinegar can be used but the smell won’t be very pleasant.

That was so satisfying! I was trying to clean a greasy area on my stove hood and found this. Thanks!!
FYI ... That grey piece where the burner is comes out. (trust me, there's grease under there as well). Also, the burner centers also come off. I did this cleaning on a friends stove and it looked new.
I use old fashioned oven cleaner which is spray ammonia.

Cleaning os addictive. It is so satisfying
Me too! I gave away my 27-year-old stove, and it was practically brand new because I cleaned it every few days; not even a chore, more of a I-want-to-care-for-my-things-so-they-will-last thing.
So I am the stay at home dad in the family…and I freaking loved it when you pulled the papers towels off the stove!

Would you recommend the same thing for wood cupboards that have caked grease on them?
I don’t judge because I’ve cleaned relatives (not mine) homes, and I know that some people either can’t, or just don’t clean that well.
I once cleaned my niece’s bathroom, which was originally white. It had become completely gray from mildew! When my young nieces got home from school they exclaimed “what happened to the bathroom? It’s white!” Lol
How did you get the mildew off? Ammonia?
@ With the toilet, and sink (hard surfaces) I used Lysol cleaner. I didn’t attempt to fully remove mildew from the shower curtains because they really just needed replacing.
Can I use HCL instead of ammonia?
