Way back in the day, we'd cover the bottom of a seriously burnt pan with salt and a little water. Leaving it overnight. It was very effective. Thanks for more updated tips. 🎉
I also use barkeeper's friend to clean heat tint, and it gets rid of it a lot faster than vinegar. I don't care about scratches too much, so this works for me!
I have an induction cooktop and so cleaning the pan bottom is really important! Thank you for motivating me post Christmas! Pans do sometimes get overheated accidentally! I’m slowly replacing my pots and pans with stainless steel ones with no non slip on them whatever, as the minute you accidentally overheat a non slip surface it is impossible to get it back to what it was. So this is very timely advice! You are meticulous and incredibly thorough in your presentations. Thank you very much, and Happy New Year to you !! 🎉
I’ve had great results from a little barkeeper’s friend when my stainless steel doesn’t look quite perfect. Both exterior and interior. Also fantastic for sinks.
One thing I’ve noticed with my pans is that regularly cleaning the grates on my gas stove means not as much buildup on the pans! Spray Dawn platinum makes that a lot easier.
Geeze...that makes sense. I never thought of that. I have a Wolf range ( the grates are hard to clean) kind of a coated cast iron. ... tks...gotta work on the burner grates too
@ The Dawn Platinum Spray stuff works great on my stove grates. You just spray it on and don’t have to soak in the sink. I do it more often, but it is a lot quicker.
What I used to use to the clean the bottom of my cookware when dirt would build up on the bottom was to use something called Gel Gloss which is an all purpose kitchen & bathroom cleaner and it worked really well. I have Bar keepers Friend so i'll have to try using that next. Thanks for for cleaning tips!
Your lucky friend will be taking his/her pan all nice and clean - I would have happily given my pans for your video (I have so many I need to clean)! Thanks sir for the video.
mirror polished 1018 pan, i use a steel scruber, the most agressive you can find. does not scratch bottom of the pan, wire wheel on a grinder. nice and clean in 30 second.
I really don’t know how you can hurt a stainless steel pan with a scrubbing sponge. I use a wire scouring pad too because I don’t want to stand around polishing it for five or 10 minutes with a mild sponge and microfibre towels. That’s definitely overkill in my mind but to each their own.
You are the best, and I'm extremely picky as I own a cleaning business! I have gotten so many tips from you that I've been able to incorporate into my cleaning jobs, pass tips on to clients, and recommend your channel to them. I’ve used easy off. I used it once to one of my moms pan that she got from the 80s and she asked me where I bought new once since she hasn’t found that exact model since. Lol
Great video! My stainless steel/cast iron/stainless steel set of pans were purchased in 1967 - and still look and work fabulous, using Bar Keepers Friend all these years. Except for the 1 small pan which caught fire when I fell asleep while melting wax. The pan was rescued by rushing it outside and quickly shoveling dirt in it. Pan cleaned up nice except it left it colored all blue & pink. I will be using your vinegar trick immediately!

@@CleanThatUp Simmering with dish detergent seems to be a waste. At least use the detergent water after it cools and before throwing it away. It should still have enough cleaning power for gentle scrubbing of the inside of the pan.
@EllaBella-76 So very sorry for your double loss. My parents married in '65. Separated 30 years later when I the youngest of two became grown. My daddy passed day after Thanksgiving '22. I still have my mother, but hard to know at this point how long as she is badly sick.
I managed to keep an old deep baking tray my mom would use for turkeys, hams or chickens, and I'll try the vinegar trick to see if that'll remove the discoloration. It's only from the early 90's, so still a very sturdy thick metal pan. 😊
The blue Scotch-Brite pads are the ones to use. The green ones are very aggressive and will scratch ANYTHING as you said, but the blue are about the same as the other scrubber you were using. Not to mention the blue Scotch-Brite are generally cheaper. I also use Barkeeper's Friend inside and out for my pan. There is no need to do it separately like you did unless you have a LOT of buildup to clean off. I just wash my pan like the rest of my dishes, rinse off, and immediately sprinkle some BKF on it and scrub it down. I do this every wash and I never have to worry about anything building up on it really bad. All my stainless cookware is All-Clad, so it isn't cheap, but I have no worry about using the blue pads and BKF on it. I have an older gas stove, so the bottom is scratched up something fierce from the metal grates, but the outside and inside is nice and shiny. And on a side note: Oven cleaner (main ingredient is Lye for the yellow cap version) is great for cleaning cast iron pans. It's perfectly safe to use even on cooking surfaces as long as it's thoroughly washed afterwards. You need to be really careful when using it on stainless cookware though, as Lye WILL damage aluminum. There is a some cookware that is either aluminum with a steel clad base, or stainless surface with an aluminum clad base. Lye CANNOT be used on those pieces. It will damage them. Plus you have to take proper safety precautions when using any Lye product. I use it all the time on to strip cast iron, but I have chemical gloves and proper eye protection to keep myself safe.
@@gg80108 Less is more. Rather than sprinkling the powder on the pan, I will put a small amount onto a damp sponge and then scrub and rinse (and repeat if necessary).
Vinegar is a game changer for getting that discoloration out. Barkeeper's Friend makes a stainless steel version of their powder that is also super. I have some expensive stainless steel pans that are under a year old and I notice no scratching at all from a good scrub with these ingredients. I abandoned non-stick pans a while back and really prefer the stainless steel and carbon steel pans now.
I like the liquid version of BarKeepers Friend the best. Easy to use and less mess. It also works best with a soft cloth, and should only be used while wiping in the same direction as the “grain” of the stainless steel…. And they mean it. I had a beautiful commercial quality stainless steel sink and found this out the hard way when in a hurry one day, and ended up with a huge spot of fine permanent scratches in my sink because BKF is micro abrasive (which is why it works so well). I still use it all the time, but I make sure to follow the directions now.
just gifted myself a NIB, unopened set of SS cookware by KitchenAid for a real bargain....got at a thrift store, was going to resell, and thought, nope, i deserve to have this one! going to sell all my rough, used, old pots/pans/dishes in a garage sale this summer. i have never had new cookware, and the instructions for cleaning said to use 'SS cleaning solution". well, i have been looking for such a thing for weeks now. all the SS cleaners sound like i wouldnt want to apply them to a food use surface. i did just buy some proper scrubbies, and i will use your method and hope for the best. i know i will be burning them LOL i am no cook!! wish me luck keeping them as beautiful as they are now!! thanks!
Those scratches are from straight up steel wool 😅 I promise to treat my pans better. The simmering water usually does it but takes a little longer. Also, interesting about the haze! I didn’t know what that was or what to do about it. Vinegar is an easy solution. Thanks for cleaning my pan and showing us your tricks 🙌🏼
I use barkeepers friend cream ……spread it on wait a few minutes rinse the use a tiny dawn swish and bitpity bopity boo super shiny . That stuff is great.
Thanks for this tip. This is very helpful. However, I have been using a bit of chemistry in cleaning burnt/blackened steel pans. Here is what I normally do. Block the kitchen sink and pour hot water based on what I intend to clean. Add around 2 to 3 grams of caustic soda (NaOH or so called drain cleaner). Be careful, it has an exothermic reaction which lasts for less than 5 seconds. Dunk my heavily greased steel pans/ladles/spoons... Allow it to soak for 15 min or so. Drain out the waste water and use a soft sponge with dish cleaning liquid and just run over the steel pans or other steel utensils. With this, not only my steel pans/vessels gets cleaned, the kitchen sink also remains sparkling clean and i guess, the drainage also gets cleaned as caustic soda solution cuts thru organic matter and fats easily. Take precaution as wearing gloves and keep vinegar in standby, just in case if there are any splashes from the hot caustic solution, dabbing vinegar, kind of sooths it. Caution: Do not use aluminum or anodized aluminum/non stick utensils for this method
Try both PBW, powdered brewery wash, or One Step, both used to clean and sanitize brewery equipment made of stainless steel. I accidentally burned a sweet tomato sauce into a pot and it was so terrible I honestly thought I’d have to throw it away. I soaked it overnight with water and PBW, voila, it melted right off. These are great products, but not for aluminum pots or pans. I love throwing some One Step into my sink w a little hot water and I let it sit to sanitize the whole sink. You can even use these as dishwasher powders in a pinch, or to soak stubborn spots on laundry! Since it doesn’t foam, you could even use it in the laundry.
I get great results by sprinkling baking soda and salt inside the pan, then adding some vinegar. I let it fizz a bit and then scrub with a yellow plastic scrub pad (like "Scotch-Brite Dobie". The vinegar and baking soda loosen stuff, and the salt adds just a bit of abrasiveness as well as aiding the chemical reactions that clean the surface.
I learned that the stainless SOS pads clean that off easy and polished the metal. I cooked hashbrowns in a stainless pan and the oil would not come out for anything. One gentle wipe with the sos pad and now the pan looks like new
Great information, Brandon. Can you suggest something to remove the cloudy whitish haze in stainless steel pans left by cooking legumes or plain rice? (Cooking rice even leaves grain imprints in the haze instead of cloudiness.) I've tried scouring it away with "gentle" scrubbers, even soaking in Dawn Power Wash for 10 min first, but no luck. Seems like it has to wear off with repeated uses (that don't involve beans or rice!).
I have missed seeing your videos! This was probably one of the most brilliant ones ever. I actually cannot wait to clean all of my pans and bring them back to life.❤😊❤😊
Thank you! I’ve been wondering why my pans look like they do and how to get rid of the heat tint. Could you make a video on cleaning and maintaining granite countertops?
I have always heated my AllClad pans up, sprayed them with Easy Off oven cleaner (usually outside), let them sit for a few minutes, and everything wipes off easily, even in the crevices around the handles. And then I was everything off with a sponge and Dawn. I will give Barkeeper's Friend a try though.

What is Bar Keepers Friend made of? This product is unheard of in continental Europe, but may well be available under a different name. The container opening and powder resembles ATA, which my mother used regularly, but it scratches many surfaces.
I’ve used oven cleaner quite a bit on my All Clad sauce pan. Every time I try barkeppers friend it never really gets me anywhere. But I’ll try again with a scrub daddy
Thanks for the suggestion. When you got to cleaning the bottom of the pans you used a sponge that looked different than the Scrub Daddy. Are you able to drop a link to that? It looked very effective at lifting the grim in combination with the Bar Keepers Friend.
The weirdest thing for me is why American stoves have the controls towards the wall and above the cooking surface. In Europe (or atleast the northern part of) we have the controls in front of the stove. No reaching over boiling pans. And less grease to clean off the controls.
I've got a real stubborn stain on mine as it seemed impossible to get it off after use and have shamefully cooked over it a lot. Trying to get rid of it now. Might multiple runs with the soapy water on the stove be enough? Or might bar keepers friend be needed? Is it suitable for inside the pan?

Hey, do you think you could do a video that talks about recontamination of surfaces when cleaning? I'm trying to get better about cleaning but one thing that has always confused me is whether to swap out, say, a towel for a fresh one or not. When is it okay to scrub all surfaces with the same sponge? An example of what I mean is in your video talking about cleaning a sink. In the video, you scrub the inside of the garbage disposal (which to me seems like it'd be covered in bacteria) and then you proceed to use the same scrub data shortly after to scrub the sink head and handle.
Great video as always, my Wisco friend. 😉 Can you do a video on resurrecting non-stick pans? Actually, I don’t know if it’s possible to bring a non-stick pan back from the sticky brink … I “heard” you can simmer with water/baking soda mix but I tried that and it didn’t work.
Way back in the day, we'd cover the bottom of a seriously burnt pan with salt and a little water. Leaving it overnight. It was very effective. Thanks for more updated tips. 🎉

Is it safe to use Barkeeper's Friend on the interior, cooking surface of stainless steel pans?
Can you use barkeeper's friend on the inside of the pan?
Really like Bar Keepers Friend!
Hey, do you know an equivalent of BKF in Europe? A couple of brands? Thanks for the video!
Brilliant thankyou ☺️
You can do all this or just use steel wool and be done in 2 minutes...
Though you need the vinegar for limestone and discoloration
Would Bon Ami work just as well as BK Friend?
BKF is amazing!
do you recommend how to clean a office chair without all the fancy equipment like the water vaccuuum? ideally just a cloth and liquid
