More than 60 years ago, growing up in New Zealand, in the days before fitted sheets existed (at least, down there), a women’s magazine had this handy hint, which has stood me in good stead ever since: if you tie a fat knot in each corner of the bottom sheet, it turns into a fitted sheet. Also, tie a knot in the two bottom corners of the top sheet: this turns the bottom into a fitted sheet, and will keep it tucked in nicely. This has worked brilliantly for decades!

Thanks for the demo. For those of us who don't want our toes bent over because there isn't enough room for our feet, I have one suggestion: put a pool noodle at the foot of the bed, and place the sheets over it when making. One way to make sure you are placing the smooth, finished side of the top sheet next to the body is to place the sheet upside down when making the bed. Then when you fold over the top sheep, the finished side is face up. One thing I have done is take a warm throw, fold it in half, and place it at the foot of the bed with the opening at the top. That way you can slip your feet BETWEEN the layers and get warmth from both sides. My feet get very cold, even in Summer.

My mom taught me hospital corners in 1957 when I learned how to make my own bed. I grew up in a military family and we always called it hospital corners...my aunt was an army nurse and that's what she called them, too....Maybe it was a military thing!😊

I learned hospital corners 100 years ago too…also the hosp. Corner will loosen up quicker than if you just bunch up the sheet and stick it in . Why? Because a patient’s bed is remade daily, where as at home I don’t want to go to that trouble so I use the bunched-up method and it will stay tucked till I chg the bed again.

After visiting Germany many times we have adopted their system of “bettdecke”. We use only a fitted sheet and individual twin duvets with washable covers. No top sheet. It’s a total game changer since we can kick the bedding around without disturbing the other person. As a bonus it takes about one minute to make the bed.

After working for a bit as a hotel housekeeper, I prefer using a flat sheet as both the bottom and top sheet. I also go up a size. I have a queen bed and use king sheets. This gives me plenty of sheet on the side. Personally, I feel that the "proper" sheets for the size bed that you have are too narrow across to give proper coverage. I also go up a size on the comforter. Thanks for the video.

As an older person, I thought maybe this would show me how to avoid back strain when making my bed. I did not really learn anything new here than I already knew. However, Let me suggest some other ideas... When folding your freshly cleaned sheets, do so to make it easier to put them on the bed when they come up in rotation: fold your fitted sheet so it is INSIDE OUT. Fold into quarters: top to bottom first, then side to side. When you go to put it ON the bed, unfold it at the bottom until you have both bottom corners in the proper place Remember, you folded it INSIDE OUT so when you make the bed, you just flip each bottom corner down and it is right side up.
Fold top sheet so outside is OUT: first fold top to bottom, then side to side (plus whatever additional folds you need to make it fit in the storage). When unfolding it, lay the FOLDED sheet at top on one side of bed, with LOOSE edges to outside and hanging down. Then just unfold ONTO the bed in place. None of this fussing with the full sheet unfolded trying to parachute it into place. Unfold flat sheet so the middle fold line of the quarter sheet is in midpoint of mattress. Then just flip it up and over to the other side and then one more unfolding flip bottom edge of sheet open to bottom of mattress.

Great Video! How do you tie those duvet covers ties to your blankets? Is there supposed to be something in your blanket that you tie it to? Mine is a regular wool and down blanket with no holes or anything so where do those tie strings go? Thank you so much Brandon for all your great cleaning tips!

Hi, I have one side of my double bed mattress against the wall. It’s always a struggle to change the bedsheet. Appreciate very much if you could have a vlog on this. Thanks!

I have that same duvet cover set from anthropologie, but I have two matching pillow cases and the two-year-old shams, cost a fortune to get to canada, but is worth it as it literally takes my breath away

I've done hospital corners most of my life because that's the way I was taught. Now that I'm older, I find them too restricting. I recently did away with top sheets altogether and only use a blanket or two depending on the season. I also switched to an adjustable bed making it much easier to put on a bottom sheet.

Wow - I don't even tuck in the flat top sheet - I totally forgot you should do that. But honestly it's uncomfortable lol. Will try it. Great tips.

Been doing this since I can remember. Only thing I’ve changed over the years is using a coverlet instead of a doona cover, it just looks way better and more neet.

I use a flat sheet, with a duvet, but I put the duvet itself between the flat sheet and duvet cover, that way I don’t have to struggle to put the duvet inside the cover! Works for me lol
