My Dad, who recently passed- used to listen to this song on his 1970s era stereo all the time. He loved prog rock. I grew up listening to a lot of YES and Genesis. RIP Dad, you earned it
In 1978 a HS girlfriend introduced me to this. It completely changed my direction in music tastes. I'm sorry for your loss. We lost our grandfather in December of 79. . Listen to it and remember the good times. 🥰
Played this album for my date, in my room in college, we danced to "Ripples" and she married me a few months later. Now, happily married for 41 years, I'll put on Ripples and say "May I have the next dance?" and I still get a smile, a twinkle, and twitterpated. :) #Genesis-Ripples
Phil's voice sounded so much better on this album than on some of his later Genesis ones and his solo work.. Hmm..interesting. I say having just watched a BBC compilation of his solo performances.
In 1976 the IMF had to give Britain an emergency loan to stop the pound collapsing and 300 UK citizens were killed in the civil war that was taking place within its borders.
Imagine being a teenager in the 70s listening to this and thinking pop music is only going to get better and better, without realising that this is the peak.

The Genesis era during which Collins took over from Gabriel is phenomenally good. Where many fans feared the end of the band, Genesis actually took steps forwards, while Gabriel went on to make very inventive solo projects. If this isn't a win-win situation, I don't know anymore....
Life runs too fast. This is the music that I listened to during my teen years. Along with Yes, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, ELP, and so many others. Then the career kicks in. I have worked all around the world. All major cities in Canada, Europe and the US. Some in Africa and South America. Raised two wonderful and successful kids. I am now in my 60s, a grandpa. Retirement looming. But still. That music has the exact same effect on me than 45 years ago and will keep me alive for as long as I can. Collins, Gabriel, Wakeman, Anderson, Plant, Fripp. None of them should be allowed to die. At least their music will never ever.
Exactly this. And as a person of the same age, I could sense they knew the future was coming when we'd all be different people in many respects compared to what we were then. And now the ripples are approaching 'the other side,' as are we. Life in a nutshell. Goosebumps.

This song and "Many Too Many" are two of the most haunting, criminally under-rated songs of all time. I truly love Peter's voice, but Phil's singing on those two (and countless others) is absolutely perfect.
@@Zizzyyzz Given that neither were highly charted and to the best of my knowledge (Ripples didn't chart the billboard top 100), Many too Many has not been part of their playlist in decades...I think the statement stands for itself.

This is one of my favorite Genesis songs from the heart. I've done a lot of crying listening to this. It brings back memories of some of the best times in my life ..the 70s and 80s. The harmony that Phil Collins gives is awesome on this song . This is one I love listening to extra loud.
Many break up this band into two eras of Peter and Phil. But the Trick/Wind era, while brief, is truly unique and underrated. I personally consider it to be their best period.
Very true ! People use to consider Genesis as being divided in two periods : the Gabriel era and the Collins era, but I think Steve Hackett's contribution is incredibly underrated. After his departure, Genesis made good songs, but A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering are in my opinion closest to the masterpieces that preceded them than to the more commercially successful Genesis. I don't know if you've heard about The Musical Box, the official Genesis tribute band (I just saw them in Paris and they're AMAZING) The point is they only play the progressive period, which includes all albums from Trespass to Wind and Wuthering. And the've been touring since 25 years ^^ !

An absolutely inspired guitar solo during the keyboard bridge! Probably some of Hackett's best work ever with Genesis. He certainly keeps it up today in his solo career...
I can’t get over Phil’s early “look” all the way until the early 80’s. Singing a song like this in a hockey Jersey and knit cap, in the 70’s?! I love it!
So true. Also in regards to his voice, it somewhat changed in late 1979 early 1980 by going down one or two octaves and becoming raspier. The perfect song to show this is "Heathaze" from the "Duke" album. He starts off the song softly with his old voice and then when the song builds up, he has the new sandpaper voice that he never had before. His old voice was simply angelic. Loved the guy`s look also, that beard. From mid 1976 to late 1977, he looked like a young Santa Claus. Awesome beard, lol.
I must confess to only recently diving further into the 70s Genesis catalog, having only had And Then There Were Three. I bought A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering in the same week and have lost track of the times I have played both start to finish in the past two months. I was always a big fan of their 80s work, but this song is truly special. Such a stellar composition for one, but the performance is simply magical - how it can be sad and uplifting at the same time really speaks to the uniqueness of it...not the mention the talent of Genesis. So, while it's 45 years old, thank you to Phil, Mike, Tony and Steve for having created something so remarkable that it feels new right now.
That instrumental interlude makes me feel some enormous nostalgia for some place. Hackett/Banks combo is so powerful. It transcends from music to pure magiс that brings your mind to some other time and place. Breathtaking...
The interlude, when I first heard it in 1976, was one of the most sublime musical moments of my life. I would give anything for a Hackett/Banks album. So temperamentally different yet so attuned to each other musically
It sounds like something that would have fit on The Lamb. Especially considering the line from "The Lamia", "But ripples on the sweet pink water, reveal some company unthought of."
Mr. Hackett is playing in Boston soon. Wish I still had the gumption for another go. Thank you RUclips and some decent speakers for being second best. Not sure I could endure Nad live anyways, yes, lol.
Good to hear this back after all these years. The instrumental mid part in the middle of this song gave me goosebumps back than and now. Hackett rules.
This is one of 3 that if my family doesn't play when I depart the Earth; I will come back to haunt them. I didn't know that a video of Ripples live existed until today. Thank you
A masterclass in song writing ,direction and performing art ! Genius, hypnotic mood music. Washes over you ,in waves ,relentlessly. Leaves you in awe, satiated. And stupefied! A lifelong classic!
Ian McDonald When my mom passed on 3 years ago suddenly and unexpectedly I spent the first several nights alone, mostly by choice, I lay alone in bed listening to this song just allowing the profound sorrow to move through me. This is and always will be a very special song.
Anyone else remember lying in bed, in the dark with headphones on with Genesis on full blast? #Real Musicians playing Real Music. I loved this era, playing full album records over and over.
I don't know about best singer ever. There's so many singers with equal claim, if viewed objectively. However, subjectively I know he's certainly up there, and his work with Genesis absolutely makes him a legend.
Phil Collins is an immortal soul. He will thrive far beyond the strength of his body, forever enshrined in the music he left behind. Long live Phil and Genesis 💕
I first heard this song I was 13, in love and free of all inhibition....I still listen to ''Ripples'' now and then. Yes, the ripple never come back...the blue girls have all gone away....Sailed away. 44 years ago........
Yes, the ripples never come back but every time you put the song on and gaze into the pool there are new ripples. That's yet another reason the song is timeless. :)
I’m around the age you were when you first heard this. It’s such a beautiful song. The ripple may not come back, but this song comes back to your memory, and that’s the beauty of it all.
My beloved wife's mother passed away today. Went peacefully to be with the LORD. There are many things about this song that remind me of her, 'Bluebells' being one of them. Thank you, Genesis. GOD bless you, Judy. x
Anyone else wish they would've just focused on Steve playing the guitar for the whole video?? my God...he makes the most beautiful sounds come out of his instrument
Same here, this middle bridge era of the band is my favorite, everyone talks about two versions of the band but in my mind it's three and this is the best.
Bought the album "Trick of the Tail" still playing and enjoying it nearly 40 years later, next track is one of my favourites " robbery, assault and battery", not an album to be played quietly.
Ripples Genesis Blue girls come in every size Some are wise and some otherwise, They got pretty blue eyes. For an hour a man may change For an hour her face looks strange - Looks strange, looks strange. Marching to the promised land Where the honey flows and takes you by the hand, Pulls you down on your knees, While you're down a pool appears. The face in the water looks up, And she shakes her head as if to say That it's the last time you'll look like today. Sail away, away Ripples never come back. Gone to the other side. Sail away, away. The face that launched a thousand ships Is sinking fast, that happens you know, The water gets below. Seems not very long ago Lovelier she was than any that I know. Angels never know it's time To close the book and gracefully decline, The song has found a tale. My, what a jealous pool is she. The face in the water looks up She shakes her head as if to say That the blue girls have all gone away. Sail away, away Ripples never come back. They've gone to the other side. Look into the pool, Ripples never come back, Dive to the bottom and go to the top To see where they have gone Oh, they've gone to the other side... Sail away, away Ripples never come back. Gone to the other side. Look into the pool, The ripples never come back, come back, Dive to the bottom and go to the top To see where they have gone They've gone to the other side ~ What a brilliant song. Thank you for the upload.

March 26, 1976...London Arena, in London, Ontario. The very first concert that Phil Collins performed as front man, and lead singer for the band on their Trick of the Tail tour. One of my best friends Geoff Clague witnessed the epic event and told me endless stories of how great that night was. I was fortunate to see Genesis 3 times between 1981-84. Some of the greatest music, with one of the best light, and sound shows I've ever witnessed in the over 100 or so shows I've enjoyed from the mid 70's to the mid 90's. Thank you for this great gem!!!
This, and Your Own Special Way are among some of the most beautiful arrangements of all time. Love to see that Phil is sporting a classic Minnesota North Stars jersey in this video.
Sail away, away Ripples never come back Gone to the other side Sail away, sail away, .........................Always get a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes.
Working from home having a BAD day at work stumbled on this while surfing on my second screen, This brought me straight back to listing to this album in my bedroom as a kid (with it's clicks and pops) over and over. This period of genesis was my childhood. THANK YOU for posting this. If you are not moved by this song or any of the songs on this album you are officially dead inside!
I grew up in the Northeast (near Philly). Went to college in Georgia in the early 1980s and played this for girls who had never heard it before. I even had a live version with audience singing along the chorus. I eventually had a group of girls in my dorm room every Friday night listening to Genesis songs...especially Ripples and Entangled.
I just heard this song last night preformed by Tom Bukovac and his wife on the Corona lessons. He did a great job and now I heard the original and am blown away! As a singer, guitarist and songwriter myself, I could only ever dream of writing a piece this outstanding! Sail away.........away!
That's the same reason for my return. Honestly, from a composition standpoint, just remember that I ii iii IV V vi Vii can be played in any formation ;)
In the upcoming concerts, I hope Steve or Peter will be a surprise guest even only at one night and on one song. Steve is ready for Firth of Fifth and Los Endos. Peter on Carpet Crawlers... That will save billions of Genesis fans's soul.
Amazing 70's British Rock! I could completely see myself as a 70's British student, walking home from school, listening to this on a portable radio- thinking about how pleasant, yet wistful and epic this song is in a school uniform.
Utterly memorable.... it´s awsome how the guitar and keyboad solos put us into a sailing trip at mind. RIPPLES may never come back, but thanks songs like this keeps always coming. Thanks for uploading.
Every time I hear this masterpiece.. my heart feels funny and I get goosebumps, this song is so infinite beautiful.. it’s the best genesis compilation in my opinion
So I'm not the only music maniac listening to Genesis 50 trillion times. Where does he get the time and energy to write and perform? Sing and play drums at the same time ( not really)
I grew up in the 60's and 70's and thoroughly loved many bands and single artists but Genesis has been #1 for me then and now. The music they made stood the test of time. 🎉😊
Saw this live during their tour in my teens during the mid 70s, small venue near Phlia PA, up close and personal - Never anything like it by Genesis ever since - I was also present at their 1974 Lamb Lies Down show in Providence RI while at RISD there (another small venue) - Talk about memories that never die, now at age 68 still feel chills! Heart out to Phil re: his illness.
I never tire of this song from start to finish. Nobody could sing this song like Collins. As a lifelong drummer, some 50 years, Collins an influence there as well.
Same here. I still remember where I first heard it, at a buddy's house where we'd play poker games and listen to music in HS when I had just turned 16. I had heard The Lamb song on radio, but that was it at that point even though I was already listening to Yes and ELP and Kansas. I was blown away listening to it, and went out and bought it as soon as I could. This would have probably been summer of 76. Such an impact, it's not only still my favorite Genesis album, I think its my favorite album of all time. Every track is stellar, and having seen drums>Los Endos played live 10 different times at Genesis concerts, it is such a special iconic album for me.
I always think of Germany when I hear this song! Was living there in the 70's with a German buddy and he took me to see them. Didn't know who Genesis was but became a huge fan right away. LOL, called my buddy today and we had a long talk. Going over there next year to see him and his wife.
This is why Genesis is my favorite group. They also inspired me to start playing more complicated pieces on the piano. And this particular song is why, when I bought an acoustic guitar, I had to get a 12 string because I wanted to play Ripples
I remember being introduced to this song by someone very special to me. He is sadly gone a few years rip 💔 but this brings back happy memories of time we shared ❤

ATTWT has always been my fav Genesis album. Odd their were not more popular songs on that album. I think it’s their best album.
Don't miss "It's Yourself" which was not included in Trick of the Tail
3 of my favorite genesis albums
In your life, you don't know how much effect your ripples have.....only too late...this track is so true and so sublime...
Sounds like a masterpiece. Ive just recently started listening to their 70s era stuff. Ive never heard a bad song by these guys.
Then you need to listen to Steve Hackett...fantastic band he has assembled!
When someone you love leaves your life forever, this song will break you.
Or can heal you. It healed me.
Yes I'm broke
This song and evidence of autumn from three sides live get me every time 😔
Face School very true
Nobody knows that better than Phil after a million divorces ...
That instrumental interlude makes me feel some enormous nostalgia for some place. Hackett/Banks combo is so powerful. It transcends from music to pure magiс that brings your mind to some other time and place. Breathtaking...
Very well put
The interlude, when I first heard it in 1976, was one of the most sublime musical moments of my life. I would give anything for a Hackett/Banks album. So temperamentally different yet so attuned to each other musically
Yes so true. Makes me very nostalgic and sad. My life has gone by so quick. I'm 65. I saw this live at Knebworth.
@@wendyhollandsworth9016 Life isn't over until you say it's over. Keep your eye on the tiger
Steve Hackett’s backward sounding electric guitar notes are some sort of sorcery! 😎🎸👍
Synthi Hi-Fli
It sounds like something that would have fit on The Lamb. Especially considering the line from "The Lamia", "But ripples on the sweet pink water, reveal some company unthought of."
Tony and Steve in harmony, miss our Mr. Hackett for sure,
It's the B in the A-B-A that lifts this song from the pedestrian to the plane of masterpiece. Tony's structure and keys, Steve's guitar and sound.
Sorry, but it's Rutherford/Banks...
@@rafaelziella8095 The violin effect solo in the middle of the song is clearly Steve Hacket's guitar.
@@rafaelziella8095 Steve is playing the guitar is what is meant!!
I heard this 40years ago. It's more perfect now than it was then ❤
One of the most beautiful songs, ever.
Loved this album since I was a kid...52 years old now and still one of my all time favorite albums.
62...and it certainly is in my top 5!
57 and the soundtrack to many memories

This is one of 3 that if my family doesn't play when I depart the Earth; I will come back to haunt them. I didn't know that a video of Ripples live existed until today. Thank you
A masterclass in song writing ,direction and performing art ! Genius, hypnotic mood music.
Washes over you ,in waves ,relentlessly. Leaves you in awe, satiated. And stupefied!
A lifelong classic!
Beautifully stated.
There's nothing like this
A class of its own..
Well said!!
One year to this day I lost my mom. Grew up on Genesis because of her. This fits so well. And still stands to this day.
Sorry for your loss. I just lost my mum and it's hard to get through. This helps.
Ian McDonald When my mom passed on 3 years ago suddenly and unexpectedly I spent the first several nights alone, mostly by choice, I lay alone in bed listening to this song just allowing the profound sorrow to move through me. This is and always will be a very special song.
Sorry for your loss
Anyone else remember lying in bed, in the dark with headphones on with Genesis on full blast? #Real Musicians playing Real Music. I loved this era, playing full album records over and over.
It's at times like this i wish Phil Collins was 10 YEARS YOUNGER SO WE CAN APPRECIATE MORE OF HIS MUSIC. the best singer ever.
I don't know about best singer ever. There's so many singers with equal claim, if viewed objectively. However, subjectively I know he's certainly up there, and his work with Genesis absolutely makes him a legend.
For my beautiful Brother "Rich" gone but never forgotten miss you Bro. I will miss always and for ever. Your Song. xxxx
Unique work of art. One of the reasons why humans should survive.
Well said,a decade ago.
In Jesus Christ we WILL survive :)
EVERYONE READING THIS PLEASE SAY A PRAYER FOR PHIL.....THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.....🙏🙏🙏😇💖💔💔😢
Collins es el mejor cantante de baladas tiene una sensibilidad especial para introducirte en su canción ❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤❤
Prayers for Phil ❤
Phil Collins is an immortal soul. He will thrive far beyond the strength of his body, forever enshrined in the music he left behind. Long live Phil and Genesis 💕
🙏
I first heard this song I was 13, in love and free of all inhibition....I still listen to ''Ripples'' now and then. Yes, the ripple never come back...the blue girls have all gone away....Sailed away. 44 years ago........
Yes, the ripples never come back but every time you put the song on and gaze into the pool there are new ripples. That's yet another reason the song is timeless. :)
I’m around the age you were when you first heard this. It’s such a beautiful song. The ripple may not come back, but this song comes back to your memory, and that’s the beauty of it all.
I've seen them 4 times and I can Honestly say the BEST band live!
Lucky you I never had a chance to see them. I did see Peter Gabriel once and he put on one of the best concerts I've ever been to
My Mom passed in 1993 ...and after all the years I'm able to look back with a little smile while tears are still falling...
...Love Tony's Piano Playing...Steve's Guitar Work...Mike on Bass...And Phil on Drums...
Saw both Genesis and then Phil Colin’s later in concert what an honor to grow up in an age where music was great! Best band ever!!💕
Been listening 45years and still listening thanks 😂❤🎉🎉
My beloved wife's mother passed away today. Went peacefully to be with the LORD. There are many things about this song that remind me of her, 'Bluebells' being one of them. Thank you, Genesis. GOD bless you, Judy. x
Going on 60 myself...this song has more meaning! Ty genesis 4 all your music!! Ripples is a deep song... We're all gonna get older and die!
A song from Genesis that touches anyone's heart.
Thanks Genesis. Steve Hackett is incredible!
Anyone else wish they would've just focused on Steve playing the guitar for the whole video?? my God...he makes the most beautiful sounds come out of his instrument
Such a beautiful song. We need more songs like this from true “artists” that can transport us to another dimension.
Try CCV by Simrit, it's on RUclips; amazing transporting!
There's all kinds of super music out there.
Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering my two fav albums
Same here, this middle bridge era of the band is my favorite, everyone talks about two versions of the band but in my mind it's three and this is the best.
Me too!!!!
Bought the album "Trick of the Tail" still playing and enjoying it nearly 40 years later, next track is one of my favourites " robbery, assault and battery", not an album to be played quietly.
@Phil Collins fake account
Robbery...Phil's drums...murder.
Ripples
Genesis
Blue girls come in every size
Some are wise and some otherwise,
They got pretty blue eyes.
For an hour a man may change
For an hour her face looks strange -
Looks strange, looks strange.
Marching to the promised land
Where the honey flows and takes you by the hand,
Pulls you down on your knees,
While you're down a pool appears.
The face in the water looks up,
And she shakes her head as if to say
That it's the last time you'll look like today.
Sail away, away
Ripples never come back.
Gone to the other side.
Sail away, away.
The face that launched a thousand ships
Is sinking fast, that happens you know,
The water gets below.
Seems not very long ago
Lovelier she was than any that I know.
Angels never know it's time
To close the book and gracefully decline,
The song has found a tale.
My, what a jealous pool is she.
The face in the water looks up
She shakes her head as if to say
That the blue girls have all gone away.
Sail away, away
Ripples never come back.
They've gone to the other side.
Look into the pool,
Ripples never come back,
Dive to the bottom and go to the top
To see where they have gone
Oh, they've gone to the other side...
Sail away, away
Ripples never come back.
Gone to the other side.
Look into the pool,
The ripples never come back, come back,
Dive to the bottom and go to the top
To see where they have gone
They've gone to the other side ~ What a brilliant song. Thank you for the upload.

A song about the fleetingness of life!
Angels never know it’s time
A masterpiece of a song. Poetic and dreamlike...it takes me to a beautiful place ..drug free! absolutely love it..

I agree.

Sail away, sail away, .........................Always get a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes.
Great song. I like the way Steve plays his guitar like a musical instrument and not just like an extension of his naughty bits...
Another classic from Genesis. Long live their superb repertoire of songs.
That guitar solo… God, that feels like musically drowning. Such a beautiful song, probably one of my favorite songs of all time.
For the "Blue Girls"?
Yep, girls Loved this song. Well played
I just heard this song last night preformed by Tom Bukovac and his wife on the Corona lessons.
He did a great job and now I heard the original and am blown away!
As a singer, guitarist and songwriter myself, I could only ever dream of writing a piece this outstanding!
Sail away.........away!
Me too. I am a 72 Englishman and somehow missed Genesis then but will now listen thanks to Tom.
That's the same reason for my return. Honestly, from a composition standpoint, just remember that
I ii iii IV V vi Vii
can be played in any formation ;)
This is Classic Genesis at it's best from their best album, A Trick Of The Tail and doesn't get better then this..Genesis Rocks!!!!
A good single malt in my hand earphones on looking out a pure white snowy landscape can life get any better thanks genesis
The best group ever…
One of those true classics which almost never have videos. One of the most romantic songs ever written.
It's actually a really sad song. 😥😭💧💦
Hackett playing alongside Banks, that's a combination that needs to happen again, it would be like a musical "Bankett"
:-D
Agreed. Even if Peter never wants to do a reunion, Steve would be welcome. Of course, Steve is doing more these days than Peter.
In the upcoming concerts, I hope Steve or Peter will be a surprise guest even only at one night and on one song. Steve is ready for Firth of Fifth and Los Endos. Peter on Carpet Crawlers... That will save billions of Genesis fans's soul.
@@MichaelBradley1967 The other day i made myself the question... Where is Alistair Gordon? But now i'm also asking... where is Peter Gabriel?
My PG question was answered, but Alistair, have no idea still.
Love Phil's Minnesota North Star's jersey.
Amazing 70's British Rock!
I could completely see myself as a 70's British student, walking home from school, listening to this on a portable radio- thinking about how pleasant, yet wistful and epic this song is in a school uniform.
A beautiful, beautiful tune
Utterly memorable.... it´s awsome how the guitar and keyboad solos put us into a sailing trip at mind. RIPPLES may never come back, but thanks songs like this keeps always coming. Thanks for uploading.

Every time I hear this masterpiece.. my heart feels funny and I get goosebumps, this song is so infinite beautiful.. it’s the best genesis compilation in my opinion
My all time favorite band, such positive and brilliant musicians!
So I'm not the only music maniac listening to Genesis 50 trillion times. Where does he get the time and energy to write and perform? Sing and play drums at the same time ( not really)

Haha no I have listened to everything they have ever done 51 trillion times.
Me,too
No, you're not...just wne to see Stev Hackett the other day...there are a lot more, believe me. Lucky people who grew up a few years ago
Wait...I thought he had cloned himself? :D
This is an amazing song, just a beautiful reflective Gem, love every song on the s Masterpiece
I never tire of this song from start to finish. Nobody could sing this song like Collins. As a lifelong drummer, some 50 years, Collins an influence there as well.
'Trick Of The Tail', was the first Genesis album I ever heard. It instantly hooked me. They have been my favourite group ever since.
I got the album as a birthday present in 1976 when it first came out. That began a longstanding love affair with the band.
Awesome.
I remember being introduced to this song by someone very special to me. He is sadly gone a few years rip 💔 but this brings back happy memories of time we shared ❤
i agree with clovis this was the tune that defines them, it couldnt possibly get any better
