My god Peter Gabriel’s vocal was every ounce as powerful as on the original recording. I wish they could have stayed together forever. They were unbelievably great.
I used to be very closed to Phil's pop era, but now I found fascinating both fases.
Totally agreee
And it was 73' , he was quite young, He says the lyric " selling England by the pound". The album title. Peter had to move on, climb his Solsbury Hill. 😉

One of the best 🙏
No one mentioned here that they were all around 23 years old ... and they have composed songs that we're all listening almost fifty years later
Yep, just kids at the time.
Giuseppe Falcone Young talented and GORGEOUS!
Genius
I'm still trying to figure out why? The cheesy stuff that Phil put out in the 80s as bad as it was, was better than this crap.
@@strtngfrsh you have no mind for art rock.
Pure musical genius. Steve Hackett never got the recognition he deserved!
Correct Steve's brilliant live now and his band 👏
C'est lui qui est parti mais çà n'a pas empéché genesis de continuer. Et puis steve hackett se produit très bien avec sa bande.
Oh yes he did.
Definitely the best Genesis song touches of classical, jazz prog etc Al. Peter Gabriel s voices is incredible. It's total musical perfection , a band at its peak , heart breaking beauty.
Spot on

The problem with these old films is that the camera is always on the singer for 90% of the time and now instead of ever being Steve Hackett play that awesome solo we got to see Peter Gabriel’s tambourine skills
still, they were some good tambourine skills
Steve had a very subdued style, there;s no much to see unless they zoom in very close. Not exactly cinematic.
They want to avoid showing Steve's Moustache.
@@peterr1001 That mustache was the only good part of Genesis back then you take that back!
/s
Yeah, but Gabriel was mesmerizing. Even more than Jagger.
Phil’s drumming so incredible on here
Steve Hacket's work here comes from another world. Such an innovative musician!!
The looks like the bass player from spinal tap here !
Exactly, the brilliance of his playing has never been duplicated on another Genesis song.
@@kb9788 this is their best song??
@@TheGreatAlan75 It’s not but it’s a great example of their instrumental skills and chemistry as a band
I wonder why Steve Hackett was never asked to join King Crimson?
A genuine masterpiece. Hacket and Gabriel were sublime and Collins on drums exquisite. Awesome
It sounds a bit Celtic or from the middle ages
Love Collins and Hackett the rest are sublime absolutely agree.
Steve Hackett's guitar tapping when Eddy van Halen still went to school taking piano lessons or played the drums with Alex on guitar ;)
Try again lambchop.
The absolute GUTS it took!!! Because no matter how virtuosic it is, the "common man" wouldn't get it. They were a completely different era. They put it all out there, especially Gabriel!
Gabriel was beyond the weirdest musicians ever to me and way overrated I don't care what any of you people say.....
Genius ...never get tired of Peters voice.
Early Genesis with Gabriel was the best all around Prog Rock group! Lyrics, vocals, compositions, musicianship, stage presence! They had it all!
Without Gabriel, they were never the same!
To me I thought Collins was the better singer. Collins sounded so good live. Gabriel for me couldn't hit the high notes as well.
I agree. Saw them on the Lamb tour. Awesome. Saw them during the Trick of the Tale tour. A, B comparison was no contest. Gabriel.
i don't they were ever meant to be the same. that's the whole point of a band evolving. even if gabriel had stayed, they wouldn't have been the same. genesis has never been a band that put out the same album twice ;)
@@amandabooth7399 you are obviously not one for the music. Just a smooth voice. You and Patrick Bateman would get along fine.
Correct pete was great and phil but the early genesis was more creative music wise 👌
There are many great albums. But "Selling England By The Pound" is definitely one of the No. 1 candidates. It's so artistic, so perfect. It has such a special sound and atmosphere.
Michael Lukas Knoppik it’s a Great Album but it’s not anywhere near my Top 20 all.time...

I see Hackett move one finger and magically produce a thousand notes. Truly outstanding guitar skills.
Steve Hackett was already finger topping back then such a great guitarist
And did you know he's killer on blues harp and dobro as well? I mean really good! And he can sing!
Like a lot of ppl are so surprised when the band Primus first came out all that bass technique from Mr Claypool was a copy from way back late 60s early 70s from King Crimson bass player and Frank Zappa and Mahavis Nu John McLaughlin
undoubtedly the unsung hero of that lineup, as far as i'm concerned.
Gabriel's voice makes me melt

@@jpbmoura98 O quê?
This song especially the opening section is incredibly relevant 49 years on.
I saw this LIVE IN 1973. I’ll never forget this concert; better than “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway”. I saw this in the long forgotten Ford Auditorium in Detroit, Michigan.❤❤😊
Peter Gabriel was strange in those days but he could sing as good as Jon Anderson of Yes. Great concert !
better than Lamb?
@@darrell6800 Much better. I saw them the next year performing “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.” Selling England By the Pound beat the pants off of Lamb.
The Voice is excellent
Selling England by the Pound is the best Genesis record
No doubt and this is their greatest song.
100% I pity anyone who has not discovered this masterpiece.
Foxtrot is better
Foxtrot. They're all good, though. You'll find many "Trick of the Tail" partisans as well.
Selling might be the best musically. However, by the band's own admission, some of the lyrics are a letdown. Firth of Fifth is brilliant, but the words... geez, what a mess.
@@dennoow suppers always ready for me also , although I'll always watch the sky's for liquid Len and Harold demure 👍
The Mellotron in this song always brings me to tears!!
Dude! The best part of the song! Those mellotron chorals on the “Fat old lady section” are something else! So beautiful, yet haunting. Human…but not. Perfectly played by Tony Banks.
@@bolandjd thats peak Genesis right there. So damn good
Mo Mellotron!
@@scotttaylor8811 I like how youtube has a “translate to English” under your comment

God I love old synths and the mellotron... especially when played by Banks, genius! Such gut-wrenching emotion
Peter Gabriel’s voice blended so well with Steve Hackett’s guitar melodies. A shame they never did more work together after Genesis. A missed opportunity.
Steve and Peter were never friends. In fact, the band was formed by Peter and Tony who are friends since childhood. Mike joined them almost immediately, so he would be the other one who had the most confidence in Peter.
The only one from Genesis who has always had an excellent relationship with Steve is Phil.
@@silentgnome Not true at all. They still talk. Steve Hackett reached out to Peter first when he had his financial troubles in the early 80's. And if you watch any of the band interviews Steve and Pete seem to be on the same wavelength. When Banks yet again mentioned that Lamb was "flawed" Hackett made sure to mention that it's been voted the top prog album ever several times lol. Banks seemed to be the reason Peter left the band. The most tension was with him.
@@mr.brenman2132 I totally agree
Mike Rutherford is super cool that switching between 12 string guitar and bass is awesome!

Why do people categorize their music solely as prog. To me this is some of the finest music period.
Its
4:40 listening with headphones, if you miss seeing Mike Rutherford switching to bass, you definitely hear it! That distinct Rickenbacker rumble.
This band should be the hippest band of all times
Phil came along and wrote "Whu-Dunnit" ,.uh,..and that was the end of it ,..
Who cares about being you walking abortions just love to say dumb crap dont you?
Peter came up with the idea of “Narration” before each song , In order to give Michael & Steve time to tune their Guitars/Bass . Peter believed that the audience being subjected to silence was unfair , So Peter began introduction of each song with a Narrative for not only Michael & Steve , But for the Fans in attendance as well .
As long as it took Michael & Steve to get organized, Would be the length of Peter’s Narration .
Phenomenal Band .
0:32 and the magic begins❤ Thank God Peter Gabriel exists! This is the real Genesis!
WANDERFUL...without HIM the GENESIS where never more THE SAME...it was a pity...
By FAR one of the greatest pieces of music EVER composed !!!!
#FACT
I like from this LP: "It's one o'clock and time for lunch...la di da di dum...when the sun beats down and I lie on the bench, I can always hear them talk....."
And England 2023 is officially 100% SOLD. I weep for her and my country of birth Scotland.

I thankful for Mr. Hackett staying in the road, playing old Genesis stuff!
...And these boys were 23 then; with all their artistic imagination and inventiveness. Well, the times they are a-changin'
Masterpiece. They interact divinely with each other. I consider it the most complete and experimental band in the history of music.
And PG is still experimenting to this day. Genesis….not so much
Peter Gabriel is my all time favorite artist
Peter Gabriel was a real showman. Kind of a Bowie/Ozzie/Marc Bolan/Syd Barret mixture. Can even see a little Iggy Pop. But he was unique in his own right! He was in the spotlight before a lot of famous rock stars. Also made his own sound and didn`t follow anyone.
@Sebastião Silva And, still is. Though we all do age and if you asked any to say if Old Peter and New Peter (which is it?) were the same person, well, many would not see them as the same.

The thing that makes their music so great, is that each musician was so insinc.
If there was a progressive rock museum, this would be exhibit #1
Thanks for sharing.
This is the best ever Genesis video. Which means it is the best ever video by any band. Genesis were the best musicians ever. And so English deep down
It saddens me knowing the days of such talent we had in the 60s and 70s are gone. Melancholia and nostalgia sets in everytime I play these classic tunes from so many awesome bands of that era...
It's not gone, just not put on the pedestal that artists used to be. Now labels and mainstream media plus streaming companies prioritize celebrity and market trends over songwriting.

I basically gave up on new rock after the 70's ended-except for a few choice artists: King Crimson's early 80's trilogy. John McLaughlin's trilogy. And my home country's Canada's bard Bruce Cockburn. - Other than that took a deep dive into classical. It saved my musical soul!

Way ahead of their time... 1:49 this lick sounds very post 2000 R&B. 4:14 reintroduces the same lick but it’s a more avant garde, borderline 90s black metal sounding version of it. They were exploring genres that weren’t even genres yet. Truly progressive.

Glorious. What an opening verse. Just sheer class.
Peter Fabriel, a mystic child from another planet, very funny, enchantment and bizarre, artisti, expressive, genius, poet, producer, performer, wizard-Sorcerer. Absolutely fascinating person especially in these days.
I borrowed this album from my local library. I didn't even buy it until several years. Then I bought everything Genesis. When Peter Gabriel left everything changed. 'Trick of the tail' was good but then they changed. Two albums later I was no longer interested even though they achieved massive success. It was not my band anymore. This was their best moment. Why GENESIS were one of the best rock bands ever...
I'm a guitar player and I know the guitarist is tapping way before Eddie vh.
Lol there are other players who were tapping way before him too. EVH only popularized the technique.
@@CBT5777 There are many, many players I adore (EVH being not one of them, but propably Hackett). But calling anyone of them "god" is overexagarating and not useful because everytime there is someone crying out "Hey, he is no god! MINE favorite guitarist is a god!!!".
That is so tiresome.
Eddie ..Who..? 🤔
The original name of Van Halen was Genesis. Someone told EVH there was an English band using the name, so he went to the record store and bought “Nursery Cryme”, heard the tapping on “Hogweed”, and the rest is history....
