There are many reasons why GENESIS is the best prog band of the time, and they're hard to articulate, but it has a lot to do with the way they take you on these musical adventures and then circle back to repeat a certain musical phrase in a new context.

The trees, the sky, the lily fair
The scene of death is lying just below
The mountain cuts off the town from view
Like a cancer growth is removed by skill
    Let it be revealed
    A waterfall, his madrigal
    An inland sea, his symphony
    Undinal songs
    Urge the sailors on
'Til lured by the sirens' cry
Now as the river dissolves in sea
So Neptune has claimed another soul
And so with gods and men

Nothing they made after Lamb could measure up. There was a time when the public listened to a new album at least half a dozen times before deciding upon its relative merit. That opinion was not driven in any way by the number of times that tracks from that album were being given saturation exposure on national radio or television.
I'm British and I don't recall ever hearing Firth Of Fifth on radio or tv. I first heard this album because I had him friends who recommended it. I borrowed a copy, taped it onto cassette, listened to it time after time and finally determined to buy my own copy. Who care not or gaze with joy
    To see reflected there
The trees, the sky, the lily fair
The scene of death is lying just below
The mountain cuts off the town from view
Like a cancer growth is removed by skill
    Let it be revealed
    A waterfall, his madrigal
    An inland sea, his symphony
    Undinal songs
    Urge the sailors on
'Til lured by the sirens' cry
Now as the river dissolves in sea
So Neptune has claimed another soul
And so with gods and men
The sheep remain inside their pen
Until the shepherd leads his flock away
The sands of time were eroded by
    The river of constant change

      What does undinal mean?

    • @crispyrobot77
      @crispyrobot77 3 года назад +23

@@leonardofringuelli7870 That is an EXCELLENT question. Not a common word. 'Undinal' means "Of, characteristic of, or associated with UNDINES". An UNDINE is a mythological figure of European tradition, a Water Nymph who becomes human when she falls in love with a man but is doomed to die if he is unfaithful.Origin. Late 19th century. SO in the context of the song it sounds like they are saying Sailors were inspired by the songs of Water Nymphs.

I have lived a long and adventurous life- I’ve loved many a good woman, as the saying goes, and been to a lot of wonderful places, played every kind of music I was capable of. Now I’m old and dying slowly from a chronic illness. I have a list of songs of various bands and artists I want to have played at my funeral, if they have one for me, and Firth of Fifth is on it, along with Supper’s Ready, and the instrumental version of FZ playing What’s New In Baltimore. Beyond the Sea is on it, too, as well as Armstrong’s Wonderful World. When I get sick enough to merit the really good drugs, I’m planning on making up a playlist of these great songs, and I’ll listen to them while I unobtrusively remove myself from life’s chessboard, and join my friends and family who have gone before. I bet they have some fine music in the afterlife…

There are so many different musical passages in this song - and of course in many other Genesis songs - but all together they make a whole unmatched by any other band. Starts off with that magnificent solo by Tony - he's really an underrated composer/keyboard player, and again that short solo at 4:08. Before that the flute solo by Peter, and him singing is amazing. And then of course Steve's wonderful guitar solo at 5:42 - not just another guitar solo just for the sake of it, but another passage that has a meaning, that really speaks with your mind. And Phil is to Genesis what Ringo was for the Beatles, yes even more so. All in all, five geniuses working together, very seldom seen or heard. No weak points, all highly competent and talented. And this song is no doubt a masterpiece. But so is the entire album. Another masterpiece is Nursery cryme, just like Selling... there are no bad songs, no fillers. Excellent songwriting!! 💯🎶🎵
