First Genesis's masterpiece!! There would be others.
tsehehe...yeah.
😊
The Knife. The KNIFE. *_The Knife._*
I was driving down to Cornwall from London recently with my nephew, who's mostly into 90s dance music, etc. After we left the services, I asked if we could maybe have a bit of my music, and put this on. His face slowly turned from "WTF is THIS 😡?" to "WTF is THIS 😮?" to "WTF is THIS 😍?". I've been feeding him late 60s /early 70s stuff from all sorts of bands since. He was as surprised that this was Genesis as he was that Piper At The Gates Of Dawn was Pink Floyd.
I like both of it - the 90s dance, rock and hip hop stuff I grew up with and few bands, songs and albums from the 60s and 70s - the 80s are often too cheesy.
man this is real heavy for early 70s
The advert in the middle of the song really kills it.
😂
Sounds like a non-adblocking problem.
THANKS RUclips
RUclips Premium zaps the ads for a reasonable monthly fee
YT even pops up a prompt at the beginning of the video for a 2-month trial to watch ad-free, the other choice says "No, I want ads".
Anyone old enough to remember when the general public finally had access to cable tv? Where I lived, we had OnTV offered in the late 70s, and then SelectTV. We were told we'd pay for access but everything was ad-free.
When I first got Road Runner Internet, everything was available - we even had access to all of Usenet.
Nobody could call our home after we got hold of that dial-up modem; we were on all the time!
Eventually somebody said there was x amount cost to run the servers and access became limited and here came the ads.
Whoever continued that downhill slope, I'd like to take on of those old heavy cathode ray monitors we had with our desktop computers and crown them with it down to their shoulders.
I can't hear that "Now now now" at the end without thinking of Peter in the old man mask, shouting while a bright light flashes up at him. Spooky and awesome. God, they were something!
Saw them in a not packed theater when they first came to Chicago... Wow!
It’s Iconic!!
Was lucky to see The Lamb tour in ‘75 … they played The Musical Box as the closer of the first half👏🏼❤
Yes...i heard their first concert here in America, hardly anyone attended...that changed in years to come!
Peter Griffin fortnite
Play me Old King Cole
That I may join with you
All your hearts now seem so far from me
It hardly seems to matter now
And the nurse will tell you lies
Of a kingdom beyond the skies
But I am lost within this half-world
It hardly seems to matter now
Play me my song
Here it comes again
Play me my song
Here it comes again
Just a little bit
Just a little bit more time
Time left to live out my life
Play me my song
Here it comes again
Play me my song
Here it comes again
Old King Cole was a merry old soul
And a merry old soul was he
So he called for his pipe
And he called for his bowl
And he called for his fiddlers three
The clock, tick tock
On the mantelpiece
And I want
And I feel
And I know
And I touch
The wall
She's a lady, she's got time
Brush back your hair
And let me get to know your face
She's a lady, she is mine
Brush back your hair
And let me get to know your flesh
I've been waiting here for so long
And all the time that passed me by
It doesn't seem to matter now
You stand there with your fixed expression
Casting doubt on all I have to say
Why don't you touch me, touch me
Why don't you touch me, touch me
Touch me now, now, now, now, now
Who can believe this song is approaching the half century mark! I can still listen to this today and not even feel like it's not lost one bit if its luster.
Actually it's better now than ever, when you consider some of the crap that passes for music these days.
Agreed. A brilliant song.
There Is Still Truth.
Nursery Crime is my second favorite Genesis album just behind Foxtrot which is my favorite album since I've been listening to music (a very very long time) and will always be my favorite.
Genesis (the PG Genesis) has become a part of me instilled into my flesh and bones...My Heart and Soul
Masterpiece! Beyond belief!
Now, now, now, now, now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love my ORIGINAL Genesis more than anything!!! ❤❤❤
Hackett outdid himself on guitar here.
Yep, they really let him rip on this one. Imagine having a guy like this show up for the audition? Grand slam.
Have you seen him with his band tour all over the world playing these great tunes. They are very good and Steve is still ripping it up. My favourite guitarist of all time and I know there are plenty to choose from.
He's amazing, but the solos at 5:48-6:06 and 6:34-6:47 are Tony's, played on electric piano through fuzz
@@Syfoll You are correct. Also, Steve didn't come up with a lot of the guitar parts here, since they had two other guitarists work on this song before Steve's arrival (His playing is still very awesome, though)
@@Syfoll where did you get that info?
This track and Fountain of Salmacis are friggen brilliant!
Not to mention "Suppers Ready" off Foxtrot!! Simply stellar piece of music.
I have to say from the perspective of a record producer/audio engineer this song has a lot of very advanced mixing techniques , way ahead of its time for 1971 and not having automation like we do today it was definitely many hands on the board while this was being mixed. This is absolutely one of the best mixes I’ve ever heard , so much going on but it’s very tastefully done . All the fader/volume swells going on just compliment the music so much and the very tasteful use of effects and not going overkill. I still use this song today when teaching audio production .
Such a masterpiece,,, THANK YOU GENESIS FOR BRINGING JOY TO MY LIFE WITH YOUR MUSIC
The song that made fall in love with Genesis.
For me it was Watcher of the skies.
初めて耳にした時の衝撃は忘れられません
聴き終えた後しばらく放心状態でした
One day I'll be dead and I won't be able to listen to Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme ever again. So I'm glad to be able to do so while I'm not dead.
uuuhmm interesting🤔
Some might think that an odd comment. Not me, my friend. Two freakin' classic albums!!
s t o n e r r o c k
au cas ou tu ne le saurai pas tu es déjà mort mec
Suppers ready is a milestone in history of rock ❤ , then comes musical box and others..
Firth of Fifth is right there too. Stephen Hackett's guitar solo on that song is out of this world
Monumentale!!! Un assoluto capolavoro. Album meraviglioso, band fenomenale!!! Genesis forever!!!!! ❤❤❤ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is how you play the Musical Box, not only the final part. This is a piece of art that should be played in museums or libraries so people can be educated to listen good music.
I don't like it.

Curious, do you like rap?
@@keithb6717 Try to ask something a little bit less obvious and simple, mate. Just because someone doesn't like something you do, doesn't mean you can assume they like you probably consider "jungle music." I like all sorts of music, just not 70s Genesis. Calm down... you sound like the illiterate yokels you're trying to pigeonhole.

@Colleen He (poor young-old beheaded Henry) is shouting to (still-young-but-grown) Cynthia, who happens to be the one who clove his head off
@Colleen Henry comes back as a sexually frustrated old man and Cynthia is still a child at this point in time
This song and "The Knife" are fighting for my number one favorite Genesis song right now.
Yeah, the middle portion of this song and the Knife are also probably the hardest songs Genesis ever did. Steve's guitar work is simply amazing here. My top 5 favorites are 1. Suppers Ready 2. Firth of Fifth 3. The Musical Box 4. The Knife 5. The Cinema Show.
Those two songs and The Serpent, are fighting each other for being my favorite.
Such a beautiful song. I love how medieval it sounds!
More Victorian than medieval.
How weird it sounds is why its so good. Yes the medieval is cool and the cover art helps so much.
Was only listening to this album this morning. "play me old King Cole, that I may join with you".
The Musical Box 🎶📦, An Excellent & Awesome Masterpiece From The Best Band Of The World!!!!! Thanks Genesis, You're The Best!!!!! GENESIS FOREVER!!!!! 🎤🎸🎹🎸🥁🎼
purchased two years after its release, but no one at the time told you that you had bought something old,
(as is done today when a song lasts two days and then is thrown away) because 50 years later it is still not old
This era of Genesis is so underrated and I've yet to hear anything from this era on the radio and that's a shame
Just not commercial enough
Playing on the radio is a BAD thing. Pop is poison.
"Underrated"? My gosh do ya really think to listen prog-rock nowdays on the radio among Taylor Swift or Foo fighters?
A sacred work of rock and barroque.
Phil is such a good drummer
the best of all
This song is insane, even after all these years (8 years, not much) i still can't believe it, my favorite Genesis song and the one that converted me into this amazing group. I still haven't heard any song like this one and believe me that i have been searching A LOT, many obscure albums, nothing else is like this!
Supper's Ready?
Schimnesthai Check out the Genesis cover band called Genetics performing this live. They have a channel on RUclips.
@@757flyer I know them lol, i'm one of the first hundred subs, they're great and i was very close to going to one of their shows :(
Schimnesthai That’s great. I’ve been to several of their shows in Buenos Aires due to my job taking me there regularly. They play in nice venues and their shows are always very enjoyable. I’m a big fan.
@@757flyer That's excelent, i discovered them last year through youtube and even though i'm not far from them, i haven't been able to watch them... i was also pissed because Carl Palmer from ELP was like 30 minute in bus from my house 2 years ago and i wasn't aware of him doing tours at the time, i have missed so many gigs from my favorite artists, how to remedy that once the pandemic ends.

This unparalleled masterpiece’s last two minutes are one of the things worth living for ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I was in my early teens when Genesis came to Brazil. They had a concert in Rio (too far for me to go) but I did listened to the whole concert live ON THE RADIO!!! Still get goose bumps when I think about it.
What a fuckin' masterpiece !!!
I'm just getting into the progressive years of Genesis ; the years that Peter Gabriel waZ with them, and I'm really, really loving it. I've been a fan of GabrielZ since the US record came out in the early 90'Z. But tracks like Watcher, Cinema Show, and my two favorites... The Knife and The Musical Box are giving me a ton of enjoyment. 🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍🥁🥁🥁 and being a lifelong drummer, I'm getting a lot to woodshed to!!!
La mejor banda del rock progresivo!!

Wonderful album. Phil Collins and Steve Hackett making the difference! ❤️🎶🎧
Indeed
Absolutely! Listen to The Knife, live 1973. The difference is incredible. I have no idea, and I frankly don't care, who the best prog rock (and later pop rock) drummer is/was, Phil is my all time favorite.
they bot composed in tgese times.
It's a wonderful team chemistry, from writing to playing. Purely outstanding!!
Steve Hackett is in concert next year get ready.
First time I saw the album cover I was preparing myself to listen to something memorable. And so it was, and it is, and it will be,forever and ever. When I' m alone at home I listen to this song like a puryfing moment, a jump in the past to restart myself.
Totally! I can recenter myself listening to this song. Completely resets my mood, thoughts, wishes, etc.
Masterpiece of progressive rock
I love that drum kick at 8:40.
Every era of this band is absolutely amazing...why they aren't put up with The Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin, etc as the greatest rock bands ever I'll never know
ALLNEWSUX : They are......
They are... for those who appreciate incredible songwriting, serious musicianship, great vocals, and an impeccable ensemble performance!
I never understood too, but I think that is about the very nature of progressive, that is not a easy listening as rock/blues (Zeppelin, that I love) or pop (Beatles, Stones, almost worthless in my taste).
Oh, I starting my discovery to this amazing Band.
And I'm looking forward to all their songs. So far Trespass was an awesome album, I don't get why it was never so considerate it so. This track is also Terrific as fuck, and let me tell you, Zeppelin are on the same level as greatness like Genesis in my opinion, as for Beatles well I think they are pretty much overrated as hell, tracks so short I can't even focus on one song that immediately comes the other. Stones the same.
So to me, Genesis and Zeppelin must be considerate as all time Greats, in my opinion.
@@mirkopanichi461 Almost worthless?! Yeah, sure.
Huge huge huge 💎✨👑👑🥶
One of the best songs with Firth of Fifth
Il primo album dei Genesis che ho ascoltato e amato .....avevo12 anni.
This was my first Genesis song of this early period.still one of my favourites and the gateway to hear all the other Genesis work.
A masterpiece.
A wonderful Musical Box 🎸🎸🎸🎸. 1971-2020 Great to hear Peter Gabriel voice 🎤🎤🎤. Supper`s ready , close the eyes and enjoy!!!!!!!😃
200 years from now ,, young Boys ask his Grandpa ""Grandpa how did they create such Amazing Composition" I Dont know Son May be They came from Another Planet ,,,,
When I was about 9 (around the year 1995) I used to listen to this record to sleep. It was the first CD I had bought.
A true classic!! Vocals and musicianship superb!
This album and A Trick of the Tail are tied for first place in the Genesis catalogue. Other great albums...but these two are standouts. Progressive Art, really. An era that can likely never be replicated.
never
A Trick Of The Tail is much better than this album, Nursery Cryme is overrated. Although, The Musical Box is maybe the best song Genesis has ever made. But in a overall sense, this album is not as good as some other albums that most people consider as the same level or even not better than Nursery Cryme
Selling England by the Pound and Foxtrot are their best albums as far as I'm concerned
@@klozz2080 I'm sorry, this is a great song, but The Fountain of Salmacis is just as good.
@@delby66 the fountain of salmacis is incredible too but this one is better
One of the best songs of all time
Beautiful progresiv, , amazing songs ,thank you Genesis ❤ getings from Poland 😀
Such talented young guys who never got the recognition they deserved
Well, not until decades later I suppose
Genesis and romantic yd best prog bands by far listening to music this for 38 years still my favorite album by Genesis
As a college radio DJ in the 70's I fell in love with Genesis during their Foxtrot-Nursery Crime period because their long album cuts like this one would allow me to go pull a few more LP's out of the stacks for the next hour. So I heard this and many others more times than most long songs. Very best of the Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks time.
The best Song of Genesis
This song is a roller-coaster of emotion, very powerful and evocative, great credentials for Phil and Steve.
This is what got me into prog-rock. I only knew the term "art rock" when I first got into this kind of music.
what an incredible arrangement! this song is just fabulous from start to finish!
I'm going on 66 in June and this is always one of my favorites along with the cinema show and many many more.😍☺😊😍😁😊😍🎉😔
I'm 65 now Ken and I'd have to include Firth of Fifth just for Steve's great guitar solo, but they are probably my 3 favourite songs by this great band.
I was 12 in 1973 and I love this song
Mein absoluter lieblings Song! Von allen Liedern der Band! ❤❤❤ danke Genesis!❤❤❤

There is not a moment of this song that is not a painful foreboding. Some have commented that was part of Gabriel's life at the time. But it certainly hit.
