What a band! Amazing all of them, 5 incredible musicians, putting together a hell of a song, with so much beauty, complexity and tragic disturbance in one piece
What a fantastic surprise to stumble upon this -- my favourite Genesis song from their most original and creative art rock period, with the incomparable Peter Gabriel as frontman. There's something indescribably weird and sinister about Peter's vocals, costumes and miming here, which is what initially attracted me to early Genesis. This particular song has a nightmarish quality to it that I have always found intriguing. The performance has lost none of its freshness and appeal over the decades. Steve Hackett's guitar lines are uniquely structured, edgy and thrilling. The band gels together superbly. Great, imaginative drumming and harmony singing by Phil and fabulously spiky synth soloing by Tony Banks. One of my deepest regrets is that I didn't go to see Genesis live in this period because I hadn't yet fully twigged on to how brilliant they were. I would also have loved to see them on the 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' tour. It wasn't until PG had departed that I finally saw them live, on the 'A Trick of the Tail' tour at the Hammersmith Odeon in June 1976. Bill Bruford -- my favourite drummer at that time -- was supporting Phil. It was a great evening, but Phil's vocals were not very strong and often out of tune.
So often people think of only the 80's and the hugely commercially successful Genesis - but this was the magic and honestly, at the time it came out, very few of us appreciated just how amazing this band, this line up was!

In San Luis, it was transmitted on channel 13 from Yuma if I remember correctly, right after a 15-minute-long boring program called "Midnight Rap".
@@pedroi9008 I was 10 too! But I was in San Antonio TX. You won't hear anything like THIS at his show but I'm sure you will have a BLAST!
@@pedroi9008 wow ! Love this response, paisanos ! Geographically and Musically…indeed , channel 13 or 9
Phil is just amazing. With that little drum set he makes a huge and not simplistic sound. One of the best drummers ever in rock music. great video and sound quality.
not so little. 2 racks, 2 floor toms. .. Lots of cymbals. Same as most people, more than some less than others.
One of the best drummers ever, ..regardless of genre
He messed up his neck with the singing posture looking off to the side like you can see here so I remember his saying.
The point is, he was / is a fantastic drummer,, however many drum pieces he had. Understand now? @@morbidmanmusic
If you want drum stuff on a budget try Mike Shrieve in Santana. Insane!
Saw Peter just last week in Canada and he is still the great showman/artist . Mind blowing show
Saw him last night in Milwaukee 😉👍. STELLAR performance!! ❤
I worry that he mimes now
Nay he doesn't mime , over dubs at live shows maybe
This is an act, a masterpiece, a music all in one performance.
Seeing them deliver this live in the 70s is my greatest musical memory. Astounding talent
@2:50. Hearing those two iconic voices combined🤍 Very complimentary of each other. I know of 80s Gabriel and Collins as a kid, but how nice to go back in time to see and learn this history
It makes me sad that this will never be again, these times my god nothing and no one will get anywhere near this brilliance, from Trespass to The Lamb wow how fortunate I was to be a young man listening to that in the early 70s and 50 years later still listening to it.🐐
sad thing is to think music stopped growing when your tastes stopped growing. Stuck in your hayday. It happens ... I can't argue the brilliance of the early Genesis. But I can't compare it to any other era, as they all are important and important to someone.
As a producer and musician of 45+ years, this can't be not said... It is sad.
@morbidmanmusic Sorry to disillusion anyone, but there is absolutely nothing today that has either the creativity or musical coherence of the prog-rock era. Porcupine Tree as close as we got. Or pop below anything to contradict, and I'll have a listen gladly. Love and Peace. ❤
I know what you mean, seems like only yesterday. Where does the time go? And then you die!
@@morbidmanmusicI hope you are not part of the 'formulaic' music that is being pumped out today. There is still creative music in all genres but loses to the mind-numbing xeroxed garbage.

Genesis ‘70-‘75, the best!
This show was the highlight of my week. I was allowed to stay up late and watch it every weekend. What made it even better was my mom went to bed so I had the whole downstairs to myself! THis and Don Kirchners Rock Concert were everything to me! Thank you for sharing this obviously great once a kind band!! I miss these days so much.
Never thought I'd see this in such good quality and uploaded by a official source. Thank you so much! This is a real gift for Genesis fans like myself ❤

I was a teenager in 1973 ... and after having immersed myself in the Beatles ... discover Genesis who have accompanied me to this day. Then Aqualung, In the court, Made in Japan, Tubular Bells, The dark side, Led Zeppelin IV, Fragile... what a fantastic journey! Nice video thanks !
VERY similar experience here!
And Emerson, Lake and Palmer would take you into another galaxy in some other universe. That is a fantastic journey also.
@@undergroundwarrior70 Yes i'm totally agree with you.
All amazing albums, I own them all.
@@undergroundwarrior70 I own every one of their albums, I think Tarkus might be my favourite, but love quite a few of them.
When I was a younger lad...I was never much into Genesis...but watching this I can really see how effing amazing they are. The theatricality...the technicality...the musicianship...the arrangements...and how they all play together so well. A real gem of a band...and these shows are really well produced and recorded. Sound quality is surprisingly good.
I was a young hippy at 16 years old when I first heard this and still like hearing this at 67🏴🏴🏴🎸🏴🇺🇲😁☮️👍
Hippie….😂😂😂😂😂
Ahh I was enamored with hippies!! I was about 9 when this came out.
Awesome! Thank you so much for posting this excellent video of an amazing performance by the best art rock band of the seventies (or ever!). The Genesis Live album helped me through my time in Germany as an airman in the US Air Force and traveling all over Europe during my free time.
Phil's harmonies....pitch perfect and smooth as silk. 😍
Indeed...Considering Peter & Phil's Vocals Sound Rather Similar[To Me At Least]...One Sometimes Can't Tell Unless Seeing Them Perform...
Yeah, that back-up singer sounds like he has some potential...
🤣😂@@paulm749
@@ELPCOTILLION-SD1970Similar for sure, even EXACT in some songs...to me anyways 😉
Back in the early 80s, when i was in junior high, just getting into old Genesis for the first time after discovering them with their 'Genesis' album, i honestly couldn't tell the difference sometimes.
Wow, amazingly rare footage of early Genesis, thank you Midnight Special!
And pristine color corrected HD footage at that. Never thought I’d see this.
The most 70's thing ever! This is a rock opera.
64 years old and I was sooo fortunate to have grown up in the Prog years… All the bands were unbelievably talented.. I have to say my favorite band was Ian Anderson - JT
This is the Genesis I loved. It felt like I was getting away with something when I watched Midnight Special.
For guys like me who have been listening to Genesis since we were kids in the 70s this is an extraordinary revelation. We’ve watched the grainy copies on VHS, but this proves to us that the band we have always been so proud of was even more exquisite on stage than we could have imagined.
Peter Gabriel is just incredible in this performance.
Peter Gabriel is incredible with any performance
Wow! I’ve heard the Musical Box hundreds of times. But watching this video, I wasn’t prepared for how touching and disturbing Peter’s “She is a lady” bit was. Thank you for posting this!
Shades of Savile
I remember seeing this live in London as a 15 year old wasn’t sure what I was witnessing a obsolete masterpiece. How uncanny that the Old Man now resembles Phil all these years later 👴🏻👴🏻👌
agree completely, genuinely disturbing although an amazing performance.
Amazing, these guys are just unbelievible geniuses. What does the old man persona means in the song's context?
@@diogomori9624 Nursery Cryme album tells the story. Basically Cynthia on the front cover, chops off young Henrys head with a croquet mallet. A short while later she finds his Musical Box plays it and the ghost of Henry appears who begins to age rapidly.
There is a God! This is great. Thank you, Midnight Special.
no, there isn't, but this is great.
What a privilege to have grown up with the Beatles and other great groups in the Late sixties and then the seventies with all the great bands like Genesis , Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes Jethro Tull and others. Saw Genesis with the Lamb lies down in Rotterdam in 75, with Gabriel of course. Unforgettable , I was 16 at the time.
This really shows what a great, emotive, and unique delivery Peter Gabriel has as a singer. Wow.
I'm so lucky to have been alive at that time. Midnight Special was a once in a lifetime phenomenon and Genesis Was one of the most creative bands ever.
A truly live performance. Credit to the producers for allowing the guys the creative freedom to perform the whole song live and the visual and sound guys for a clear visual and sound.
Almost the whole song! You can see Peter grabbing his flute at 1:30 in preparation for his solo, then putting it right down when he realizes they've moved on to the guitar/organ solo section.
@@FacePomagranate
Good point. The slow part with flute and guitars was omitted. Still, not mimed.
@@briane5706 Not mimed but I believe there may have been a couple of takes. Notice Hackett breaks a string towards the beginningbut at 4:44 the string is repaired and right before the downbeat you notice Tony waiting for the cue to stop. I wonder if Hackett was unable to play the latter half of the instrumental wihtout that string.
That's what you call CREATIVITY !!😁👍
This and "Watcher..." were taped in Dec. 1973 when the band was in L.A. performing at the Roxy for the "Selling England By The Pound" tour. Interesting that they didn't perform "I Know What I like..." , as most t.v appearances were tied to album promotions (it was different back then). GREAT restoration by all of you at the Midnight Special channel. Thanks, Burt!! See you at the Dodger game...
Peter - what a showman. And what a unique voice! The talent level on stage was incredible.
Prog Rock at it's finest. I hardly ever watched the Midnight Special in real time because they put on acts about which I did not care. This is amazing, revelatory and perfect. How tight, how musical. How totally odd.
HOLY SH!T!!!!!
This is amazing!
Peter Gabriel was one freaky dude!
Musically, they all had their own way of expressing themselves.
Phil Collins was one kick-butt drummer!
Happy Friday 🥳 Thank you for sharing! 💖
WAS?! He’s STILL a freaky dude!
He's on tour right now!
@rcpsammy7186 Thank you for sharing that information. He isn't the only one touring right now. A lot of the oldies but goodies are back on stage! Isn't that awesome ?!! 🙌

@@WhyTheHorseface I can't disagree. He was definitely unique!! 👌
So..

I’m rediscovering Genesis with Peter Gabriel, and just can’t get The Musical Box out of my head, truly superb
This is incredible! Great quality recording!
Peter's vocals and storytelling and Phil's drumming! This lineup was the best.
FInally! Genesis performing from the Nursery Cryme era with a competent director who knew how to show the whole band and not just Gabriel hitting a tamborine.
I'm amazed he was able to keep up!
This is Selling England By The Pound era. Lamb Lies Down tour would begin later in the year.
The camera man missed Hackett's taping.
@@pablodufranc I reckon it was deliberate so as to not embarrass Hackett as Eddie Van Halen would have dubbed that bit in for Hackett no doubt. Ha Ha Ha. Yes it was a shame for the camera to hone in on Hackett's face at that particular moment. They did that face filming far too much back in the good old days.
@@valhallacoldwind3362 I agree. In the same way, in this video we can see how the camera point to another musician while other are playing a solo. A sign of that music filming era.
At 15 years old, got a live cassette with this song. The music was so interesting. Almost 50 years later I find this video. 😮 wow Thank you so much for this experience midnight special.
What a jewel of song!!! Thank you, Midnight Special ❤
Absolute masterclass..... Will never grow old brilliant performer and entertainer Mr Gabriel, and can can we take a moment to give Phil Collins respect, .... Its hard to think 50 years in the business respect ❤
This was my junior year of college. I’ve been listening to these guys 50 years.
There’s always a battle in my mind for who the greatest Prog band is. Until I see this incarnation of Genesis. Then there’s no contest.
Same here, still on the fence Genesis or Gentle Giant, love them equally.
The most theatrical performance I have ever seen.
Got to see this very rendition back in 73 at the Palladium in NYC on 14th & 3rd This and Suppers Read and Wardrobe and Watcher and Moonlit Knight and so many more and before that night I had never heard a single Genesis song. I mean WOW, just WOW
I don't know how to put into words the whole Genesis/Peter Gabriel/Phil Collins/Mike and the Mechanics vibe ebbing and flowing from the early 70s through to the early 90s. They were all together, and individually, on musical point. I love them all so much.
Absolutely incredible 👏
This is musical mastery

Long live Genesis !
Historic day for genesis fans.
With Gabriel, Genesis was so unbelievably Great!!!!

Without him they don t exisr
Forever and ever. Long live to Peter Gabriel Era
Well this is just fantastic!
Genesis were a great live band. All superb musicians.
Pure and simple, this is art.
Unbelievable footage. My god this is gorgeous.
Peter was quite dramatic! 🤣
Love seeing all the guys together.
What a band! Amazing all of them, 5 incredible musicians, putting together a hell of a song, with so much beauty, complexity and tragic disturbance in one piece
His creative genius brought me to the music of Genesis in the early 70s !!!
Amazing! What a performance, Peter Gabriel is fantastic!
Hail to Burt Sugarman and his Midnight Special team! What a gem, superb quality. Genesis at their best. Bring on Watcher of the skies!!
You can call these masterpieces, because they truly are timeless.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Immer noch ein ohrenschmaus❤unglaublich gute Musik.....eine tolle Zeit 😊
One of the best performances of the old man I've seen Peter do.
Shepperton 1973 was even better.
Don’t you wish sometimes you could go back in time and see this live and all the other great bands of the times
