- Time to upload a few videos from the gabriel era. Sadly, most of these are already online, but this time, now in HD and more watchable :-)
I choosed this song because Nursery Cryme is my most favourite album from the Gabriel Era and Giant Hogweed is a such strong song. Steve and Phil are awesome, especially on this song. So enjoy it ;-)
BY THE WAY
Gonna focus on the gabriel era for the next time, BUT next week, i'm gonna start a special. Guess about what? :D Видеоклипы
Peter Gabriel was so pretty!
Tambem achei, mais lindo que minha filha !!
Everyone, (well...nearly everyone), is beautiful in their early 20's. Lol.
@@spiritwalker1988 kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
@@Chavez_Soria guess you’ve never seen Wendy Carlos with mutton chop sideburns then, Peter
Wendy Gabriel
Steve hackett was ahead of time. He introduced a completely different role for the guitar in a rock band. While other guitarists were the stars, he sat on the side ,playing guitar sounds never heard before.
Off course..It's true.Hackett with big tranquility playing in marvelous way.
And people think Eddie Van Halen invented tapping on guitar.
what about phils playing? He's playing some crazy stuff and he's just chillin'
@@briano.1503 tapping has been around since there were fretboards. "Spanish" guitar/flamenco incorporated the technique. Les Paul used it as well as "sweeps" in the 1940's and 50's.
MOST OF PROGRESSIVE ROCK BAND WERE 50 YEARS AHEAD OF TIME!
The boys are 22 years old in 1972. Great performance at such a young age!
Me thinks they put in a few hours of practice, eh? What an ensemble.
I was thinking the exact same thing watching this
Phil is 21 here.
All these old clips need an official authoritative release from genesis on dvd and blu-ray, we must preserve the peter Gabriel Era and find all unreleased footage
Very few American even knew who GENESIS was in '72. I was right there in the POCKET. I saw them at the SHRINE in L.A. Nursery Chyme, FOX TROT, LAMB... GENESIS w/ GABRIEL is simply the BEST !!
Steve Hackett is tapping at the beginning of the track, years before Van Halen.
If you look closely, you'll see that Steve is pick-tapping, not too uncommon at that time. Eddie refined it a bit.
The actual technique is as old as Guitars. Niccolò Paganini , more famous for his violin compositions used the technique on the violin, but he was actually a guitarist by trade and wrote a number of Guitar sonatas that used the technique which he is believed to have learned from Gypseys at the tavern he liked to drink and perform guitar pieces at (He didnt like playing guitar for regular classical audiences, performing just to do his thing at the bar for anyone who cared to listen.. In other words Paganini was the original 1700s guitar shredder lol
Andres Segovia was doing it long before this
@Greg L comparing EVH with Steve Hackett is really funny. Steve Hackett is THE guitarrist of the Prog Rock, created a new genre. EVH is only EVH
@@urielrael Ignore the idiots. Hackett was and still is an amazingly talented and inventive guitarist. And so under-rated.
They are all just sitting there and Peter is doing cartwheels across the stage. Insane. The musicianship of this band always amazes me each and every time I hear Genesis.
You could listen to their music over and over and hear different pieces everytime amazing never gets old
Like the Harry Potter of bands
Look how in 1972 Steve Hackett copies Eddie Van Halen's guitar tap style that Eddie invented in 1980.
The first time I saw Genesis was this tour. They are the masters of progressive theatrical rock. Gabriel is in a rarified club with David Bowie and Alice Cooper.
Studied AC theatrics...lived with Bowie...grabbed the audiences!
Saw Genesis in '73 with Gabriel in his daisy-head, box-head, etc etc... also seen Jethro Tull several times and although both were excellent I have to say that I think Tull were the masters of the Theatrical Rock genre. Alice Cooper was up there, but Bowie followed way behind both in Performance and music.
This video should really be called "Peter Gabriel being iconic for five minutes straight"
Mary Smile it really shouldn’t
@@footballfm958 It was just a joke, my dude
Yes😩💅
Peter is so handsome and so pretty at the same time
😂 yes, yes it should
Band straordinaria nel periodo Gabriel. Nell'agosto del 72 erano a Feltre 30 km da casa mia.
Avrei dato nn so che per vederli. ...ahimè avevo due anni.
La miglior prog Band di sempre!
They interact divinely with each other. I consider it the most complete and experimental band in the history of progressive music.
I take it you never heard of King Crimson?
hello Thomas, yes I know them but I much prefer Peter Gabriel's Genesis
@@gianniguerriero I did as well as a teenager in the 70’s but as an adult, King Crimson-especially the three albums: Larks Tongues in Aspic; Starless and Bible Black and Red, are so much more complex and interesting. Give it another try
Hi Thomas, I love the brilliance of Robert Fripp, his guitar playing so innovative and sophisticated. I especially love: The New World 1986 (Frippertronics). About the albums you told me about, they are really very interesting. Regarding Gabriel's Genesis, you know this track: ruclips.net/video/e4HfFwVy-h0/видео.html
@@gianniguerriero I’m not old enough to have seen the Gabriel-era Genesis ( missed it by a year or two ), but I did see the Wind & Wuthering tour. At the end, when they start Apocalypse in 9/8, it was like a religious experience. Are you Italian? Living in Italy? Have you heard Matteo Mancuso from Palermo? He is the most spectacular guitarist I’ve heard since Allan Holdsworth! Also, if you like very early Genesis, Big Big Train is excellent.
Belgian television, the first continental country to realize the huge talent of those guys in the early 70's
Huge talent, that’s why they spelt Giant wrong lol GEANT 🤣
No. The first was my beloved Italy!!
Pasquale Muzzupappa yes piper club wasn’t it?
@@Eleventhearlofmars You"re right! Bravo!
Italy was big on them, as well.
still, after all these years songs about invasive plant species are scarce
Yes, we NEED 1 about Sweet Pitt! Weed on! \m/
funny! but let's consider that it might be an allegory...in the vein of john barlycorn or mr. brownstone. sometimes we got clever...in between bong hits and chasing unshaved snatch. good times
Scarce , but not unknown ...ruclips.net/video/I2QKSJaDNNo/видео.html
I believe Its a fecking conspiracy to keep humanity unaware of the dangers of these invasive plant species. And it has unfortunately worked. When I try and discuss this subject with family and friends they refuse to accept this possibility and just laugh it off, just another sign of the dumbing down process.
@@tripzville7569 LOL!
An incredibly talented group way ahead of their time!
That was a Realistic 4 channel line mixer sitting on the keyboard. I never thought I'd see one of those again. Wow.
I have never seen Steve Hackett wearing glasses before. This video is like Genesis came and set up in your living room and played for you.
There's a photo of him wearing those glasses inside the Foxtrot gatefold. Those and the beard made him look about 15 years older.
pschroeter1 He used to wear the glasses live all the time up until they started touring for Selling England.
He wore those glasses from the start until at least the Lamb tour.
I think Hackett was finger tapping before EVH. EVH def showed the world how to finger tap though.
@@wsmith1213 I'm pretty sure he was, but I also think there was some jazz guitarist I can't name who did it first. Brian May of Queen also gets mentioned a lot. Eddie took tapping to stratospheric new heights though.
Absolutely astounding. Love this song. Genesis were pure class.
"Giant Hogweed lives!!"
It’s power is growing!
One of my all time favorites with a powerful epic ending.
This is as good as it gets. 1972 Gabriel kicks ass.
The end of this song is so dark and powerfull. They came from another planet. Fan since i can remember.
True! This is also dark and sinister ruclips.net/video/SfukKJna93k/видео.html

There was an article in the press recently about dangerous plants lurking in the British countryside!! The explanation about one plant was all in this song! Fantastic performances by all of the band and thanks for posting.
Phil Collins on Steve Hackett's guitar playing: "Technique wise, Steve is probably above average, nothing special, but when it comes to creativity and getting any kind of sound out of the guitar, there is nobody better at it than Steve."
The lack of attention the great Hackett got in this video because he didn’t gyrate and bust up guitars like Townsend is analogous to the lack of attention he got his whole career.
Seriously? Comparing The Who to Genesis is like dating Sophia Vergara while cheating on her with Halle Berry. Say WHAT?!?
4:48 and 4:59 I love how Phill Collins is just chilling in the back not even struggling on this crazy masterpiece. This is by far the best version of this song
He was a Top Ten Drummer up with Bill Bruford.I mean come on Both were in Brand X.Top Rock and Fusion Drummers bar none not top mention Progressive .
Never gets old.
Brings back memories of the concerts I saw back in the day .
Saw Genesis 6 times four with Peter Gabriel including the Lamb
The intro and the ending of this song are out of this world
It's true.Always I thinking the same.
I agree and I wish the ending was much much much longer. The whole thing in fact, longer.
Everybody's pickin and a grinnin on this one!
Indeed. This guy's apperance changed alot after he left Genesis, and not for the better. He became a huge fat blob in his 30s and remained that way.
ca n'existe plus des chefs d'œuvres pareils............j'adore ....du grand art....🤩
Pete was crazy as a loon back then but they were way ahead of everyone.
Your comment is way ahead of everyone.
Forget tapping (and please stop mentioning f*cking Van Halen!!) That blend of Mellotron and Hammond on the outro is both sinister and uplifting. Magical.
fromthemakersof- Aha ahahah! I was thinking the same thing about people constantly mentioning EVH ad nauseam.
YES! SINISTER!! ruclips.net/video/SfukKJna93k/видео.html
Spot on. .awesomeness! !!
Those are the two words I've been looking for. Sinister and uplifting is such a powerful combination and this song nails it.
Mitico brano, stupendo!
Why do 90% of all rock videographers make the same mistake of focusing on everything but the soloist? Still, this is a mighty, mighty video and I am glad you shared it. Cheers!
"Mighty, hogweed!"
It is based on the non-musicianship of most camera men. At the California Jam they complained that the Eagles were "boring" to watch so they added all kinds of nonsense. Their ideas of "presentation" do not include the realities or dynamics of a rock performance. We are lucky with most live vids to see anything except the singer's face...
Bought a Paul Weller concert video from a few years ago and I couldnt get through it. They switched cameras so fast and so frequently that it stressed me out. Thought I was going to have a seizure.
Lack of musicians directing the videos. Plus all the jump cuts and video effects to look more "psychedelic". They loved shooting tight shots of the faces, too.
The cameraman seemed really enamored with the singer, and they weren't even using crazy masks on this one.
The last section of the song is one of the most powerful in all types of music
The song really comes together when Mike Rutherford adds the bass in. The first two verses are very powerful.👍
Too cool! Phil is knocking it out. Peter is amazing as well.
You can see Phil's poor posture (hunched over), though. Drummer's should keep an upright posture or suffer the consequences over time.
I once had a conversation with somebody who had read in an interview with Iron maiden's Steve Harris that Genesis and the Golden Earring were his main influences on getting Maiden's style together.
He said "I get the Golden earring connection but I don't get the Genesis connection." at which I showed him this very clip and he went "Ah, now I get it!"
The most notorius Harris'es influences are,in my opinion,Genesis and Jethro Tull
(Sorry if my english sucks xD)
The guitarist for Iron Maiden said that Hacketts outro for Fountain of Salmacis was the best piece of guitar work he's ever heard.
Amazing, remember these guys never did any drugs.
There's no doubt the the Uriah Heep song "Easy Living" had a huge influence on Steve Harris and the early Iron Maiden sound, as well.
Every maiden fan knows the roots are to find in thin lizzy...
The state of Hackett’s Hogweed on the move guitar sound interpretation! Brilliant!
They're not human! ❤️😭
So perfect and epic!!!
Love Peter a lot ❤️❤️
I’m not gay, but …
Oh my goodness - Steve Hackett for the WIN on this track! Thanks for posting!
I first watched this video about 35 years ago. Never gets old.....
Please note Eddie van Halen (and his fans), the intro shows Steve Hackett tapping. The album with this song on is Nursery Chryme circa 1971. Check out The Musical Box as well.
ummmm.. Allan Holdsworth infleunced EVH.
Gwen Sciora, Maybe so but Steve Hackett was "tapping" long before Eddie and it's documented on video. Eddie just made it popular because Van Halen was......more popular.
Jimmy Webster was the father of "tapping." Great guitarist hired by Gretsch in the '50s to go out and promote the 6120 and White Falcon and all the great Gretsch guitars.
Brian Edward Even Hackett admits he didn't invent it, only developed it.
Matt James There were even rock guys in the late 60s doing it, but it was just bullshitting around during live solos. Hackett was probably the first rock player to use tapping for composition.
The intro of this song is insane, so good!
This is when Genesis was cool.
now they're rich.. sadly that says a lot about the "industry" and humans attention spans.
Oh férias de verão nos anos 70 que maravilha de musical, que lembranças maravilhosas tenho de Ubatuba nessa época hoje estou com 66 anos bem vividos.
A masterpiece by these genius young lads.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I was 14 in 72 and saw this tour in Bham England .just awesome just watched Gabriel in London O2 with stepson what a gift he is. great post. thank you.
Electric guitar Tapping Guitar of Steve Hackett creator , and wow at 3:09 Historic guitar , thanks Steve !
God Steve Hacett create tapping Guitar
Yeah... no. Guitarists have been doing tap and pull-offs for a long time. Anyone who has picked up a guitar learns that both techniques create a new sound with a few hours... I did when I was 8 back in the early 60's and was playing around with my sister's acoustic. The difference is figuring out to use it effectively... that's where guys like Beck, Hackett, and obviously EVH shine. Go back and find some old Roy Buchanan albums, he influenced more guitarists than most.
I would love to give Hackett credit for inventing tapping but as stated by w. white it has been around a long time.I heard that Django was a Tapper from way back.I can't verify but I did read it somewhere.
@@thomassabino5440 I believe you are correct
The way these guys gelled musically, professionally and personally is what makes them so great together and individually. The smile on Peters face not just shows what the music meant to each other but also how they coordinated on stage. Each did as solos, just as well as with in the band. Was really glad to know that to this day they know who they were and as solo artist, again who they are now. Peter not wanting to do a reunion is understandable due to the great work he did after leaving and Phil, bless his heart could be wheeled out in a hospital bed to perform and that would be ok, he deserves it. Finally, Steve's current band and he are spot on.
meravigliosi,il più grande gruppo prog della storia e non solo

great performance. I love all of them, PG is such a great artist, Phil Collins, Hackett, Rutherford, Banks...

Same here, 56 now, but feel 10 listening again to that cool vinyl with the near artwork on the cover!
Nice one Frank - nursery crime was the first album I heard - thought it strange at the time but could not get enough! Luv them particularly PG years. Hard to pin a fav but the lamb has to be top and the song blood on the rooftops off wind and wuthering is quite special to me 👍
Also frank you are bang on about the artwork - it was great back then when we had something tangible even the vinyl itself on Seconds out was thicker on the edge than the norm which I liked oddly! What we have gained in quality of sound we have sadly lost elsewhere. Peace dude ✌️

This is music. What an intro.
Interesting group. Will hope they, or various members go onto great international success.
This is what you call a jam session.
Not really, this is a showcase of a band who rehearsed for hours on end to get it right.
Actually, just the opposite. Every note is written out including the guitar solo
