Friend, I really congratulate you, you have played one of the most complex pieces of Tony Banks. It's wonderful to have the opportunity to see all the fantastic things you play from Banks. You are the best. From Chile ♥️💯
So glad to see a younger person appreciate and pull off the intricacies of Tony's playing and arrangement. I can remember so many times in our band when I was asked to learn old Genesis and I thought I was done with the song and I would just repeat the previous section and then...Nooo. Tony changed the chords again and doesn't play them the same way (inversions) and with different tonics. Made me crazy. But crazy in love!
Bro. You are a badass. This is played so well, exactly like the album! Tony Banks wrote such fantastic keyboard parts, it's just great to watch someone who can play them so spot on.
yeah those octave/5th arpeggios are a simple idea but really really difficult to keep going - I've always found I have to concentrate really hard rather than rely on my fingers to do it for themselves
Veramente complimenti!!!!!!
Really well done (seriously). Its difficult stuff. Not so much in isolation, but to do in one take. I used to play all this when I was a teen. Didnt sound quite as good as I had a Crumar Road runner Piano and a Korg CX3 organ. Also my Korg 700S was no ARP pro Soloist I could never do anything for long without ballsing it up, so dont apologize
Thanks a lot ! Yeah this is so true, this song is not that hard. But to play it perfectly in one take, this is hard. And the hardest part was to transcribe what exactly Tony Banks plays, especially at the end part during the Mellotron + Hammond solo. Also yes I must apologize because it's the first time that i'm not able to do it in one take for my channel and I hate the covers where there is too much edit.
@@MathGsr I recently saw Tony talking to Rick Wakeman and he said he was playing the start of Firth of Fifth live and that he went for the high note on his stage piano and it wasn't 88 keys and he completely missed and stopped dead. Hard to believe but even Banks is only human
@@turnerthemanc 100% True. Tony stopped playing Firth intro live because on the RMI EP without velocity and with only 61 keys it was unfair, but mostly because he always messed this intro. I think since the 1974 tour, Tony never played again Firth intro and I was so disapointed in 2007
Nice job, love the earlier stuff from a keyboardist POV. The chords ( Diminished. - Augmented. ) he uses are unique in the rock music world. Any desire to do additional songs from the Nursery Cryme - Selling England period? I love learning those songs with help from the internet. Thanks.
I'm so glad to help you :) My main goal at the moment is to do the whole Supper's ready ! Then, I think I did the most important songs from Nursery cryme. The last one I will do from this album is The Fountain of salmacis I think. From Selling England, Firth is coming soon and Dancing with the moonlit knight will also come once the 1973 Live will be over. But before there will be a little break with the Trespass Era which is my favorite :)
I'm really not happy about this video and especially the Pianet parts.. but anyway, thanks a lot mate ! I learned the pianet on my first keyboard, the CME UF50 (which you can see at right of my Hammond, standing on the wall), and it was just as tough imo. This part is a finger breaker :D Of course there is more coming !!
I used a lot of B3 emulators, some free like Vl122, azr3, collab3... And some expensive like Arturia B3 or Ik multimedia, And they never sounded as good as my Real Hammond L100 in my opinion. The most important thing is to make it go through a good Leslie emulation. For the drawbars settings, it's Always almost full open drawbars excepted for the 6, 7 and 8th Harmonics which are almost closed to increase the Perc sound. For songs like Looking for someone or stagnation you must change the drawbars settings during the song. Dont forget the Perc settings also.
@@MathGsr I have an X1-c and the IK Multimedia emulator (which personally I think sounds better). The Leslie is real good and when I dial down the key click it sounds close, but the transistors of the A-100 or B3 is still so different to me than the L100.. there was a free L100 VST floating around for windows but nothing for Mac. Wish someone would make an L100 emulator again!
Amazing! The organ sounded great. Is that an L-100? And, did you build that RMI keyboard thing? If so, it sounds great. I still don’t know how you play your left hand parts so scrunched up. Ah, youth….
Thanks mate haha I remember your first comment on The Brazilian 😂 my hand is still fine ! It's not an RMI, the RMI electra piano was used by Tony Banks only After 1974. It's Hohner Pianet N, with an extra fuzz pedal (midi pedal for me), used from the very beginning of Genesis to 1974 :)
Absolutely amazing Mathieu. I have so many questions. I love it when folks like yourself take the Tony Banks experience to other heights. What a treat this is. That Pianet and Organ are spot on. Are you running thm through a Leslie?? Thank you ever so much for sharing.
Thank you so much for this (as always) very kind comment. You are 100% right, everything even the Mellotron go through Leslie. The Pro Soloist is not connected for the moment and it won't be to the Leslie. As always i'm trying to make this channel a perfect place for any Genesis fan and more for a Tony Banks fan, or a keyboardist who wants to learn Genesis parts !
I don't get how you can decipher everything. It all sounds spot on. Incredible work. You tend to rush a little bit sometimes, can it be/? I know it is difficult if you are not playing with a band at the same time. Do you have a Genesis cover band?
I play along live version on my headphone, and the pretty poor quality of the records give a rush effect on some parts. And considering that I play along rushed parts, I must rush on the keyboard too. So yes you can sometimes notice it!
Thanks a lot ! The Leslie is the key to make the Pianet sound like this, I discovered it not so long ago and sadly after the record of Musical Box which would have sounded way better.. Anyway, i'm not using a real fuzz pedal. The sound from the Pianet goes directly to the soundcard on the computer, then I apply a fuzz emulation on this sound. The On/off switch behind the Pianet is a midi button to turn the fuzz emulation on/off on the computer ! Then the sound after the fuzz goes directly to Leslie speaker : (Pianet -> Fuzz -> Leslie). I'm doing the same with the Hammond, he is modifed with a Jack output which allows me to record it pretty well as you can ear ! Maybe I should do a video to show and explain everything :D
Hey I really like the fact how do you use vintage gear to re-create the sounds also are you eventually going to cover songs like fountain of salmacis and in to deep?
Thanks a lot ! Nothing Can beat the original vintage stuff to recreate original vintage sounds ;) Of course, Salmacis is coming with Firth and Supper's ready. In too deep will be way later
Further proof that Tony Bank’s’ keyboard playing is not only genius but also the perfect music for hockey games
I am very pleased that a young and talented person like you is interested in GENESIS! from Japan.
Genesis is definitely my whole life !
Wow so glad to have japanese here, you're from my favorite and dream country :)

Yes ! The background audio track is from live 73 record

How did you get Tony Banks entire live setup?
Time, money, work.. and lot of passion above all ^^
