Although rarely played nowadays, it is my #1 Genesis song. Composed by Tony Banks, it shows the high class of music they were able to play and perform. it never ranked in the charts as number 1 hit of the band. Musical success does not always coincide with chart hits.

There will never be a band like Genesis again. I miss looking forward to a new album and playing it repeatedly. I knew every nuance of all the instruments and sang all the vocals with Peter, then Phil. Please cherish this band; we will never see the likes of them again.
Back when Phil was arguably the finest drummer / percussionist in the world. This also highlights Michael Rutherford. Anyone remember Smallcreep's Day? In this era (2024) I truly respect how Steve Hackett has preserved the music they composed prior to this. What an exceptional body of lifetime work. Amazing, ... Thank you all for enriching my life in so many ways.
I dont know how i missed this tune. I thought i had heard everything recorded by this lot! Thanks for posting this. Favourite music of all time. These artists are right up there with the beatles, floyd, and led zepplin. Todays music cant even come close.
Such a (beautifully) heavy song, and album. Loved the depths of And Then There Were Three, Wind & Wuthering, Trick of the Tail. Genesis may be done, but will always be remembered.
Although the song is a short one (in 1978 they had to make short songs so they could still be broadcasted on the radio, unfortunately) you can still feel this peculiar "Genesian" poetry which is undefinable with words. Very beautiful
Legendary song and album. Been a blast enjoying Phil's music, and what an inspiration he is with his music and Genesis. Wishing you all the best bud, and thank you for everything, and inspiring. One of my favorite tracks this is. Genesis is exteremly under-rated, espically with this album. True masterpiece.
I've never thought they were underated, it's just yes there are some but few who like all of Genesis but there's a distinct chance in style after " wind and Wuthering". Personally I didn't rate and then there etc. Each to their own , more power to you outta what You like. But they defo fell under the impression influence of Phil crying into his beer over a hell of a lot of songs. I personally can't think of a post Hackett genesis song that I can play again and again, Not like Cinema show or one for the vine or Squonk or Dance on a volcano. Been listening to this wonderful song since it was released and finally realised Tony plays bass on the piano from the start of Steve's wonderful guitar solo. Sheer Geniuses/Genesis.
I Really love how they play off each other. Also you can tell that one isn't bigger than the other.Mike that solo riff i could listen ro that all by itself. It's like eating the frosting off the cake before the cake is done. Mike your music is in a CLASS ALL BY ITSELF.!!! SURE BEAUTY!
Amen to that m8. I play keyboards, clarinet, saxophone, all of the recorders, flute, acoustic guitar and drums. I'm not boasting, the point I'm making is that I learned to play them at school!!!! How many kids today would be arsed??? Another old git and proud of it lol (well... 39 and nearly old)
It was on the BBC show Nationwide, and it showed them soundchecking at Knebworth in 1978. The show was included on the '...And Then There Were Three...' DVD which came with the reissue in 2007. Hope that helps you out.
On the ‘sound check’ stage version video showing Tony with the field background, a good Buddy of mine can be seen walking along side with his Buddy from New York City across the field to meet the children of the west! Phil also sparked a conversation with him at the Food Tent prior to that warm, bubbly pic of Phil holding two paper plates of food with a napkin sticking out of the right pocket of that iconic blue nylon bomber jacket that he, Tony, and Mike were all wearing! 🤗❤️🙌🏻✨💫
Great opportunity to watch Phil Collins perform at the Shoreline Amphitheater Redwood City California 1991 and I do believe the album then there were three was one of their best if not their best without Peter Gabriel...🇬🇧🎙️🔊🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶💘

Genesis in the 70's with collins singing was the best. That trick of the tale was outstanding.
Quality, pure quality.
Genesis has NEVER made a bad song, ever in their music making history!! LOVE every single song!!!
Gorgeous masterpiece that I did not know.
And they were three 👍👍👍👍👍
I love Phil 's voice and Tony Banks is a genius. They all make such outstanding melodies. You feel them inside you. Such a gift ❤🙏
YEP, they do !!!

This is what I was trying to say, but didn’t have the words!!!!

He wrote a lot of the best Genesis tracks honestly. They're all good, don't get me wrong, but Tony's tracks? Feckin lush.
Only one word to say to this some Pure genius ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Many, too many have stood where I stand
Many more will stand here too
I think what I find strange is the way you built me up
Then knocked me down again
The part was fun but now it's over
Why can't I just leave the stage?
Maybe that's because you securely locked me up
Then threw away the key
Oh, mama
Please, would you find the key
Oh, pretty mama
Please, won't you let me go free
I thought I was lucky
I thought that I'd got it made
How could I be so blind?
You said goodbye on a corner
That I thought led to the straight
You set me on a firmly laid and simple course
Then removed the road
Oh, mama
Please help me find my way
Oh, pretty mama
Please lead me through the next day
I thought I was lucky
Oh, I thought that I'd got it made
How could I be so blind?
Oh, no
I think "...And Then There Were Three" is one of the most underrated rock albums ever.
Masterpiece. Start to finish.
I'm in complete agreement
I love the album, except for last track.
Agreed!
Not in my world and I almost everyone would agree with me
I love this song, there is something really special about it.

Yes indeed Brother! Know the feeling! 🤗
Such a very sad song

I could listen to that piano intro for hours. The lyrics and melody of this song are outstanding!
Musicisti di livello superiore ...melodia struggente e mai banale..bravi Genesis
Brilliant.
The chords in this song are ridiculous. Tony Banks was crazy for putting a progression like that in a commercial context.
Genesis ❤❤❤
Such a (beautifully) heavy song, and album. Loved the depths of And Then There Were Three, Wind & Wuthering, Trick of the Tail. Genesis may be done, but will always be remembered.
If you were looking for a musical definition of melancholy, look no further. A great song but,oh, the heartache!
True
A great song from a wonderful album -And Then There Were Three, Many hours of pleasure listening to this album.
one of my faves Genesis songs
Keys are acoustic grand piano, and a mix of Mellotron and Polymoog. In fact, this song was the last time a Mellotron was used on a Genesis album.
Wonderful chord structure.
Genesis was so unique . One of the best and most successful bands of all time. Collins...well , a Genius. Might not really even be human. LOL
Although the song is a short one (in 1978 they had to make short songs so they could still be broadcasted on the radio, unfortunately) you can still feel this peculiar "Genesian" poetry which is undefinable with words. Very beautiful
I love mike rutherford's solo on here, subtle yet really haunting!
Yes.
Wish there'd been a little more of it, instead of fading out.
They changed again in a journey no one new? Yes all money and travel ? But the genesis was all mine

Always quiet and very modest genius and backbone of Genesis, Tony Banks.
Mr. Mike Rutherford and Mr. Tony Banks are all over this SONG. Love you guys
You can really see the pop element emerging on these 1978 tracks. Refreshing and memorable.
Dolcissima. Uno dei brani più belli dei Genesis. Fa ascoltare ad occhi chiusi nel buio di una stanza.
I did hear this on the radio-albeit sparingly. Absolute gossamer, surely deserved better as it was issued as a single in '78.
Music is my only love it's never let me down its always been there when I needed it
This song is from the album that elevated Genesis to GENIUS.
