This was recorded in separate locations. They never met each other until the awards show when they received the award for song of the year
True. Apparently Michael recorded it first and sent it to Patti with the lyrics. She took it and sang along with it and turned out a masterpiece.
Mike subsequently sang with her in person on his own special “Michael McDonald and Friends” along with Loggins, Ingram, David Pack and many more.
Patti's pies had me lmao. I know I'm old school and in my personal opinion there will never be music like this again. I feel privileged to have grown up in a time where music was the greatest. I am thankful that we have these treasures to replay over and over again. Great review again you guys 😁

This is an awesome song. They are such a good duo. Another great duo I think y'all would really love is Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams singing "Too much too little too late" from around 78 when I was in high school.

‘Ya Mo B There’ was huge at the time. It’s amazing that it’s ignored nowadays. I’m not strong on a lot of chart music, but Ioved that song.

This is one of my absolute favorite duets of all time. And I just read the story of how they met-! They didn't even meet until the song hit Billboard 100! They filmed on opposite sides of the country. Wow- SO AMAZING! This song is beyond powerful and strong.
Michael McDonald has a great unique voice and Patti can sing the phone book and make it sound perfect

I lost a dear friend who I grew up with this year. It broke my heart. This song brings back good times and the laughter and beauty of those memories. I'm devestated.
One of the best songs written by composer Burt Bacharach with lyricist Carole Bayer Sager. For those not in the know, Bacharach was also responsible for composing classics like I Say A Little Prayer, Walk On By, Close To You, The Look Of Love, Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, Anyone Who Had A Heart, That's What Friends Are For, What The World Needs Now Is Love, Do You Know The Way To San Jose, I'll Never Fall In Love Again, etc, etc. He died earlier this year at the age of 94.
I worked security at a show for Patti LaBelle a couple of months ago...she's still got that voice and high spirit performance. She was very entertaining.

This is a cover Dionne Warwick made this song a year earlier. It came to Patti as a solo song. She decided it should be a duet and she chose Michael McDonald, both artist biggest song of their careers.
She was clever in spotting he would do well: remember at the time they were effectively working in different genres.

The reason Patti and Michael got together was because of their record company. They suggested the idea. In the seventies and eighties duets was massively popular. It was almost a guaranteed hit when two big singers did duets. Other great duets from those two decades include Roberta Flack with Donny Hathaway. James Ingram with Patti Austin. Phil Collins with Amy Grant. Lionel Ritchie with Diana Ross. But my favorite was James Ingram with Tamia and their song How Do You Keep The Love. That song is the best duet song of all time next to the Mariah Carey and Whitney collab.

If my memory is correct, Patti started out recording the song as a solo effort but did not like the results. She told Burt Bacharach she felt something was missing, and they decided to add a male voice. Initially, they wanted James Ingram bur he wasn't able to do it. Enter Michael McDonald and the rest is history. This happened almost forty years ago but that's what I think I remember hearing Patti say in an interview. I happen to love Patti's voice and pies too...........lol. Great commentary...........thanks for sharing!

Hi Asia and BJ. I enjoyed your reaction to this song by Patti and Michael. I would like to recommend checking out a fantastic singing duo Ashford and Simpson if you haven't already.
They began recording their songs as Solo artists and worked for labels like Capitol Motown and Warner Bros and were active between 1964 to 2011.
Nick and Valerie were married in 1974 and unfortunately Nick Ashford passed away in 2011.
Two songs you may want to begin with are 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' (a song they wrote in 1966) and 'You're All I Need to Get By "also written by them and both of these songs they sang so beautifully together. They wrote and sung many other well known songs together too and also wrote many other popular songs for others as well 💕🌺💕.
