RIP John Prine, a true legend. This was John's first appearance on ACL, and it is a wonderful one.
This source is pretty darn excellent, considering the vintage. This is far and away the best copy of this show I've seen. It's really excellent for the vintage.

Ahhh the good olde daze. I started playing live in 78 and was so nervous I'd light a cigarette after every song without remembering I already had at least one still burning. Used to smoke on public transportation too 🙂

John’s music was a gift to the world. He was perhaps the most gifted storyteller i ever heard. He could bring you to tears with laughter with one song and with the next song leave you weeping because he had touched a spot in your heart that you thought was hidden away. Songwriter. Philosopher. Singer and musician. He left us with love, pain ,beauty, joy, and a different prospection of who we were as a people as a nation, and wrapped it all up in three chords.

John Prine's first appearance on Austin City Limits is a must-watch. It was 1978, the show's third season, and Prine was an absolute delight. His set is full of great music and storytelling. The whole episode is worth your time, but even if you have a few minutes, I recommend checking out "Sabu Visits the Twin Cities Alone" and "Illegal Smile." Season 3 of Austin City Limits featured a wide range of country stars from Nashville, including Chet Atkins and Merle Haggard. Fiddler Johnny Gimble also made his first appearance on the show, playing with Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys. The whole episode is worth watching for country music fans. You can't talk about 1978 without mentioning Asleep at the Wheel. They won their first Grammy award for Best Country Instrumental Performance of Count Basie's "One O'Clock Jump". That same year, the rock world suffered a huge loss with the passing of The Who's legendary drummer Keith Moon. But let's not dwell on the negative. If you're into country music or just great music in general, you need to check out the season 3 premiere of Austin City Limits. John Prine delivers a delightful set, including "Sabu Visits the Twin Cities Alone" and "Illegal Smile." I really love that 1978 was such an important year for music, and a lot of great artists had some major milestones. A couple of things that stood out to me were that John Travolta made his film debut in Grease, and that Johnny Cash's daughter Rosanne Cash released her self-titled debut album. I'll have to check those out!

I love the mix of people in this audience. From cowboys to girls, old and young, long hair to short, this seems like a perfect Austin crowd. The way John connected with everyone there is a testament to his genius. Now he did say to me once it was all just three chords, and it is true, but with those three chords came all the images of the everyman you could ask for. He moved you with his words. He warmed you by making you feel, and oh boy- he did make you laugh.

I saw this on first broadcast when it was released. It was the most formative musical experience of my life. What a great storyteller, cynic, comedian, and heart-feeling genius. In three chords.
