The Main Point was something special. I was blessed to have that when I was in high school and coming up. Not only did I see Chris there many time, I saw Bonnie, Dave Van Ronk, Jimmy Jeff Walker, Leo Kottke, Sonny and McGee, Jackson Browne, in a small, intimate, no alcohol venue so I could get in when I was in high school. Nothing like it today, but those of us who were lucky to be will never forget.
Me too. I lived in Malvern until 1976. I also saw many shows at the Main Point. Saw Chris there among others. I saw a young Bruce Springsteen and E Street there before they broke nationally.
Wow, Chris is so overlooked, he's a star in his niche but I feel he should've been better known in his long career...great stories, this guy is a fantastic blues finger stylist and witty folk songwriter. Love this guy.
I was watching Willie's birthday show last night, and saw this happy guitarist in the background. " Hey, that's Otis' friend Tom", I thought. It was like it was a friend of mine up there.
About 15 years ago I was in Jorma Kaukonen’s class at his Fur Peace Ranch guitar camp in Pomeroy, OH and Chris was one of the instructors for the weekend. We would jam every night til midnight and he joined us all three nights. He is such a nice, genuine guy. He also gave all us students a concert and he is just so very talented!!!!! Great memories
So good to see and hear Chris reminisce. I never miss him when he plays within a hundred miles of where I'm calling home.
Chris Smither, John Prine and Guy Clark were my “BIG THREE” that I’ve listened to everything they’ve ever cut and gone to see them every chance I got. Have seen Smither in MA, NY, TN, PA, CA, IL & MN if that lets folks who havent seen him perform know how great his shows are!
Top drawer. You can't get anything close to this anywhere. Thank you Otis for your artistry on stage and off. These interviews are the very best.
❤Otis, this is sweet. Thank you and Chris Smithers for this insight into why Bonnie was steeped in blues knowledge because of Dick Waterman…very dot connecting
With the exception of his very 1st album I have all of Chris's releases. All About The Bones was on pre-delivery so I didn't miss out. As with them all not a bad record, not even a good record but an excellent record and will be played many times. I have had the privilege to see him perform 8 or more times in the UK and never been disappointed. Just a really great writer and performer. It was really interesting to see this conversation with him, so thanks for putting it out there.
I missed seeing him in St. Ives by just a few days a year ago. Wish it had been a month!
I got to hear Bonnie play and sing at a small place in San Francisco once in the 80s with my x husband ( we were still friends). She was so good it was a real treat.
Thanks for introducing us to Chris Smither. I am now a big fan of his a gonna see him in October!
This interview is fantastic... I've listened to Chris' new album several times this week and please let him know it's very good!
I saw him do 'Desolation Row' a few years back in St. Cloud MN..and he really delivered it better than anyone has ever done it..he defined the song..you know it been in his heart for a long time.
I love Chris's songs...he's a really great songwriter and guitarist. Every note means something when I listen to his records. I have 3 of his albums.
So eloquent. I have been a CS fan for a long time, but I now have a much deeper appreciation of the man. Thanks, Otis. You must have him back. His tales of the road are priceless.
Really enjoyed Chris and his experience with music, especially the blues. He’s real. His and your thoughts on songwriting were great. Thanks.
Thank you again! These things should be documented like this.
Fabulous fabulous.
Thanks for this insightful glimpse at this talented and most articulate singer/songwriter. Catch him, if you can. IMHO, he is the real deal.
For sure.
Thank you for this timeless interview! Your talking my language!
⚓️ Thanks Chris 🌈 Otis 😎 … just bought tix for the Freight 🎶😊
Big fan of Chris! Thnx for the beautiful stories Otis.
This must be a collection of the shorter ones? I love hearing the John Prine stories. He was such a nice guy and the songs he wrote were brilliant. Right up to and including the last record! I'm learning a few off that record now. I just don't know where he gets it from, but I wish I got it from there too!! LOL 8) --gary

Thanks for posting that whole interview Otis, it's great! I've been a fan of Chris for many years, never knew so much of his background.
I really enjoyed this interesting and insightful interview. Growing up in Canada, I have to admit that I haven't been exposed to Chris' work. That's going to change tout suite. Really enjoyed this and hope to catch one of Chris' gigs, if the opportunity arises.
So cool to capture this, looking good. A musician's musician.
What a beautiful final phrase at the end!

Listen to Chris’ version of Rock & Roll Doctor.👍👍
Feet down, my favorite.
I would like to hear hear his new album, especially since I heard he did "Time To Get Goin'" by Tom Petty!

A little hijack: Photographs on the cover and inserts of Smither's 1972 album ("Don't It Drag On") offer a pleasant introduction to the work of Duane Michals, a unique blend of photography and literature. The gradual transition in music release formats, resulting in the overwhelming prevalence of downloading and streaming, has taken away a _once_ vital part of listening experience. Image/text files may be attached to digital releases, but it's not the same. Well, that's the way it goes.
Thank you, Mr Smither. Thank you, Mr Gibbs. --Waving from Istanbul.
Littermates. That's so profound.

Well, that was just a jem!
Is Otis throwing curves in regard to the question about women in mixing? Maybe a little.
