His writing is so well done. I'm darn near 70 and Hello in There makes me tear up every single time. I never get tired of listening to him. Truly gifted.
I'm still in mourning for John and his voice is still in my head. I am a lover of social reailism, a poet and publisher of the Blue Collar Review, a journal of progressive Working Class literature. As such, I wrote this poem for John -- and for all of us who love and miss him -- Dear John Bury my heart in Muhlenberg county in a motel in Shreveport in the jungles of East St. Paul A poet who sang the soul of a better Americana jokes and tears in the nitty-gritty realism of life's long hard road Bury that part of our soul this soul that listened and sang along for years and years "that flow by like a broken down dam" Damn your soulprint still so large your voice so widespread your presence remains as if you're still among us and you are. Been listening to JPrine for 40yrs. now. His music NEVER gets old for me. "Hello in There" still brings tears to my eyes! Check out "Jesus, the Missing Years". The reality is, I NEVER heard a JP song I didn't revere as a good composition, tho I DO like summa his stuff more than other
John Prine was the unquestioned master of verse, that's a given. Yet, his wonderful guitar pickin' is not given the credit he deserved. Just listen to Donald and Linda and Hello In There to see what I mean. I've been a big fan for over 40 years and I can't believe he is gone. He will be greatly missed...
I would argue that Dylan was the Master of Verse. As were many others…. I’m not trying to take anything away from JP (RIP Buddy). However good he was, and god knows that he was, The Unquestioned Master I feel is a position held by Dylan. Peace to you all, and Stay Safe during these uncertain times…
My big sister bought this when it came out, 1971. I’m from a family of 13 in upstate NY...this music is family, it helped me make sense of everything . ❤️
I was born in 69 . These are the songs I was raised on. I haven’t heard this album in 30 plus years yet I know every word by heart. After my mom and stepdad passed this year I’m reaching out to any connections that bring them back
He has always been a part of my life since 72. Many memories with each song. I was 9 when my sister bought this album. We still sing his songs today when we get together. I will miss him!
I talked with him outside a bar he was playing at in Bloomington IN back in the 90's and he tried to deny that it was referencing marijuana and try to say it was a smile he would get as a child, and told him, Ok that is why you have the line about the judge, sure. I know it was just because of the drug image he denied it and so did he.
Hello John, even though you never knew me, I feel like I knew you through your music. I have not stopped playing your music since your passing. I have been learning your songs on the guitar and singing. Will keep your memory alive.
I'm 20 and I've just been getting into Prine's music recently. Heard Angel From Montgomery on the radio and was immediately hooked. I've listened to this album at least 3 times today.
So awesome that some of the younger generations are discovering some of the amazing classic albums out there! 😁👍 There's a lot of great albums released in the last 60 or more years. And they're just waiting to be rediscovered 🙏
I remember seeing John Prine in a small venue in Overton Square in Memphis in the 1970s. I'm 67 years old now, and I love his music as much as ever, even more so now that he's gone. You will always live on through your wonderful music. Rest in peace, my friend.😇❤

In the late 70's in Denver I was playing coffeehouses, restaurants, etc. I learned of John through this album, and I learned to play and sing every song on it. Little did I know John was going to change my life! I eventually was doing 3 sets of his songs, and not for pay, for the same joy. If you know John, you know me.
Well rest in peace J.P.. Had the pleasure of seeing John Prine when I was just a young girl, 9 or 10 I believe. His band broke down in my little town, Matapedia Quebec. Now I'm sure no one knows where that was even Mr. Prine at the time, came to our school and performed a few songs. Of course being so young we didn't know who he was, for me was Instant crush. That's how I found out what my whole name meant. He was telling us,by the meaning of my name, he did tell me that I was very special. I believe he was just trying to make a little girl with 1 and a half thick glasses feel good. When I grew up ended up being a huge fan before remembering the young man singing dear Abby when I was so young.
May John be enjoying an illegal smile, a vodka and gingerale, and his nine-mile long cigarette, hanging out there in his club, "The Tree of Forgiveness," jamming with his band, The Sons of Sam Stone! Love you, brother. We'll miss you always.
it seems like a long time since losing him and it was early this month ! theres still a lot happening on his FACEBOOK page ,because his fans need to process such a shocking loss. i sure wish id seen him in concert.
@Warren Uhm... "Vodka and ginger ale" is a line from one of his songs. Most of the original comment is made up of lines from different songs, so what's your point?
John Prine had such powerful influence with his epic song writing that spoke to the souls of the artists who performed them and are more known for the songs. I loved listening to this beautiful album from a true master poet.

When my first 3 kids, twin boys and a girl, were little, they would always ask me to sing "Paradise " ,whenever we were driving any reasonable journey, especially when we were going to my parents home in Northern Ireland. I have loved John Prine's music for many years and I'm just so sad that he's passed away. I still love "Paradise ", and I guess I always will. Gerry Farry.
I'm so glad I got to see him perform at least one time. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in SF few years back. I just found out he passed. We lost a treasure. The world gained much through his songs and quirky humor.

@@palladin331 Absolutely. I think that in his defense, I would rationalize that statement as his being disillusioned with his faith or with that which is supposed to be just. I dunno. Nameste, y'all
His writing is so well done. I'm darn near 70 and Hello in There makes me tear up every single time. I never get tired of listening to him. Truly gifted.
Couldn't agree more. "Heroes" by Guy Clark hits in a similar way for me
I came across this album in the early 70s & have loved his songs ever since... RIP John, you were very special.
45 Years of ear candy Mr Prine. An American treasure that may be gone but never forgotten ❤
I'm still in mourning for John and his voice is still in my head. I am a lover of social reailism, a poet and publisher of the Blue Collar Review, a journal of progressive Working Class literature. As such, I wrote this poem for John -- and for all of us who love and miss him --
Dear John
Bury my heart
in Muhlenberg county in a
motel in Shreveport in the jungles
of East St. Paul
A poet who sang the soul
of a better Americana
jokes and tears in the
nitty-gritty realism
of life's long hard road
Bury that part of our soul
this soul that listened
and sang along for years and years
"that flow by like a broken down dam"
Damn
your soulprint still so large your voice so widespread
your presence remains
as if you're still among us
and you are.

All this on one album . Amazing. R.I.P. John
John Prine got me through so many hard times, thank you John Prine.

I really liked what you said
I'm 28 years young and my Great Uncle Dino put me on John Prine when I was 7 years young.. This is the music I live for ❤ Rest Easy John ❤
A way with words like no other ..Prine songs are often like walking into an ambush...genius.
*Donald and Lydia
Yes sir he is greatly missed. No one will ever fill those shoes. He was one of a kind. Much love to his family and all his fans!
That thumb on the bassline all day long.. that's a beautiful man we speak of
RIP, Mr Prine, on the hills where the angels sing because you are singing with them right now and for eternity!
Just listening to him, he feels like an old friend.
He is your old friend. He's talking to you and me..
My big sister bought this when it came out, 1971. I’m from a family of 13 in upstate NY...this music is family, it helped me make sense of everything . ❤️
Yes. His songs were so big with the Viet Nam vets. Boy those were tumultuous times. America didn't welcome them back very well. A time of sorrow
I'm 65 and still loving John Prine. I'm gonna be creamated (?) but "Please don't bury me" will be sung at my service. Thank you John!!
Me too!!
I was 12 when my Dad got this LP. Stuck with me through the years
...
THE ALBUM IS 1971.
Tonight I will be enjoying an illegal smile for you John rip man
I talked with him outside a bar he was playing at in Bloomington IN back in the 90's and he tried to deny that it was referencing marijuana and try to say it was a smile he would get as a child, and told him, Ok that is why you have the line about the judge, sure. I know it was just because of the drug image he denied it and so did he.
I'm crying. What a lyricist!
Hello John, even though you never knew me, I feel like I knew you through your music. I have not stopped playing your music since your passing. I have been learning your songs on the guitar and singing. Will keep your memory alive.
RIP Monsieur prine on écoute toujours vos jolies chansons avec votre magnifique voix ❤️❤️
How beautiful and incredible a comment.
Merci, mon ami. I totaly agree.
I'm 20 and I've just been getting into Prine's music recently. Heard Angel From Montgomery on the radio and was immediately hooked. I've listened to this album at least 3 times today.
Look up how many other bands have covered angel from Montgomery.
So awesome that some of the younger generations are discovering some of the amazing classic albums out there! 😁👍 There's a lot of great albums released in the last 60 or more years. And they're just waiting to be rediscovered 🙏
@@stevenrolseth4833 many great artists have remade this song so beautifully..
I remember seeing John Prine in a small venue in Overton Square in Memphis in the 1970s. I'm 67 years old now, and I love his music as much as ever, even more so now that he's gone. You will always live on through your wonderful music. Rest in peace, my friend.😇❤

I'm listening to it for the first time as I type this, why haven't I heard of this man before, how awesome, what a true singer/song writer, the record company don't know what we like or want to hear, this man is no cookie cutter bs boy or girl group,he's a treasure, they should really learn who we r this is from the heart,n the heart is where it's at,it's the difference between good music n great music,no bs,stage props, lights just pure from the heart every note lyric n he has died, God this is so wrong I'm 61 n this came out in the 70s,what the f... people what who else is out there, Im we haven't heard I didn't by album's growing up I heard what was on radio, someone really messed up not playing this man's music,I'm a instant fan,n rate him up there with Dylan or any of the greatest he's a true American treasure.❤❤❤❤
First listen 1975ish and yep , still here . ❤ thanks John ❤
When I die I plan to join John Prine 5 miles from wherever I am. In other words, in Paradise!
One of the finest albums ever released.
Absolutely.
What a amazing story teller... I'll always love John Prine.
I always say you either love John Prine or you've never heard of him, r.i.p. handsome Johnny. You are missed but your music lingers on.
So true ... never heard a better way of expressing my love for him and his work.
Perfectly put, Glenda. Maybe you should write a few songs?
We'll miss you always.
yes!! so right!! John Prine, a REAL person, a REALmusician, AND a REAL SONGWRITER.
Vodka and Ginger Ale? Whatever John wants...
it seems like a long time since losing him and it was early this month ! theres still a lot happening on his FACEBOOK page ,because his fans need to process such a shocking loss. i sure wish id seen him in concert.
AMEN
@Warren Uhm... "Vodka and ginger ale" is a line from one of his songs. Most of the original comment is made up of lines from different songs, so what's your point?
This album has got me through some tough times. Here l am again......
Me too!
Thank you for being you John!
Until we meet again my friend,
R.I.P. BROTHER!

Rest in Peace, John. Your big fan from Vietnam
You have been a large part of my life for 35+ years, I'll see you in heaven, my friend...
Someone once called this the only debut album that seems like a “greatest hits” end of career collection.
Sixto Rodrigues done it also
John Prine had such powerful influence with his epic song writing that spoke to the souls of the artists who performed them and are more known for the songs. I loved listening to this beautiful album from a true master poet.
Tom Waits’ debut album is pretty close.
RIP legend you will never be forgotten
Other things are true, but not that one. You and I will all never forget.
You WILL never be forgotten as long as I'm around and I will as I always have, tell others about you. L love you John. You have given me so many Souvenirs.

@@en.copedawg2321 Yeah. I know all about death. Just didn't know he had died. I grew up with his songs. Especially the one about Donald and Lydia. Was that their names? Anyway, thank you for schooling me on death. I learned nothing about it when my brother died or my Dad died, or all of my grandparents. Yep still convinced I'm never going to die. Thank you so much for setting me straight.
I first heard John Prine at the earl, been listening over forty years. The line that grabbed my heart and still catches in my throat when I sing it, from HELLO IN THERE: “We lost Davey in the Korean War; still don’t know what for, don’t matter any more.” Great Godfrey Daniels, it’s more like fifty years! Hello how are you doing today ♥️
Thank you for letting me hear my legend the way I heard it as a teenager in the 70's!

Um… just because you are sensitive does not mean you should be openly weeping in public. I’m sensitive as well. A little self control if you please.

I don't think I could listen in public! Too many tears.
Je suis heureux de voir quelques commentaires en français car je regrette tellement que ce Grand Monsieur, cette Légende, semble aussi peu connu en France. En tout cas très, très grand merci John !!!
Mr. Prine.Still my hero.

I reckon God has Already Smiled a Few times Because of John Prine .
I am so fortunate that I discovered John Prine when I did, his music brought me peace and focus to create my own music i am forever grateful 😊
It's so sad that John has left us but he sure has left us a legacy of great song & music & with this lock in I have spent last while since John got I'll - backing up his music & I enjoyed it again even though sad, as a Christian I believe John has just moved on to the next Phase in the home of the Nazarene & I think Jesus wanted John for Super band he is setting up and what pick he has from Ap - Sara and Maybelle Carter - Hank Williams down to George Jones & Johnny Cash etc etc etc & now John Prine & what a sound I can hear in Heaven ******
God this album is a great record. Thanks John. Thank you RHINO for making this available for unlimited listening
Beautiful words with meaning and melody - good old country. Am a new fan - glad the music lives on
I'm new to the genius of John Prine having only discovered him sadly after his passing. But in a way knowing now what a beautiful man he was hearing talk on stage and in interviews im kind of glad because had i been a fan for years i think i would be absolutely heartbroken.
The ultimate story will be missed. Glad he left so much to remember him by.
Thank you RHINO for putting this out for all to enjoy. JP will be missed, and his legacy will live on through his wonderful lyrics. What a songwriter!!
Can you put more of his albums up for us to remember what a great writer and singer John was. I miss you 😊🎉
I have loved John Prine since I was in my teens. My dad brought this album home where he is sitting on the hay.

Hello in there is one of the greatest songs ever
A lot of my friends laff at me when I've sayin g this for 50 yrs..
I am a confessed insoniac..but when I listen John Prine..who cares..enjoy the music from another midwestern!!
Listening to John Prine rite now. My favorite musician...Hello In There...my favorite ❤older I get...more I love & understand every word.
I'm so glad I got to see him perform at least one time. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in SF few years back. I just found out he passed. We lost a treasure. The world gained much through his songs and quirky humor.
This is like fine wine gets better with age,Thanks Johnny for helping me make sense of it all.
I have loved John since the first day I found him years ago. I will always love you John. From Betty from AZ.
To the Honorable John Prine and crew. Thank you!
I was introduced to the music of John Price when I was in my forties and how I so enjoyed his music. His songs always tell a story and if you listen closely they are stories of real life. You can't hear any new country/folk music like this anymore. RIP John Prine your fans still love your music.
Yes you can… maybe not this good but the style is being played for sure.
@@wickedlee664 Really? I listen to new stuff regularly - no one has ever reached out and grabbed my mind the way John did.
Everyone is sharing their age so I guess I will. I'm 32 and I grew up hating my father and he loved country music, so i hated it too. This man is one of the people that changed my mind. Spoke to me like actual country is supposed to, and his poetiscim and subtle humor are unprecedented. Thank you for changing my mind.
I'm 54 and also grew up hating & fearing my father. He's now one of my best friends - sometimes life is short.
Always loved his music since the 1970's. I got to see him live at a Bluegrass festival in Va in 1976. he put up a good show as a solo act. 50 year admirer and listener to John Prine. I had the extraordinary pleasure of meeting him once, true man of the people. In "Illegal smile", "the judge's name was Hoffman". Hoffman was the name of the presiding judge in the Chicago Seven trial, LOL. John Prine is deeply missed.
