I saw him perform years and years ago at Red Rocks Park near Denver. What a night... RIP.
He'll never be forgotten, so sad he had so much physical disabilities, n for so long, his determination to keep working n producing, despite that was beyond superlatives......!!!
True Canadian Troubadour!
May he be painting pictures with his lyrics as his Soul continues along his musical journey!

I'm 62. For 50 years, Gordon Lightfoot has been my favorite songwriter and story teller. He left us a library that will always enrich us.
61 but same for me too.
Me too! Turning 62 in about 45 minutes!
62 in 1 week here
77 here and couldn't agree more...RIP troubadour
Thanks yes....me too.......I love him since the 70th...when I was 12/13 until today...I listen to his music every day....
I have to be careful where and when I listen to Gordon Lightfoot! Anyone of his songs can burst me into spontaneous tears! Rarely tears of sadness .... rather tears of deep Beauty.... Beauty too deep to hold without crying .... Thank-you Gordon. Your life is what it looks like to live a spiritual/creative life.....doing what you were born to do. You are an inspiration..... I see that it is not an easy path to live but, one that can bring such Beauty into the world.

His music is beautiful.
What a beautiful comment Susan, you covered all of my own thoughts and emotions in that one!
No one can tell a story like Gordon, every song brings forth a snapshot in my life fully loaded with emotions.
I have to be very careful where and when to Susan, 65 now and getting soft and introspective.
Kind Regards
Darryl
Took the words right out of my mouth...you just about brought ME to tears with your heartfelt truth...BEAUTIFUL
RIP Gordon Lightfoot (November 17, 1938 - May 1, 2023), aged 84
You will be remembered as a legend.
Gordon Lightfoot is a national treasure 🇨🇦
An International treasure!!!
he was inspirational
folk singer rip gordo
Now he's a monument
Canada for sure, America has no equal in his genre....
Found myself with no choice but to keep listening this morning. The sounds of my childhood...
Amazing. Me too.
I emigrated to Canada in 1967 had a guitar strapped to my back but couldn't play it. Found one of Gordon's song books in a store with all the chords shown. Sat down and learned to play every song in that book. Spent many an evening sitting on the front porch singing and drinking with my fellow house guests. Still playing to this day and it's all thanks to Gordon's song book. I owe you Gordon and so does everyone who has enjoyed my playing over the years. Rest in peace, be seeing you soon.
It's been a year since he died, and his voice is still more alive than so many of those still breathing. Life of great artists truly transcends mere heartbeat.
Such heartbreaking news. Rest in peace kind Sir. Your music and legacy will live on forever. A deep thinker, a poet, a masterful storyteller, a phenomenal singer that touched your soul, and a warm beacon of shining light in a rough world. Thank you. 🥀🕊💔😢🙏
He was one of those people you think will always be around. Farewell to an incredibly talented yet humble man ❤
I saw him last year. He was amazing! I am soooo glad I got to see him!
With any luck...he will always be around.
His songs take me back when life was less stressful and I felt my values were shared by most other people.
100%
take me back to any time before the year 2000 and i will be very happy
I agree
jealous, i was born well well after those times. it sucks now!
I agree - I feel as if I no longer belong to the current social values (or lack there of). Getting lost in the music of my youth is a happy place to visit.
Rest in peace, Gordon. Thank you for so many memories.
The 70's was the era for the singer-songwriters. Kudos to Gordon and the all poetic company of that era. Oh how it's desperately missed.
Ditto ... like Jim Croce.
The 70’s was the Best era ever for All kinds of music! Love Gordon Lightfoot!! 🥰🥰
Never a truer word said
Thank you!!!!!
Although the late 60’a has my heart, as well.
Canada should be proud one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
I fell in love with Gordon Lightfoot when I was a teenager. His brilliantly crafted songs moved me. One of the first songs I learned to play on guitar was "Pussywillows, Cat Tails". I was and always will be a huge fan of his. RIP Gordon. Thank you for the music.
We buried my Dad yesterday. I grew up listening to Gordon Lightfoot as my Dad had his original records. These songs teleport me back to my youth sitting with my Dad in the mountains of Colorado watching a fire, playing cards, or being present as the snow fell. Miss him, but these songs will always remind me of him.
Sorry 🙏🏽❤️. And I’m here cause Gordon died today
I am also sorry for your loss, sounds like you are blessed to have those beautiful precious memories. I to am here cause Gordon died today 😢
@@overworked1084 Me too.

You wrote some beautiful songs. You made the world a better place. Rest in peace Brother
I was 16 in 1970, I first heard his hauntingly beautiful voice singing, " If You Could Read My Mind" I was never the same.
I fell in love.💕
I also was 16 in 1970 & IYCRMM has been a favorite since then, too!
I was 12, from upstate NY 5 miles across saint Lawrence river.
Gordon was like a neighbor
RIP Gordon Lightfoot, my thoughts & prayers to the family and friends.
When I met him 25-30 years ago we sat and spoke after the show and our time was very special he held my hand for most of the convo ~ Beautiful soul ❤
Rest in peace, Gordon, and thank you for all the beautiful songs...
As a teenager in the 70s, listening to Lightfoot on my transistor radio, I was privy to some of the best music ever written. I consider myself a lucky bastard in this respect.
"You can't Jump a Jet Plane like you can a Freight Train!" LOVE that line! Rest in Peace Gordon Lightfoot
Many years ago when I was just a little boy and barely up off the floor Gords truck, I think it was, broke down in front our farm on the hwy 11 late at night. Gordon came in to use the phone but being so late he ended up staying for several hrs playing music with my mom and dad. My dad played the fiddle and my mom sang, they had a band so many years ago that played in a few local spots in the area.. I sat and listened to Gordon all night and has been one of my all time favorites ever since.
Rest in peace Gordon.
What an amazing memory. I picked up a hitchiker in Gallup,New Mexico in 1978. I only gave him a ride because he was carrying a backpack & guitar. He played & sang many songs, my favorite being 'City of New Orleans'. That is also a wonderful memory! 😊
Nice memory! Wow.
Thanks for sharing
Your story touched my heart! Thank you for sharing.
How very very blessed you are to have experienced that!! OH, my.
RIP Gordon...your voice, your songs, your storytelling will carry on forever. Listening to your music in honor of a great folk singer. We took our children to the Edmund Fitzgerald museum and prior to it on our way played the song in our car.... They now have that as a memory, too. God bless you!!!
When I was a long distance driver I played his greatest hits over and over. Master craftsman, heart on the sleeve, R.I.P. Gordon, have a good rest 👋
I still do on long road trips. Just sounds right.
Six strings down on a heaven bound flight.
Thank for all of your music.
R I P Gordon
You don't know what you had until it's gone. RIP Gordon Lightfoot. Small town prairie boyhood soundtrack from the 70s. 😔
The wreck of the edmund fitzgerald, what a massive masterpiece. Rest in peace cordo and thanks for the music.
Have always loved his music, and was loved by my late husband, who passed 32 years ago, and the memories are so strong when I hear these beautiful songs xxx Thanks for a lifetime of memories
R.I.P. To a GREAT VOICE OF THINKING PEOPLE!
"If you could read my mind" has been a wonderful song for appreciating life...the older we get the more meaningful. God Bless Gordon and thank you for your beautiful music.❤❤
RIP Gordon Lightfoot. When I miss home, Canada, I listen to you. Thank you for all you have let us remember x
Listening to his songs today, lots of memories and images with friends and family over the decades. Growing up in Ontario in the '70s, '80s, '90s... his music was literally everywhere, like maple leaves and the Canadian Shield. So many images coming up, like a photo album from my life, and I'm sure many, many others.
Indeed. As ubiquitous as maple leaves.
Every song written by Gordon is a master piece..He's the greatest story teller of all times....every songs is a story. Thanks Gordon..I've followed you since the 60's,.and still am...God Bless Gordon in retirement .your music lives on...thank you for all your music .
RIP Gordon.🙏 You will be missed. Many of us still dance to your songs and many more will continue to dance to them for decades to come.
RIP you were the best! You will be missed. Your music will live on
Rest in peace my friend! Your songs brought stories and solace in my troubling times. Thank you for the soundtrack of our lives.
I just heard of Gord’s passing 💔🇨🇦 words cannot express my feelings for this great Canadian icon who inspired me to be a musician and love folk music…each song brings me back to a simple time when love was new and there’s always a story to tell…he was the master storyteller ❤RIP Mr Lightfoot
A wonderful sentiment to Gordon
Well said❤️
An icon is an abstract symbol; G. L. , fortunately, was a real man-an artist, moreover, who struggled with the vagaries of living a creative life in a commercial, pop-music world and came out well ahead in the end. Highly talented, skilled, persevering, and truly individual, he is an inspiring example of musicality and humanity that will continue to ring out for the future.
@@Valvicus Icon in the music industry is someone who’s bigger than life and has given his heart and soul to his fans through his music… I only saw one of his many concerts in my lifetime and a more humble man on stage I’ve yet to see… he continually thanked the audience for coming out to listen to his many beautiful songs and I sat in amazement as he weaved a tapestry of his music that left us all with a better sense of how gifted Gordon was…he’s gone but not forgotten and yes he was a true “ Icon “ in every sense of the word no matter how you want to cut it…his lyrics were deep and well thought out but always simple enough for the common man to relate to…nothing complicated about Gordon Lightfoot…somewhat similar to another great Canadian singer songwriter gone before his time Gene MacLellan who wrote Snowbird that launched Ann Murray’s career …both had a rare talent for capturing their audience with song
Loved him and his music! I will always be thankful for his music! 😮 Heaven gained !
I miss this terribly, here's to Lightfoot 👍👍🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🥃
RIP Gordon. You brought so much joy & peace to an enamoured generation. They broke the mould after you were born.
Gordie will be 83 tomorrow ... Beautiful. Also my favorite Lightfoot song.
He was 13 years old when was a new born. I was first introduced to his music when I arrived in Toronto in 1974. His songs are still so alive in my heart of youthful years.
One of Canada’s most treasured.
RIP Gordon. Thank you for all you beautiful words and music. You truly have made my life richer.
Drinking a toast to the great Gordon with so many others today! Thanks for all the memories!
One of the best singer/songwriters of my generation. RIP Gordon.
My girlfriend gave me my first Gordon Lightfoot album "If You Could Read My Mind" in 1971. As a guitarist and musician, I have loved his music ever since. Finally got to see him live nearly 30 years later in 2000. One of the world's best songsmiths.
That's my favorite one.
RIP Mr Lightfoot. So many memories. So many wonderful times.
A Beautiful Canadian Soul, just listening now and I'm overwhelmed with Pride of my home Country 🇨🇦 May Mr. Lightfoot Rest in Peace.
Life would be so much poorer without Lightfoot songs……..thanks for this
Listening this morning and remembering how I was more likely to be hearing Gord on an 8 track player in the truck than headphones. Hearing so much more and feeling humbled. We have lost a great one. 😢
Early Morning Rain; what a supreme classic.
Love this compilation of Gord's song. We lost a true Canadian icon today May 2 2023. Genius writer and guitarist and singer. Rest in peace Gordon Lightfoot. xxoo
I’m back in college… and this morning my husband and I danced as we were transported back.. thank you for the music Gordon ❤
Can anyone not love Gordon Lightfoot songs? He is a legacy.
So much better than anyone today !
Wonderful songs
@@conniecooley5542 Yes they are .He had a great voice not like Rappers today who just talk fast or scream into the Mic
His songs will always make me melancholy. And that’s what I need sometimes. I like being brought back to the days when life was simpler.

RIP Gordon. You were one of Canada' best songwriter.
Came here today to listen to him, he just had his 84th birthday! Such a treasure, if only time stood still.
Gordon and his guitar are probably one of the best unions between man and instrument! Beautiful, I say!
Rip Gordon Lightfoot, my love for your music will never leave me, we share same first name, it’s a honor
Rest in Peace, Gordon Lightfoot. Godspeed and good journey. You were one of the true greats.
I cannot play guitar but I do know my heartstrings thank you mr. Lightfoot for playing my heartstrings. His voice lyrics and guitar work are as on6. So soothing and melancholy
Thank you for a lifetime of great music. Rest in peace.
Saw him three times in concert, absolutely one of the most wonderful folk musician, will always love his mysic and voice. A poet, a troubador a beautiful human being. RIP🙏💔
Had the great pleasure to be in the audience, mid 80's, when he played Massey Hall. I'll never forget when he asked audience members to request songs.
A young boy approached , a piece of paper in his hand asking him to do Pony Man. And, he did. Magical for me. Little did I know, the lady I was holding hands then with would inspire our very own version of "If You Read My Mind" some time later.
Like Gordon also said " Bitter sweet".
I'll miss him.
RIP Gordon. May you live forever on the Carefree highway.
Have never felt such a deep sense of loss. I care little for most celebrities or news of them. Have been in tears all damn day. Will miss you terribly and God bless
You lived a long and happy life, Lightfoot!!! Your legacy will expand far and wide with many inspired by your work!!!!!!!!!!
I have never listened to a Gordon Lightfoot album. I always liked his stuff but I never knew his music is THIS GOOD. Dead or alive his music IS so long as we listen.
He's alive.❤
Growing up in the 70s, Gordon Lightfoot's music was somehow always playing in the background. RIP Gordon.
Anybody else crying? R.I.P. Mr. Lightfoot.
A hell of a songwriter. So care-free, so freeee! May you keep "picking and kicking" (as you said) up in Spirit in the sky in the early morning rain!
Thank you for your beautiful music , Gordon. Your music will never die. RIP. to a great Canadian musician.
Rest well, Gord. You left us with music for a lifetime. From an Orillia Fan....
Thank You for decades of beautiful music. Rest in Peace🕊🌿
Rip Gordon. Your music is part of my childhood and inspiration for music 🎶. Much Love
RIP Gordon, you brought the world much joy.
I am an R&B and jazz guy, but that song, Beautiful always stuck with me over the years. When I heard about his passing I have played it over and over
As a songwriter I find it amazing that Gordon can get away with being so honest about his experience as a young man in the 1960s and 1970s. I think most writers are inclined to write safe, happy stories, but Gord is so honest. Really he is often just painting pictures of the human experience, even very sad ones, just to get them out.
Gord is fully aware of his brutal honesty in his songs, that why they often have this peculiar mix of self-loathing and faith in his own instincts.
Example, in "For lovin' me," we hear lyrics about him asserting "All you'll get for loving me is losing everything you had." He even seems to note cruelly, "There you go crying again-" but at the end of that phrase he has this optimistic and self-understanding line, "but then one day when your poor heart is on the mend, I just might pass this way again." As in, you can only Love me at a distance, not fully because i'm afraid to be vulnerable enough to Love that deeply. I'm not sure if he's conscious or not of that emotional malady... Sounds like this song was his way of grasping it, objectifying it so he could see it. Any young man gets where that song is at.
It so strangely healing to hear someone going through what you are, and subtly pointing at the way out, but also that he himself struggles to go there, to love that deeply, because he has "1000 more women to ge tthrough..." which he seems to be using to defend himself against the cathartic realization he can't admit.
Such a strange self-awareness from the position of one struggling. Many of his songs have this raw honesty, its like listening to a larvae struggle to come out of a coccoon, and documenting each and every painful stab very intimately and relatably.
Kristopherson is another such.
@@tyzardoz totally!
Whoops it wasn't peter Paul and Mary...Gordon did write it in 1963...you are correct
So deeply insightful, and beautifully written. Thank you.
He later said that he didn't like it. It wasn't a kind song. @@davidopine1257
Gordon may never have won a Grammy, but he won all our hearts.
What a legend. RIP Gordon Lightfoot. Thank you for sharing your beautiful talent with the world.
He paints music on the canvases of our ears. because he has an amazing distinctive voice and writes poetic somgs.
All canadians should be proud to have a national treasure like gordon lightfoot. His songs sing of canada are so easy to connect to. He is our counties Bob Dylan. Thank gordon for your gift .
Canada has many gifted musicians
Very definitely true. I wish I had seen him live. Too old now..me I mean.
He is much better than Dylan. Dylan is tone deaf.
I totally agree. Solely Canada's treasure and always my favorite folk artist.
Great artist but Canada truly golden artist is Rush. Best rock band of all-time!
He is my favorite folk singer. I totally love his eternal voice. My favorite song: “If You Could Read My Mind.” I will always celebrate his Life, Music and Infinite Beauty he shared via his Songs~
By far, my most favorite concert I have ever been to was simply Gordon Lightfoot sitting on a stool with his guitar at Red Rocks amphitheater, Colorado. Beautiful sounds, beautiful night.
Yes, the simple acoustic sounds of Gordon with Red Shea in the very early 1970s was a fabulous concert. What I like are the clear, sing-a-long lyrics together with the melody..
"I can see her lyin back, in a satin dress, in a room where you do what you don't confess." WHAT an OPENING LINE!
Gordo, you ARE a LIVING LEGEND, a celestial gift to we undeserving lessers.
God Bless, sir.
“If you could read my mind” is probably my most profound memory song but I enjoyed all of his songs, very inspirational 😊He was an inspirational musician🪴…I have his entire collection…
Perfectly written...perfectly performed. Mike drop.
His voice echos to a period in my youth when times were less confusing, his music can encapsulate me, if we could only return to those times if not for 1 more day.
His voice brings back memories of growing up in the 1960s
When the only thing you had to look forward to was Casey kasem and what song was at number one

Sparks the wild, wandering, wide-eyed girl still dancing in my soul. Thank you Gordan!
Hi! I'm honored by your reply and humbleness, but I have to disagree just a bit that you are not nothing without fans. You are part of the fabric of generations. A gift to the world. A talent that inspires great feelings in others. You are a legend! We are lucky you chose to share that talent with us. Love to you and yours as well.
@Gordon Lightfoot honored. Thank you.
Linda was this for real or someone pretending to be Mr. Lightfoot? If it was the real Mr. Lightfoot, that is amazing!
🙏 Praying and sending ❤ to his family, friends and all of us fans who love him and his music!
Gordon Lightfoot was, arguably, the finest singer/songwriter to ever grace a stage. For some of you, that might be a bold statement but I have rich musical evidence to work with. His musical legacy is found in his sweet melodic love songs, his plaintive ballads and towering anthems, Lightfoot was recognized by his peers as a force of elegant melody and word. He was a rogue storyteller in the cloak of a modern day minstrel. Few, if any, had his range which could go from the intimacy of a song like 'Beautiful' to his great anthem to the mariner 'Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' or find the scope that he demonstrated with the misty 'Bitter Green' versus the universal and powerfully relevant 'Black Day in July'. There's the story of a broken man's plaintive plea for home all ex-pats feel in 'Early Morning Rain'. And in the epic tale 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy' he crystalized the Canadian Dream. Most significantly and crucial, he taught us the way to sing about our nation something that was sorely lacking in the character of a citizenry intimidated by its southern neighbours. And that was his greatest gift to all born in this vast wild country we call Canada. That alone would have been enough for one man.
May you Rest In Peace Gordon, forever playing a six string.
I can only stack him up against guys like Micheal Jackson (a pure talent) and very very short select list of others.. but there are some things as you have stated here about Gord that are literally untouchables. Unlikely to experience this kind of talent again in my lifetime at 47 yrs old.
Indeed. Gord's gold will shine on.
,👍✌️✌️✌️✌️🤟🤟🤟🤟
I'm from the southern USA. A town near Nashville TN but my two favorite singer song/writers are Canadian, Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot. My favorite singer/drummer played in a Canadian band, Levon Helm from AR.
❤
Yes, he truly was. Despite our differences, many of us here in the States have appreciated and admired our fine neighbours to our north for a very long time, and have always embraced and respected your autonomy as the sovereign and independent nation that you are. I have visited your incredibly beautiful country many times and have always returned home feeling blessed to have been there and dreaming of my next visit.
Gordon didn't just produce an album entitled "Gord's Gold". He indeed was the gold, and always will be - a national treasure of yours, if I may say so.
May his music, memory and incalculable influence on Canadian culture live on forever.
Thank you for articulating Gordon's legacy to Canada so beautifully and honorably.
This guy is still around. How is it possible that he is underappreciated? Lightfoot is the REAL thing.
Have you seen the John Prine - House of Strombo video with Gordon Lightfoot in the audience. Great to see two legends giving big respect to each other.
@@johnwhitteron5296 Thanks for passing that one on. We are an entire generation who grew up listening to this beloved soul. Personally, Gordon's voice, also those of Charlie Rich & James Taylor were my "radio dads." We are, afterall, their "radiohead children." God Bless Them 🎸 🎤
He's huge in Canada but less in the U.S. because he's Canadian. It was a really big deal back in the day. Still is for some great Canadian bands that should be mainstream in the U.S. I'm in Detroit and get lots of great radio out of Windsor, Ontario, Canada! He's only playing in Canada every now and then and can barely sing but you're right he IS still showing up! Awesomeness!!!
I've been listening to him my whole life! Love that man👍👏👏👏👏❤️❤️
I'm listening to him now!👍💕💕

My father was in the Coast Guard and was often out on his ship for weeks at a time. When he came home, me and my brothers would look forward to lazy Saturdays and Sundays hanging out with Dad and listening to music he had on this amazing reel-to-reel tape player he had. The Eagles, Three Dog Night, Karen Carpenter, so many great artists. When Gordon Lightfoots song came on, it was The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I remember my father would sit there and listen to that song with such sadness. It made such an impression on me. Its one of the most beautiful and haunting songs I have ever heard.
Wow your story makes that so real! From Michigan, still here at 74, I know Gitchee Goomey though I am on Lk Michigan...great memories!!
When I read your words, a tear came to my eye. I too miss my Dad
Great memories Suzanne, you had and have a great dad, Peace and Respect...
I can absolutely relate with you Suzanne, even now in 2021, I am listening to all of this Classic Music of the 70's that I recorded on to my Huge Reel to Reels....I have the last 4 of the top models made, 2 of them are the Auto-Reverse.....Akai and TEAC.....nothing like the sound of Open Reel Tapes from Top Machines!!
You had a good father and great memories cherish them both
I feel a heaviness and have all day. Gordon's music was the kind that could actually change your life.
Such a talent. Thank you Gordon. Rest peacefully.❤
"If you could read my mind" is my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. RIP, Mr. Lightfoot.
