My biggest issue with first aid beauty is how they keep reformulating their products but they formulate then worse...like adding in fragrance ingredients but still claim fragrance free and sensitive friendly. For their ultra repair serum, the reduced the amount of some beneficial ingredients and then got rid of some all together; ie. it doesn't contain peptides anymore! So why should I pay the same price for lacking reformulations? No thank you!
Yup, I just commented on the same topic. They were so shady about the way they went about it too, because they know the watered down crap they are putting out now isn't worth their prices, they know they did their customers wrong!!
@@x.Kristen.x I know people have their problems with drunk elephant, but the Lala retro is honestly my favorite moisturizer!! My skin is super dry and sensitive and it helps me so much. Another (more affordable alternative) is the La Roche Toleriane line!!!
I was about to get that super thick oatmeal cream until I saw that they had EUCALYPTUS OIL as an ingredient. How tf is that sensitive skin friendly???? That is literally the worst for sensitive skin. Gonna have you burning and stinging.
OMG!! So glad you talked about the biosance brand trip. That really pissed me off. I totally agree with all the reasons you gave. They said the purpose of the trip was to launch their 'new' plant derived squalane? And also to plant coral to help save the reefs...whilst flying the majority of infliencers from halfway around the word....ironic much? Do they know how long it takes for coral to grow? And also if existing coral is dying due to increased ocean temps and pollution what makes them think that the newly planted coral will thrive in these conditions? You are the only person I have seen speak out about this and makes me ❤️ you more!
I heard about it after @theecowell sunscreen econference, during the last panel it was mentioned. There was also a whole presentation about the sunscreen/coral reef stuff that laid out allll the data.
Yea. Biossance is overrated af. I know so many ppl who raved about it but honestly they're overpriced and while "clean" beauty is hard to avoid these days with their marketing, Biossance really ramped up therr and was so defensive when TO released their Everything is a Chemical campaign. Turned me off completely from them.
Because its main targets are women, the group that uses beauty products the most. Avon and The Body Shop's share the same parent company nowadays (Natura).
I’m going to get alot of hate for this but another brand for me is Paula’s Choice i feel she strayed too far from her origins, too expensive and too muddled with so many of the same products just with different labels.
@@JamesWelsh She did! They went more commercial after that. Only used their aha/bha bc. its great! But there is now finally a good affordable dupe in my country
“a mouse got cancer once after it drank a bucket of parabens” lmao 😂 The reasoning behind every cautionary, alarmist conclusion from a shoddily constructed scientific paper
same thing with aluminium in deodorants! they injected huge amounts of aluminium compounds into the veins of mice and they developed alzheimer's-like brain degeneration. so now we have 50 "natural" deodorant brands
For me, you could have included Drunk Elephant. I bought SO MUCH FROM THEM and they did nothing for my skin. I bought every product, made the skincare "cocktail" like many suggested. Nothing. A big waste of money. The Marula Oil is nice but not a game changer.
drunk elephant is luxury so i just went eh. most luxury skincare is just nice but u obviously dont need them & can get similar stuff for way cheaper. its just less aesthetic packaging ig.
I tried the Babyfacial and compared it to the comparable Ordinary Peel and tell me why a $8 product outperforms an $80 one. And Marula oil, you can get similar quality from The Ordinary or even Trader Joe's!
I still love I'm From (especially their earlier products) but I feel like the brand feels pressured to constantly offer new products that they simply aren't ready to release. I hope they don't get swept far into the fast skincare mentality that they seem to be falling into. I'd rather see them as a small brand with a few great products than a large brand with mostly mediocre items
Smaller indie brands like Krave, Stratia, MaeLove, etc are so much better about releasing fewer, consistently high-quality products. As soon as a brand is purchased by investors the ONLY motive is profit and they start cranking out a slew of "decent" products. I'm not on the I-Hate-Capitalism Train, but crap like this makes me fully understand why capitalism gets so much criticism these days.
@@JamesWelsh it's almost as if they get you hooked with a really good product, make lots of money, a bigger company buys them out, the head of companies steps down, and then all those wonderful ingredients just dwindling it smaller and smaller. Or they break it up into other items, claiming you need to get this and have that and this and that. It's ridiculous. Once what was good is now frivolous and made for the trash.
I see celebs pouring thousands into their looks, but if you zoom in on a candid you can still see blemishes and texture and "imperfections" etc. If they can't get perfect skin, I sure as hell can't. Plus in this economy with these rent hikes? Girl no. I have a standby cleanser and moisturizer I can use any time, an oil cleaner for waterproof makeup that doesn't require cotton rounds or wipes, and a toner. I have cheap little serums that I like but I'm not going to freak out if I don't have them. I have a script for tretinoin. I am just gonna try my best with that and use spf. I can't justify buying a lot of skincare or makeup or extra gadgets and things right now, but the especially optional stuff like a new serum or whatever is too trivial rn. It doesn't matter if it literally gives me the face of a baby again, if it's more than like 14 bucks I'm not going for it. The rush to always have new products and "collections" and trying new things is so wasteful and the all this excess has to go somewhere, the landfills and the ocean and now in our bloodstream. Micro plastics are found in Antarctica now too. It's really too much. I would rather have some texture and laugh lines and not have plastic in my blood, you feel me?
The Body Shop has an MLM branch in the US and that automatically makes it unethical enough for me to never support; they could be the best ingredients and the greenest brand, but scamming people into a pyramid scheme is a big NO from me.
I used to LOVE Kiehl's. It was the first skincare brand I tried, based on a friend's recommendation. I tried 1 or 2 products and really saw a difference in my skin and continued to use them religiously for the next 4 years. A different friend of mine introduced me to a few K beauty brands during the pandemic and I was shocked to find products that were significantly better for WAY less money. And it turned out some of the products their staff recommended for my sensitive, dry, rosacea prone skin were making all of that worse! So happy I found you in 2020 and started purchasing your recommendations.
My skin all of a sudden started reacting to everything that I had already been using. Products with actives and without. My skin got so red, burned, swelled up and ended up peeling. I went on a hunt looking for clean, no fragrance, made for sensitive skin products. I finally found the Aveeno Calm and Restore Cream. I warily bought the mini, and had no negative reaction, it really did sooth and reduce the redness overnight. Although, I do have to say, I do not have Rosacea (a chronic condition) mine was for lack of better terminology, allergic reactions. So, I ran out and bought the full size , the serum and the pumpkin mask. Haven't tried the serum or mask yet. So I don't want to recommend those yet. But I also used some snail mucin gel and sheet masks prior to the cream to facilitate the healing. My skin has 95% recovered. I do like Kiehls, but only the Avocado eye cream and the new Overnight Squalene Mask. I was not impressed with the day Facial cream. I tested the Biossance Omega cream and couldn't stand the smell, so that was a no for me. I do like the Biossance Squalene Oil, but I prefer the Drunk Elephant Marula Oil better. Too bad, because the Biossance Oil is a better value. But gonna continue to bite the bullet and repurchase the Drunk Elephant. In saying that my skin type: Mature, extremely dry, dehydrated, extremely sensitive reactive skin.
OMG I had the same!! Went to my local Kiehl's and got a whole bunch of products. However, I was so unhappy with my skin and the result, that I switched them up after like one year. Now looking at "old" photos of me you can really see that it just didn't work on me. My face looked like a freaking tomato all the time :D Not anymore!
@@dixiesmom4633 I recently bought the Snail Mucin Essence from COSrx that James recommended. Got 30% off too! And I absolutely love my Great Barrier Relief from Krave Beauty! Both of those have definitely calmed things down for me!
@@ajsitrick I got the same thing. The Snail mucin gel in the bottle and the jar. But I still top it off with the Aveeno Calm and Restore Cream to hold in the moisture. It's good for every skin type. And even though it offers moisture, its not enough for me. I only use the Aveeno Calm and Restore to calm and heal my reactive skin. It really does work. But then I go back to the Kiehls Overnight mask for intense moisture. It doesn't irritate my skin but it's VERY rich, probably not good for oily skin. But I did try the Aveeno Serum and Soothing Pumpkin mask. No reaction. I'll probably save the serum as a irritation treatment but I think I'm going to continue to use the mask weekly.
Biossance is severely overrated imo. Ive seen ppl raved them but i was not impressed by a few products ive tried, especially for the price point. Their clean beauty marketing pissed me off as a biochemist. The way they respond to Deciems Everything is a chemical campaign really threw me off. Its hard to avoid clean beauty marketing and i use and love brands with the "clean" beauty label but thanks to the price point, it is easy for me to avoid and not support them. The whole Fiji trip really reinforce my stance for Biossance.
So fun fact, Lush (FKA Cosmetics To Go) did formulation for The Body Shop for a few products initially. The relationship sullied from my understanding, but The Body Shop kept a few formulas and the tea tree line is apparently very close to formulas Lush founders helped create. However, Lush is also a fairly shady brand (having worked for them) and are very ethically dubious beyond their perceived good will.
Yup, when I worked there we had conferences where we were told the same story, which honestly just felt like throwing body shop under the bus without actually saying it 😉
Lush is one of them brands I used to love. It’s very targeted to young kids and teens with the colourful bath bombs but whenever I go in there I’m disappointed and they keep putting there prices up and up! I swear there prices are increasing by a couple of pound each year. I used to love there mask of magniminty and it was 6.95 for the small tub which lasted me ages. Last time I was in there it was 9.95 now I think online it’s saying it’s over 10 pound. Bath Bombs are about 8 pound now for a fizzing ball you use once. Also the staff used to be lovely and come up to you and show you products and things, now you walk in there and you are ignored completely. The music is far too loud and there’s hardly anyone in.
The only thing I use from the Body Shop is the tea tree oil as well, which I still like for my acne...but I never saw The Body Shop as a skincare brand...they are like a Bath and Body Works store for "body" lotion, body wash, etc.
I used to love First Aid Beauty but they’ve been reformulating their stuff constantly and I just can’t trust it!!! For a sensitive skin brand, you’d think they wouldn’t do things like add eucalyptus and lavender oil to things that previously were fragrance free?? I still do love the Oatmeal Repair mask though even with the reformulation. That still stands as a holy grail if I get a rosacea flare. I keep it in the fridge for “emergencies” and it works better than a steroid cream.
Fr! I'm really surprised about some of the things they choose to include. I don't even have sensitive skin but the ultra repair cream sometimes stings when I use it, presumably from the eucalyptus oil.
I agree! I had used FAB for years (6 or 7). Every year at Sephora, I would get their big ass tub of the Ultra Repair Cream on sale. I never knew they were reformulated, but that makes complete sense why I fell out of love with their Ultra Repair Cream!! I remember being appalled when I saw those "infused" scented Ultra Repair Creams. Funny enough, they're all at Tj Maxx now.
I like their hydrating oat toner! Buuuut yeah the ultra repair cream is how I found out that unless my skin is already in tip top shape with no irritation or dryness or barrier issues- at which point why would I need to ultra repair it lol- eucalyptus oil burns tf out of my face. I use tretanoin so I can't use stuff that could cause me irritation like that. I've been using the repair cream on my neck and chest to use it up since it was $$$$
I used to love the body shop because of their perfume oil section. Does anyone remember that? they used to have this round table with a bunch of different scented oils and you could mix your own scent or get them individually. I’m pretty sure they don’t do that anymore because I’ve been trying to hunt down their satsuma oil, but now it’s only a “home fragrance oil” that you can’t put on your skin.
Yes!! The satsuma oil was so good. Sometimes i get a whiff of something that smells similar and it really takes me back to my middle school years. Same with the Moringa oil spray!
Thank you for calling out the hypocrisy of cancelling one brand for doing something but supporting another that did the same thing. Everyone and everything is problematic.
As someone who worked for The Body Shop for a number of years I can confirm that they are an absolute trash company to work for. I do still purchase the one and only product from the store that was any good and nothing else. But yes… total nightmare and and a roller coaster of a company… super unethical and just gross.
I always found them to be a strange MLM company because the reason a company is MLM is to have consultants to all the work with minimal pay. Why have a body shop in every mall? Aren’t they taking sales away from their consultants?
OMG I remember when I was a young teen The Body Shop body butter was an absolute must have, EVERYBODY had to have these huge tubs of heavily scented thick AF cream 🤣 also their hemp line was everything, and we all thought we were edgy because it had a pot leaf on it ✌🏻 💨 🍃
I worked at The Body Shop here in the US in the late 90s, back when they still did (what I thought of as in my teens) socially-conscious campaigns and products. I really loved some of their hair and body products back then which have been discontinued for decades now. I would still use their Mango body butter and occasionally buy a small tub at Ulta if it’s on sale but I miss the original, more oil-based formula that you had to kind of keep in the refrigerator or it would liquefy. Best in the dry winter, awesome for after sun skin care. The White Musk scent came out when I was working there and to all of our surprise was such a hit that they created a whole line out of it. Everyone in my store absolutely hated it and we dreaded having to make products with the perfume oil (this was back when they still made customized products) because we would then smell like it all day. My favorite fragrance of theirs was Dewberry which I think I saw at their shop when I was in Scotland a few years ago, but it didn’t really smell the same to me as the one discontinued in the 90s. I also used one of their Tea Tree products often and was sad to find several years ago that the formulation changed. But I agree with you-even back when I worked there it felt like Bath and Body Works for the artsy, alternative girls (which fit me just fine lol). I think their ethical stance on trade, manufacturing, etc, was fairly solid in the 90s but I feel that our standards as consumers have changed quite a bit since then. While they were once kind of cutting-edge for their stance and practices in the 90s, those policies don’t even make the bare minimum requirement for people who are looking for ethical skin care products in 2022.
I had no idea that The Body Shop was doing the MLM thing, ugh. Any time a company resorts to that style of marketing, that just tells me that their products are probably not worth it. MLMs rely on this social pressure people feel to support their friend's "small business" (which is not really their business, but they believe it is). I've never bought anything from an MLM rep that I actually would have purchased anyway, it was out of feeling obligated to be supportive. I no longer will do this because I don't have the money to waste and don't want to enable these dishonest and predatory companies.
i really like the belief and first aid beauty products bc they’re so hydrating and basic products truly just a drink of water to the skin nothing. i’d love to see a video that’s like not dupes for popular or classic items but a “if you like this but wanna try something new try this”
I used to SWEAR by Laura Mercier’s skincare products. For that time in my life they worked really well for my skin. Then after a while they reformulated or discontinued most of the products I was using and my skin started breaking out like crazy with the newer products. So sad because I really loved when I could use all products from one brand and keep it simple.
Feel free to drag The Body Shop everytime James. The lung damage I get everytime I get near their shops, only Lush is worse and I live in a place where oud is a part of life. 😵
Yeah the only thing I plan on buying from The Body Shop in the future is *drum roll* fragrance 😂 (There are only so many affordable vegan and cruelty free fragrances that I can smell in store)
I applied for a job at Lush once and after being in there for a couple of hours, my tongue was swollen and I couldn't smell a thing anymore. I said no thanks to the job. 😂
I LOVE the smell of Lush stores. In fact I went and asked them if they have a room freshener of the same scent. It's all about sensitivity to fragrances. Nothing good or bad about it.
I started learning more about makeup at the start of Covid and I loved glossier because it was so simple and there wasn’t a lot of confusing different types of nonsense. But now that I’ve done more research and played with more products I’ve found them to be kinda overpriced and blah. I can get much better products for an equal or better price at Sephora. The only good thing was that they didn’t break me out which is why I have avoided drugstore brands since middle school.
Couldn’t agree more on your takes, and I won’t go near any company that ventures into shady MLM territory! Would love to get your opinion on innbeauty project’s skincare products, as well as farmacy!
The First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream is the only thing I've used that fixed my dry, cracked hands. My knuckles will crack to the point of bleeding and after using the lotion on my hands once they looked dramatically different the next day.
I miss the old formula! I was fine with the eucalyptus extract, but when they swapped that for the eucalyptus oil it just didn't work as well for me.😢 Plus, it's hard for me to keep trusting them when they reformulated so many things on the DL after the brand was sold. They could've at least put a note on their website or SOMETHING, but there was absolutely no warning. Edit: I'm glad it still works for you, though! Not trying to convince you to stop using it or anything.
@@karatalksaboutstuff7333 That makes a lot of sense, I didn't realize they had changed it. The first bottle I got was a small size and later I ordered the full size that didn't seem to work as well, I just looked and my newest bottle does have the oil.
@@allysonknight8826 Oh no! I know some people have said the new formulation is still great for them, so I'm sad to hear it's not working as well for you. FAB used to be my favorite brand...like, literally half my routine. I still might to back to using their cleanser because I miss it.
Could you please do a full vid debunking/explaining clean beauty/organic beauty? I have people trying o convert me and I feel like it’s a load of bs 😫💗
Totally agree about Biossance! I do still use + love their products, they just work extremely well for my very dry, acne-prone skin and I don’t have the wallet to trial and error with products elsewhere. But I liked the brand itself a heck of a lot more when their approach was eco-friendly+science, before it deep dove into militant clean beauty EWG “you’re gonna get cancers from chemicals” type bullcrap
I agree with you on majority of The Body Shop products, EXCEPT! The Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter is probably one of the best cleansing balms across the board of expensive to inexpensive that I've tried.
sunday riley! i remember when they were super hyped 6 years or so ago, and i was so obsessed with the desire to purchase their products, but couldn't really afford them at the time since i was a college student. i was finally able to at least sample some of their products and just couldn't understand why they were pushed so hard in the beauty... influencer? world. when i was finally able to afford their products, i had literally 0 desire to buy any lol
*Thank you for pointing out that The Body Shop are green washing!* I've been saying that for years and I can't believe how they are still seen as a "green" company. Just a few examples of shit they do/have done: 1. They used plastic micro beads in their scrubs, even after we were all made aware of how bad it is. 2. They still use liquid plastics in their products. 3. All their packaging is plastic. They even changed out their metal hand cream tubes for plastic. 4. They use a lot of palm oil. Their soaps are primarily palm oil, even the olive one. 5. They are yet to release a packaging free line.
Some of this is incorrect, plastic micro beads aren’t used in any of the scrubs and some ranges use glass packaging as well as refill stations to refill certain ranges in aluminium bottles. Plastic is hard to avoid, so they use recycled plastics and have a recycling scheme for customers to give back their packaging to send for recycling. Yes Bodyshop aren’t great, but they are now trying since being owned by Natura
@@aak1992 They don't have micro beads anymore, no, and they made a big deal about quitting using them. But in like 2010-2011 when plastic micro beads were all over the media, they were still using them. A green company wouldn't even have used them in the first place. About the rest of the claims, yes, they do have a some glass packaging but no "naked" products what so ever. My local Body Shop doesn't have any refill stations.
@@LillyPotter7 There's no such thing as ethical palm oil, not for the environment nor for the people working in the plantations. "Sustainable" palm oil just means that they reuse areas already deforested instead of cutting down more rainforest, however, the plantations are still a huge threat to biodiversity. The ethical thing is to not use palm oil and let the rainforests grow back.
Yes, Belif has always been that expensive. I love it when my skin is stressed, but can't justify the cost when I can get other brands that work as well at a fraction of the price.
Do you have any substitutes you like for Belif? I use their face cream religiously since purging hyaluronic acid from my life. However, if something works for half the price I’m hungry for info!!
The Im from fig oil balm cleanser is some of the best I’ve ever used. I love then I met you cleansing balm but found it didn’t last as long as the Im from brand. It’s AMAZING at removing drag makeup 💄
I'm guilty of using The Body Shop products as daily skincare 😬 It was the first actual "skincare" brand I used after Simple (I was a late bloomer for skincare) and I used their Vitamin E cream cleanser, toner and SPF30 for months and I actually quite liked them a lot, my skin reacted so nicely to them. I also felt quite fancy because they were the most expensive skincare I'd ever bought. It all went downhill when I tried one of their new moisturisers and it burnt my face, and tried their cleansing butter and it seems to break me out every time I use it. I now don't use any of their products for my face but I do continue to use their yoghurts and scrubs for my body because they work for me. The issue with the brand is they're definitely overpriced for what they are, they feel quite novelty and they seem to pump out new products all the time and love to discontinue perfectly good products at a constant rate. The smell is also insane, I don't want that strong of a scent on my face. They're just not up to date with modern skincare and everything they release seems like something brands released about two years ago.
I will forever be thankful to you James for introducing me to the I'm From Honey Mask. It really changed the game for me and it's my go to mask. However, you are right and honestly after the Fig launch. I don't check for their products anymore. It's not catching me attention. So I just stick with buying myself and my mom the face mask and Rice toner whenever any of the K beauty brands sites have a sale. As for Belif, I love their eye cream at night. But I really have to stretch it out that little bottle for months and they are making it hard for me to justify repurchasing them. $50 here in the US to buy their eye cream. Like if it came in a bigger bottle. Fine I wouldn't mind, but such a small bottle and 50. I just can't
My mom and I loved the belief brand. They used to be super affordable, then I think once the obsession with K beauty hit, their prices started to sky rocket. My mom was obsessed with their water bomb moisturizer but once it got to $50 she was out. Sad to see they went that way because we'd both still use their products if they had stayed as a affordable good everyday brand.
I used to feel the same way about Clinique Moisture Surge but the price is ridiculous… I am using the Trader Joe’s gel cream at the moment but it’s not quite the same. I’m going to try the Drmtlgy one next. Price per oz it’s actually cheaper than the Neutrogena one (which was also a fail for me). It’s so difficult to find a gel moisturizer that is affordable and works for my skin. I don’t bother trying the Inkey List one because their products are so tiny that with the price they actually aren’t a great deal at all.
I loved the belief water bomb and aqua bomb, recently bought it after several years, and I HATED it. It has so much citrus essential oil and extremely irritating. I was shocked at how much the formula changed and the hike up in price.
Bath & Body Works gift sets seems to be the “standard” gift for teachers. I’m not ungrateful at all but I am bored with that brand (except the candles) and would far prefer Starbucks gift card.
I think the theory is that the parents want you to enjoy some relaxing time while away from the stresses of your job, however I do understand the functionality of a teacher gift and something less superfluous
I’m guessing you are in the us? At my sisters elementary school they do a little email where the teachers say what they would like to receive as gifts. As someone who’s British I found this astonishing, we never gave gifts to teachers when I was at school never mind them getting to pick and choose what they would like.
@@kayleighshaw3203 In my public school district, gifts from students are few and far between and have to be under a certain value ($20). It also depends on the culture of the population you serve. The $20 limit isn’t true for all American school districts and it is not at all true for private schools. I’ve had private school students transfer in and try to spend embarrassing amounts of money either directly for me or for equipment for my classroom and I’ve turned it all down. In all fairness to teachers who DO get many expensive gifts and donations, as long as it doesn’t sway how they do their grading, then I don’t see the problem. Honestly, how different is this than paying a new science hall, tennis court, or campus facility just to get your kid in? It isn’t…Private schools and colleges have been giving preference to the children of wealthy contributors for centuries. That is the way it is everywhere, even in Britain.
For me it’s Missha. They were one of my first good base product matches but their shade ranges shrink instead of expanding. I also find hard to know what’s being discontinued or if they are just very affected by supply chain issues. When I got into k beauty they had an OG serum and essence and now they’re barely mentioned.
Very upsetting to hear these new things about Biossance! Ive tried nearly every brand in Sephora and every single time i try a new product it sucks or irritates my skin or has too many nonsense-ingredients and I find myself resorting back to Biossance products. They just work for me and never disappoint.
I used to use their sunscreen and absolutely loved it! I would still say it's on of my faves but I've switched to supergoop's "play" spf 50 because of the protection it provides and the price is better and it smells really good. But yes finding that out about Biossance was disappointing!
@@jessicabalducci6214 I used the Biossance sunscreen and it was absolutely repulsive. It left my skin dry and completely void of moisture (note, I use both a thick moisturizer and oil prior to my SPF). And the white cast? It looked like I was preparing to mime on the streets of Paris
@@jessicabalducci6214 LOVE their sunscreen also! Works so well under makeup and no need for a moisturizer beforehand. I've only tried the mattescreen and the unseen (clear) one from Supergoop and HATED both. It's a texture issue for me but i'm picking up that one next when I run out of my current one.
I developed a allergic to reaction to Biossance's spf, subsequently to SPF in general (tried Supergoop). This is after 7mos of use. I still use some of their other products tho.
When I started using Korean cosmetics (2016-2017), I was obsessed with Innisfree and SkinFood. I also recommended (when I was running a blog about k-beauty cosmetics) Zymogen, Neogen and a few other companies. Innisfree changed his cosmetic compositions and ingriediens (for the worse), the rest somehow ceased to interest me. I have been buying cosmetics from only four companies for a year (I rarely make exceptions): Make P:Rem, CosRx, Bonajour and Pyunkang Yul. And sheet masks from Mediheal. I know they work great and that's enough for me.
Happy Sunday! I had to let Belief go to the special treat corner as well. The price is ridiculous. Same with Tatcha. I decided to just stick with the Rice Toner and let I’m From go as well. It’s truly indicative of a much larger problem that isn’t just relegated to skin care. I see as simple greed.🤷🏽♀️
I completely agree with the biossance one!! An influencer I follow went on this “brand trip” for what just to show pretty picture of product in a foreign location.. and that’s it. I didn’t even care to look into what they were advertising cuz there was no reason for me to care. I didn’t even see an explanation for why they travels to where they did. In my opinion it was just the brand flying them out to a location as a “payment” to post. 🤷🏻♀️
What killed the brand was being sold to a huge corporation (I think P&G?). As a person with dry skin, I used to be such a FAB fangirl. The new owners came in like, "Okay, let's stop being cruelty free, make all the formulas worse, and pretend like everything is still business as usual." Ugh.
I have very dry skin and I personally didn't find it that great. It was good but I had to layer it with a mask to get enough hydration. For the price, it's genuinely more effective just to buy a COSRX moisturiser.
I really appreciate these videos! I'm totally new to the skincare/you tube world and have been watching you and a few others religiously the past few months (also love your podcast, the WT channel and Robert's content!). I was trying to 'respect the order' while still watching things specific to my skincare knowledge gap and I find videos like this, or updates are super helpful to be able to know which products you've loved in the past, you still like or not (and why not). Thanks for all the content and laughs. I have become way too obsessed with skincare, from zero to mach speed. I work to pay my skincare bills haha
I’ve been purchasing the Belif moisturizing bomb for over five years and I’ve paid the same price, $50 here in Canada, since the beginning. I can’t really speak to their other products, but I haven’t noticed a drastic price increase as I also buy their makeup removing balm from time-to-time.
I used to use A LOT of Lancôme actually all the Genefique line and I loved Visionnaire line as well but the cost vs the ingredients I just was not as smart about it then as I am now!
For me it has to be La Roche Posay. I've only tried three of their products because well, I'm not rich. Either way, I've had issues with all three of them. Their effaclar cleanser dried up my skin too much, and I have really oily skin. Then, their serozinc spray thingy literally did nothing for me. Not a thing. And finally, their anthelios fluid sunscreen (the normal version, not the tinted one). It feels pretty light and good on the skin, not too bad for my oily skin BUT it leaves a yellow cast. It's a patchy sickly yellow and I've literally never heard of anyone complaining about this except one person, so idk if I'm just crazy lol. Anyways, yeah. I've never heard of anyone trashing LRP, so I wanted to get this off my chest.
OMG I would love a deep dive on the Body Shop!! For me it wasn't that their products were so fragrant but that the main selling point was the scent and not the effect if that makes sense
Maybe back in the day, but we don’t do that now. Body care yes, but skincare shouldn’t have scents. But alas, all the skincare bar aloe Vera does. I make sure customers know it has fragrance before purchasing and let them try the product before buying. But it’s far from being a selling point
I'm 43 and going on a tropical vacation in 2 weeks. I need help! I am terrified even with sunscreen that my face is going to get too much sun. I'm already trying to get rid of hyperpigmentation from when I spent time in the sun carelessly. What products can I use and not use? Obv I won't be using any acids or retinol. Will a good moisturizer for morning and night be enough for 10 days? I should know this, but I'm finding too many contradictions.
I fell out of love with Sunday Riley ceramic slip cleanser and quit. I had to repurchase because it's the only thing that tames my hormonal acne on my chin. I only buy it on sale. I can't justify spending 35.00 on a cleanser but it does last about 6 months for me.
Yes to your take on Biossance! Whenever I see a clean-beauty language or claims on a brand, IMMEDIATELY NO. Goodbye! I believe that if a product is effective, a brand does not need to resort to the toxic clean beauty campaign.
I totally hate the "clean" stuff with biossance too (and other brands), especially when they started adding in essential oils which irritate my skin. I haven't heard about that brand trip either. It sounds confusing and pointless. All that being said, I do still buy 2 things from them. The eye gel is great, it actually makes a visible difference for my eyes. Nothing can get rid of genetic dark undereyes, but it does brighten up my undereyes and provide plumping but it is light for under makeup. I really like that it actually has a lasting improvement and not just a caffeine or mica cream that doesn't make any lasting effect. So I stopped using the eye gel after a year of using it because my undereyes looked great. Then a few months later I started seeing more darkening again, so I realized it was actually doing something. I've been buying it since. I also have really been enjoying the copper peptide serum. It's nice to use and more affordable than buying a separate hyaluronic acid serum and copper peptide serum. I really like that they are combined and I've been enjoying it and feel like it does help with skin plumping.
@@luckbealady2010 oh my goodness... My mom! She puts lavender oil on her face. And it doesn't affect her negatively at all. I don't understand how I got the sensitive skin lol. I can't get anywhere near EOs, even on my body. Artificial fragrance is actually ok most of the time for me too, it's really mostly EOs that mess me up.
I’m enjoying the eye gel too, lovely and easy texture. I’m on the fence about the Copper serum! I find it less hydrating than my TO HA+B5 serum, BUT it hasn’t made my skin angry so not complaining yet. An FYI though, the copper serum mustn’t be layered with (most) vitamin c serums. It can be layered with an oil-soluble vitamin c, but not a traditional water-based ascorbic acid or salt form.
It's hard for me to say that I've fallen out of love with I'm From when I repeatedly make large orders from the brand, but I totally agree that I don't pay attention to their new releases anymore. Even with their older releases, it seems like each collection has one or maybe two stand out products that are awesome and the rest are usually just meh.
Tbh First Aid Beauty is pretty good for body products (their KP scrub and moisturizer is nice for instance, and they have some really great hand creams), but I agree that their facial skincare does tend to be bit underwhelming.
I do like the kp scrub and lotion but I noticed the formula of the scrub got really funky after only a little while, started smelling weird and got a bit chunkier. It shouldn't have gone bad that quickly and idk if it was just a bad tube or what. Never really found anything else that works well
Totally agree about your choices. Paula's choice underwhelmed me. Nothing horrible, but nothing wonderful either. I'd love to hear your reviews of Maelove skincare. I have great success with their products and price point is lovely as well. Thank you! Always love your content.
I fell out of love with Biologique Recherche. Their p50 didn’t work for me (the gentlest did nothing as an exfoliater and the next step up almost burnt my face off🤪). And their moisturisers & serums were, for me & the price that they are, underwhelming. I think for that price point I just expect miracles (which no product can give of course), so I couldn’t justify it to myself. There are just so many brands at a cheaper price who work great, so I’ll stick to those!
Wow, really bringing that 90s fire lately, first with the fa-shun vid-yo, now talking about Body Shop! That was my jam as a 90s teen wannabe hippie. Fuzzy Peach and Dewberry were my favorite scents. The parsley mint mask really helped calm my teen skin, but when they stopped making it I never went back. When my daughter had teen acne, I looked up the mask I used, and that's when I discovered the mlm part. No thanks!
Thank you so much for speaking about EWG! As a scientist, it is really frustrating to see misinformation being shared as “science”. It’s fear mongering without a proper assessment of the scientific literature and fundamentals of toxicology.
I live in Korea and use Belif. They have always been expensive. In Korea you get a lot of freebies when you shop there. They also have a membership app were you collect stamps and get free products throughout the year. I also notice that products that are sold in Korea weren't available overseas. The overnight vitamin c mask is amazing!
I used to defend The Body Shop from such opinions since I do see some people still benefit from it, me included when I started my skincare journey. But the more I learn from people I talk to and from videos like yours, I’ve outgrown them and my skin got even better. The one thing that really sets me off is their new “business strategy.” It just doesn’t sit right with me :(
@@Beckface26 as discussed by James, they have this program called Body Shop at Home where you sign up for a fee so you can independently sell their products on your own time. You can conduct demos whenever wherever. So it’s another side of their business that seems to be growing very quickly.
@@aak1992 I used to as well. Like James, I have nothing against fragrance in skincare because I’m not sensitive to it. It’s just they never really made things better. They would introduce something and say it’s “new” yet they’ve been years too late since competition have been doing it already.
You introduced me to I’m From & I also only use the products you mentioned liking, the rest of it honestly just seemed like a reach to me. The honey mask will always be my favorite mask!!
James is it true you say ‘perfection doesn’t exist’ 3 times in the mirror when your doing your skincare routine? Your so cute your the only person I trust with my skin, you’ve changed my skin thank you 🥰🥰🥰
Andrew Sandelovich 1 second ago I’m half out the door with The Body Shop… they just have this “sleep” line that I like. As a night shift nurse I love that line of theirs for using before bed at 8am 💜🌙
I use to use Neutrogena skin care to no avail: anti-aging, then switched to hydroboost after about 6 months af no difference. Again, was seeing no results. Found you & the Inkey List! Did their formula quiz & SAW results within 3 weeks!!! I do still like the hydroboost body lotion tho.
I LOVE the hydroboost line LMAO. it’s the only thing that my sensitive acne prone skin likes! It’s crazy how everyone’s skin reacts so differently. Glad u found something that works for you !
First Aid Beauty used to be my bread and butter since I have eczema, but I noticed the reformulation the second my face began BURNING. Eucalyptus oil had been added for "antibacterial properties", which by the way, has very few studies that will back up that claim to consider adding it to a product. I also hate tea tree oil for the same reason.
I love to layer aloe gels under my body lotions for a little extra kick. It's like a toner for your body, it plumps everything up before you seal it in with a moisturizer.
I am new to the skin care world, I just used whatever, well I turned 50 this year, and that freaked me out, so I am trying everything. I do use the First Aid cleanser, and I like it. I am so confused on what to use. Someone sent me to your channel to see if I can get some ideas.
Getting Real With Robin: also watch the videos for the Budget Dermatologist. You can get quality skincare products at the drugstore and she points out the ones that are best.
Oh I can see you as my best friend after this video! I'm all about talking down of the brands when they stop delivering☺ I still have some hope in Biossance though, since they are local to me and their products are showing results. Hope they realize their mistake soon and cut off of the EWG affiliation.
I used to love SIMPLE and Drunk Elephant but stopped using Simple because it stopped working for me. Their double oil cleanser is still good though. As for Drunk Elephant,.their prices are ridiculous and after she sold yo a big conglomerate, I kinda lost respect for the brand and their values.
the Belif x VDL aqua bomb, imo, is... not worth the money. idk. it *feels* cheaper to me, overall (cosmetically). There are some reflective (?) bits in there, but it is in that weird in between makeup/skincare stage. I guess I would say they didn't get it all that right. Not bad, but not worth the money (like you said in the video). Also, if you (or Robert) were interested in the setting spray from that same Belif X VDL collab, just know that it smells VERY old school perfume. For some reason, they ditched the citrus-y Aqua Bomb smell for some reason. Anyway, thanks for another great video!
Would love to see a video about the body shop! Didnt they like steal the name and concept from someone? Think ive heard that, anyhow would love to see a little deep dive into the brand. Something feels odd about them 🤔
I was cringing hearing about the biossance stuff! I feel I'm quite discerning with make up brands (to the best of my limited knowledge of what's available online) but I'm not in the habit of investigating skincare brands although maybe I should be! I use a lot of biossance because my skin is outrageously reactive and it just responds really well to it.
Your voice reminds me of my childhood. I used to listen to cassette tapes to fall asleep and I think that the storyteller of "The Famous Five" (German version) and you have very similar voices. It is simply wonderful 🥰
First Aid Beauty has always been hit and miss, but they've gone downhill after being purchased. I used to love their serum and toner but they've watered the formulations down and did it stealthily.
They were my "Holy Grail brand" before the sale and all the reformulations! Literally half my routine was FAB. Now I don't use a single product...but I might go back to their cleanser because I haven't found any I love as much as theirs.
As someone that used to work for the body shop in Canada, I completely agree with the green washing and everything else you’ve said. There’s something very off about them and there’s a lot of “unknown” things about them
Yes totally agree about First Aid Beauty! I have that sensitive, dryer skin and it was awful for me too. And it's so expensive! I tried a coconut air cream and it broke me out sooooo bad. No thank you!
While I somewhat agree with you about First Aid Beauty in terms of not bringing anything new to the table, It was the first skincare brand I ever tried when I wanted a skincare routine and back then there were only a handful of products and the no muss no fuss were perfect just to get my toes wet! They’ll always hold a special place in my heart (but I don’t use them anymore either 😉)
I was obsessed with Biossance for a short while as well, their lightweight gel moisturizer was like the best moisturizer I had ever used in my life. I used it for like 2 months, then sadly I think I must’ve developed a sensitivity to one of the ingredients, (I suspect the ginger extract) because it would start stinging my face unbearably… I even tried going back to it after a couple months of using other moisturizers but nope, still stung my face. Really sad cause I LOVED it but I still use their rose lip oil which I love, but I don’t really use any of their other products anymore because started to feel a bit overpriced and I realized I kinda like my drugstore aveeno, eucerin, and neutrogena more… Now I’m not really loyal to any one brand, I just use the best products for my face regardless of brand
The same thing happened to me! I used their sunscreen for a few months and my skin became horribly sensitive. I'm still trying to get my skin back to wear it was. 😩 I can only use CeraVe wash and skin fix barrier repair gel moisturizer now. Everything else seems to sting but it's better than when I was actively using the biossance products.
@@breezyb5616 yeahhh that's crazy! sorry it happened to you too. took me like 1-2months of using super gentle cleansers and moisturizers before i got back to normal and not so sensitive skin anymore. dang hopefully your skin goes back to what it was before soon :/
PLEASE review the body shop liquid peels! I have been in a confused state for years whether it's actually the dead skin cells clumping off or they just have an ingredient that makes the gel clump off and it's all a gimmick. Really want a review I trust to look into it have a go!
First Aid Beauty stung my skin - and I only tried moisturizers. (3 different ones). I have dry-ish skin, but not a lot of problems.. no rosacea or excessive acne, or anything. I don’t know why it hurt to use. That actually kinda hurt my feelings a bit because I really wanted to like it
Definitely a 'when beauty turns ugly' video about Body Shop please!!
Seconded. Always hated the stores and the overwhelming odors but their history absolutely stinks especially their founder.
I'd love a deep dive on this! I have heard odd things here and there about them
Yes please!
Yes!!!!
Yes!
I was just about to buy the ultra repair serum & cream! Do you recommend anything instead? My skin is sensitive & dry. Thanks so much for that info!
@@x.Kristen.x I know people have their problems with drunk elephant, but the Lala retro is honestly my favorite moisturizer!! My skin is super dry and sensitive and it helps me so much. Another (more affordable alternative) is the La Roche Toleriane line!!!
@@Pupsii_Cola Thank you so much! Definitely going to try the drunk elephant!
It’s just so confusing to me! Still not seen any content to learn about what good they did either. Seems like a wasted trip
I think they may have got some backlash on Instagram or Twitter and decided to keep a low profile because yeah it doesn't make sense otherwise. 🤔
Greenwashing is peak MLM behavior, too. I hate how much of the beauty industry is MLM crap (even in stores now!)
Yeah didn’t she step down as CEO? It strayed very far after that!
Paula’s Choice was pretty good back ca. 2007. I checked back on the site recently and didn’t recognize ANYTHING:-(

This! Wow I was so happy to hear someone shame the EWG for what it is.
same thing with aluminium in deodorants! they injected huge amounts of aluminium compounds into the veins of mice and they developed alzheimer's-like brain degeneration. so now we have 50 "natural" deodorant brands
For me, you could have included Drunk Elephant. I bought SO MUCH FROM THEM and they did nothing for my skin. I bought every product, made the skincare "cocktail" like many suggested. Nothing. A big waste of money.
The Marula Oil is nice but not a game changer.
Yes! Nothing worked.
Yep! Waste of money for what it is
drunk elephant is luxury so i just went eh. most luxury skincare is just nice but u obviously dont need them & can get similar stuff for way cheaper. its just less aesthetic packaging ig.
Pretty sure he's openly been "not a fan" of Drunk Elephant, she definitely doesn't deserve to be here anyways 🤡
Yeahhh I agree. I was 100% that person being like ‘what’s next?!’ From the brand but I was disappointed every time
+1, should be like Krave Beauty’s philosophy
Smaller indie brands like Krave, Stratia, MaeLove, etc are so much better about releasing fewer, consistently high-quality products. As soon as a brand is purchased by investors the ONLY motive is profit and they start cranking out a slew of "decent" products. I'm not on the I-Hate-Capitalism Train, but crap like this makes me fully understand why capitalism gets so much criticism these days.
The Vitamin Tree water cream is my stable (especially in the summer). Nothing balances my oils and dehydration like this one.
Exactly how I feel!!
Hell yes! Great comment!
Can you please share a few of your favorites? I suffer with rosacea so badly. Thanks so much.
You have summed up how I feel about Bodyshop. The greenwashing isn’t unreal and the MLM aspect is horrid.
Agreed. I used their SPF and it was atrocious. It not only completely dehydrated my skin, the white cast made me look like a clown
I only really like their oil cleanser
I’m all for a body shop episode of ‘when beauty turns ugly’!
Hyrim made me buy first aid beauty 🤣🤣🤣
I like their hydrating oat toner! Buuuut yeah the ultra repair cream is how I found out that unless my skin is already in tip top shape with no irritation or dryness or barrier issues- at which point why would I need to ultra repair it lol- eucalyptus oil burns tf out of my face. I use tretanoin so I can't use stuff that could cause me irritation like that. I've been using the repair cream on my neck and chest to use it up since it was $$$$
The beet package looks like one of those small paint samples you can get to see if you like it for your room.
LOOOOOL it does 😂😂
It's giving lotion you would buy from a local small business at a coffee shop gift section, not large established company
Yeah, don’t sell those anymore. Everything now is just more expensive and not much choice of product like there used to be
Yes. I still have the musk oil after 15 years!
Hemp hand cream and ginger shampoo are the only decent products
I always found them to be a strange MLM company because the reason a company is MLM is to have consultants to all the work with minimal pay. Why have a body shop in every mall? Aren’t they taking sales away from their consultants?
Is that why they go overboard with the virtue signalling? I thought something was a miss.... so they don't help people in poverty?
Why are they bad?
OMG I remember when I was a young teen The Body Shop body butter was an absolute must have, EVERYBODY had to have these huge tubs of heavily scented thick AF cream 🤣 also their hemp line was everything, and we all thought we were edgy because it had a pot leaf on it ✌🏻 💨 🍃
My cousin bought the hemp lip balm and her dad was so mad!
I no longer will do this because I don't have the money to waste and don't want to enable these dishonest and predatory companies.
i really like the belief and first aid beauty products bc they’re so hydrating and basic products truly just a drink of water to the skin nothing. i’d love to see a video that’s like not dupes for popular or classic items but a “if you like this but wanna try something new try this”
i love the petty series😭 ur opinions aren't even petty i think your reasons are all really valid!
Yeah the only thing I plan on buying from The Body Shop in the future is *drum roll* fragrance 😂
(There are only so many affordable vegan and cruelty free fragrances that I can smell in store)
I can’t even walk past a Lush without wanting to throw up
I applied for a job at Lush once and after being in there for a couple of hours, my tongue was swollen and I couldn't smell a thing anymore. I said no thanks to the job. 😂
I LOVE the smell of Lush stores. In fact I went and asked them if they have a room freshener of the same scent. It's all about sensitivity to fragrances. Nothing good or bad about it.
@@PersianPowergirl same lol, but I see how it could be overwhelming
Yeahhhh I’ve seen it so amazing things for people with drier skin

Have you trie O Keefefe's working hands cream? Give it a shot if not...AMAZING stuff!
Yes, drag The Body Shop! They were okay way back in the day, but the greenwashing sent them downhill, and the MLM is the nail in the coffin.
Not to mention the prices...
sunday riley! i remember when they were super hyped 6 years or so ago, and i was so obsessed with the desire to purchase their products, but couldn't really afford them at the time since i was a college student. i was finally able to at least sample some of their products and just couldn't understand why they were pushed so hard in the beauty... influencer? world. when i was finally able to afford their products, i had literally 0 desire to buy any lol
*Thank you for pointing out that The Body Shop are green washing!* I've been saying that for years and I can't believe how they are still seen as a "green" company. Just a few examples of shit they do/have done:
The palm oil alone, terrible.
A note on #4: yes they use palm oil but they make a point to source it ethically instead of some place cheap and shitty

I loved it too. I wonder what would be considered a suitable dupe or alternative to it!
@@emilyclaire995 a couple years ago I tried to find a more affordable dupe but didn't have much luck but I am sure there must be something out there.
@@Aishala K beauty has to have something!!
I’m not a teacher BUT I do receive my fair share of bath and body works gift sets too. What do I do with them? Re-gift 🤣
I’m guessing you are in the us? At my sisters elementary school they do a little email where the teachers say what they would like to receive as gifts. As someone who’s British I found this astonishing, we never gave gifts to teachers when I was at school never mind them getting to pick and choose what they would like.
Teachers get gifts????
When I got into k beauty they had an OG serum and essence and now they’re barely mentioned.
omg any video with “petty james” is my new favorite video 😌😌 this is a good evening for the petty community (Me)
Completely agree that First Aid Beauty is way too overpriced for what it is and the ingredients they use!
When my skin was damaged the first aid beauty repair cream burned. Apparently my skin really really really hates eucalyptus oil.
This is why we love James, cause he keeps it real and holds these brands accountable 👏🏽👏🏽
I'm going to write down all your reccommendations. Thank you!
We need a detailed Body Shop video... How is it that the whole world predicted their surmise except them?!?
The Body Shop Makeup cleansing balm is THE BOMB. And at the price it sells for, it gives the Clinique one a run for its money.
I love their Camomile cleansing oil! Totally agree its way better than Clinique Take the Day Off
brought me out in a rash
Belif's eye cream is literally the Best ^^
I completely agree with the biossance one!! An influencer I follow went on this “brand trip” for what just to show pretty picture of product in a foreign location.. and that’s it. I didn’t even care to look into what they were advertising cuz there was no reason for me to care. I didn’t even see an explanation for why they travels to where they did. In my opinion it was just the brand flying them out to a location as a “payment” to post. 🤷🏻♀️
Thank you farmer has a rice toner that is similar to the I’m from one but with more body to it. My skin loves it!
First Aid Beauty quality seems to have gone down since going viral. It's disappointing.
I see Belif, I clicked. Love the brand but I agree, so expensive. Will still buy though because it's one of the few brands that work for my skin.
I can't do the essential oils in anything.
@@luckbealady2010 me neither! Such a bad time with essential oils on my face.
I have no idea who thinks that EO’s don’t wreak havoc.
@@luckbealady2010 oh my goodness... My mom! She puts lavender oil on her face. And it doesn't affect her negatively at all. I don't understand how I got the sensitive skin lol. It can be layered with an oil-soluble vitamin c, but not a traditional water-based ascorbic acid or salt form.
the body shop being an mlm on top of being expensive and subpar rly made me never want to try anything from them again
Yeah that really was the final nail in the coffin for me!
I love the Biosassance skin line. The lactic acid is amazing for me. I am also a huge fan of the squalene and cooper peptide serum.
If you're struggling with KP, I found Amlactin very helpful! Hard to find outside of the US though.
I do like the kp scrub and lotion but I noticed the formula of the scrub got really funky after only a little while, started smelling weird and got a bit chunkier. It shouldn't have gone bad that quickly and idk if it was just a bad tube or what. Never really found anything else that works well
@@shelbybilicki Oh wow that's weird, I've never had that happen before. Maybe it was a bad tube like you said? idk
The one thing that really sets me off is their new “business strategy.” It just doesn’t sit right with me :(
What's their new business strategy?
@@Beckface26 as discussed by James, they have this program called Body Shop at Home where you sign up for a fee so you can independently sell their products on your own time. You can conduct demos whenever wherever. So it’s another side of their business that seems to be growing very quickly.

"A mouse got cancer once after it drunk a bucket of parabens" is the best sentence I've ever heard.😆😆😆
I love to layer aloe gels under my body lotions for a little extra kick. It's like a toner for your body, it plumps everything up before you seal it in with a moisturizer.

the Belif x VDL aqua bomb, imo, is... not worth the money. idk. it *feels* cheaper to me, overall (cosmetically).

That actually kinda hurt my feelings a bit because I really wanted to like it
Omg I thought I was the only one!!! It iterated my skin so much
The coconut water cream did the same to me!
