Vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji. This is an Irish folk song, whose exact origins are unknown, but it's speculated that it descends from 17th century songs about highwaymen who roamed the many regions of Ireland. This arrangement uses the Seagull Merlin, the fiddle and the flute. Lyrics: As I was going over the far famed Kerry mountains I met with captain Farrell and his money he was counting. I first produced my pistol, and then produced my rapier. Said stand and deliver, for I am a bold deceiver, Musha ring dumma do damma da Whack for the daddy ‘ol Whack for the daddy ‘ol There’s whiskey in the jar I counted out his money, and it made a pretty penny. I put it in my pocket and I took it home to Jenny. She sighed and she swore, that she never would deceive me, But the devil take the women, for they never can be easy I went into my chamber, all for to take a slumber, I dreamt of gold and jewels and for sure it was no wonder. But Jenny took me charges and she filled them up with water, Then sent for captain Farrel to be ready for the slaughter. It was early in the morning, as I rose up for travel, Up comes a band of footmen and likewise captain Farrel. I first produced my pistol, for she stole away my rapier, I couldn’t shoot the water so a prisoner I was taken. If anyone can aid me, it’s my brother in the army, If I can find his station down in Cork or in Killarney. And if he’ll come with me, we’ll go roving near Kilkenny, And I swear he’ll treat me better than my own disporting Jenny
A wonderful rendition. I was just thinking I should be assured that you were aware of the greater perfect system. How old do you suppose the 20 stringed Lyra she is?
@@markanthony2651 Since you're asking about the Greater Perfect System, then I assume you're asking about it in the context of Greek music which I don't know the answer to. But 20 stringed lyres are attested visually as far back as Sumer
Have you ever made a video about Ancient Egyptian Music? When I hear pieces supposed to be Ancient Egyptian they all either sound like Westernised Arabic Music or just give up and sound like an electric keyboard (Plants vs Zombies 2 for example). Id love to learn about it.

I don't think I've ever heard this song interpreted this way - kind of melancholy like the lyrics instead of the usual whiskey-induced rollick! Love that you found a fresh take.
Dear Farya, I hope you see my comment. Make us a music about the Abbasid era because it is a shared empire between the Arabs and the Persians because I know that you will create a unique masterpiece.🇮🇶❤🇮🇷
When we were kids, me and my siblings would listen to Irish music non-stop, but there's none so dear to my heart as this one. It's got some bittersweet memories attached, yet it never fails to make me smile. Thank you for this lovely rendition, sir, and please keep up the amazing work

Have you spent time in Ireland before? That's a fair good singing accent, a bit like the older recordings of midlands people where the register was a little higher than it would be now. Fair play to you!
@@faryafaraji that's very interesting, the 'a' sound was similar enough that it worked very well. (Generally most Irish people will pronounce 'a' like 'awh' not 'ayy') anyways it was very good. Fair play man

You've covered one of my favorite Irish songs!!! Lovely cover! I love how it's slower and more subdued, and arguably more beautiful, than the popular version by Luke Kelly and The Dubliners.
Great video. Could you maybe make a video on how Oriental styles of music have influenced music in Iberia, specifically Fado in Portugal and Flamenco in Southern Spain?
I would refer to my videos "The Greco-Roman Roots of Middle-Eastern Music," and "Why Does Greek Music Sound Eastern?" as they will particularly be relevant to the premise behind your question, which may not be as correct as your wording may suggest; i.e Iberian music wasn't significantly influenced by Oriental styles, it sounded like that since before the Arabs, and the similarities are simply due to the Arabs having adopted the common Mediterranean sound. Instead of "eastern" influence on Iberian music, we're instead dealing with a situation where Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern music had the same shared roots even before Arabic invasion, hence their similarities
@@arturmonteiro8541Not as different from pre-Arabic invasion as one might think; it was a modal, Greco-Roman based music tradition before it, and was that after too
I wonder if there is a connection to Appalachia with this music style or if I'm just imagining things. looked it up and the Seagull Merlin is based on the Appalachian dulcimer, and the latter instrument was used by Scotch-Irish immigrants, which suggests some kind of connection!
The folk music of Appalachia in particular preserved Scottish, Irish, Welsh, and English influences. It's incredibly fascinating. I wish there were more research on the topic, but Appalachia is criminally under appreciated and nearly universally looked down upon by the "cultured" people of society here in America.
