Whiskey in the Jar - Irish Song

- Vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji. This is an Irish folk song, whose exact origins are unknown, but it's speculated that it descends from 17th century songs about highwaymen who roamed the many regions of Ireland. This arrangement uses the Seagull Merlin, the fiddle and the flute.
Lyrics:
As I was going over the far famed Kerry mountains
I met with captain Farrell and his money he was counting.
I first produced my pistol, and then produced my rapier.
Said stand and deliver, for I am a bold deceiver,
Musha ring dumma do damma da
Whack for the daddy ‘ol
Whack for the daddy ‘ol
There’s whiskey in the jar
I counted out his money, and it made a pretty penny.
I put it in my pocket and I took it home to Jenny.
She sighed and she swore, that she never would deceive me,
But the devil take the women, for they never can be easy
I went into my chamber, all for to take a slumber,
I dreamt of gold and jewels and for sure it was no wonder.
But Jenny took me charges and she filled them up with water,
Then sent for captain Farrel to be ready for the slaughter.
It was early in the morning, as I rose up for travel,
Up comes a band of footmen and likewise captain Farrel.
I first produced my pistol, for she stole away my rapier,
I couldn’t shoot the water so a prisoner I was taken.
If anyone can aid me, it’s my brother in the army,
If I can find his station down in Cork or in Killarney.
And if he’ll come with me, we’ll go roving near Kilkenny,
And I swear he’ll treat me better than my own disporting Jenny

A wonderful rendition. I was just thinking I should be assured that you were aware of the greater perfect system. How old do you suppose the 20 stringed Lyra she is?
@@markanthony2651 Since you're asking about the Greater Perfect System, then I assume you're asking about it in the context of Greek music which I don't know the answer to. But 20 stringed lyres are attested visually as far back as Sumer
Have you ever made a video about Ancient Egyptian Music? When I hear pieces supposed to be Ancient Egyptian they all either sound like Westernised Arabic Music or just give up and sound like an electric keyboard (Plants vs Zombies 2 for example). Id love to learn about it.
@@ion_tiriac Unfortunately evidence is so scant on Ancient Egyptian music that whatever video I would make would be just me going "we barely know anything"

1:50 You can never miss an adorable kitten in a farya video.
I’m astounded at how farya can make me fall in love with music from literally every culture 😅
All music is Farya
Ah, there he is at 01:50. I figured Farya wouldn't be able to spend much time recording songs without a cat around...
How is farya’s Irish accent so good lol
As an Irishman, I always get a bit of a feeling in my belly when I see your celtic/irish videos. Our culture is long from dead, I know it 🥹 🇮🇪
Conradh na gaeilge is still around yet
No brother, this song tkaes me back to 25 years ago, when i was much younger, full of youth and energy
mate, if I had to pick a country from each continent with the best music and musicians, Ireland tops Europe!! Let the music carry the stories and history of old! Amazing poets and natural artists

The first Faraji song I already knew. A surprisingly sober performance, from my experience of hearing it before.
Unless you count his music in other videos, then I think me too
LEEEETSSS GOOO LADS AND LASSIES!

Always liked this one. They would sing it at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire.
01:50 kitty is back from the duduk wars 🗿
war hero that cat
I don't think I've ever heard this song interpreted this way - kind of melancholy like the lyrics instead of the usual whiskey-induced rollick! Love that you found a fresh take.
Long shadows on the lovely garden. Is summer coming to an end?
A handsome Black Irish fella sings an old favorite tune
A handsome black cat claims his share of admiration....
Damn. Your voice fits so many different cultures and traditional songs. I am so impressed and jealous. Beautiful as usual, and well done!
No words. It's 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Not bad! Adding to the playlist :) Greetings from Ireland. Maith thú
Great work on this song, Farya! I just realized the Union Irish Brigade took it and changed the words during the American Civil War 🇮🇪 🇺🇸
I love this song so much! 🥰 We used to play it at ren faire all the time when I ate, breathed and lived ren faire haha
Haha yes! One of the funnest Irish folk songs to sing
Whiskey in a jar? Yummers

Positively bombastic 💥Would love to go for a drive listening to this.
Have you spent time in Ireland before? That's a fair good singing accent, a bit like the older recordings of midlands people where the register was a little higher than it would be now. Fair play to you!
I just sang this with my natural Canadian accent; I suppose our phonologies overlap enough that it blurs the line when we're singing
@@faryafaraji that's very interesting, the 'a' sound was similar enough that it worked very well. (Generally most Irish people will pronounce 'a' like 'awh' not 'ayy') anyways it was very good. Fair play man

Singulièrement sensationnel!
Bravo Farya!😎
Only Farya can nail both medieval Iranian music and Irish folk ballads
Amazing!!!🤩🤩🤩, your voice is like that of god !! I'd love to hear something from Russian folk songs!
Farya, this is wonderful! Chapeau bas!🍒
When we were kids, me and my siblings would listen to Irish music non-stop, but there's none so dear to my heart as this one. It's got some bittersweet memories attached, yet it never fails to make me smile. Thank you for this lovely rendition, sir, and please keep up the amazing work
Dear Farya, I hope you see my comment. Make us a music about the Abbasid era because it is a shared empire between the Arabs and the Persians because I know that you will create a unique masterpiece.🇮🇶❤🇮🇷
That would be wonderful! I second this idea 😊
Not something I would have expected him to cover, but he killed it regardless.
I love this song!! And what a gorgeous rendition! 💗💗
Love this! Well sung and played. You are a true citizen of the world, Farya.
I wonder if there is a connection to Appalachia with this music style or if I'm just imagining things.
looked it up and the Seagull Merlin is based on the Appalachian dulcimer, and the latter instrument was used by Scotch-Irish immigrants, which suggests some kind of connection!
Yeah as a whole North American music is extremely Irish influenced due to Irish immigration

Браво из Србије🇷🇸👍👏👏👏
A nice rendition! The Seagull has quite a banjo-like tone, I find. It works well with this tune.
Agreed! Despite being derived from the Appalachian dulcimer, I always found it to also have a banjo quality
Wow this was my favorite song as a kid, I never thought you would cover it
I love your version
I literally just ordered a seagull im so excited to play this
Hello Freya, your work is excellent, I wanted to say that you should sing the poems of Mani (prophet), especially Middle Persians one.
I recently listened to this song so it’s quite fitting for you to release it now
Oh My gosh! The cat!!! I was totally enjoying this classic, getting in the zone to write...and behold, a meowuse =----> =---->

Beautiful music as always, love hpw well you play cultures info music.
Beautiful!!!
Great job
You've covered one of my favorite Irish songs!!! Lovely cover! I love how it's slower and more subdued, and arguably more beautiful, than the popular version by Luke Kelly and The Dubliners.
Thank you very much. Grew up with this song, brings back good memories. ❤
Captain Farya, for the win!
Well played! You are the man of a thousand voices and languages! Even though Hellenic is one of your best, still you always manage to amaze us, with the style and collection of your songs! Keep up the good work!
Best version of this I've ever heard.
rrrrrrrrrrrrr.....eally nice song thanks!!
As always another banger, would love to hear your rendition of in taberna quando sumus
Comeee on bro do "me rapier" justice
Great! With this arrengement it is easier to focus and understand the lyrics too (especially if you are not native) and the pronunciation is authentic! :)
Oooooh, I think this is the first time the song was already familiar to me. Lovely rendition. Also, was that Mr. Spanish vengeance cat?
hahaha yeah it's Jon Snow the same one that curses in Spanish
@@faryafaraji I shall endeavour to remember Don Juan Nieves and his Spanish poetry of exquisite elegance.
Also, maybe one these days you can cover the one with the thieving lady (assuming it's public domain), where it is still the guy who gets fucked in the end (the black velvet band).

Great video. Could you maybe make a video on how Oriental styles of music have influenced music in Iberia, specifically Fado in Portugal and Flamenco in Southern Spain?
I would refer to my videos "The Greco-Roman Roots of Middle-Eastern Music," and "Why Does Greek Music Sound Eastern?" as they will particularly be relevant to the premise behind your question, which may not be as correct as your wording may suggest; i.e Iberian music wasn't significantly influenced by Oriental styles, it sounded like that since before the Arabs, and the similarities are simply due to the Arabs having adopted the common Mediterranean sound.
Instead of "eastern" influence on Iberian music, we're instead dealing with a situation where Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern music had the same shared roots even before Arabic invasion, hence their similarities
@@faryafaraji Interesting. As a Portuguese I’m not too educated on what Portuguese music was like prior to the Roman conquest and Al-Andalus.
@@arturmonteiro8541Not as different from pre-Arabic invasion as one might think; it was a modal, Greco-Roman based music tradition before it, and was that after too
More temperate climate zone music to add to my collection
You have a chameleon-like voice!
Every time I listen to this song I imagine the protagonist guy living with Jenny in an abandoned ship stuck somewhere. No idea why
I'd like to drink one
Could you do le canadien errant? i really like what you do.
Faryavaum, is on your mind the idea of releasing singles from all Epic Symphonies like you did with Justinianus? Also, releasing instrumentals of some of your arrangements? I like to meditate using music and yours already put me into a meditative state in times, like Re Gilardin & Le Roi Renaud or Zaman from The Janissary... I would love some 1 hour version of some of your arrangements just for meditation, maybe this is something for the future or for patrons on patreon, who knows...
I hope you'll also write for Mircea Cel Bătrân by Anton Pann :)
Jon Snow love of my life

Good song. Love the fiddle and flute combo. Could you do more bagpipe music next, maybe try doing The Foggy Dew.
Id love to see you do some ancient (1000-100BC) Pictish music next. I feel you don't have enough Scottish representation going on lately. Thanks
