- From The Late Late Show - Tribute to The Dubliners March 1987
This is the first performance of their hit single - The Irish Rover which reached number 8 in the UK singles charts. It was Eamonn Campbell who came up with the idea to record a song with The Pogues for The Dubliners 25 Years Celebration album that he was producing at the time. It was Barney McKenna who thought of the song. One of the great collaborations.
RIP to Shane McGowan - A poet, a punk, a legend 💚💚💚 X

😢
Absolutely!! What a talent! Rest in peace Shane ❤
RIP 🍀
RIP both Ronnie Drew (1934-2008) and Shane MacGowan (1957-2023).
Two wonderful vocalists of two great folk Irish bands who will be remembered forever.
This performance just sees the Dubliners and Pogues enjoy a good laugh on stage with a modern Irish jig still played every 17th March today.
They got soul.
Thank you for this!
I love how you can see the mutual admiration and respect between them, and the fiddler for the Dubliners and the Tin Whistle player for the Pogues, just continue to grow throughout this performance.
Sorry for not knowing the name members names.
They will be always in Our hearts, never will forget them.
You just broke my heart. Thank you though. I didn’t know.
Not ashamed to say I cried hearing about Shane McGowan today. What a talent. Will never not love The Pogues (and the Dubs), especially this song.
Same .
😔☘💚
It broke my heart, not a good day, heard it before anything else. Rest In Peace, Shane
I broke my fvcking heart. What an artist and a poet.🍀
I did too another irish legend gone unfortunately ❤❤
2024 and it’s still wonderful 🎵
Definitely
The blood alcohol level on that stage would have defied physics. And yet, a true and brilliant performance.
Shane could have stood alone on that stage and your statement would still be true.
Ronnie Drew wasn’t a drinker
@@conormccaffery5821in irish metrics, yes
lol@@conormccaffery5821
As a Dane it was the very first time i found someone who could keep up with my drinking!
The fact that the younger musicians looks so happy to play with these legends and that the older musician looks at the younger musician with proud eyes is really beautiful.
Yeah, but this is from back in the mid-‘80s. Now those “younger” guys are really much older.

I want to be in a tiny Irish pub, with a low ceiling, wood panelled, Guinness in hand and singing this with everyone there. Love Ireland. 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦

Congrats! You just described the ideal St. Patrick's Day.

RIP Shane. An eternal legend of Irish folk music.
Correction: an eternal legend of music.
@@chrismullan7191 The utmost respect to Irish music, that is part of the World Heritage. Dante Alighieri mentions the Irish singers in the Divine Comedy.
The look on Ronnie's face when Mcgowen leads into the crescendo is just great, two bands showin' each other a glimpse of the different roads they walked. Just awesome.
I can never stop watching John as he looks at Spider whistling away on his pipe - every time they show him he's watching Spider play. Two bands that met at a perfect time. Brilliant.
Ronnie reckoned it was the fastest he'd ever had to sing.
And vice versa as ronnie takes off
Anyone watching this in 2024. RIP Shane McGowan
Still here for the good vibes! RIP nigga.
Aww I like him he's a hoot
Shane deffo packed a lot of living into his 65 years
😢 best song
Shane MacGowan died last of November last year (2023-11-30) but at least he had fine teeth on that point. It was nowhere like this.
Turned a fine 29 years old.. god i miss my grandad from Donegal.. wish he was here so i could show him how much i loved the music 💚💚
ur grand pa hears u kid
Its crazy how many people come back to this everyday... this song is a masterpiece!
Everyday!
I just found it , reminds me of grandad born in dublin mvd 2 NZ 2 run a MUCK
Amen to that
I added it years ago and I still come back every once in a while, and I always want to think that billions of people listen to this all the time. Then I get confused when the numbers are all the same year after year. I believe we're being scammed.
I can’t get enough
I'll never tire of this. Everyone seemed to be having such a blast. In the middle of a party, a song broke out.
I remember the pogues at my father's 40th when I was 13. Beautiful time to be alive
As an Italian-American living in Germany this song makes me proud to be Irish.
Haha!
As a proud African-American living in China, this song makes me proud to be Irish.
As a New Zealand Māori this makes me proud to be Irish.
As Japanese jew living in Saudi Arabia, what are you all talking about!!!🤷♂️
😂
The very first Alcoholic Anonymous meeting live on TV
Your only getting away with that if your Irish and with Fagan I'm guessing you are and so 😄😆😅😂🤣
That only applies if alcohol ruined your life, not if it’s a part of your life.
😂🤔😂🤔😂
😂
Haha! Brilliant!
I keep revisiting this because I just love this performance, there are so many details I like. The fact that one of the lead singers is smoking and drinking at the start of the song, that one dude in the white sweater jamming out in the back, the guy with the piercings going crazy on the flute. No choreography whatsoever, everyone just doing their own thing, it's great.
The way their hands are in their pockets too haha
I do the exact same thing, it's the little things isnt it? Like the jamming out guy.
When you listen to this you automatically become Irish for at least 30 seconds.
R.I.P Shane McGowan, beautifully clear in voice for this performance.
Everyone wants to be Irish
@@igorstein5616 In the same way that we are all Palestinians, every man and woman who stands for freedom and solidarity is an Irishman.
Oh oh oh and anyone who has a problem with that statement has no right to be listening to this music. I said what I said.
Everyone has a bit of Irish in them, the menfolk get around
Musically talented men, that grew up in a different Ireland, most got the boat to England for work , started bands/ groups out of loneliness to pass those lonely evening, comforted by drink, they turned out to be musical geniuses , you gotta love the irish , god bless them all.
I am Latino and have zero ties to Ireland but this music resonates with me so much 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪

Eso no tiene nada que ver. Yo tampoco tengo un carajo que ver con Irlanda pero al que no le guste esta música no tiene alma.
There were irish sections in a Mexican Regiment but he bulk of the irish emigration towards non english speaking countries went almost exclusively to Argentina

R.I.P Shane MacGowan a true poet and Celtic Punk progenitor, he has his place in history with a rich legacy left behind.
Waiting at the bar while Shane paves the gate lol
Dubliners - the streamlined, grown classic version, Pogues - the authentic version, feels like a flashback into the 19th century directly into the harbour with all the sailors. Both great pieces of art.

RIP to Shane McGowan - A poet, a punk, a legend
RIP Shane a true legend to the simple life working class people of the world 🙏
😔☘💚
In my view, the working-class life is far from simple. But to your point, I agree that few singer-songwriters- back at the peak of the Pogues popularity and today- address issues important to the working class. Shane got it right. He spoke about us and to us in a way that never felt artificial or condescending. I’d happily trade a thousand Ed Sheerans for one more Shane MacGowan. Rest easy, mate. You earned it.
i love the progression of the dubliners playing that day: tolerance for a stunt into patience for shane's 'unique' singing voice, into surprise the pogues know the songs note for note and can play it as tight as they can, into shock shane knowing the song beat for beat blindfolded but choosing to sound like a hardcare band the last verse. 10/10.
Brings me back too being a child peeking around the corner to see the Irish singsong going on with my mum and dad and their friends ❤and my aunts and uncles. The best times 🇮🇪☘️🇨🇦
Drunk out of their mind, singing their heart out! Amazing!
As me I know some people in Germany in the 70th and 80th who loved to hear and play irish music. I have been in a concert with The Dubliners in this times ... full townhall with singing and dancing customers! LATER YEARS I too enjoyed The Pogues ... Like her style and a lot of songs ... still a bit sad about Shane Mc Gowan and his health ... I love his music and always "Dirty old town" and "Fairytale of New York" is going so deep in my heart ... Looking forward to hear more from both so different Groups with good irish music ! 🎸🎺🎻🪕🥁
