"Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan (born 25 December 1957) is an English-born Irish singer, songwriter, and musician. He is best known as the lead singer and songwriter of Celtic punk band the Pogues. He was also a member of the Nipple Erectors and Shane MacGowan and the Popes, as well as producing his own solo material and working on collaborations with artists such as Kirsty MacColl, Joe Strummer, Nick Cave, Steve Earle, Sinéad O'Connor, and Ronnie Drew."

My mates' band was supporting him in Nottingham about 20 years ago. He went missing so they had all his staff go looking for him in all the pubs in the vicinity. They found him in one slumped having drunk the bar dry. They carried him up onstage and he did a flawless 2 hr set. Straight after the last song, he slumped again and his people carried him off. Legend!
I truly doubt that it was flawless. Unless you consider drunken slobbering to be flawless slobbering.

One of my favorites.
Dirty Old Town was actually written by Ewan MacColl (spelling?) but it's fair to say Shane made it his own.

I had the privilege of seeing Shane and the Pogues twice. Once Shane forgot the words to a song. It didn't matter because we were all singing the lyrics and Shane remembered.
2 best concerts ever
I seen them three times but it was a different singer every time; once with Shane (couldn't understand a word so it was awesome), once with Joe Strummer, and once with Spider.
I’m so happy I saw the him and The Pogues in the early 80’s. My husband and I were huge fans. Shane was so young then. He was so gifted.
I saw the Pogues twice, once in about 1984 in Liverpool at the student union, once in about ‘86 in Montpellier, France. Shane had to go off stage at the second gig. Didn’t make any difference, it was kind of accepted he would do that. Always been a favourite band ❤
I saw them twice with a friend, as witness, 2 ticket stubs and 2 T-shirts, and I can't remember anything of it.
I got to see them once and am so thankful for it! He was truly EVERYTHING! 💚

Came here after learning about Shane has left the stage, today. RIP, mate. Thanks for all the joy your music provided to me over the last decades, over and over again. And what a great summary about him in the video.
What a guy. One of my mates met him on a ferry a few years ago and they sat down and had a couple of drinks and a game of poker together. My mate says Shane was one of the most down to earth, lovable and friendly people he's ever met.

I have to say thank you because today is the first time I ever heard the song fairytale of New York. The lyrics describe my relationship to my ex-wife, and I say that even though I don't drink. We've been divorced now for several years, yet the song left me in tears. So thank you for that..
Y'know, since I've listened to the Pogues basically my whole life, I was never sure if it was offensive to say that the singer has a certain way of singing that was like a drunken Irish man... Met Shane twice in the 90s and had my picture taken with him by Victoria. He remembered me a few nights later at a concert. I love you Shane! So glad you finally married her!
In 1998 I went from Greece to Limerick in Ireland as part of a student exchange program to study for a year, and study I did not.
But I did listen to the Pogues, and I drank with the Irish, and when I hear that voice I will always remember. Best time of my life.

Let's give some love to Kirsty MacColl, who also made "Fairytale Of New York' so great. She was (is) one of my favourite singers and KITE is a severely underrated album. Her early death was both bizarre and tragic - and probably warrants a Qxir story all by itself.
I remember hearing about her death on a local alternative radio station in Sydney and the DJ seemed almost on the verge of tears (I was, too, come to think of it).
Not long afterwards, I saw Billy Bragg live in concert and he dedicated "A New England" to Kirsty.
I too remember hearing she'd been hit by a jetski in Mexico, it was a tragic event, she met Elvis down the chippy
I'm still angry that the boater who ran her over is still running free. I was already a bit of a fan of hers by the time I learned that she was on Fairytale of New York. That made the song just that much better, to me.
I think Shane truly loved Kristy MacColl, when she died he dove head first into the bottle and any drugs he could get a hold of, now he is literally disabled, but has a new set of teeth lol

Years and years ago, I remember reading an article/interview in FHM about Shane MacGowan. Some of the points I remember are:
He grew up on a farm in Tipperary with his grandparents, and his grandad used to give him a little alcohol each night. The grandad died by falling in to a threshing machine.
When about 5 years old, he remembers first being drunk when he spoke to the geese...and they spoke back.
On one occasion (whilst drunk and on speed) he painted himself head to foot in blue paint...because the Moaris told him to.
He liked macaroni cheese, because it could be eaten cold straight from the tin
Oh, and when eating bread it had to be brown, as it's good for you.

As a maple-blooded Canadian the most unsettling part of that wild life is the idea of mac & cheese being served in any kind of tin, with any opportunity to get cold. Have the Irish never heard of Kraft Dinner?

That must really mean something if you are saying the Finns are bigger partiers then the Brits or the Irish! I am an American, and it was hysterical when I visited with my friends in England for the first time because they told me they spent £70 on alcohol for the week that I was staying there, but they hardly had any food in the house, so I was drunk off my rocker or hung over for the entire stay, and I hardly got to see anything of England outside of their apartment for that week LOL.
I do remember going to the local pub for one night with them though. Lmao.

Hey, just wanted to say thank you for helping me out with a school project. I didn't have any idea for a topic until I saw your video on that plane crash
EDIT: for those who want to know, it was the video about the tenerife airplane crash a few weeks back. I had to find 3 moments in the history of flight and make a PowerPoint on them, didn't matter how small or big, so I used Apollo 11, The first manned Hot Air Balloon, and when I was trying to come up with a third I just happened to be watching Qxir and RUclips autoplayed me into that video

Just stumbled across this video and brought back a lot of happy memories - fell in love with the pogues as a 16 year old about 87 and followed them all over - when they reformed managed to get to dozens of gigs again - one of the greatest songwriters to have walked the earth in my opinion. Thanks for the video

I had never heard of the Pogues before you posted this video, but I don't think I have went more than a few week period without listening to them since I first watched this. Thanks for giving this mcdonald's brain a touch of culture.
The Pogues were one of my favorite bands growing up. I missed a chance to see them in 87 man do I regret that. Shane is Legend.
I’m from Costa Rica 🇨🇷 and “Rum Sodomy & the Lash” is to this day my favorite album ever. I fell in Love with Shane’s passion for music. Even if he’s not a great singer he’s an excellent artist. It’s all about the passion.
15 years ago i was sailing a vessel from the Azores to Nprway alone. Because of weather i sailed to Sherkin island to waith for better winds. I ended up in a stag parthy. Bunch of people from some sailboats. It turned out to be some of the best Irish folk musicians incl 3 member of the Pogues. I never forget that night. I sailed oround the world for 6 years. My best memories are from Ireland, the Irish people!

I love Shane....hate his alcoholism. I am Canadian and was in a punk band in the late 80's/ early 90's and I would sing "Haul away Joe". It was always an audience favorite but it helped us because it gave our guitarists enough time to change a broken string!

I've seen the Pogues live twice and the song for the first dance when I got married in December was Fairytale of Newyork. Shane was absolutely shit faced both times on stage but he could still perform. It was standing which he struggled with. I absolutely love the Pogues and Shane. He's lived his life and burnt the candle at both ends but I bet he regrets nothing.

It's remarkable that he's lived this long with a hard-core alcohol addiction. Most of them die in their 40s and 50s from cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer or heart disease or pancreatitis and diabetes. Must've been tough on those closest to him all these years.

Thank you. I'm American and we've been known to get it in, myself included, but I've loved the Pogues for a long time now. McGowan is a a force to be reckoned with and good on him.

I was twenty-two years old back in 89 when I first heard this ban on MTV it was White City. I thought wow there's actually talent on MTV. This must be a flook. So I went out and bought all their albums and was never disappointed . Just wish I learned about them earlier. Thank you Shane Macgowan and all of the band mates for the most memorable music the world will ever know. Thank you.

I learned about The Pogues when “If I Should Fall From Grace With God” was used in a car commercial & have been in love with Shane’s work ever since.

Those weren't Irishmen. St. Patrick's Battalion was made up of defectors and deserters from the US Army. St. Patrick's Battalion also never fought in the Mexican War of Independence, they fought in the Mexican-American War that lasted from 1846-1848. The Mexican War of Independence ended in 1821.

However, the unit was made up primarily of European expats, Irishmen in particular, to such an extent that the people of several towns in Mexico have physical characteristics inherited from those that stayed.

Formed and led by John Riley, the battalion's members included many who had deserted or defected from the United States Army. The battalion served as an artillery unit for much of the war. I was born in the Americas,, which makes me an American. Same goes for most every member of St. Patrick's Battalion.
The Battalion's leader was Irish born, but he was a traitor to the British Crown and defected to the US. He then subsequently joined and deserted the US Army. He only defected to Mexico following a Court Martial that saw him branded as a traitor. His only allegiance to Mexico was his grudge against the US. He wasn't a hero, just a mercenary without morals or conviction.

I've got to say thank you for this video. Started listening to Shane and The Pouges when they first came out in early 80's. I've been a fan and follower of his ever since. We've all got our screwed up habits or issues, but Shane is a magnificent artist. From Fairytale of New York to he and Sinéad O'Connor with Haunted by the Ghost. Then the the stories of Ireland that only he could put to music. He's a legend and am always looking for anything he's put on paper. Thank you again for a tribute to this man.
The Pogues’ music (I’ve definitely heard of the band name before, but never heard their music until now) reminds me of the band named “Flogging Molly“ which was absolutely _HUGE_ in the underground indie scene here in the USA. I don’t know if they were actually Irish or not, and I’m too lazy to look it up right now because I have had some beers myself LOL. I do know that I had an absolute blast at their shows, swinging my beer mug around with the rest of the crowd in the early 2000s. Cheers! 🍻
The band was formed in the US, but Dave King, the singer and founder of the band was born and mostly raised in Ireland.
If you've never heard of Dave King before, check out the stuff he did with Fastaway in the 80's. They did a movie soundtrack for Trick or Treat that they released as an album, and it was great. The movie was a decent horror for the time too. Anyway, I "found" Flogging Molly and enjoyed them, but it was months before I realised I was listening to the same dude.
@@trelard Yes, he was a hair metal guy before Flogging Molly. I think FM were great live, but they just dont sound authentic on the albums Ive heard. Like they are reaching too hard. Definately and obviously Pogues inspired.

That is correct, you could go as far as saying that The Pogues are the origin of Irish Punk. As far as combining traditional Irish music and punk, nobody has done it better.
