For those of you wondering, Todd is still a tester there as of April 2022. His intro and course is still the exact same (with a few minor changes). He’s a bit of an older guy and he’s so nice. He will pass you as long as you can get your car in the parking spots, do most of your turns correctly, and don’t have a “catastrophic” mess up when parking etc. The Arden Hills DMV is short staffed and he’s still there so your chances of getting him are higher than they theoretically would be normally. I would highly recommend watching this at least a dozen times to memorize his course.

I got him today on my second try and I passed!!! 😭😭😭 he’s so awesome. After watching this video so many times, I had his voice memorized and when I got him I couldn’t believe it.
TIPS if you’re taking your test
    1. Go slow and take your time. You will have then plenty of time and space to switch lanes if needed.
2.Exaggerate when you observe. Observation is the number one thing they are looking for at Arden Hills.
    3. You have plenty of space for 90 degree and parallel parking so you’ll be fine! Don’t forget to signal when you’re about to park
    4. Watch this video as much as you can so you know exactly what to expect. So helpful!
    Good luck everyone.

So I just passed my first time at Arden!!!! Watching this video a couple times definitely helped.
    What I did good:
    -perfect parallel
    -good 90 backing
    -good speed (20-25mph)
-good observation (looking when crossing intersections and lane changing)
-use turn signals everywhere!! Even when turning out of parallel and 90 backing.
    What I messed up on:
-try to make sure you stay in the unmarked lanes correctly. The roads all seem to have faded lines so even the yellow line separating traffic is hard to see. The roads are all 4 lane, so make sure you’re not driving in the center of the road.
-when you turn into the one way road with the turning signs, make sure you turn into the FIRST lane of whatever side you come from. The second lane if there is a car parked in the first.
You got it !! I was so nervous, but I still passed. I even watched a girl that went before me who failed parallel, like she couldn’t even get in, I don’t know how the rest went, but she passed too!! You don’t need to be perfect in everything to pass !

Took my test here yesterday (5/21/21) and passed first time (it was raining hard too). I been practicing on and off and just really focus on practicing the last 2 days before my test for 1 hour each day on the parallel and reverse parking. I got the same examiner like in the video. I feel like this examiner likes to give you second chances IMHO. I was really nervous and made a lot of mistakes, but still passed. On the parallel and reverse parking, as long as you don't hit the pole(s), then you'll be fine no matter how many maneuver you have to do to get your car in (I hit the curb like 4 times while maneuver for the parallel). Due to COVID, there is no car equipment check. You go straight to driving after the examiner explains the rules for the test. DRIVE SLOW, 14 to 20 MPH should be good enough even though the speed limit is 30 MPH. My test was less than 8 minutes (appointment was at 8AM and done by 8:07:something seconds, yes I timed it lol) because I kept going over 20 MPH and I made a lot of bad mistakes because of that (barely enough time to lane changes, went over center line when turning, and etc.). Observation is IMPORTANT! Always look left and right every time you come to an intersection, ALWAYS. Look at mirrors and over shoulder each lane change. Same for parking. If you are taking the test here, it's not as bad as people make it out to be, it is not. You can do it!

Just took my test here recently and I passed on my first try! Watching these videos definitely help you be more familiar with the course. I was so nervous but my advice is try your best to stay calm and confident! Do what you have been doing normally when practicing!
Many tips in the comments really DO help so read them. Here are some of mine:
    - Don’t let your nerves get to the best of you! On the day of your test, clear your mind with good music, meditate, or whatever makes you feel calm! I spent my morning listening to positive affirmations to release most of my anxiety. Here is one that really helped: “I have all the knowledge within me to succeed”!
    - During the test, take your time and don’t rush. It’ll help you do best. At the beginning of the exam, I asked the instructor who informed me that the recommended speed is 12-15 mph.
    - Practice your parkings! As long as you understand your wheel and know how to steer it to make you enter the parking spot and not hit the poles, you’ll be fine. I hit the curb on parallel but still passed.
    - Be aware of the one way, and enter/exit in the correct lane.
    Hope this helps!

Passed my test today here first try . shi I can say to much stress outta ma head
    Tips
    - y’all need to move yo heads 24/7 even when turning right from right
    - Know the mechanics of the pakings. U will do fine if u watched the videos how to 90° and parallel SIGNAL when getting out. and I’m sure y’all know how to uphill/downhill . For the uphill park I went over the curb to have enough space, I don’t think they care if u over the curb.
    - U and the examiner need to be in a positive vibe, so keep it 💯
    - Signal every time u change lane and turn.
    - And lastly turn yo neck left/right, over the shoulder, every time in intersection
    - I think looking around is the most important thing to them then the parkings
    - The test wasn’t even that much long as the videos. Mine was like 8-10 min. It was super quick.

One important thing everbody should know is that, parking is difficult, but if you do not hit the cone, everything will be fine. Observation, give signal, correct lane, and stop at the correct points, those are the most important points.

She didn’t ask me anything about the cars functions even though they are usually required to do so when it’s your first time taking the road test. She failed me after 3 minutes, failed the guy before me after 3-5 minutes, and failed the guy after me after 3 mins. She told me I failed because i didn’t park close enough to the curb for down hill park and my left turns were too wide. My dad watched me the entire time and said that my turns were good and he is brutally honest. I didn’t get a chance to do parallel parking or 90 back up. When arriving At the uncontrolled intersection slowdown A BLOCK A HEAD and look left and right while you’re slowing down but DO NOT STOP UNLESS there is another car that arrives at the same time as you, if that happens then treat it as a stop sign and figure out who’s going to go first, people TURING RIGHT has the right of way so YOU have to wait. And remember up-up and away for your hill parking. If you FAIL your parallel and do the 90 degree back perfectly YOU’LL STILL PASS maybe.

Proceed at 15-25mph on the road test.
Make sure to observe the signs and understand them. Stop, one way, 2-way, yield.
Also, proceed at every intersection with caution and you always have to look both ways even if you have the right of way or are going straight.
7:16 Good full stop. But since it's not an all way stop, you should creep up a little more slowly to see both ways then proceed. Crucial to have your instructor see you do this
8:00 Make sure to look right and left before turning left since you have to yield to oncoming cars. Again, observe.
8:38 Parallel Park. Use the S technique
    11:18 Again, yield sign. Observe
    12:01 Observe sign. "One way"
12:32 Seruous mistake made here. Should stay on the lane you're turning on
14:52 *Reminder to self: signal before parking and signal out of the uphill park*
Uphill park: turn wheels away from the curb; to the left, all the way and step on emergency brakes all the way.
Downhill park: turn wheels all the way to the right.
Tips: when ask to pull in to a spot to park in, always signal before
Test will cover 90° backing and Parallel park and straight in parking

Nothing indicates this is a one way street, or a two way street, there are also no lines on the road. When I turned left, I kept to my right and the instructor argued I should’ve kept to my left. In this video, it seems like he didn’t do that. Maybe drove down the middle of the road? Any suggestions would help! Thanks

The biggest pet peeve I have is, instructors having different sides and beliefs then other instructors. I've taken my road test 5 times now. This was my 5th attempt and first time being at Arden Hills. I failed yet again. Don't let this video trick you into thinking it's easy, and the instructors being too nice. I had a nice guy but he broke tradition that most instructors work by. That is instructors should always and only speak when it is about directions, and emergency situations. The guy I had would speak at every moment I had made a mistake on. Making me in return feel more anxious and cause a bit of a distraction. Which had been a reason to why I failed. When I was told at mark 12:20 in video to turn left, I got into that 2nd left lane furthest from the curb - just as the boy did. At mark 12:36 - Instead of turning into the closest lane like the boy did in the video, I followed the correct path and turned into the furthest lane towards the right. Then this is where I got messed up - I was told left turn again, well.. I didn't merge and turned left from a right lane, so that was an immediate fail. Causes can be against many things. 1. The Instructor caused distraction by constant voice over mistakes - while I'm still driving - Things like that can be explained AFTER I'm done with the test. 2. Now while it should be clear as day to easily understand what lane to get into when making a left turn from a 2 lane into a 1 lane. I consider this to be a "TRAP" - if one was to be confused and took the same path I did. The two lanes should be marked with arrows dedicated to there specific direction. The fact I was in the right turn lane, should have been marked with a right turn arrow. Same with the left lane, left turn arrow. It's a mistake that I learned from and will know to fix next time. If anything like what I dealt with, the boy in this video should have failed because he turned into the closest lane from the wrong lane to begin with - There could have been a car and he could have cut that car off, while getting into an accident. Should have kept on the path to the furthest lane and then merge. This instructor got too gullible and left off with "exemptions" that should not be awarded like it's an actual lesson they were taught to hand out in there training. This instructor has given this boy privilege to actually drive and with his mistake could have easily cause him an accident in the near future. Best thing to learn is take multiple deep breaths and just focus. Lots of people say to practice, practice and practice. As practice maybe helpful to some, mistakes are better learned by others. Testing the course out first hand has given me that knowledge as to what I'm going to be dealing again later on. The visualization as to how I drove and what mistakes I made, will now be corrected next time. That is if the instructor approves..

Emma Brust Yes I did, and it was definitely an experience to learn from. Got it rescheduled in September. I will most definitely think back to this day and learn every bit of it, to in return fix every mistake made. Hopefully..

I'll come back to report how it went.

      I GOT MY LICENSE!!!!
I PASSED ON THE FIRST TRY!
My examiner was a woman, and I thought she was going to be mean, but she was so nice.
She talked to me a tiny bit, which helped.
      She told me to breathe.
      I am SOOOO HAPPY!!!
      You can do it!
Practice parallel parking with 22ft between cones, and you'll be able to do theirs no problem!

If you are scheduling your test in the pandemic try to schedule it between 8 and 3:45 as the building closes at 4:00 so if you take it and pass you have to go back to the DMV the next day to get it. I took mine late in the day on the 26th and now I have to go back on the following day.

I was just to nervous 😬 I made some small mistakes. But even with those I would have passed. It’s the big mistake that led me to fail. I was doing good, I looked both ways and I had the right away. Then these 3 cars (the parents were driving them) that should have stopped at the stop sign but didn’t, zoomed past me. My instructor screamed “STTOOPPPP”. Right then and there I knew I failed.

Wearing a mask doesn’t make it harder, but if you need to breathe fresh air, feel free to put down the windows. I don’t think the examiners would mind that. It overall depends on the examiner if they’re going to be lenient to you or not based on how you do on your road test. I hope this explains everything.
