i guess this will blow your mind then...wasnt an encore persay.. but it was the end of the second set of the day of that festival.... they had already played the full set a few hours earlier.. .. ...regardless of what every one believes and what is fact..we can all agree geoff was a vocal beast of 5 octaves and no other male vocalist of the times could touch him...
I personally think he was the very best in the business at that time. He should have been called Mr. Control, he also has the ability to tell a story in a song, the best Geoff Tate
Chris said in a 1991 interview the song was written about people who have missed opportunities in life. Geoff's voice is insane. I only got to see them live once, but their performance of Eyes of a Stranger left me speechless. I just sat there quietly in awe of what I had just experienced.
Geoff Tarte's vocal coach was the late Maestro David P. Kyle of Seattle who also coached Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, and Ann Wilson of Heart. And now you know the rest of the story!
LOL he had some lessons and geoff even talks about the fact everyone states he trained long term with him... for some reason this little known fact goes unnoticed is that his grandmother also trained him and she was a classically trained opera singer also... he went to pyle for some finishing and smoothing of his technique... it is weird where everyone gets their info yet he is in tons of interviews talking all about it...i guess it is the fact they want to link local legends with another local legend.. shrugs
One of the best live bands of all time! Saw them during the Empire tour. They did the whole Operation Mind Crime album and all of Empire. Plus many other hits. Well over 2 hours of live perfection. They were the band of the 80's and 90's and into the 2000's.
I was blessed to see the Empire/Mindcrime tour twice, and to see them perform Mindcrime in its entirety 2 more times, the last time in a small theater in Portland OR with Pamela Moore, and they performed it In character with other actors, it was absolutely epic!!! Those were without doubt of the literally hundreds and hundreds of concerts I have seen, with all the greats, the very, very best. Operation Mindcrime is my favorite album of all time.
I have listened to this man for 35 years, since I was 12. My musical tastes have evolved so much, but Queensryche is still a daily constant for me. Geoff still sounds amazing live. He's 64 years old and he still gives me chills.
Tate is a once in a lifetime talent; one of if not arguably the best metal/rock vocalist. Dio, Halford, Gillan and Dickinson are among my faves but Geoff is next fking level.
Great of you to put Ian in with RJ, Rob, and Bruce. For some reason he doesn't get much of the respect he's due from a lot of the classic hard rock/metal fans. I see you are a man of culture as well. Further, I would add Coverdale and Rogers to that group when listing mine. Oh, and Plant is on his own damned planet, but it's a completely different one from the one Tate owns because they are radically different vocalists.
Geoff is almost too over the top, like he finds the absolute edge of perfection meets absurdity in rock/metal vocalization, the notes he hits are ridiculous, so damn good!
Queensryche has been one of my favorites since the 80s. You should definitely check out more of their work, Geoff has an amazing voice and they were incorporating much more intricate bass lines and instrumental lines before most others.
His range and control is super human. For a baritone to comfortably sing in the upper register and drop back down to the lower silky voice is crazy. This performance is at the END of a full show. Incredible.
Discovered Queensryche when The Warning was released. Have seen them maybe a dozen times over the years. Geoff was just an incredible voice of the era.
Geoff has to be one of the all time greats! And this band, in its original lineup, was a powerhouse! They're fragmented a bit now, but individually, still great!
There are many videos of people trying to sing this song as Geoff did . Some are close. But not of them are moving on a stage. They are all standing in front of the mike. There are many videos of Geoff singing this live exactly as in this classic clip. I am still waiting to see someone hitting the high notes wuth such energy and control after a whole set. This song is metal excellence. The very definition of art.
My favorite album of all time. Saw them perform it in it’s entirety 4 times, the last time in a small theater in Portland OR with Pamela Moore, it was epic!!!
yes Operation Mindcrime/Operation Livecrime is a must listen to from start to finish, no skipping. because of the concept of the album, it tells a story from first note to the last in order. it is a feast for the ears that no other band has yet to copy!
I really love it when respected vocal coaches discover Queensryche. "Metal" tends to get dismissed to the sidelines but there are many subgenres. For a change of pace, please react to: Queensryche Unplugged Live - "I Will Remember". You'll see that this man can sing anything.
This is probably one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard and saw Queensryche many times with Geoff Tate, as well as recent shows since he's gone solo, and he continues to impress. Glad you finally gave this one a listen.
There version of Scarborough Fair is one of my favorite vocal performances by him. Not sure if there is a live version out there but on the studio version, he hits a register i the 3rd verse that is amazing. I saw Queensryche on this tour back in 84 and they were amazing.
I still listen to mindcrime all the time. It’s my go to for 80s nostalgia. You have to listen to the entire album start to finish to really appreciate it.
Most underrated band of all time!!!! I've been listening to these guys since the 80s and still appreciate and love their music. There is absolutely no other band that I can say that about. It's a shame that more people didn't tap into this band.
If you really want to be amazed by the notes Geoff can hit, “The lady wore black”, and “Queen of the Reich “ are absolute musts!! Geoff was untouchable in the 80’s and early 90’s. One of the best bands of that era without any doubt!
Absolutely love both songs! Queen of the Reich is what made me an instant and forever fan of the original lineup. They are one of the best bands of that era and any other, as far as I'm concerned.
Geoff is a incredible singer one of my inspirations as a singer between him and midnight from crimson glory a east coast metal band they helped me to develop my vocal style also this was the next to last song of the show
Hi Maggie! Thank you for reacting and explaining whats all involved with the whole voice training. You make it fun to learn! So glad you did Queensryche-one of my favorites! ❤
Never forgrt- 14 years later and I still love Queensryche for kicking complete Arse Live and caring enough to come to a combat zone (Joint Base Balad, Iraq) and remind us of home and those we're fighting for and love--Thank you so much!
I was blown away when I heard their ep in 1983 through my neighbor's 12 D battery ghetto blaster. Saw them the following year open up for Iron Maiden. My first real concert, and still one of the best.
Geoff is ELVIS! QUEENSRYCHE is one of the very best bands you will ever hear. Geoff is a badass singer! Saw them in concert 21 times from their first tour on up! Excellent, super clean, live band. Always delivered big time! Operation Mindcrime is a concept album masterpiece that you have to listen to completely uninterrupted, start to finish like you watch a really good movie, because that’s what it is, only audibly. Set aside some time by yourself to do it right. Have the lyrics in front of you so you can follow the story. It’s recognized as one of the greatest concept albums of all time. Probably second only to PINK FLOYD’S The Wall record.
You can't get enough of Queensryche on your Channel. No doubt. So how could I not agree to re-post your reaction Video to Queensryche again. . . . . . . and again... . . . .and again... . . . . Very cool! Luv ya dear Maggie 🥰🥰🥰
Stop already so surreal I had this song one of my favorites from warning playing in my car on cassette while driving around campus as a freshman in college and back then simply couldn't believe what I was hearing. Now looking back I know most people knew little about warning. I can't imagine a better review of little known song here. Thanks for sharing your expertise
This song was the first song/video I heard from them back in 84-85. It worked, I'm a life long fan. The 1988 album Operation MindCrime is an absolute masterpiece. Talk about a band working together.
This was the last or next to last song of the concert too. Chris DeGarmo never gets enough credit for his vocals backing Geoff. For a different spectrum of Geoff's voice, you need to listen to Silent Lucidity.
Lovely - I’m hoping you enjoy the neighborhood. I lived 1 street north of Lincoln Center / their nearly 20 years! What a truly wonderful place for young, aspiring artists to make make their mark ❤️😊
Of course the commercial songs like Silent Lucidity are really really good. You’ll fall in love with his voice. The deep cuts in a where he amazes. The Mindcrime album is just… do the whole thing. Concept album. Incredible music and vocals, the whole album.
I remember in an interview Geoff made a comment about another interview he did after Silent Lucidity broke big. The guy doing the interview basically had little or knowledge of the band, he asked them why they did such a "concept album" like Empire. His reply was that it was the "least concept album" they had done.
Hi, Maggie :) Just found this video. Geoff is great; it's too bad that they felt they had to kick him out. Two songs that really show off his range: "I Will Remember from Rage for Order and " Suite: Sister Mary" from Operation: Mindcrime".
Keep in mind, I'm pretty sure this performance was near or at the end of their set. So Tate had already been singing and the boys had already been crankin' it for quite a while when they did this song!
Take hold of the flame is about not being like those who have let life's opportunities pass them by. Rather seize those opportunities. Take that flame and shine. You have nothing to lose by seizing opportunity. But you have everything to gain.
Queensryche will always be one of my favorite metal bands. Their abilities as a band only grew with each album and reached a perfection not many have obtained. But sadly they reached a point where they were unable to agree on where to take the band after huge success and they fell apart. I guess that happens with most bands, especially with great success
I grew up here in Seattle listening to them I know Geoff was a student of David Kyle and that he was a very dedicated student ok Kyle he had really trained hard & took it very serious thanks for reacting to them
If I had to guess, I would say that when he "separated" that high note he actually took a quick breath so that he would have enough air to sustain the note the way he wanted.
And the fact that Chris DeGarmo is actually harmonizing with him is pretty insane.
Geoff and DeGarmo had an incredible chemistry
The amazing thing about this performance is it’s an encore!!!!! He was able to sing at this level after a full concert!!!!! Unreal
i guess this will blow your mind then...wasnt an encore persay.. but it was the end of the second set of the day of that festival.... they had already played the full set a few hours earlier.. .. ...regardless of what every one believes and what is fact..we can all agree geoff was a vocal beast of 5 octaves and no other male vocalist of the times could touch him...
That's amazing knowing that!!!!

Geoff's voice is insane. I only got to see them live once, but their performance of Eyes of a Stranger left me speechless. I just sat there quietly in awe of what I had just experienced.
Some people say its the most perfect E5 ever shaped and sung....live. Geoff is a rare breed of a true singer that ive ever heard. Legend.
Geoff Tarte's vocal coach was the late Maestro David P. Kyle of Seattle who also coached Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, and Ann Wilson of Heart. And now you know the rest of the story!
Master David....good lord....what a group of vocalists to have trained
Thank you Paul Harvey
Add. Late Chris Cornell, RIP.
LOL he had some lessons and geoff even talks about the fact everyone states he trained long term with him... for some reason this little known fact goes unnoticed is that his grandmother also trained him and she was a classically trained opera singer also... he went to pyle for some finishing and smoothing of his technique... it is weird where everyone gets their info yet he is in tons of interviews talking all about it...i guess it is the fact they want to link local legends with another local legend.. shrugs
did not know that, very cool, thanks!
So far, I haven't seen anyone point out that Tate is NOT a tenor, but mainly a baritone! He hit the E5 with perfect pitch! Stunning!
Geoff's ability to stay in tune is crazy and this is way before in ears. So he's got the reverb of the band and his voice coming back at him.
His overtone on that high note after the solo is like a crystal
This band deserves a deep dive. Their first 5 albums are all fantastic.
One of the best live bands of all time! Saw them during the Empire tour. They did the whole Operation Mind Crime album and all of Empire. Plus many other hits. Well over 2 hours of live perfection. They were the band of the 80's and 90's and into the 2000's.
Did Geoff hit the layup In basketball for “Best I Can?”
Definitely one of the best live bands
I was lucky enough to see them @ Day on the green. Faith no more, Soundgarden, Queensryche, and Metallica it was the best concert(s) I ever went to.
same hear,Mind Crime tour was awesome
I was blessed to see the Empire/Mindcrime tour twice, and to see them perform Mindcrime in its entirety 2 more times, the last time in a small theater in Portland OR with Pamela Moore, and they performed it In character with other actors, it was absolutely epic!!! Agreed, I love Bruce and others, but Geoff stands alone. He just does.
Queensryche has been one of my favorites since the 80s. You should definitely check out more of their work, Geoff has an amazing voice and they were incorporating much more intricate bass lines and instrumental lines before most others.

Shout out to DeGarmo for those backing harmonies!
Geoff in his prime was/ remains unmatched!
Saw them live many times back in the day, unreal! Love Queensryche, ahead or their time~
They were so great live.
Mindcrime is their masterpiece. Best concert ever.
Discovered Queensryche when The Warning was released. Have seen them maybe a dozen times over the years. Geoff was just an incredible voice of the era.
Crazy I've actually heard his voice called an operatic growl in an interview
Geoff Tate never fails to give me chills, but I feel like everybody sleeps on Chris DeGarmo harmonizing with a lot of this, too.
Yeah DeGarmo is super talented, and compliments Geoff so well.
what would be cool is if someone reacted to the one song Chris sang lead vocals on....I believe its called All I want.
@Stephen Petrovich Would love to see that to.
Geoff has to be one of the all time greats! And this band, in its original lineup, was a powerhouse! They're fragmented a bit now, but individually, still great!
I saw Queensryche in concert in the early 90's ...THEY ARE AMAZING!! Geoff is one the best rock vocalist! one of my all time FAVS.

You need to listen to the entire "Operation Mindcrime" concept album. Queensryche and Geoff Tate at their absolute best!
the Operation Livecrime DVD/Concert is an absolute must
My favorite album of all time. Saw them perform it in it’s entirety 4 times, the last time in a small theater in Portland OR with Pamela Moore, it was epic!!!

Absolutely agree! The entire story is unparalleled.
Eyes of a stranger is another good one
Queensryche is just an amazing band. So much fantastic music.
You now have discovered probably the best metal song ever performed on the planet to this date. Nice review.
Queensryche is a band in a league of their own they just that good check out killing words I will remember both on Mtv unplugged is anybody listening?
You have got to do the Suite Sister Mary song by Queensryche. The video is fantastic and also Geoffs female counterpart is GREAT!!!

Queensryche with this formation were great live, watched them twice ... incredible band live. 😎
Better range and power than any other lead singer I've ever heard, amazing vocals. Just stellar.
I'm so glad that I saw them live in the mid-80's several times. That line-up was amazing and Geoff was incredible!

That's the tragedy that the band was so good together, then gradually fell part. DeGarmo and Tate were magic.
Chris is flying planes now
This live performance does a good job of showcasing Geoff Tate's vocal ability.
Hi Maggie! Thank you for reacting and explaining whats all involved with the whole voice training. You make it fun to learn! So glad you did Queensryche-one of my favorites! ❤
he has his own voice for sure.
Watch this entire concert here on RUclips. I discovered them after Rage for Order was released. Been a huge fan since.
Their drummer, Scott, never gets the credit he deserves. He is an amazing drummer.
Final song and no auto tune, the best in the business at that time, full control in every level

It means take a chance, don't let anyone hold you back, take hold of that flame and excel, fly, as rocky would say go for it.
Take hold of the flame is about not being like those who have let life's opportunities pass them by. Rather seize those opportunities. Take that flame and shine. You have nothing to lose by seizing opportunity. But you have everything to gain.
