Take Hold of the Flame Live in Tokyo is perhaps one of the most reviewed songs from vocal experts!!!:..due to the fact that Geoff Tate gets to notes that are practically impossible for a man. Check the song from this same concert...is amazing! The whole band is just perfect.
but he actually does more difficult things vocally on this track and he regularly hits f5 as opposed to "only" e5 on Take Hold. Take Hold is featured simply for viral reasons...and maybe because he starts quiet before surprising the first time listener. It's not super rare for many tenors and even baritones to hit these notes. The reason we are instictively blown away by what Geoff does is the power and warmth he hits those notes with...as well as the consistent power he commands throughout his range, the sincere emotion he conveys, and the amazing presence he does it with live in these early shows.
I don't know where you are or if you would be able to go, but both Queensryche and Geoff Tate are doing US tours this year. My friend and I are at least going to see Geoff Tate. I turned her on to him and now she's obsessed, too. lol Seriously though, he is one of the greatest singers/performers of all time. His US tour is going to be the best of Operation: Mindcrime and The Warning.
Queensryche are the godfathers of progressive metal. They've influenced l progressive metal bands with their intensity and precision live music. Seen them completely blow Metallica off the stage musically. True talent shines.
According to Mike Portnoy, Queensryche and Fates Warning are some of the strongest influences that they had back in the days when they were just in the starting point. Queen of the Ryche, The Warning, Rage for Order and of course their most epic and concept album, Operation Mindcrime that is perhaps and considered on the best concept albums in Metal.
Need to check out their concept albums, Operation Mindcrime, a story from first song to last. Empire was their move to more mainstream. They are at the top of prog. Metal with Dream theatre like metallica is for thrash.
"Operation Mindcrime" is a masterpiece !! Geoff Tate is the "GOAT" of Metal & Rock PERIOD DOT!!. The man is still doing his thing. He makes AMAZING WINE, has special events where he basically kicks it with his fans for a week or so touring different sites. Here's the BIG ONE.................he still has those GOLDEN PIPES !! He has taken care of his craft/voice unlike other vocalists. Queensryche really didn't become popular until they toned it down with "Empire". They won MTV's "People's Choice Award" for "Silent Lucidity" , which is a much slower song, but Geoff's voice shines just as much.
Man this is one of my favorite bands of the '80s!!! If you like this one, you really need to check out Queensryche -Take Hold of the Flame Live in Tokyo. Geoff's vocals are amazing and he hits every note perfectly.
It wasn't my first show, but it was the greatest concert I have ever gotten to go to. I was in Dayton, Ohio in 91' for their Building Empires tour and got to see Operation: Mindcrime in its entirety.
Yes! Queensryche! Love love them they truly are underrated! You godda do take hold of the flame from this show:) I hope you go down the rabbit hole! The Operation mind crime album is 🔥. BTW loved all the tool reactions so cool watching you become a fan😊
Thanks for reviewing this. Hopefully all of the "Ryche-heads" find your channel. You are correct that they are one of the pioneers of Prog Metal. It's probably not feasible to review an entire album, but their concept album "Operation Mindcrime" is worth a listen. It's about a heroin addict "Nikki" who gets manipulated and brainwashed (MK Ultra style) into becoming an assassin--The word "mindcrime" is his trigger word. He befriends a nun, Sister Mary, and falls in love with her. His handler (Dr. X) becomes suspicious of Sister Mary and orders him to kill her. He is unable to complete the order, but Mary winds up dead anyway. He wakes up in a mental hospital unable to recognize himself in the mirror. Its truly epic.
It truly is, and seeing it live in 91' was beyond words. It's the best concert I've ever gotten to see. Queensryche and Geoff Tate are both touring the US this year. Tate is doing the best of Operation: Mindcrime and The Warning.
01-23-1984 Ector County coliseum, Odessa, TX. I remember the date because it was my 15th birthday. They opened for Riot and KISS! Been a fan since. And then Operation: Mindcrime came out. Keep an mp3 copy on every phone I get.
Queensryche was one of the earliest "Progressive Metal" and were definitely an influence on the prog metal bands that followed, Queensryche, Fates Warning and Dream Theater are often called the Holy Trinity of Prog Metal!
I'm glad you reacted to this song, most others react to Take Hold of the Flame, which is a phenomenal song, however, I think this song deserves more attention. The same can be said for Child of Fire on that was part of this concert as well.
Both Queensryche and Geoff Tate are touring the US this year and I'm at least going to see Tate. He is, to me at least, one of the greatest vocalists of all time. He's doing the best of Operation: Mindcrime and The Warning. I can't wait. The Building Empires tour in 91' was the greatest concert I have ever gone to. I got to see Operation: Mindcrime in its entirety and there aren't enough words to describe that experience.
Just saw Geoff with his amazing band in March of this year. “Queen of the Reich” is the “One Song” everyone expects to hear as the finale. No one sings it like Geoff and the anticipation of knowing he will sing it, generates a raw energy from the crowd and has everyone at the very edge of their seats letting that joy out when he hits that opening note after the intro. Just a freaking…. “H*LL YEAH!!!!!!”
Queensrych live was ALWAYS better than their studio versions which were kicking. Probably the best concept album ever operation Mindcrime by these guys but you need to listen to the album or watch the tour on RUclips to get a real appreciation for the album Great reaction and yes they were one of the big ones in the prog rock scene
One of my favorite bands. The only good thing about my first marriage was that my ex introduced me to their music. Geoff Tate is actually a baritone and his voice is beautiful in his natural register as well.
I agree...TAKE HOLD OF THE FLAME needs to be checked out . FLAWLESS...and this was live! Saw them live in the early 80's and words cannot express the ultimate experience of witnessing this band LIVE!
They really can't. It was the greatest concert I have ever gone to. They truly were flawless and their stage show was really watching the story of Operation: Mindcrime unfold live. I saw them in 91' on their Building Empires tour.
He’s a vocal beast, for sure. And yes, they are one of the OG Progressive Metal bands, especially after this album. This is fairly metal/hard rock, but they quickly veered into the Progressive genre for many albums to come. One of his most amazing vocal performances is “Roads to Madness” from ‘The Warning”, and most of the songs from “Rage for Order”, like “I Dream in Infrared” or “London”, or almost anything from “Operation: Mindcrime” but it’s a concept album and should be listened to from beginning to end, or even the last of their best albums, IMHO, “Empire” - the title track or “Anybody Listening?”
YEA!! My favorite band of ALL TIME! (Original lineup) SO much to say about them. But not enough room here. Yes, they are considered one of the big three founders of Prog Metal. Not a "hair band" at all! Check out "Take Hold of the Flame" from same concert. The second E5 Geoff hits is the most beautiful note you'll ever hear! The entire band is ultra tight. I've seen them live many times throughout the 90's. BEST live performances I've ever seen! Look up their 1988, highly acclaimed, still relevant today, concept album, "Operation: Mindcrime". It's one long, brilliant story! This band delivers in songwriting, musicianship, lyrics, and VOCALS every time! Typically they write about deeper things, but they were just kids when they wrote this one. Geoff is actually a baritone. In their first two albums he sings quite a bit in his higher register. In subsequent albums he mixes in more of his lower range, which is rich and awesome! Love that you reacted to QR! Please dive in further! You won't regret it!
Man, his band is just horrible.I watched some stuff on yt and the only thing I could do was facepalming. He should dump them and hire some serious musicians now that he started to get his voice back.
You just earned a new subscriber!!! Yes they are known as one of the main 3 Progressive metal groups. I became their fan from the first song “Lady wore black “, and then “Queen of the Reich”. Geoff was untouchable as a vocalist in the 80’s and early 90’s. “Operation Mindcrime” IMO is the best album of all time. It is a rock opera, a story about society and revolution and is still completely relevant today. It must be listened to from beginning to end. I was blessed to see them perform it in it’s entirety 4x, the last time in a small theater in Portland OR with Pamela Moore. Every time I saw them in concert they were flawless. I had friends in the music industry in LA and was blessed to see hundreds and hundreds of concerts with all of the greats, many before they were discovered, and Queensryche was undoubtedly the best. I can’t wait to see you go down the rabbit hole with Queensryche!!!
I've only been to a handful of shows compared to you, but seeing them in 91' on their Building Empires tour was something I'll never forget. It is the greatest concert I've ever gotten to go to. I also got to see Operation: Mindcrime in its entirety. It truly is one of the greatest albums of all time and Geoff Tate is one of the greatest performers/singers of all time, as well. I'm just sitting here typing and thinking about how flawless the entire band was that night.
Check out all the songs from queensryche they're all pretty intense they have an album called operation mindcrime it's a concept album the whole album tells one story Jeff has a phenomenal voice check out more from them you won't be disappointed
When people tell you they are exceptional, they are underselling their quality. I saw them around the time of this video at the Spectrum in Pennsylvania, and I was completely transformed from a musical genre perspective. Geoff is such an amazing person to this day! I love seeing peeps out there in the ether learn about Queensryche. Check out Kamelot when Roy Khan was at the vocal helm, Darkwater with Henrik Bath on guitars and vocals, Circus Maximus from Norway, and Seventh Wonder, whose singer now sings for Kamelot. God bless!

I totally fell in love with Queensryche when they released this song "Queen of the Reich" as a single. I even bought tickets to see them live as a support band for Dio in 1984 where they had far better sound than Dio. Don't get me wrong I loved Dio as well. Then I went to Denmark in 1991 as they were one of the supporting bands to AC/DC. I think bands like Dream Theater have them as part of the influence.
Never forget! 14 years later and I still love Queensryche for kicking complete Arse Live and caring enough to come to a combat zone (Joint Base Balad, Iraq) and remind us of home and those we're fighting for and love--Thank you so much!
Holy smokes, a Symphony X fan, you are a man of taste and distinction. Yes ole Geoff here was a big influence on Russell Allen for SX, along with Dio, Ian Gillen of Deep Purple and Bruce Dickenson of Iron Maiden. Symphony X is tied with Dream Theater and Nightwish for the acts ive seen the most times live (8). Had the opportunity to buy a beer and shoot the breeze with Sir Russ for a half hour or so in 2012 on their tour supporting Iconoclast. I knew a couple of guys at the Midland theater in Kansas City and helped unload gear and stage equipment at the loading dock un exhange for early entry to the venue. Their bus and truck arrived a couple hours earlier than expected and the hospitality in the green/dressing rooms wasn't ready yet and the bands had time to kill before soundcheck, so I offered to take Russel and one member of the opening act down a block to the Flying Saucer taphouse. Was an awesome experience, sadly, the other guy that went with was Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth who became a big celebrity on January 6th, 2021 when him and his Oathkeeper buddies stormed the capital.
Queensryche has so many great songs...just a bunch of really good music videos with really high production quality. When you get into their late 80s early 90s all their stuff off of Empire and Operation Mindcrime the videos are just tremendous as to video and audio production.
Check out take hold of the flame live in Tokyo killing words and I will remember both on Mtv unplugged my opinion Geoff Tate is the greatest vocalist of all time queensryche was underrated
Tate may be top 15 or 20 vocalist all time but he is easily a top 5 metal vocalist right up there with Dio, Dickinson and Halford in no particular order
1 review of the 'Ryche and you have a new subscriber!! So many amazing ones to mention but try "someone else" from near the end of their journey as the original band.
They’re still out there creating new music and still a force to be reckoned with. The lineup has changed, but they’re still as tight as ever, and they found a capable replacement singer in Todd La Torre. They put out their most recent album back in October 2022, Digital Noise Alliance.
I highly, highly recommend their concept album, Operation Mindcrime. It is one of the best albums of all time and imo, the best concept/visual album of all time. I've also found a full copy of their Operation Livecrime concert. The story, drama, and theatrics are so, so worth the watch! Geoff Tate is really at his best live and performing on a stage. Geoff doesn't just sing a song, he performs it. This is a Rock Opera and it is FANTASTIC: Queensryche Operation LIVEcrime: ruclips.net/video/Moz_VkYv4Hc/видео.html
Will somebody please comment already on the most impressive part of this whole performance, last song of the set. Holyshit. I went to the store yes I'm not old and yes my grandkids love it
Love some symphony x!!! The sacrifice is one of my favs!!! Russell Allen has a great voice!! But you can tell they get a lot of influence from these guys.
Got here late...glad to see you dabbled in prog metal (Symphony X, Dream Theater, and these guys). The best of today is a German Band - Vanden Plas - who have taken the torch from a fading Dream Theater. Lead vocalist Andy Kuntz is more expressive than James LaBrie, and they've been together (with NO personnel changes) for 30 years. Take a peek at this video and judge for yourself - "Scarlet Flower Fields" (live): ruclips.net/video/8f8bZxErlfI/видео.html
Great reaction. These guys made one of greatest concept album Operation Mindcrime. Also another great video to react to is the one of Brittney Slayes the vocalist for Unleash The Archers singing this at a Karaoke bar in Edinburgh. ruclips.net/video/280DRqoGyLw/видео.html
Geoff Tate is on the top 3 in the history of hard Rock and metal male vocalist. Those who put out of the top 3 or Top 5 don't know ANYTHING ABOUT MUSIC.
love how you research the band and teach as you preach! just saw your review on slayer war ensemble which got me here! in regards to tates voice... this is LIVE!!! insane voice... seen him live 3 times and he never disappoints... too bad hes an ass hat... met him a few times.
Take Hold of the Flame Live in Tokyo is perhaps one of the most reviewed songs from vocal experts!!!:..due to the fact that Geoff Tate gets to notes that are practically impossible for a man. Check the song from this same concert...is amazing! The whole band is just perfect.
This video is from the same concert …
@@DMKali Take Hold of the Flame is the first song of the encore. Queen of the Reich was the ending song.
In my opinion it's the greatest live performance ever

I've been a fan of Geoff and Queensryche for 35 years. He STILL gives me chills and I listen to him at least once a day.

Couldn’t blow Metallica off stage in an energy sense. They wouldn’t think to write riffs like James either. Great band though.
Geoff has an amazing range...very rich lower register also. I am a huge fan, their body of work is an incredible rabbit hole...
One of the most underrated of all band in Rock. And his voice also.
Dual guitar solos are queensryche specialty😊.
HIS SECOND ENCORE THAT NIGHT. CHILLS every time!!

Greatest prog metal band of all time... especially this line up, Geoff Tate, Chris DeGarmo Micheal Wilton, Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield.

Thanks for reviewing this. Hopefully all of the "Ryche-heads" find your channel. You are correct that they are one of the pioneers of Prog Metal. It's probably not feasible to review an entire album, but their concept album "Operation Mindcrime" is worth a listen. Geoff Tate was 25 in 1984 and now at 63 he can STILL hit that E5 high note but downtuned in his own band.

totally love Queensryche! You should check out their 'Silent Lucidity' track. Serious power ballad stuff.
1 review of the 'Ryche and you have a new subscriber!! So many amazing ones to mention but try "someone else" from near the end of their journey as the original band.
Geoff Tate damn near blowing out the speakers with a belt like that it was queensryche fates warning and dream theater blind guardian hammerfall
They’re still out there creating new music and still a force to be reckoned with. The lineup has changed, but they’re still as tight as ever, and they found a capable replacement singer in Todd La Torre. They put out their most recent album back in October 2022, Digital Noise Alliance.
Geoff actually has a deep voice...
Anything live
I highly, highly recommend their concept album, Operation Mindcrime. It is one of the best albums of all time and imo, the best concept/visual album of all time.

I've also found a full copy of their Operation Livecrime concert. The story, drama, and theatrics are so, so worth the watch! Geoff Tate is really at his best live and performing on a stage. Geoff doesn't just sing a song, he performs it. This is a Rock Opera and it is FANTASTIC:

You should react to die for my sins by sanctuary. The vocalist had the same vocal coach as Geoff Tate but has his own unique twist
This is a pure true classic best HEAVY METAL in the begin , 83 , 84
Yeah holy fuck
Lady Wore Black from this same Tokyo concert is good....actually, the whole concert is a Masterclass.....206
They are the fathers of progressive metal. By the way, I am a huge Symphony X fan!! 🤘
Will somebody please comment already on the most impressive part of this whole performance, last song of the set. Holyshit. I went to the store yes I'm not old and yes my grandkids love it
Geoff is touring right now and sounds just as good 🙌🏻
Uh ......ummm.......really? He can't come near to that high anymore, sadly. 😐
Love some symphony x!!! The sacrifice is one of my favs!!! Russell Allen has a great voice!! But you can tell they get a lot of influence from these guys.
Recommendation, "TAKE HOLD OF THE FLAME" live in Tokyo 84 "EYES OF A STRANGER" "SILENT LUCIDITY" "JET CITY WOMAN" ANYBODY LISTENING" "SOMEONE ELSE"
😮
This is one of the first prog metal acts, the other one would be Savatage, but they went more prog as the 80's progressed
Basically... yes. Russel Allen and Geoff Tate are pretty damn close in vocal styles, and both bands are/were Prog Rock.
Anyone else think, "Walk in the Shadows" when he said "lurking in the shadows?
Symphony X has some killer songs, too. Paradise Lost is a heavy album.
Definitely check out some dream theater as well if you like prog metal
I think they were called The Mob before changing to Queensryche.
Geoff Tate is a beast! Un fn real!
Geoff Tate to me os one of the premier singers, up there with Ian Gillan, rob Halford, Tarja TUrunun and Bruce Dickinson.
Queensryche,, Fates Warning,,, and Dreamtheater are the best of the best progressive original metal trio bands
That drummer!
Check out their song “ Suite Sister Mary “ super underrated
Geoff Tate is on the top 3 in the history of hard Rock and metal male vocalist. Those who put out of the top 3 or Top 5 don't know ANYTHING ABOUT MUSIC.
Listen to Operation mind crime start to end. It’s the 2nd greatest concept album next to The wall. Under rated song by them is Someone Else.
I suggest You to hear "Blinded" in the same show
You have to remember, this song is off the E,P....This is before the first album....how amazing, the production they had.....Tate was the man
This was the ninth song so u know his vocal cords were worn out but still perfect pitch
love how you research the band and teach as you preach! just saw your review on slayer war ensemble which got me here! in regards to tates voice... this is LIVE!!! insane voice... seen him live 3 times and he never disappoints... too bad hes an ass hat... met him a few times.
I saw them on tour with Ozzy in the mid 80's and they performed this, had the whole venue on it's feet.
Thats Gefforey with a J 2 u.
