Agreed. Chris DeGarmo's magic on lead guitar, Geoff's voice, all that. Yes, original is the only way to go with this band. It's a shame Chris eventually left, then the band and Tate couldn't get along (how many times have we had that story with bands and egos getting in the way? Answer: too many).
If they did a reunion of original members (with Chris and Geoff), those shows would be sold out from middle-aged people like me in their 50s (along with some in their 40s/60s).

I got into Queensryche right away. Had this EP before they put anything else out. The Lady Wore Black is another great song on this EP. Really everything they put out up until Empire was awesome....after that they fell off a cliff. I assume that's when the money became an issue, which unfortunately happens to many bands that make it big a little bit too fast.

My cousin bought this EP at a place called The Record Bar in New Orleans East back in 1983.
He stopped by my house on his way home and said that he bought it because of the cool album cover.
He opened it up and we dropped the needle on my record player and we were immediately blown away!
    I will never forget that!

"Dark musical theater"...exactly. In the early days this band was known for having 'concept albums', the peak of which was their last real metal album, Operation: Mindcrime. There's no denying their amazing talent, especially vocalist Geoff Tate. By 1990 when my drummer/producer and I began actively recruiting for singers in Seattle, SO many guys showed up quoting Tate as their prime influence & trying to sound like him, hehe. I agree with others here, "The Lady Wore Black" is another top track of this band; along with several from Mindcrime.

This was actually a demo recorded in 1982 (originally 'Queensrych'), and it was released as the 'Queensryche' EP in 1983... The band was initially called The Mob in Seattle, and they started to write heavy metal songs. Geoff Tate was the singer in another band Myth... he was asked to record vocals for the demo; he agreed only if he could write a song that worked in the band... That song was 'The lady wore black' and made the 4 song demo. The band played as Queensryche for the first time after the demo was recorded.
A copy of the demo got good reviews in England, and it was released in 1983 and got the band signed to EMI records in America... a cheesy video made for 'Queen of the reich' aired on MTV. Queensryche would record their first full album 'The Warning' in 1984 and got some fanfare in Japan & Europe.
