Rik was my music business and songwriting teacher in college just over a decade ago. Let alone his performance and compositional chops: he was one of the most invested and passionate teachers I’ve come across. Positive, knowledgeable and demanding yet fair - we’d often get emails late at night following up on questions we’d asked in class. I remember those classes very fondly.

Rik Emmett was born and to this day is left handed by nature, However his guitar teacher made him learn to play guitar right handed because that is what he was. It amazes me to think how difficult it must have been for him starting out at a disadvantage. Apparently if you are born with the gift of talent you can overcome anything and still become a virtuoso none the less.
Every single time I see you react to Triumph, I cannot click play fast enough. Rik and the boys were so good, and the fact that he plays great guitar, and can sing like that, makes him one of the best of all-time.

Yeah I think I saw an interview with Rik a while back and he said back then he realized he had a gift he was given to make music and he loved making music and he didn't want to really waste what he was given, so he never really got into all that excess other bands were getting into. He took care of himself and it showed as he got older. So I think a lot of their music and lyrics echoed the band's outlook on that.
First concert I ever saw was Triumph, Just a game tour at Landsdowne park. I have led a blessed life. I can still play fantasy serenade ok, I could never get the speed for the cascade part.
I saw Triumph back in '86. It was the perfect arena rock experience. Full on light show, incredible sound and musicianship, and yes Rik's singing was something to behold. So thankful I got to see them while they were still around. Super underrated band.
Yep..saw them starting in '78 and last time in '86. Rik was mind blowing, as was the entire band and stage production. First became a fan in '77. They were super popular in our high school in southwest Indiana. Saw them first at the old coliseum in downtown Evansville, IN. No opening band...they played for two hours...was awesome!
I'm so glad that you and Elizabeth reminded me how great Triumph was. I was a huge fan in high school but kind of forgot about them. They deserve more recognition.❤
if that’s Elizabeth from the charismatic voice, you are referring to she totally disrespected triumph. Her whole video is basically about her eating. It was a joke, and I’m really pissed at her.
The cousin of a friend visited my hometown in Georgia back around 1985. He came from Texas and brought with him Triumph’s Allied Forces album, asking if I’d ever heard it. I hadn’t, but I was blown away and still am. It’s one of those perfect albums where every single song is phenomenal, and it started me on my Triumph journey. Can’t say enough good things about them.
I listened to Triumph all through high school In the eighties. Their songs are full of positivity. They were great to listen to as a young man making his way.
Same here, but started in '77 to '81 in high school...they were very popular at our high school in southwest Indiana! Been a fan ever since...saw them four times '78 to '86.
Always loved my Canadian power trios: Rush and Triumph. So much good music. Also, it's charming watching you fangirl over Rik all these years later. He was, and still is, an impressive performer; the kind that makes you grin from ear to ear while you watch him have the time of his life up on stage.
I'm 50 years old. I've heard their music over the years, but I never really have thought about how great they were as a band. They're one of those bands that sound even better live. Definitely one of my favorite bands of all time now, and I put Rick right up there with the likes of Steve Perry as far as best live vocalist. Loved the reaction and break down.
I disagree. By this point, Triumph was being played on MTV and radio on rotation. This was the right at the height of their popularity. They had multiple hits at this point. I was eleven when the Us festival happened and I knew who they were and heard them often on the radio and on MTV.
@@wordragon ...yawn - I was there so... I know what I heard people saying. I didn't say "no one" had heard of them, I said "many". Some knew maybe one song but didn't know the band who sang it... etc... It is what it is 🤘
@@fishman-tr9im The bands from that day that I remember from that day, Motley Crew, Quiet Riot, Triumph, Joe Walsh, replaced John Cougar Mellencamp, Scorpions, and Van Halen.
Bethany, I’m glad I stumbled across your videos. I’m a bit too old for vocal coaching so I don’t watch for your technical commentary. But it just warms my heart to see a young person like yourself enraptured by the music that was so important to me in my youth. It really takes me back to when it was new for me too. Thanks.
I usually dislike reactions to live performances. Triumph is the one exception. Rik Emmett is one of the few singers that sounds better in a live performance than in a studio. Thanks for shining some light on one of my favorite bands, and these lyrics are so true. The magic power of music is never gonna stop. I'm 60 and I still feel it as much as I did when I was 18.
This vocal coach has great taste in music. I really love that she likes Triumph so much, and I enjoy her analyses. I've loved this song since 1981. Does anyone else feel that Triumph is underrated?
I saw Triumph twice and the sport of Kings tour at the Star Theater in Vancouver BC was the best concert I've ever been to. I have been to over a thousand concerts and nothing even comes close to the stage show the sound quality and the performance
It's so amazing to see someone who is so virtuosic on guitar, yet can still blow the mind of a vocal coach. All at the same time, and make it look so effortless. And give off such a vibe of cool and nice as well.
Saw them 4 times and i was amazed everytime! I met Rik Emmett twice and what a classy guy and he could do it all, awesome singer, awesome song writer and most of all to me Rik is one of the very very best guitar player i have ever seen! As one of their biggest fan since day one and still am to this very day find that it!s sad that they never had the credit they truly deserved… To me they are and will be forever music legends!…
Part IV 😲 HOLY SMOKES his mic proximity technique on the outro " aaahhiiiIIIIiiiiiii got the music"!!! Master Class performance!! Great!! Another regret! Never seen them live either! 😢
Back in the days of long hair and freedom. We did not know how good we had it! I once heard a comedian say "Youth is wasted on the young." That's a little mean, but it has some truth mixed in there. I was never a huge Triumph fan. I know their work. There were so many good bands back then. I saw several great ones!!!! Born at the right time!!!! This was back before the Internet so groups had to get out on the road to get their work out to the masses. Some of these concerts were much more fun than listening to an album. The vocalist is playing a 12 string. COOL....... Thank you Bethany for sharing your knowledge with us mere mortals. You are wonderful........
This show took Triumph, already a big name in rock and turned them into absolute mega star Rock & Roll legends. One of the greatest live performances ever
Such a great band. Was so glad I got to see them in my youth. I was even there in Providence RI when they filmed the video for Follow Your Heart. They were like Rush for me. Anytime they came around near me I would go see them. Rik had such an incredible voice, and Gil had such a good voice on the songs he did!
I confess that after watching your first two Triumph videos, and knowing this performance, I was eagerly waiting for your analysis of this song - the best in the set. And you didn't disappoint. I love seeing the elation in your expression, and your obvious enjoyment of the music, as well as the vocals! FYI, there is a video on you tube of Rik Emmett performing "Magic Power" solo more recently, where he starts off the song, then makes the point that he wrote the song in one key, but now he's forced to sing it in another key - about a fifth lower. Still a great performer, but 40 years will have that effect on one's vocal range, I guess.
These are fun reactions to watch. The good news is, Triumph has more songs. At the risk of piling too much praise on Rik, but he also plays great jazz guitar and classical guitar. He would often have a guitar etude as one of the songs on their albums. But like you said, I've never heard any guy actually have some rasp in their voice at the pitches he's hitting. It's crazy.
So nice to see others find joy in Triumph. So good and the song truly represents what you do. Songs can bring you to a moment in time and help you forget everything else. Great song and channel. "But the music's got the magic It's your one chance for escape"
Triumph is always uplifting musically and lyrically. There is no dark sad attitudes to any kind of their material. Most people gravitate to music when they are down to be uplifted and Triumph always delivers!!
There's something Rik did at 15:30 that adds to the dynamics. He turned his head away from the mic and started to sing then turned his head slowly back to the mic giving the effect of a fade in on that perfect beautiful note he sang. Really artful dynamic brilliant singing. While playing guitar at a high level. Very unique
Thank you Bethany. We have some of the greatest bands in the world in Canada. What else do we do for 6 months of winter. Triumph, April Wine, The Guess Who, Saga, Harlequin, Prism, Honeymoon Suite, Red Rider, Doug and the Slugs, FM,The Stampeders, BTO, Loverboy, Rush, Aldo Nova,Lighthouse, Kim Mitchell, Streetheart, Chilliwack, The Tragically Hip…… the list goes on and on. Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings, Bryan Adams….Myself being 60, I grew up listening to some of the best music ever🤟🇨🇦🤟🇨🇦🤟🇨🇦🤟🇨🇦🤟🇨🇦🇨🇦. Yes I did edit this to add some more. Can’t believe I left out Prism
The breakdown at the end was not part of the original song. They added that for this performance. I think it just elevates the song to a whole new level of amazing
Elizabeth, being from Toronto and being a certain age, I had the chance to see them live from the beginning of their career. Gil Moore Triumph's drummer, is also a very good vocalist in his own right. Spellbound, Just One Night,Allied Forces are all good examples. He was the lead singer on nearly half of Triumph's songs.
I'm lucky enough to see them play at L' Amoreaux and Leacock in Scarberia not long apart. Cost less with your SAC card. They started a fire at L'am, and someone started a flood at Leacock. Great times!
The entire set was full of magic power. It's one of the best rock performances of that era, in my opinion. I was fortunate to see Triumph 5 times, and they always put on a great show. Great light shows, they were one of the original bands that had the spectacular laser and fireworks at their shows.
I could hear the excitement in your voice the second the video started and ... me too, me too. Their live stuff just blows me away. This is exactly what I needed on a Monday morning after a rough weekend... thanks. :)
So much fun watching you struggle and try to describe Ric's vocals. I think the lack of words speaks volumes on just how special Ric's voice is. For nearly 40 years, I've argued that he is the best singer/guitarist in rock and seeing how much you appreciate his talent is so very refreshing to see. Thank you so very much for your reaction and your knowledge. I didn't think I could appreciate Ric's voice anymore that I have, but I think I do now.
I don't think there is any singer/guitarist who covers all the bases like he can do. Are their better singers? Yes, Better Guitarists? Yes. I just cannot think of any other who can do both at such a high level at the same time, especially live.
typical Triumph fan. Sticks his head above the crowd to yell out the answer which turns out to be wrong. Kind of like the band itself, trying so hard yet failing at every attempt. Fvkin garbage lyrics, garbage songs, garbage fans.
My favorite song with my favorite band! Whenever I am feeling out of sorts, I always listen to this song and it never fails to lift my spirits. I was fortunate enough to meet Rik a few times. He toured by himself and played in the bar where I worked. He was so nice and down to earth. He got a kick out of the fact that Triumph was my first concert! 😊
The head voice that Rik Emmett chimes in on right at the beginning is so unexpected but also right on the money. As you have keenly observed Bethany, Canada for the Win! 🎵🎸
Watching these reactions reminds me of the magic that I experienced back in the day. Triumph has always been one of my favorites along with Priest and Maiden and Floyd and so many others. Thank you for these. I relive my amazement through you and it's priceless. I will see you on the next one.
Great reaction! Try the song “When the lights go down” from this same concert. It features the drummer on vocals who’s awesome in his own right! Trust us we Triumph fans know!
One of my all time favorite songs! Super fun reaction! Your expression from note one was everything I was hoping for and it continued all the way through! It made my day! I love watching their US Festival performances, and I watch this particular one all the time! Rick Emmett makes it look so effortless! There are videos of him now that he is older performing this song and he still sounds great. In some of them, he talks about writing the song. Thanks for doing this reaction. I can't wait to see more Triumph. Their song "Hold On" is another great one!
I just Love watching this your Enthusiasm reminds me of how much I Loved getting to see Triumph Live this tour was their “Never Surrender” Album Tour which you just have to watch them perform the song”Never Surrender” same concert but I remember 2 weeks after this Festival they came to Texas and they were nearly Perfect and the Beautiful part he added to live performance of “Magic Power” at the end of the song was Beautiful! I remember telling anyone I knew after seeing them live so many times I would tell anyone I could tell how Great these Guys were. I have gotten to meet them over the years and the Nicest Guys Rik is just so down to earth and funny He was a Super Star The Drummer is also a Singer on many songs when the 2 sing together there is a particular song you should listen to off The Album “Thunder Seven” the song “Killing Time” Great example not a live video I can find. There is a concert video 1987 which was the last tour unfortunately with Rik “Live in Halifax” You have to to watch”Lay it on The Line” changes that up some funny thing when they first got together and first recorded the album cover had made mistake and changed spelling of Rick’s name to Rik to much trouble changing back I know You will like even more of these songs. I sound like a Promoter first time I heard them I couldn’t change tapes kept listening on the way to a Music Festival and I was just 16 years old and as soon as I got home I called our local Rock station and DJ had not heard I went out bought 2 copies of their album Just A Game and gave one to DJ at radio station that station still plays a song from that album. You are doing Absolutely Awesome! This was Fun again!
Not only they were great musicians but also they had outside talents that really complimented each other, like great marketer or technical studio genius.
You are Absolutely Giddy over Rik's vocal Prowess and your Smile Shines with the Joy we All experience(d). Wonderful to live vicariously through you hearing for the first time. Keep them coming. And listen to some Triumph songs where Gil Moore is singing...Two Great Voices in one band!
I was a senior in high school in 78. By 82 I was DJ in a club, I played these guys all the time. I have been listening to all kinds of music ever since, and these guys are still great. Unfortunately, raido stations today are all programed by 4 to 5 people. You almost never here new bands because of it. You have to go find it. One comes to mind is the Warring. Thanks for covering this.
I love how much you love this band. triumph is so underrated. And make no mistake. Rik carried this band, musically. No harm in that, he’s that good. Thanks for doing this!
Remember when they played at my high?school in Scarberia? $2. With an SAC card, $1.75. A flashpot started a little fire, the curtains. School smelled like smoke for a week. Good times. A few weeks later at a neighbouring high?school watching Triumph, someone ripped a urinal off the wall and flooded a hallway. I've seen them dozens of times since. Always a good time.
Phenomenal reaction as always. I think it’s time to go a little deeper down the rabbit hole. Triumph has two lead singers. 😉 I recommend Follow your Heart and Spellbound. You will fall in love with them…again. Keep up the great work!!! 🔥👏🏼❤️
Triumph is one of my favorite bands and this song is one my favorites by them. I was about 19 yrs old when this came out and got to see them live! Jealous? 😅 You’re a joy to watch. Glad you’re such a fan of them. Keep it up! 👍
I hope you've seen some of Rik Emmets more recent videos. How he's modified his vocal techniques to suit his aging and changing voice. He's brilliant, and still amazing. Also, truly seems to be a fantastic human being. I can see the crush you have, and I can understand, as I've had a man-crush on him for forty years. (Who wouldn't?)

This is my favorite Triumph song, and one of my favorite outro's of any song ever. I love the dynamics in this tune. It goes from kicking butt, to slowing down, and giving you goose bumps. And Rik's voice, just Wow.

A lot of talent came out of Canada, Triumph, Rush, The Tragically Hip, The Guess Who, Barenaked Ladies, Bachman Turner Overdrive, April Wine, Blue Rodeo. Always loved my Canadian power trios: Rush and Triumph. So much good music. Also, it's charming watching you fangirl over Rik all these years later. He was, and still is, an impressive performer; the kind that makes you grin from ear to ear while you watch him have the time of his life up on stage.
I accept being old now, because it means I got to be young then...
Born in '64 and these guys were a soundtrack to countless precious memories. 🤘
Niiiiiiice ✌🏼🌻
I’m 61… too many parties and memories of listening to TRIUMPH. You sit back and listen this. This song is absolute art.
Amen
You'd still be shocked w his vocals as an old man. Just saying as an old lady😊
Many people came to this festival not really knowing who Triumph was...and then they left, singing their songs... Triumph crushed it. 🤘
Some knew maybe one song but didn't know the band who sang it... etc... It is what it is 🤘
@@fishman-tr9im -Why the "yawn"? I was just saying at 11 I knew them, and I remember them being on rotation on radio and tv, no need to be an ass.
@fishman-tr9im I was also there right up front bring crushed.. The water cannons stopped working, so they started throw out gallon jugs of water.
@@fishman-tr9im The bands from that day that I remember from that day, Motley Crew, Quiet Riot, Triumph, Joe Walsh, replaced John Cougar Mellencamp, Scorpions, and Van Halen.
I first saw them live at the US Festival 1983. They stood out. Outstanding live performance. Big fan.
Thanks.
Long time Triumph fan. This song made me feel like there was magic in life. Thank you for coming back to this band.
Such a fan girl. Bethany. Lol. Being a Canadian Prairie boy in his 60s, I get the magic. Thank you for your reactions, my dear. 😊🙏🎶🧚♀🎶
Yep saw them four times from '78 to '86...Rik was always mind blowing vocalist and guitarist.
This vocal coach has great taste in music. I really love that she likes Triumph so much, and I enjoy her analyses. I've loved this song since 1981. Does anyone else feel that Triumph is underrated?
criminally so
Criminaly. Max Webster, saga April wine (drummer uses a ref's whistle to end the hypnotic drum solo. who does that?)
I saw Triumph twice and the sport of Kings tour at the Star Theater in Vancouver BC was the best concert I've ever been to. I have been to over a thousand concerts and nothing even comes close to the stage show the sound quality and the performance
One of my favorite bands of all time and Rik is way underrated and never got the recognition as a guitar player that he should have
Canada's OTHER three-member rock band.
"But the music's got the magic
It's your one chance for escape"
Triumph is always uplifting musically and lyrically. There is no dark sad attitudes to any kind of their material. Most people gravitate to music when they are down to be uplifted and Triumph always delivers!!
There's something Rik did at 15:30 that adds to the dynamics. He turned his head away from the mic and started to sing then turned his head slowly back to the mic giving the effect of a fade in on that perfect beautiful note he sang. Really artful dynamic brilliant singing. While playing guitar at a high level. Very unique
My favorite part of that performance.
@@robbchadwick2793 Mine too it gives me chills every time I hear that part.
It's a very short list of elite guitar players on rik's level with a voice like his, especially live. LIVE is the real test
I love watching your reactions to Triumph!! NEXT You need to do Never Surrender from the same concert.. amazing range on display again!
The Guess Who 🎉
Big Wreck..Big Sugar
Loverboy would be a good one for her to review next. Man they took the rock world by storm for a few years there.
Glass Tiger!
The Tragically Hip will forever be one of my top 5 bands
This is my favorite Triumph song, and that day is one of the best shows I ever got to see, as far as a festival.
You just made my day. All you say is what I always felt, for 40 years now, listening to Triumph - and Rick Emmett.
The breakdown at the end was not part of the original song. They added that for this performance. I think it just elevates the song to a whole new level of amazing
The breakdown at the end is from a song called "Don't take my life", from their debut album.
@@garytate3075 - That slow section at the end really showcases Rik's voice. Such a perfect way to end the song.
Just one Night. Deep cut ballad. Really shows the quality of Gil ‘s voice. Great mention. Always thought that would great in a movie.
The entire set was full of magic power. It's one of the best rock performances of that era, in my opinion. I was fortunate to see Triumph 5 times, and they always put on a great show. Great light shows, they were one of the original bands that had the spectacular laser and fireworks at their shows.
I've been waiting for this everyday like a kid on Christmas
I could hear the excitement in your voice the second the video started and ... me too, me too. Their live stuff just blows me away.
This is exactly what I needed on a Monday morning after a rough weekend... thanks. :)
Loved these guys! So talented! Rik’s voice, there are no words.
This song is the one that got me listening to them. I have since heard other songs of theirs I prefer, but this one has a special place in my heart.
It gives me joy to see you light up as you listen to a band I love. Thanks for sharing it!
Enjoyable video and live performance. The shots of the crowd perfectly matched the vibe and lyrics of the song.
AND slinging a 15 lbs double neck Gibson!! Rik is a under PRAISED singer for sure! Thanks Bethany!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Dude, it's a double necked Yamaha
@@Bill-i1m It's actually a IBANEZ! I looked it up and corrected on the Part II 😁
Oops. Rik was known for playing Yamaha guitars. It kinda looks like SBG. Allen. Witch isn't a Gibson
typical Triumph fan. Sticks his head above the crowd to yell out the answer which turns out to be wrong. Kind of like the band itself, trying so hard yet failing at every attempt. Fvkin garbage lyrics, garbage songs, garbage fans.
@@Bill-i1m Looks to be a beautiful Ibanez. Can't wait to get home and see it on the 60" screen!!
Rik is the best !! Besides one of the greatest voices, he’s also playing a double neck, 6 and 12 string guitar simultaneously !!!
YES!! I am here for this!!! Love how you're just listening and loving the music :)
Yes. Gil rocks that!
It's been fun watching you turn into a Triumph groupie. Great reaction! 😊❤
I agree. I seen them in 1987 Dallas for their Sport of Kings tour. My favorite band.
I've walked out of several jobs playing THIS song! I'm young I'm wild and I'm FREE! Forever!
Your analysis gives me an entire new appreciation for the song and Rik’s vocal capabilities.
Love Triumph and the power of their vocals and music! Thank you for reacting!
My favorite song! Uplifting and such positive energy. Pure magic.
Phenomenal reaction as always. I think it’s time to go a little deeper down the rabbit hole. Triumph has two lead singers. 😉
I recommend Follow your Heart and Spellbound. You will fall in love with them…again.
Keep up the great work!!!

Being into Triumph back when they were new definitely made you feel their 'Magic Power.'

It would be very interesting to see the commentary on that.
Rik was not only a phenomenal vocalist ,but his guitar playing is top notch. as good as it gets.

A lot of talent came out of Canada, Triumph, Rush, The Tragically Hip, The Guess Who, Barenaked Ladies, Bachman Turner Overdrive, April Wine, Blue Rodeo.
How anybody can say these bands are underrated boggles my mind... They might have been overshadowed by American bands during their time...but real Canucks know the truth, all of the listed bands I put here and more definitely got time in the spotlight.
