Let's not forget that it's straight on playing and singing. NO auto tune, NO ear monitors, NO tricks. Just unbelievable talent. Triumph was and still is truly special.
It’s a very simple formula… An unbelievably tight and talented band with one of the greatest singer/guitarists to ever set foot on a stage! Criminally underestimated unfortunately…
Videos of this live US Festival performance have been put up and taken down on RUclips a few times over the years. The original version from years ago did have a lot of views (millions).
Criminally underrated band. Have been a Triumph fan for decades. Rik Emmett is amazing, the singing is incredible, the guitar playing is incredible. Also, the drummer Gil Moore sings lead on several of their hit songs, as well as great harmonies, which were not present in this song. They have a live album called Stages, which I wore my cassette out.
OMG, I was a young teen when I went to the US fest and saw this Triumph performance. Now 40 years later I am a music producer in Nashville, thank you Triumph and Rik Emmett for the inspiration. I still have the magic power of music in me.
It took me a long time to realize the genius of Triumph. And to see this woman's face light up the first time she hears them is so worth it. She exemplifies most peoples response to hearing Rik's voice. The genuine smile and overwhelming dismay at what comes out of his mouth is Incredible!
Triumph was huge in the late 70s and early 80s, then had a modest resurgence in the late 80s with the Sport of Kings album. The one thing Triumph could always do was fill seats at a concert because they were really amazing live.
Yes! You finally dove into the Triumph rabbit hole and I couldn't be happier! These guys are absolutely incredible live and I was so lucky to see them many times over the years. Rick Emmett has a phenomenal voice. Thanks for doing this and don't stop here. They have so many more such as 'Magic Power', 'Lay It On The Line' and 'Follow Your Heart". Enjoy!
The heavy metal day had a lot of heavy hitters at the 83 US festival. Consensus is they stole the show that day by many accounts. The reason it doesn't have a lot of views is because it's been taken down many many times over the years due to copyright because this is a for purchase video.
Amen, my brother! As a Canuck, I can tell you they still are my favourite Canadian band. Rick is my guitar hero. I spent many a night in the Army working out to Triumph. Both he and Gil Moore are great vocalists. What a drummer. And Mike Levine is a fantastic bassist/keyboardist. He is great at crowd interactions. He was the hype man in his day.
Rik Emmett wrote this song for his aunt, who was dying of cancer. As a person fighting cancer myself, this song touches me in a new way from when I saw them in concert back in the early 80s. Love this band! Thanks for putting this up.
What’s incredible is that as a professional Sound Engineer for 35 years I remember watching this concert when I was in high school and being blown away. So much so that about 10 years ago I went looking to see if I can find it on DVD and I found it. It was as amazing on rediscovering as I thought it was when I saw it happen, live in 1983. This performance was a motivator for me to be the connection between a band and their audience. So here I am today some 35 years after I started working professionally in the music industry, reflecting on the impact this performance had on me. I’ve traveled to 39 countries working with very famous artists, my whole adult life. And it makes me very happy to see the Internet suddenly starting to rediscover this performance. You’re starting to see more and more of these vocal coaches reacting to this performance. Try to find it and enjoy it without any interruptions from someone making commentary on it. No massive affects. No autotune. Just three guys crushing it on borrowed equipment.! This is EPIC. THANK YOU Triumph. Your music impacted me and many others. While I can’t speak for them, I can tell you that your music truly changed me and helped me find my path in life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
🎸🙋♀️Wow love your story! I’ve played music all my life starting with my parent’s band as a toddler. I still love & play covers from my 80s metal bands, Triumph being among my favorites vocally & guitar wise. Rik is incredible!🤩 Fight The Good Fight is absolutely my favorite ‘high’ song to sing. Lol I LOVE Rik’s lyrics too. I also enjoy singing lower male songs that people don’t expect a female to cover. Haha Anyway I agree with you & I’m glad to see the internet rediscovering Triumph. Hopefully they’ll get how these 3 guys crushed it on borrowed equipment! You’re very wise & I couldn’t have said it better. Thx to Triumph & to you for acknowledging their brilliance!😊
I was there at the US festival and they had an incredible stereo sound system! I thought that this was the best performance by any band there and one if the very best that I had ever seen anywhere! That still holds true 30 years later!
i'm old enough that i'm actually blown away when anyone hasn't already had their mind blown by Rik Emmett. very few people are as good a guitarist, as good a singer, OR as good a songwriter, let alone 2 out of 3, let alone all 3. won't see another like him in my lifetime.
I am from Michigan but saw this performance and I will never forget it - they were so very talented and criminally under-rated. To top it all off, to their credit, their lyrics are always positive and uplifting, which is incredibly unique and beautiful
Michigander as well, they were fantastic, so much so that I've forgotten who headlined the show. it was the Toledo Speedway Jam, probably 1980? I went to see Blackfoot but came away a huge fan of Triumph.
They weren't under rated in the day, but as time passes you get set aside unless you continue to perform. Emmitt decided to do other things so those who continued to perform moved ahead of them in the minds of fans. Use it or loose it applies here. If you want to be remembered and highly thought of you need to be dead or still performing with your band. Grand Funk owned the world and took a few years off and were done when they tried to get it going again. Triumph could have been touring with the classic rockers if their era up until today, but Emmitt gave his rights away and never seemed interested in doing more than playing clubs with his solo stuff. He played in front of three or four hundred in Dallas about 20 years ago and it was ok but he had lost the falsetto and appeared to perform to make a few bucks.
Apart from mind blowing vocals and totally virtuoso guitar playing, Triumph have really uplifting lyrics too. Instead of singing about dark emotions (like every single rock band), there is alot of pure joy in their music. And that is another reason to love them.
@patriciahils1961 a local musician in Mississauga, Ontario claims to have written a song "Look at You, Look at Me" and sang it to his wife at their wedding. An employee of Metalworks Studios is said to have stolen the demo. The alleged author claims that the only things that changed were the lyrics.
"Triumph have really uplifting lyrics too." written with all the refinement of a cinder block. "Days grow shorter and the nights are getting long Feels like we're running out of time" No truck stop diner napkin should endure the indignity of having that tripe scribbled upon it. But, hey, you like it; it must speak to your inner emptiness.
His vocals have never been matched ! I get tired of hearing how Freddie Mercury was the best vocalist ever, I don't think he could ever hit the highs and the sustain that Rick Emmett could!
I second that motion! The “official” video of “Lay It On The Line” is great, but the live video from the US Festival is better. You know he’s doing it live, rather than lip-syncing to a studio recording, like most music vids are. About a year and a half ago, Air Canada had a Triumph documentary as part of the in-flight entertainment (along with an Oscar Peterson doc and “Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked The World”).
Lay It on the Line is another one of their great songs, they are such a talented and very under appreciated band by mainstream standards, Rik is also a classically trained guitarist, loved this reaction!
Yes and the live version from this show is the best. Triumph was always better live. I found their studio stuff too polished and subdued. They sound better live. Saw them twice. Just great
Rik is such a guitar wizard that you forget what a great singing voice he had back in his prime. If you really want to hear his voice in it's prime, check out the studio version of Lay It On The Line.
They came to kick butt that day. All the other groups showed up wearing black - they were the good guys in white playing right at sunset. They asked the organizer if he had introduced any other bands so far. When he said no, they said "Well come up on stage and you can introduce us." Total class. I love this concert.
This is from the US Festival Memorial Day weekend 1983, Devore, CA. Somewhere around 375,000 of "us" in the crowd that day! I was 30' from the stage. Triumph played an absolutely amazing set. They were an extremely underrated act on the bill that day, but man they stole the show imo.
US Festival Heavy Metal Day was my first concert at the young age of 15! I loved Triumph! Rik Emmett’s voice is magical and brings back all of the emotions that we’re going on in my life !Now I am 54 and love watching these videos and going back in time so to speak. Where has the gone?
Agree! Much better then Van Halen and make up dolls Motley Crue who both were just hammered! Way to go Rik and the boys! Everyone needs to watch the documentary a few years ago, awesome well done!!
@@batman1169 Not sure if it is in the documentary you watched but they were accompanied by Toronto VJ JD Roberts now better known as John Roberts from Fox News. IIRC they ran into festival sponsor/organizer Steve Wozniak and on the spot asked him to introduce them, he was thrilled.
How cool is this? My first view of your channel and I was actually at this performance! This is day two of the US Festival in Southern California, 1983. The entire lineup that day was fun, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Triumph, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Scorpions and Van Halen (again, Day Two) ..... I'd purchased the LP "Allied Forces" by Triumph but had no idea of what to expect seeing them live. They really did deliver! I was recording for Motown records at the time and my manager handed me tickets to see this show so a free show like this made for a great weekend
I was at this show 40 years ago as a 19 year old. Triumph hit the stage as the sun started to set which gave off a golden ambiance to the whole incredible performance. You can't tell by the video, but the temperature was about 110 degrees. It was incredibily hot that day. Triumph arguably out of all the bands that day were the best of them all. Thanks for the reaction.
I was there too! Triumph (and Scorpions) blew everyone else off the stage that day (including Van Halen, although that was due to a drunk David Lee Roth).
Best quote I’ve heard to describe Triumph. “They were the nice guys in an era meant for the dirt bag.” All of their songs have an uplifting message to them. I’ve seen them live a few times back in the day. Always left the show feeling like the world just became a better place. I’ll always hold Triumph in the highest regard just behind RUSH as the greatest Canadian band ever and simply one of the best rios and bands ever.
Never saw a concert.... still the 80s were overall UPLIFTING. I can get clean no drugs type of band that guess is meant? Still in music..... the songs were uplifting even if the groups were bad a*s types of bands and were seen as party bad. Guess Canadians always see themselves as ..... even today .... will leave it there. I do like the group and yes underrated. Great lead singer voice that does still stand out.
Totally agree about them being underrated! I've been a fan since I was 17, and I'm now 61. Not only is the talent & skill, over the top, but I will go watch triumph videos whenever I'm in a bad mood, because the amount of happy energy that Rik Emmett exudes when he's on stage, is contagious, and you can't help but get happy , too I've seen a lot of bands in all my years (probably been to at least 600 or more concerts) but I've never seen anyone who is Happier to be up there playing then Rik Emmett!!
Criminally underrated. Written off as the "Canadian Journey" and drew a lot of unfair comparisons to Rush simply because they were a Canadian trio. They were my first arena show ever back in the day and their live performances were absolutely amazing.
Try Mystery, another hidden gem from Canada, 1st 2 albums give you some Journey vibe, along with some Rush, Styx, Genesis, Floyd vibe. 8 Great albums, like this new song : ruclips.net/video/4BxjSlW0kkY/видео.htmlsi=lbIjgdHKsOAZv6yS
Loved both bands, but Triumph was always closer to my heart. Kinda weird to think of them “winning” metal day cuz you think of them more as rock, not really metal
Rush get all the plaudits and I'm not saying they don't deserve them. But Triumph deserve so much more recognition as more than just another Canadian Rock trio. Great band. You and your reactions are still just the best!
@@michaelzilkowsky2936 Yeah but his ryhthm playing is a far cry from just basic chords and simplistic riffs and a challenge to play by themselves. I love Rush and Geddy is a monster musician but acting like Emmett isnt is totally asinine
I am so glad people are going back and discovering Triumph and Rik Emmett. Such an amazing guitar player and singer. He was on par with the 'guitar gods' of the day and then his singing was incredible. Thanks for watching this and breaking it down. Love Never Surrender too (either the studio or the US Festival Version).
@@Barefoot433 i mean alot of bands bigger then them have only one or 2 giant hits and then an ok catalog they have 3 or 4 songs worthy of being large hits and then the ok back catalogue. and who knows what would of happened if they were big enough they apparently had alot of trouble getting albums made.
@@VangeliRock Ya they used to sell out massive venues in Detroit, Chicago and other cities. I just think their reign was rather short and they didn't get the air time they deserved.
Rik Emmett was nothing short of incredible. Great guitar player, great vocals, unique, identifiable sound...just incredible! Check out more of their stuff. Magic Power, World of Fantasy, and especially, Lay It On The Line.
When it comes to Triumph, you not only have the talent but also listen to the lyrics. When I was a kid and first heard Magic Power, I learned two things. 1) There is someone singing about my love for music. 2) I am not alone! Those were the first time I felt that way and that song cemented a place in my personality. It is OK to love music to the point that you can let yourself go in it. The lyrics of all the Triumph songs always seem positive, uplifting and instructive on how to live life right. Fight the good fight every moment of every day.
Agreed. Their lyrics, especially Rik’s, helped expand my pre teen mind. Songs like FTGF and, for me, Ordinary Man, actually made me think! “Yeah watchdog of justice, who DOES keep their eye on you?” A bit deeper than typical rock lyrics
Thank you for covering this highly under-appreciated band. For us high school hard rockers in the early 80s, the lyrics and power behind them grounded some of the suburban teenaged angst
So true--Magic Power spoke directly to me, I turned my little radio on and the rotten day floated away. Their lyrics hit home every time. I could never stop listening to their albums!
Three guys. Rik Emmet is not only a Guitar God, but his high notes are also legendary in rock history. He's still performing solo. An amazing talent and a great teacher.
Triumph is one of my all-time favorite bands. Rik's vocals and guitar playing are top-notch and he makes it look so easy. He also had the face of an angel. Definitely the whole package and then some as far as front men go.
Young lady imagine being at their concert, imagine hearing them play on the radio for the 1st time, musicians don't have this kind of talent anymore, I was always n will forever b a Triumph fan 🎶🎤🎸
You need to hear more from them. They were known for incredible shows with lighting and everything. Rick Emmett also plays the double stack guitar. Their songs are so uplifting lyrically and musically.
They were the only band during the entire festival that secured rights to their performance. This why they have the only "official" US Festival performance DVD on the market. I bought it the day that is was released, well worth the money spent. 🙂
1:42 Just now hearing Triumph for the first time, where have you been? You did a solid job of dissecting and analyzing the song and Rik's voice. What a great band!
Love seeing you listen to this band, one of my very favorites from the 80s, saw them live 3 times. The good guys of hard rock at the time, always spreading a positive message. Rik is an incredible guitarist and vocalist. Thanks for this reaction, Bethany!
THANK YOU! Triumph was SO underrated as a band. I love watching this, because I (with the rest of the fans here) - we KNOW what's coming. We know you're not only going to be amazed, but Triumph is going to make a lasting impression on you. Thank you for being a champion of great vocalists/bands. The world needs more of this.
Yes, they were underrated. So ridiculous. What? Because they have positive lyrics? God forbid! Haha. I remember my boyfriend, when this song came out, would try to make fun of me appreciating Rik's voice. My boyfriend, named Rick, (weird huh)🤔😄 would try to sing Rik's highest power voice part and his voice would start cracking and just plain went out. Made me laugh. I was so proud of Rik E.! Never enough credit but we who knew better, enjoyed!
Watch the whole concert, Rik absolutely makes it look effortless and the energy he puts into the whole show is unbelievable, he even does a long guitar solo so the other guys can take a break.
Living in Toronto, I first saw them at a High School performance in the auditorium, just after their first album was released. When that album came out, they were unknown, but it was so good we didn't take it off the turntable for three months, when the grooves were worn out. Somehow, I KNEW they were going to make it big! Rick's voice is angelic and note-perfect. I've listened in amazement watching them live, knowing there's a high note coming and wondering if he'll hit it, or sing around it. He didn't hit it, he took it higher...goosebumps! As amazing a singer as he is, he's every bit as good as a guitarist, Canada's version of Eddy Van Halen, Rick was also a great lyricist & song-writer...a quadruple talent who's band propelled them right to the top! Ace up their sleeve: their fantastic drummer is ALSO an amazing singer, lyricist, and song-writer! How many three-man band have TWO great singers? I don't agree they were under-rated , after numerous albums, videos & radio hits, they broke up while still on top, just as popular musical tastes were starting to change from arena rock towards the crap that rules now, and they just sort of were 'forgotten' except for their top hits which still get played on Classic Rock FM.
Anyone want to acknowledge that he's playing guitar at a virtuoso level WHILE he is singing at an other worldly level. And honestly you think he should be rocking out while he's doing that ? Cmon man ...
The drummer Gil Moore is also a terrific vocalist. Some songs feature him on lead, but either way they always have stellar vocals including backup and harmonies! This is a criminally underrated band outside of Canada, except by those in the know who became diehard fans and supporters, because this band and their music is phenomenal. Please do more: Lay it on the Line, Hold On, Magic Power, Allied Forces, Rock n' roll Machine, Ordinary Man, Spellbound, Follow Your Heart, Never Surrender, World of Fantasy, When the lights go down, Tears in the Rain, Somebody's Out There.
This got me in the mood for listening to more Triumph and one of the songs Killing Time stood out vocally as it features Gil and Rik singing together in some sections then trading lines in others with some harmony lines as well. Not the most impressive song from them vocally, but a lot of variety and combinations in one track.
There were only a handful of bands that I felt the need to obtain all of their records to hear their development throughout the years. RUSH and TRIUMPH broke down the barriers entirely for me and millions more like me. Both of these Canuck bands were all I needed to get me through to the next level of my own musical development as a drumming singer. Gil Moore was great. Powerful to say the least. Try Magic Power next from the same recording. It's truly magical...
Way underrated band. I’ve been listening to them since the early 80’s. Check out Skid Row’s Wasted Time for another great Canadian singer Sebastian Bach.
I was fortunate enough to see Triumph in the late 70s They never seemed to get the recognition they deserved. Always a great live show, wonderful sound from all the instruments, and the vocals. Just great rock and roll! Lyrics were fantastic, Riks voice was incredible. This music never gets old.
It's more than obvious that it rendered you speechless at points in trying to describe just how amazing this Canadian trio is. Lay It On the Line, hooked me when I first heard it.
I LOVE LOVE Triiumph. Always feel so positive listening to the great lyrics. But Rik Emmet's voice is unparalled. No autotune and he's so perfect, incredible.
It's good to hear a positive song come out of a relatable struggle. This song was inspired by Rik Emmett's aunt who was fighting cancer at the time. Inspirational.
It is the emotion he puts into the words. He paints the sunset with his voice and you see the night coming on. His voice is a bit melancholy… then he rocks out. Think Styx Rush and Yes and so many 70s and 80s bands. So much emotion… so much soul… they are genuinely feeling their music.
I think that it’s wonderfully refreshing that a younger person such as yourself is discovering this phenomenal music. It’s important to note that this performance was from 40 years ago this past summer. Yes you heard that right this was the summer of 1983. Rick Emmett is one of the most talented, singer guitarist ever in rock music history. He eventually became a music professor at a college and it’s gotten heavily into jazz and jazz fusion music throughout the years incredibly humble, incredibly well spoken and talent off the charts. Phenomenal guitarist an equally phenomenal vocalist.
Rik Emmett is the Rock n roll pride of Mississauga. When living homesick far away from my beloved town of Mississauga, I would hear a Triumph song and I'd feel all better. During the AIDS scare, many rock stars were interviewed and either said "practice safe sex" or "we take our chances". Rik Emmett said that he has always been monogamous... upon reading this, far from home, I was beaming with pride and told my friends in Quebec City, the closest translation was "a good ol' Mississauga boy". Sadly, I learned that "Magic Power" was stolen from a local musician when an employee of Metalworks Studios lifted the musician's demo.
@daveburns9462 If you are referring to me saying that "Magic Power" was stolen, it may be untrue, but I don't know for sure. I was giving a co-worker a lift from work. He had a gig and needed to replace some guitar strings. We stopped at a music store that Rik Emmett was said to frequent. I asked him if he ever saw Rik there. He answered "NOPE...ASS HOLE...HE STOLE MY SONG". I was crestfallen hearing that my teenage hood idol did such a thing. Currently, Rik Emmett teaches MUSIC business at either Humber or Seneca College in Toronto (or maybe Etobicoke). That kind of adds to the suspicion; Rik Emmett knows the ins and outs of the music industry. If he did steal the song, what makes it even worse is that he's talented enough that he doesn't have to steal from ANYONE - especially a much lesser musician than himself.
@@Polytrout a former coworker of mine told me he flew the space shuttle but he was working at mcdonald's. Get a life. He wrote Magic power about himself being the girl because he wanted to get more girls to the concerts. BTW.... Thats from Riks mouth.
@@Polytrout - You said it yourself - Rik doesn’t need to steal songs from anyone. Magic Power is Rik Emmett through and through, from the chord progression to the rhyming couplets to the general positivity of the lyrics.
The 2nd best Canadian power trio. Ever! So much talent and technique. Happy to see you've found these guys. Fun fact - spent an evening with these guys, in the 70s, on their bus parked at a gas station in Chicago...more fun than is actually legal in, almost anywhere..! Keep 'em coming kiddo, I love this trajectory. rl 🤘👹🤘
Thank you so much for reacting to this. Triumph is absolutely one of my favorite bands. Rik's voice is ridiculously cool, and as a person who normally pays a lot more attention to the music vs. the lyrics, I find the lyrics of this song extremely compelling, necessary to make the song complete, and artistically beautiful.
My favorite since I was a little kid. I wish I would have been old enough to have been at this concert. One of the few bands that always sounded just as good live and often even better than in studio. Three people making this powerful of a sound! And yes- they were underrated- I remember calling radio stations and requesting Triumph and either the DJs said they did not know who Triumph was or they scoffed and would not take the request. I hear Triumph more often, now, on the Classic Rock station, than I did on the rock stations back in the day when Triumph was putting out new albums.
The great thing about triumphs vocals is that its high but never obnoxiously so, not overbearing or too much. It flows with the music and explores it at the same time. I know what she means by an orb. He covers so many ranges in just one line. And its really genuine. Incredible band!
The band with 2 of the greatest rock singers ever and Rik Emmet as the classical guitar hero! Thank you for finally recognizing them for their brilliance in the fine room.
I was at that very same concert Triump, and it sounded just as good live being there as it does hearing it on RUclips. Such a great band.. I just subscribed to your channel. I like your assessment.
Absolutely. Been a Triumph fan since 1980 and they were always better live. Their studio stuff is very good but toned down compared to live. Esp the US Festival Set here. One of the best live sets ever. Incredibly tight. Saw them twice. They were incredible ive
Absolutely fantastic power trio that I've loved since I was a teen. I love watching/ listening to Rik Emmett in interviews. He's such an intelligent guy. Magic Power" should be next song on the Triumph docket! ☺
Triumph is my all time favorite band. I was a teen in the 80's and got to see them live several times. They always gave an awesome performance. I still listen to my original vinyl albums and I have all the Triumph albums. Happy to see a young person appreciating such talent.
Triumph is one of my favorite bands! They have so many great songs. Rik Emmett is amazing! Two of my favorite songs are Magic Power and Hold On. Their performance at the US festival is truly spectacular. They killed it. You can find several videos of Rik Emmett performing Magic Power when he is older. I just watched one with him in his 70’s and he is still great!
I first saw this band in Erie while home on leave in 79. When I returned to my base in California I turned my friends on to it. It became our new favorite. Another Canadian favorite is April Wine; awesome.
I had so much Fun watching Your Reaction to Triumph and Especially Rik Emmett last time I Loved watching again seeing Your Excitement and You being a Professional Singer as Well reminds me I know why they are one of my Very Favorite Bands and seeing them 9 times live Rik Emmett never had a bad Performance and less than 2 weeks after this Performance I saw them first time outdoors at a football stadium and they were Neatly Perfect I think I said I have gotten to see about 700 concerts and I once thought about if I was to make a Top Ten Performances Rik Emmett has 3 of those 10 Best Performances Getting so fortunate to grow up in a time of Classic Rock Bands and the Singers Wow I Miss that So Much it was So Crazy I so many Amazing Musicians then and alot of theses Bands were not getting the attention because Disco Ouch I didn’t like Disco! But I Enjoyed watching again Thank You for confirming I was Right about Triumph
I am so happy to see someone do Triumph. They are criminally underrated living under big brother Rush's shadow. They were a different kind of band than Rush, but had immense talent, especially Rick both on vocals and guitar.

Awsome brother!
Always and forever my brother
Right on!
Peace
Rik was in the photo of being the GOAT.
Stuart Adamson was one (Big Country)
I am from Michigan but saw this performance and I will never forget it - they were so very talented and criminally under-rated. To top it all off, to their credit, their lyrics are always positive and uplifting, which is incredibly unique and beautiful
Michigander as well, they were fantastic, so much so that I've forgotten who headlined the show. it was the Toledo Speedway Jam, probably 1980? I went to see Blackfoot but came away a huge fan of Triumph.
I saw Blackfoot once (by accident actually) and became a big fan of theirs, too - you have really good musical taste 😊
Rick Emmett is one of my favorite singers. Triumph is so underrated. Such talent
Totally Agree!
Never underrated here in Canada
One of the few bands with the talent to to prog who chose to play straightforward music instead
These three musicians are so very talented it is a shame that I can't find the words to truly describe them.
Apart from mind blowing vocals and totally virtuoso guitar playing, Triumph have really uplifting lyrics too. Instead of singing about dark emotions (like every single rock band), there is alot of pure joy in their music. And that is another reason to love them.
Agree 💯, my favorite aspect to Triumph is their lyrics
Rik Emmett is a good ol Mississauga boy. Proud to say that he's from my hometown.
Whenever I feel down, I always listen to Magic Power! My favorite song and it always lifts my spirits 😊
"Triumph have really uplifting lyrics too."
written with all the refinement of a cinder block.
"Days grow shorter and the nights are getting long
Feels like we're running out of time"
No truck stop diner napkin should endure the indignity of having that tripe scribbled upon it. But, hey, you like it; it must speak to your inner emptiness.
They remind me a lot of Rush, and I remember them always on the radio when I was a kid. Great memories.
it's always cool when someone hears them for the first time and are blown away by Rik's vocals... one of my favorite bands
Gil is a good singer too.
@@gto1607fuckin aye he is! ❤
@@Goldbay I live for the weekend!!!
You should really watch them doing “Lay it on the line “ if you want to be totally blown away with his vocals
Definitely!!
"The truth will do just fine." 🎯
@@firstbassmusic You misheard a lyric there 😉
His vocals have never been matched !
Rik Emmett, one of the most talented artists in rock history. Incredible singer, guitarist and song writer.
Just great
Great song
@@MrAitraining-I think it actually tops this performance which is in itself surprising.
I didn't know he was classically trained until his strumming at the end and your mention
Look at the way he holds his guitar - very high for a rock player - classical style!
Rik is such a guitar wizard that you forget what a great singing voice he had back in his prime. If you really want to hear his voice in it's prime, check out the studio version of Lay It On The Line.
Love the Gorn profile photo.
I play guitar and sing like Rick but I'm an old Trekkie first and foremost.
Yeah, that piece is flawless! Just perfection!
Credit to the sound department as well. That mix is perfect.
Amazing .......to think of how many bands played. I listened to it live on the radio.
I was actually wondering whether it was really live.
They came to kick butt that day. All the other groups showed up wearing black - they were the good guys in white playing right at sunset. They asked the organizer if he had introduced any other bands so far. When he said no, they said "Well come up on stage and you can introduce us." Total class. I love this concert.
*"WoW"*
That "organizer" was Apple's Steve Wozniak.
Triumph really was one of the absolute highlights of the US Festival.
Canada's Rock and roll machine
Wasn't the " organizer" Steve Baumer?
This is from the US Festival Memorial Day weekend 1983, Devore, CA. Somewhere around 375,000 of "us" in the crowd that day! I was 30' from the stage. Triumph played an absolutely amazing set. They were an extremely underrated act on the bill that day, but man they stole the show imo.
And around 100 degrees F.
Lucky would've loved to be there unfortunately never saw them live but all ways loved group
It is incredible that out of all the huge bands that played that day it is Triumph's performance that is most remembered.
I was 17 at this show. 6 car caravan up the 210 from the SFV.
I was there too! Triumph (and Scorpions) blew everyone else off the stage that day (including Van Halen, although that was due to a drunk David Lee Roth).
I was 15 and too young (per my mom😂) but lived in the area. Listened to it live
They really were the best that day.... Epic!
I heard the same thing
They stoled the show
Best quote I’ve heard to describe Triumph.
Very well put. I totally agree. I am from Canada 🇨🇦
@@StuTube55 I was going to post the same. A criminally underrated band.
Nice!! You saw the Documentary, great work by Bangor. I was in it at the very end when the curtain dropped. Amazing!
@@StuTube55"Just between you and me"..
Totally agree about them being underrated! I've been a fan since I was 17, and I'm now 61. Not only is the talent & skill, over the top, but I will go watch triumph videos whenever I'm in a bad mood, because the amount of happy energy that Rik Emmett exudes when he's on stage, is contagious, and you can't help but get happy , too
I've seen a lot of bands in all my years (probably been to at least 600 or more concerts) but I've never seen anyone who is Happier to be up there playing then Rik Emmett!!
Criminally underrated. Written off as the "Canadian Journey" and drew a lot of unfair comparisons to Rush simply because they were a Canadian trio. They were my first arena show ever back in the day and their live performances were absolutely amazing.
Steve Perry and Neal Schon get all the love, but Rik is as good of a singer as Steve and as good of a guitarist as Neal and he’s only one guy!!!
You beat me to it. Maybe even better than Steve Perry and Neil Schon. There I said it.
Mine too! Day on The Green 1980 Oakland, CA
@@pete4531 - I prefer Rik’s music to Journey by miles!
Triumph’s performance on Heavy Metal Day at the US Festival was considered to be the best performance!
Judas Priest had a nice set too
Loved both bands, but Triumph was always closer to my heart. Kinda weird to think of them “winning” metal day cuz you think of them more as rock, not really metal
An amazingly under rated Canadian band.. Good pick up on the Rush vibe !!
Rush get all the plaudits and I'm not saying they don't deserve them. But Triumph deserve so much more recognition as more than just another Canadian Rock trio. Great band. You and your reactions are still just the best!
Their music is sooo positive...and Rik had the perfect voice for it. Very underrrated band.
It's true they specifically wrote lyrics that are uplifting. It's almost like Christian rock but with no mention of actual God or religion.
And remember he’s playing all of these great guitar lines while singing these amazing vocal lines
now do Geddy Lee
Geddy Lee is great, but he didn't play lead guitar while singing at the same time he played bass.
@@chucky2569 Emmett didn't sing and play leads at the same time. You are a typical Triumph fan; you know nothing.
Outside of Canada, Triumph really didn't get the recognition they deserve. Incredible vocals and terribly underappreciated musicians.
Had a lot of rockers in SoCal wearing their concert shirts, and their music was known on the radio, but yeah, could've easily been bigger.
@@Barefoot433 i mean alot of bands bigger then them have only one or 2 giant hits and then an ok catalog they have 3 or 4 songs worthy of being large hits and then the ok back catalogue. and who knows what would of happened if they were big enough they apparently had alot of trouble getting albums made.
dude..they were huge in the States.
@@VangeliRock Ya they used to sell out massive venues in Detroit, Chicago and other cities. I just think their reign was rather short and they didn't get the air time they deserved.
They actually did have a pretty good run of big years here in the states (maybe 1978-1983), but I agree they should have been bigger.
Triumph and Queensryche = greatest bands most have never heard of.
I agree with Triumph but Queensryche? not so much
Queensryche was great, then DeGarmo left...
I wrote a paper about Queensrhyche lyrics in 7th grade i think 🤣 i really was an old man
Agree 💯 they are my most favorite bands of all time! Love Geoff and Rik ❤️
Rik Emmett was nothing short of incredible. Great guitar player, great vocals, unique, identifiable sound...just incredible! Check out more of their stuff. Magic Power, World of Fantasy, and especially, Lay It On The Line.
Rocky mountain way.
Don't forget the drummer. Tears in the rain
Every time I see a Triumph video I say the same thing. Most underrated hard rock trio ever.
Rik Emmett sang in full voice...his range huge and clear. Whole band is so underrated.
Rik Emmett had his own column in Guitar Pllayer magazine for years in the 80s ,,anybody who was anybody back then loved Triumph
Love that you reacted to Triumph! ❤ From the same concert, US Festival 1983, I would highly recommend "Lay it on the Line", for his vocals as well.
The most under appreciated rock band of the era. These men are so talented and uplift the audience like no other.
There was only room for one power trio from Canada! 😃
Their message was always of hope and positivity. I don't think they signed the Bob Dylan contract.
This song still gives me chills...... all these years later!
Rik Emmett is the reason I play guitar. Vocals on Thunder Seven album are incredible.
What guitar is Rik playing here? Body looks LP-ish but headstock looks like Yamaha? That tone is effing amazing. 👍edit: Framus Akkerman!
This is one of the best live guitar solos of all time for me!!!!!! Fellow guitarist here!!!!!
Rik Emmett is the reason I picked up the bass. 😜
First song i played on guitar was rocky mountain way.
@@gto1607 👍💯
While playing flawlessly, Triumph was always so tight for a trio
This was easily the best performance of the entire festival.
They were the only band during the entire festival that secured rights to their performance. This why they have the only "official" US Festival performance DVD on the market. I bought it the day that is was released, well worth the money spent. 🙂
A lot better than Van Halen that night.
Yeah, Van Halen was drunk but the scorpions were awesome.
Absolutely. Totally stole the show. Hands down.
Judas Priest
I was at the US Festival and saw this performance in person. Rick Emmett is an incredible vocalist/guitarist and Triumph was a very talented band.
You are lucky!!! What a day that must’ve been
I heard they outdid everyone at the US Festival
1:42 Just now hearing Triumph for the first time, where have you been? You did a solid job of dissecting and analyzing the song and Rik's voice. What a great band!
Isn't it funny when people say that...?? It's like...have u ever pumped gas at Wawa...?? Or shopped at WalMart...???
Love seeing you listen to this band, one of my very favorites from the 80s, saw them live 3 times. The good guys of hard rock at the time, always spreading a positive message. Rik is an incredible guitarist and vocalist. Thanks for this reaction, Bethany!
Never got to see them live, I really wish I had.
Agree, and a helluva nice guy, too!
I've been lucky to see them about 6 times, starting with the Just a Game tour when I was 14. They never disappoint.
I saw Triumph in 83
Rik Emmit is one of THE best male vocalist around IMO long live 80s rock
My wait is over...Triumph, probably one of the best rock bands to have ever graced our ears. Thank you Beth, made my day.
Watch the whole concert, Rik absolutely makes it look effortless and the energy he puts into the whole show is unbelievable, he even does a long guitar solo so the other guys can take a break.
Canadian born & raised here. The group of my young teen years. LOVE Triumph!
I heard Rick play an acoustic set not too many years ago. He was still killing the vocals as effortlessly as in this video- amazing!
Simco high school
Gil Moore has a great voice. Young Enough To Cry, from their, Just a Game album, is an absolute KILLER of a song, that features Gil More singing
American Girls is my favorite Gil song
Tears in the Rain. Oh my goodness! Outstanding on so many levels.
Rocky Mountain Way, can’t forget that one!
I was fortunate enough to see Triumph in the late 70s
They never seemed to get the recognition they deserved.
That whole album is excellent. One of my first cassette tapes bought back then.
I did not know that. Thanks.
I did not know that either
A deeper dive into Triumph will not disappoint. So much beauty and so much range.
One of the few bands from back in the day that had a positive message to many of their songs.
You should listen to Magic Power. They have really awesome songs. They sing about positive stuff that's real.
Good choice
Exactly!!!! That's the one I picked as well! ❤
I think this tune is even better in my opinion, heavier and darker.
Thus the name Triumph
Fantastic band. World class singer.
Yep..and guitarist too! His guitar really shine on lesser known tunes
You just witnessed pure talent! They are an amazing band with simplicity. Have loved them since 1980 💜🎶💜
I think that it’s wonderfully refreshing that a younger person such as yourself is discovering this phenomenal music.
That’s completely untrue and you know it.
I was at this show. It was hot outside in the afternoon. Triumph and the Scorpions were the best bands of the day.
He sounds even better now. He does an acoustic version in an incredible small intimate club. I think the song is magic. It will blow your mind.
I love watching your reaction to listening to Triumph
They’ve been winning fans for decades..!!😊
The 2nd best Canadian power trio. Ever!
So much talent and technique. Happy to see you've found these guys.
Fun fact - spent an evening with these guys, in the 70s, on their bus parked at a gas station in Chicago...more fun than is actually legal in, almost anywhere..!
Keep 'em coming kiddo, I love this trajectory.

I'm jealous ! must be a hell of a story
He's singing this WHILE playing a spectacular guitar part at the same time.
Excellent! "Never Surrender" from this same concert is also an amazing performance and features the back-up vocals of the drummer Gil Moore.
Love this woman, she nows her stuff and is so beautiful!❤
She's got that sexy Jenny Agutter vibe for sure.
Love her facial expressions ❤
My favorite since I was a little kid. I wish I would have been old enough to have been at this concert. One of the few bands that always sounded just as good live and often even better than in studio. Three people making this powerful of a sound! And yes- they were underrated- I remember calling radio stations and requesting Triumph and either the DJs said they did not know who Triumph was or they scoffed and would not take the request. I hear Triumph more often, now, on the Classic Rock station, than I did on the rock stations back in the day when Triumph was putting out new albums.
Love the song MAGIC POWER. Rick vocal talent and guitar work just shines in that piece. Great songwriter!
WORLD OF FANTASY is another I like a lot…
Their drummer is a great singer in his own right too.
Everyone forgets about Gil 😢
bad wig though You would think with his money he could get a transplant instead of wearing that pathetic thing
I've always been blown away by the effortless way Rik sings and plays, and that range is insane! It was really fun watching you discover this beast!
I was at that very same concert Triump, and it sounded just as good live being there as it does hearing it on RUclips. Such a great band.. I just subscribed to your channel. I like your assessment.
Some of these guys go even higher live than in the studio. Just amazing.
Rik is funny AF, too!!!
You just blew away all the other reaction channels! Anyone who can’t see how fantastic Triumph is is just missing out. Do more and watch your views blow up!
