Perhaps the best dual lead guitarist duo in metal along with Adrian Smith and Dave Murray of Iron Maiden. As a lead guitarist of 40 years I recognize that their are other awesome duo's but few if any that can match the precision and synchronization of the two pairings.
First of all, I was there. I'm even in the crowd videos, pretty much second row. Second, I met Rob about 3 years later at a bar next to LAX. (Yeah, it was a gay bar) I was introduced to him by one of his best friends, Lemmy Kilmister. Long story but, Lemmy said, "We have to pick up my friend at the airport. He's a queen & he's one of my best friends. Don't tell anyone because it would hurt him". And I never did until years later. I was 19. Rob & Lemmy treated me like gold. Two of the most beautiful human beings I've ever met. I learned more about humanity from these two wonderful people than most of the folks I dealt with during the 80's...
If anyone hasn’t seen the Hear N Aid film the bit with Dio is priceless, these two Behemoths on playback of Robs stratospheric “we’re stars” background vox , Ronnie was amazing but not hitting those notes, nobody was until Mili Matijevic (Steelheart) and these days Yannis Papadopoulos (Beast in Black) great shite!
On the studio version, especially during the slow middle bit, he sings the lines much more, sustaining the notes with nice vibrato. When you catch live versions, the bands have been on the road for months, performing nightly, and you can hear it in Rob's voice here. He's cutting a lot of notes short to preserve his voice, probably for the high notes, for which of course, Rob is legendary.
I actually prefer the live versions of all of their earlier stuff. I've been a huge Priest fan since I was a kid but I always thought the studio albums up through Turbo sounded too clean and processed. I enjoyed the Unleashed in the East versions and the versions on the live video from the Screaming for Vengeance tour much more than the studio versions and really enjoyed seeing them live.
@@reppostthat's 💯 valid, I think many of the bootlegs of Jimi Hendrix sound way better than the studio version, it's a wonderful saturated, organic and grooving sound... yes even with the band missing a cue because they are always in fact 'following' Jimi... Hendrix would just kind of shrug it off and keep going. It's magical. He's the king of cool to me. Nobody sounded like the Jimi Hendrix experience, or even Band of Gypsys. I think if I found more Led Zeppelin bootlegs I would enjoy those equally.
Saw Judas Priest multiple times including this performance at US Festival 83. Metal Sunday AKA the day NewWave died. They were on fire this day. It was 100 degrees plus that day and I remember saying to my friend, do you think JP is coming out all leathered up today? They did not disappoint.

You got Metaled old school. I saw the Scorpions 85 tour, it wasn't quite the fire of the band's earlier shows but it was definitely powerful. Can't believe they are still at it...
Saw ‘em ‘82 (Screaming for vengeance) in an events center not a stadium, standing front “row” center leaning against the stage. Mind blowing for a 16 year old kid!
Never seen anyone like this have such a technical appreciation and understanding of this genre of music and with this particular group. Rob Halford and the band, amazing energy and precision, drive, passion, and rhythm. Bethany, you're awesome. Thank you.
The band was at their absolute best with this performance! I saw the entire concert and I was exhausted at the end!! Priest is the best metal band ever in my opinion!! AC/DC? They are nothing, just play silly rock n roll a little bit heavy riffs and Judas Priest develope styles like thrash and speed metal and give inspiration to many more bands. The are pioneers of heavy metal.
Rob has truly been one of the few singers in Heavy Metal who possesses many vocal resources, which has kept him in a position of honor. My respects to Rob Halford
Don't judge Rob without understanding metal music, heavy metal amplifies distorted sounds and makes pleasant sounds like chunks of metal... Rob Halford is the best person for this and has the right voice for playing (metal fricative sound).
At the beginning of this concert we started to make our way towards the front to see JP, we did succeed, facing the stage we were on the right side and very close, crisp and clean as always, JP was on and defiantly super tight. After JP lol we headed back to where our girlfriends were to get some space. The whole concert was epic! I was 20 at the time. `Great video btw!
This day was by far the most insane day of my young life. Judas Priest KILLED IT that day. I still consider that day the best musical experience of my entire life.
I highly recommend you react to 'The Sentinel' from the 'Defenders of the Faith' album (but please do the studio version, not live). You will hear a great story to it and lots of variety that showcases Rob's dexterity with low and high notes. One of my favorite JP songs.
I had a band recommended by You Tube while listening to Rob and the boys: Primal Fear. Gave a few songs an ear. Wow. The singer has similarities to Rob yet he still has his own sound. Try 'The End is Near' or 'Death Comes Knockin'.
Priest was truly an unstoppable force from 1979 until the early 80’s when thrash and speed metal began. The greatest heavy metal singer combined with 2 great guitarists. They were and still are pioneers. I can’t imagine the surprise if Painkiller was the only song you ever heard from them. And the other way around too. Awesome stuff. Dig the channel.
Dreamer Deceiver is the song from the same album that showcases Rob's vocal range and dynamics the most, in my opinion. There is a live version that is not quite as good as the studio version but the studio version is a masterpiece vocally.
Thanks for the great video. My personal favorite Priest song (and the one that I think most showcases Rob's full range) is Run of the Mill which is not often reacted to but I think you'd really enjoy it; the amount of variety in Run of the Mill combined with everything from beautiful, low cleans to the highest of highs are just so good! I really think that if you listen to Run of the Mill you will be shocked (in a good way) and very, very surprised. Have a great day.
Not only does it showcase Rob's range incredibly well, it's also important to understand that Run of the Mill is a song featured on their debut album. It was the very first glimpse into what Rob, and the band as a whole, would be capable of in the decades to follow. It's such an underrated song.
You should also check their version of "Diamonds and rust", originally sung by Joan Baez. On a second thought, you should definitely check Joan Baez, too, lol... especially Diamonds and rust and We shall overcome (1965 version BBC). I'm quite sure, you'll fall in love with her voice.
That part where he goes high and inverts the note and goes higher...oh, oh oh oh, oh oh oh....oh, oh oh oh ah ahhh ahhhhh....😊...ya you know what I mean.
This is as real as it gets. Halford was coked out of his mind for a lot of these early 80 performances. The live version of this song off of Unleased in the East is outrageous. Also, his performances on the Fuel for Life tour (1986) are legendary.
@13:10 you feel it right! The Song "Vicitm of Changes" from the Album "Sad Wings of Destiny" was released 1976 so you were right that this sounds like the 70ies :)
Yes a favorite, studio version is amazing. I cannot get enough of your authentic excitement over the details. You are spot on and just love your reactions.
This Video shows Judas Priest May 29 California San Bernardino at the US Festival 1983. And many Vocal Coaches on YT generated Clicks and Money through the talent of Judas Priest. The World of today.
I absolutely love your reaction to this. JP seems to fascinate you, esp rob halford, and i love watching you trying to hear everything and figure it all out. Great job.
This was the US Festival. 100,000+ heavy metal maniacs were there on that 100+ degree day, including me. I was 14 years old at the time. I got into HUGE trouble, too, because I never told my parents that I went to that show, because if I did, they would have locked me down in my room, and I would have never been able to see that show happen. Thank GOD for being a defiant teenager! P.S. On that day, Motley Crue _sucked,_ and Van Halen, a band that was my favorite band at that time, _also sucked,_ because they came out drunk and blew it, but the bands, other than Priest, that _killed_ on that day, were both Triumph and Scorpions. Oh, and Quiet Riot also played, and they were better than Van Halen, too. Which _killed_ me as a kid, but at the same time, those other bands just lifted me up more. And they've been my favorite bands ever since. Triumph should get special regard because they weren't like all of those other bands. But they *_KILLED._* So, if you get a chance to watch Triumph. They showed me something that day. They were like Telsa, band that _also_ blew my mind, when I was previously told they sucked. Never listen to _other people,_ is my conveyance to you. P.P.S. Remember, Teach, this is LIVE, too, and in front of over 100,000 people he had to send out his vocals. Context _always_ matters.
victim of changes is from around 1975..robs 32 years old in this performance in 1983..already been on the road for a decade and made 8 albums at this point in his career..the studio version is really good, his voice is incredible . that whole era of judas priest rocks out..most of their best work is from 1973-1991 in my opinion.even tho their last album firepower is really good from like 2018
Yes! Bands where the vocalist uses his / her voice as an instrument are typically my favorite to listen to. Everything is so layered and complimentary!
There's a reason Rob is called the Metal God. Good call on the tie into folk music, Rob covered a Joan Baez song, Diamonds and Rust, so he must have listened to it. Rob by the way, is one of the nicest guys in the business.
Have you heard the unplugged version of Diamonds and Rust yet? He, Halford talks about how they did their original version and then they decided to do the unplugged version and for some reason it just made me tear up when I first heard it. I guess that they had came so far in their careers and since I had seen them so many times and I really admired them for everything they had done. Always so damn amazing and powerful
Rob Halford is one of the best singers I have ever listened to. I would like to make a recommendation for a band most people have never heard of and has a great vocalist. The group is Savatage, the singer is Jon Oliva and the guitarist is his brother Criss Oliva who is one of the founding members of Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The song you should listen to is Hall Of The Mountain King.
Even if you don't do a video on it, you really really REALLY should listen to the entire Sad Wings of Destinty album. Absolute excellence from start to finish.
This is such a cool riff, I think even Jimi Hendrix would've liked how groovy it is. The epitome of good 70's guitar riffs. Grinding and a little syncopated. It sounds a little like Black Sabbath, the swampy quality.
I saw them once. Regrettably once. 40 years ago. Rob and one of the guitar players sat on stools with just an acoustic guitar. I wish I could remember the song. But when Rob sang this slow song. I was in awe. He has an incredible voice. In every song I get a hint of that voice I heard that night.
Yyyesss! The 70's indeed!! Their first album came out in 1974, not if that was the American release or British. A great story I heard that Glenn Tipton the guitar player went to Rob's (parents) house to talk to him about joining the band and could hear him practicing his vocals to a Doris Day song. Awesome! Peace 🕊️
Judas Priest is one of the great bands from before the 80 ies who got their breakthrough in the start 80 ies with the album Brittish Steel...and the song Breaking the Law! Being very versatile with songs of Joan Baez (Diamond and Rust) to the new stuff you can say the Rob and the boys have made a realm of thier own masterpiece.
I attended this concert in '83 and have attended many Judas Priest concerts through the years. Something completely magical about the entire repertoire to me.Would very much enjoy taking you to see an entire concert of theirs as they continue to tour and still create new music deep into their phenomenal careers
I could hit these notes when I was 16 back in the 80's and everybody loved it......hit 17 and my voice got deeper. At least I could do it for a couple years so I'll always have those memories. .
You need to check out these songs: Ghost love score by nightwish (2013 wacken performance) Cemetery Gates by Pantera Gutter ballet by savatage Child in time by deep purple (1970 live version) Dead boys' poem by nightwish (live in Buenos Aires 2018)
I just discovered this channel and Im so happy I did. She watches and Listens with an honest humility that is is incredible because she really seems to know her stuff. She doesnt seem to have a hint of Bias towards anything other than her love for music and Singing. The way she smiles and just listens pulls you into to the music so you enjoy it in a new way. I may not be making any sense but I love how she loves music and appreciates the insane amount of style that each individual can bring to music. Too many people dismiss what they do not understand or "like".
Long time JP fan here! Rob's voice is a force of nature! Would love to see you react to a new young band, Liliac. The singer, Melody, is also a force of nature. In fact, Rob recorded a shout out video to her and is a big fan. A good first one of theirs would a cover of Dio's Holy Diver, but their originals are really incredible. 👌
I think it's really important to note just how difficult it was/is to project your voice into a 1980's analogue mic. You needed so much power in your voice in a space as enormous as this concert & rig to really get the effect Halford is getting here. I'm not a metal fan at all, but this is very impressive.
Love learning from your videos. It paints all of these songs I've been listening to and attempting to sing all these years, in such a profoundly new light. If you're enjoying this journey down the Metal rabbit hole, might i suggest Phil Anselmo of Pantera and the song Cemetery Gates. It's a classic Groove Metal song where the guitar and vocals trade off in a truly amazing way.
It slips by so easily because it's just Flawless, but it should be noted that introduction by the twin guitars of KK Downing and Glenn Tipton is Flawless. It's like a machine but with passion. Listen to the way they change their Dynamics together the way the harmony separates from the Unison playing and then they slowly shifter Paul mutes so that the notes are muted at the same time they were a perfect metal machine
I was there - AND in the video right up front. it was HOT there that day. I felt so sorry for the bands that had to follow this. I saw them in the Cow Palace in San Francisco the previous year during the Screaming For Vengeance tour - he invited us to come see them at the US Festival so we DID!
It was such a pleasure to watch the joy on your face during this track. Priest has been part of my life nearly 50 years, and I remember my first live experience with Victim of Changes. It's not hyperbole to say it changed my life. Thank you for being so open with how this track touched you. Your smile at the gong was pure sunshine, and that's how Priest has made me feel since I was a child. Beauty is beauty. I recently read Rob's second book which brought me further happiness. Thanks again, it's a pleasure to listen to folks like you breaking down the iconic works of classic metal.
I love Rob Halferds high range, saw them perform back in the 80's . You need to also react to Jefferson Starship perform the song Jane. Mickey Thomas has a high range as well. I think you will love the groove too. Thanks for your reaction.

I had a band recommended by You Tube while listening to Rob and the boys: Primal Fear. Gave a few songs an ear. Wow. The singer has similarities to Rob yet he still has his own sound. Try 'The End is Near' or 'Death Comes Knockin'.
This song on the album "Sad Wings of Destiny" came out in 1976, that's why it kinda has a 70's sound in parts! It's one of their best albums! 🤔🇺🇸
5 octave Rob! Sad Wings of Destiny was insane! One of my favorite albumns!
Great point, so much unexpected material on that first album.@@ucheehQ
Dreamer deceiver/deceiver showcases his full range more
Run Of The Mill is an amazing tune!
I think it's tragically under-rated; such a melancholy song from a very (at that time) young group.@@SlitherWhisp
Best metal vocalist by far. 5 octave range!
You should also check their version of "Diamonds and rust", originally sung by Joan Baez. On a second thought, you should definitely check Joan Baez, too, lol... especially Diamonds and rust and We shall overcome (1965 version BBC). I'm quite sure, you'll fall in love with her voice.
One of the GREAT METAL songs of the era.
"Unleashed in the east"...THEE album that showcases Halford's voice, and showcases why he is, THE METAL GOD.
My favorite song of theirs is "Green Manaleshi with a Two Pronged Crown". Rob's vocals are spectacular 🙂
vocals very different than this song as well... she might like it. my problem with that song is its too bloody short.
fun fact: that's a fleetwood mac song
That part where he goes high and inverts the note and goes higher...oh, oh oh oh, oh oh oh....oh, oh oh oh ah ahhh ahhhhh....😊...ya you know what I mean.
Hope she finds "The Ripper" from Priest🙏❗️🔥
That song is a vocal masterpiece. I thought I was the only one who remembered that .
My favorite group. I was there in 1983, 17 yrs old.
Rob Halford is amazing! This is my all time favorite song from my all time favorite band! Love Priest!!!
This is as real as it gets. Halford was coked out of his mind for a lot of these early 80 performances. The live version of this song off of Unleased in the East is outrageous. Also, his performances on the Fuel for Life tour (1986) are legendary.
Yeh he was. Poor Janey Lane.
@@bruzrcruzr2004 Who is Janey Lane?
ROB HA!FORD IS THE HEAVY METAL GODD OF VOCALS !!!
Im crying when i listen incredible solos and vocals
@13:10 you feel it right! The Song "Vicitm of Changes" from the Album "Sad Wings of Destiny" was released 1976 so you were right that this sounds like the 70ies :)
Yes a favorite, studio version is amazing. I cannot get enough of your authentic excitement over the details. You are spot on and just love your reactions.
You should listen to the version on Unleashed in the East from like 1979.
This Video shows Judas Priest May 29 California San Bernardino at the US Festival 1983. And many Vocal Coaches on YT generated Clicks and Money through the talent of Judas Priest. The World of today.
I was at that show but not until Scorpions and Van Halen. I snuck in after dark.
The Metal God! Not to mention he can still do it in his 70's
But they *_KILLED._*
So, if you get a chance to watch Triumph.
There's no crying in heavy metal, wuss.
"Before The Dawn", the vocals on that track, just wow
Great review! She really needs to check out JP Last rose of summer and Before the dawn!
He did a live version a few years ago called 'Live at the Seminole' that is arguably his best live version.
I totally agree. I think that was from around 2010 or so. So he's late 50's or just into his 60s on that and it's great.
So fun to see Glenn and KK on stage together. And having Glenn sing along is awesome. This was the heyday of the band.
By FAR the best I have seen of JP..... I wish I could have been there
I was at this concert 🤘😝 and it was awesome !
Rob and Ronnie James are the best metal singers
I would add Udo from accept
And Eric Adams !
Of courseeee🎉
They are incredible, but there are so many other fantastic frontmen who have the greatness too.
Awesome! Peace 🕊️
Probably was watching a Rock Hudson movie at the time in drag too.
Rob denied that story.
You should react to their new song, "Crown of Thorns". His voice has aged beautifully.
The absolute best clip to hear Rob’s true range is a 1973 BBC clip of Dreamer Deciever, where he does a lot of “clean” singing in the beginning.
Just look at the size of that fkn crowd, unbelievable
DIAMONDS AND RUST!!!
Holy shit, that crowd is ginormous!
I could hit these notes when I was 16 back in the 80's and everybody loved it......hit 17 and my voice got deeper. At least I could do it for a couple years so I'll always have those memories.
.
You need to check out these songs:
Ghost love score by nightwish (2013 wacken performance)
Cemetery Gates by Pantera
Gutter ballet by savatage
Child in time by deep purple (1970 live version)
Dead boys' poem by nightwish (live in Buenos Aires 2018)
Epic band, stellar performance.
True. The way she shines her light on things is just so inspiring.
5 million people across America were tuned in to this US Festival 🤘
I was there - AND in the video right up front. it was HOT there that day. I felt so sorry for the bands that had to follow this. I saw them in the Cow Palace in San Francisco the previous year during the Screaming For Vengeance tour - he invited us to come see them at the US Festival so we DID!
I was lucky to see the festival omg the stuff I did and saw at
Thirteen
Try Helloween's I believe (studio version) with Kiske.
Then go for Black Sabbath's Children of the sea (live version) with R.J. Dio.
